The Leave of Leung Photos: MacNeill
Idol Finals DOMINIC SERIANI/THE YEARBOOK TEAM
JOSH RALLA MacNeill said “farewell” to one of our vice principals, Mr. Leung. At the start of the month, he was tranferred over to JN Burnett, replacing their vice principal. Arriving at MacNeill in 2013, he has definitely left an impact on the school, and he reflects on his four years here as memorable and career-changing.v Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM MACNEILL? A: My first day at MacNeill. The welcoming feeling from students and staff was overwhelming. I knew right away that this is a special school. Q: WHAT WILL YOU MISS THE MOST? A: Continuing to build relationships with the staff and students. The people in the building are people of good character and you can’t help but miss being around such positive people. Q: DID YOU HAVE ANY GOALS GOING INTO MACNEILL IN 2013? AND DID YOU ACCOMPLISH THEM? A: No matter where I go, work or otherwise, my intention is not just to leave it like how I found it but to always leave it better than I found it. That was my goal coming in to MacNeill. Did I accomplish that? That’s difficult for me to answer. Q: WHAT’S ONE THING A STUDENT HAS TAUGHT YOU? A: Perhaps not a student, but students. You all come from a place, all very different places, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. And how you are and how you interact with the world all depends on where you come from. Because of that, we all deserve to be treated fairly based on where you come from and where you are going. Q: WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO AT BURNETT? A: I look forward to a new school environment, school culture, and school climate. In my position, it is expected that I have all the answers and it is humbling when you cannot provide solutions but it is satisfying to know that you will work towards finding solutions and creating resolutions to issues that come up.
STORY: From auditions to finals, over 15 talented Ravens competed for the title of MacNeill Idol. In finals of (above, left to right) Jade Ongcol (11), Jeremy Tong (11), Paul Misa (8), and Vivian Wu (12), Ravens ultimately voted in Vivian Wu as MacNeill Idol. Vivian will move on to RichCity Idol and compete with nine other Idols from around the district.

2014 Grad Winter Formal
ELAINE FUNG & JUSTIN LEUNG
O
n the dark, chilly Friday night of January 17th, the graduates of 2014 made their way down on what it seemed to be a never-ending road. After a nice cruise along large columned shrubs, the grads arrived at Mayfair Lakes Golf Club to begin one of their most memorable nights of the year. It was a time to shed the stress, unleash the excitement, and devour all the gourmet food the heart desired. Students, teachers and guests enjoyed their evening as flashes from many cameras lighted the dimly lit venue. Soon after, the grads were seated as Mr. Leung and Ms. Mei officially began the night. Games were played and knowledge was tested to determine which table would be the first to eat the delicacies prepared. Surprisingly, the food was one of the highlights of the event. Everyone was greatly satisfied by a delicious meal, especially as it

ended in chocolate fondue. No grad event is ever complete without stepping onto the dance floor. The electronic dance music called each one of us to the dance floor and eventually a large crowd formed as party lights flashed around everyone. Soon, many teachers and staff members joined in the fun and jammed away. Then, a Backstreet Boys song came on, and an instant flashback to elementary school arose. Time flew by and soon the DJ put on the final song, which was “Holy Grail by Jay-Z. Although this was a rather awkward song to dance to, the entire grad class formed one big circle once again, just as we had at the previous boat cruise event. With arms around one another, we swayed to the beat as the wonderful Winter Formal came to an end. This amazing night marked the second grad event of the year and the halfway point of the school year, leaving many to wonder what the remaining days of high school have in store for us.

Islamophobia to a different level:
Terror in Quebec
JUSTIN SALINAS
A
t 7:55PM in the neighbourhood of Sainte-Foy in Quebec City on January 29th, just following evening prayers at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City, a lone suspect came into the mosque and shot worshippers who were lingering around post-prayer. When the calls to 911 came, callers described the shooter as shooting anything that was moving. At the time of writing, 6 people have died from the shooting and two are in critical condition. Two of the victims dead from the shooting were from Guinea, with confirmation
coming from the Guinean government. Arrested and charged with murder is Alexandre Bissonnette, a 26-yearold Quebecer, who grew up in the Cap-Rouge neighbourhood of Quebec City, within walking distance from Sainte-Foy. He attended Université Laval. Following the shooting, announced that Bissonnette would not be allowed on campus during the investigation. Bissonnette is described as a far-right, white nationalist, with anti-Muslim views. On Facebook, he described himself as a Christian “Crusader,” and would often bash pro-Muslim, pro-ref-
ugee, and pro-feminism pages. What did stand out in this case was while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced the attack as “a terror attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge,” Bissonnette was not charged with terrorism under the Criminal Act. Why? Terrorism charges are hard to prove. Prosecutors would have to find concrete evidence that the “terrorist” in question did the act strictly under political, religious or ideological purposes, hence Bissonnette wasn’t charged with terrorism, but instead charged with 6 counts of first-degree
murder. Terrorism comes with a maximum penalty 14 years; however first-degree murder comes with 25. Along with Trudeau, Pope Francis, Vladmir Putin and Donald Trump offered their condolences to the victims. The flags on all federal buildings, including Vancouver’s City Hall and the Peace Tower in Ottawa, were at half-mast. At a press conference, Quebec premier Philippe Couillard reassured the Muslim population of Quebec: “We’re with you. You are home, you are welcome in your home. We’re all Québécois.”

Student Council Report
ith all the going-ons within the school, MacNeill’s Student Council is definitely in the heart of it all. In December, a Spirit Week was held. From Tropical Day to Pajama Day, many students participated, boosting school spirit and hyping up the atmosphere for Breakfast with Santa. As per usual, our annual event Breakfast with Santa garnered an immense amount of interest and a total attendance of over 200 staff and students. Over 100 cans were donated to the Richmond Food Bank and the event was deemed a success. Local retailers including McDonald’s, DAVIDsTEA, The Body Shop, Starbucks and IndigoSpirit donated raffle prizes and food to help out our celebrations, from cookies from McD’s, coffee from Starbucks and adult coloring books from IndigoSpirit! Dances and musical performances filled the air as students, teachers and alumni alike came together over food like hashbrowns, eggs, waffles and everyone’s favourite – BACON! January meant the return of MacNeill Idol, our school singing competiton. Starting with 13 auditioners to 8 semi-finalists, and down to 4 finalists, a winner was decided. Vivian Wu from Grade 12 was the new MacNeill Idol 2017. From

there on, she would move onto RichCity Idol, a citywide singing competition with representatives from each participating high schools in the district. Lastly in February, another MacNeill tradition, Crush Can Grams, was held. Every flavour contained a different message. Pink for “I Love You”, orange for “Glad We’re Friends” and purple for “It’s Complicated”, students get a kick out of sending them to each other. The council sold over 800 cans, with proceeds going to fund a major event at the end of the year (stay tuned for details).

ull steam ahead is the only mindset for the very busy members of the business department. Halfway into the school year, lots is on the agenda for the keen business minds of MacNeill. Take a look at some of the big events taking place now and in the near future: ROSE-A-GRAMS The Business club is back on the attack with yet another fund raiser. This time, love is in the air as students buy roses and send them to their friends and teachers in the school. Reducing the price to $3/rose this year has served the Business club well as the group was able to reach record sales this year, surpassing last year’s respectable total of 100 roses. This fun event was definitely a success thanks to all of the dedicated business members putting in lots of hard work. Without a doubt, rose-agrams will be returning February of 2018. UBC ENACTUS Both of the senior business classes at MacNeill (Accounting 11/12 and Marketing 11) are participating in UBC Enactus’ “Spend it Right” case competition. For this event, both classes have to come up with an innovative “Upcycling” product, which they have to sell and promote. They then take their products and present them to a panel of judges at UBC

The Accounting class is excited to present their “GreenThumbs” nurture pots made out of egg cartons and the Marketing students also show promise with their “Cray-Cycled” colourful crayon molds. Best of luck to both teams! MACNEILL INVITATIONAL CASE COMPETITION Lastly, the Business department is very pleased to announce that we will be hosting MacNeill’s first Business Case competition in partnership with the SFU Beedie School of Business on Saturday May 27th 2017. This is very exciting news for the rapidly growing Business department as this event will help put MacNeill’s name on the map in the business world. Also, it puts Business students’ skills to the test, as for this competition, participants are required to apply business concepts and knowledge toward a real business problem. There will also be a MacNeill team participating in the event so let’s cheer them on when May rolls around. There’s lots on the horizon for the eager Business department students of MacNeill. However, they’re definitely up to the challenge and with Business department director Ms. Lo at the helm of the group, the sky’s the limit.

emember that Club Penguin account you made (and subsequently forgot the password for) eight years ago? Well try waking up your penguin one last time, and bask in the glory of decorated igloos, puffles, being jealous of having CP memberships, the Elite Penguin Force, and wasting hours on end on your dusty Windows XP desktop. Disney, which owns the child-friendly social network, recently announced the upcoming shutdown of Club Penguin, scheduled for March 29th, 2017. In place of Club Penguin, Disney has been working on the launch of a new mobile game, Club Penguin Island. Launching in 2005, the site features animated penguins living in their online world. Users could play games, chat and build their igloo. It was sold to Disney in 2007, in a deal valuing $700 million, with 12 million members at the time. The site has grown to a userbase of 200 million by 2013
Why Him? DANIEL DAVYDOVA
“W
hy him” is a 1 hour comedy released in December 26, 2016. It tells the story of Laird (James Franco) a young, hipster millionaire who is wanting to marry an even younger Stephanie Fleming (Zoey Deutch) from a family with no-nonsense parents. Just seeing Laird in his everyday life makes Stephanie’s father, Ned (Bryan Cranston), hate him. This gets worse when Ned notices Laird slowly winning over the Flemings. I watched this movie with a group of friends and let me tell you— do not watch this movie with your parents. There is nothing too bad but some of the jokes in this movie are a little “inappropriate”. This movie has all the stereotype characters; the boy who’s in love but doesn’t get the girl he wants; the over-protective dad; the rich, young entrepreneur; and most importantly, the beautiful, unrealistically committed and smart girl. Some argue that this movie is too stereotypical and that it is easy to guess what is going to happen, but stereotypical things became stereotypical for a reason—they work and people love it. This movie is definitely not original, but the producers added their own twist on things which makes it slightly more unique. All in all, this is a great movie and I would definitely recommend watching it, especially with a group of friends, especially if you like James Franco.

The Raven Readers Report PROJEKT 1065 BY ALAN GRATZ
PRESENT: Iris Guo, Sarah Salad, Angel Wu, Kathleen Cheng, Amy Guo, Ms. Phillips DATE: January 24, 2017 THE STORY: It is 1943, and thirteen-year-old Michael O’Shaunessey, son of the Irish ambassador to Nazi Germany in Berlin, is also a spy for the British Secret Service, so he has joined the Hitler Youth. Pretending that he agrees with their violence and book-burning is hard enough--but when he is asked to find out more about “Projekt 1065” both his and his parents’ lives get a lot more dangerous. THE FOOD: Pretzels and beer sausage (traditional German food); potato chips (potatoes are traditional Irish food!); grape juice (Michael uses spilled grape juice as an excuse to search a Nazi’s study).
WHAT WE LIKED:
»» I liked the jokes at random times. They were funny. »» I liked Fritz at the beginning. His change was interesting, and his nickname, “Quicksilver,” suggests change. He is bullied and becomes a symbol of the country of Germany after WW1 »» It’s exciting. Michael almost gets caught many times. »» I liked the character of Michael. He’s independent but he’s able to hold onto his idea of right and wrong. »» It’s a realistic situation. Sometimes he seems too brave to be believed, but we never really know what we’re capable of until we are challenged. »» I liked the short chapters. It felt like you moved through the book very quickly. »» It’s very relevant to Social Studies 11. The curriculum lets you make all kinds of connections. »» The sister of Fritz was entertaining, wanting to marry Michael. She was only 9! »» I liked Simon, the RAF pilot. He was funny, and he taught Michael to face his fears. We were worried about him being in such danger – we didn’t want him to die. »» The description of actions made the book move quickly. »» I liked the moment when the teacher and Michael looked at each other and knew they shared a hatred of what was happening. »» The ending was very exciting »» It was a fast, fun read for everyone.
WHAT WE FOUND INTERESTING:
»» It was relevant to SS11, and we made connections. »» It is scary that kids can be turned against logic and kindness. »» Technology was really important to winning the war. If the bomb went to the other side, the war could have gone another way. »» Hitler is portrayed as calm and convincing »» Parallels between Hitler and Donald Trump seem clear.
WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE:
»» The battle scene, coming down the mountain, was too peaceful. »» The death of Fritz mad me sad. The sense of betrayal was strong. »» When the bomb hits and the kid explodes it’s horrifying »» The end happened too easily, and too fast. It was disappointing.

Masamune-Kun No Revenge YUIKI SHIROHANA
GENRE: Romantic Comedy EPISODES: 12 SUMMARY: In his childhood, Masamune Makabe is a small, chubby, elementary student, His first love, Aki Adagaki had just rejected him and graced him with the nickname of “Pig’s Foot”, a name that sticks with him from then all the way to middle school. However, everything changes in high school. Desperate to turn things around and to take revenge on Aki, Masamune moves into a new town and loses weight, easily becoming the most handsome, intelligent and humble prince in the school. Aki still hasn’t changed. She’s still as cruel and heartless as ever, but will Masamune be able to make her fall in love with him? Will he succeed and then break her heart like she did to him back then? POSITIVE: Aki is my life. She’s perfect on the outside, but away from the public’s view, she’s easily the dorkiest person you’d ever meet. Totally relatable and totally fun to watch when she’s flustered. The characters are very well-developed and the art is amazing. NEGATIVE: The storylines are a tad boring at times. The plot doesn’t move much in the anime and the jokes sometimes fall flat... RATING: 4/5

The Alumni Page Hello! It is such an honour to have the opportunity to collaborate with the members of The Raven Review to put together this alumni page for our current students at MacNeill. I am so encouraged to see that this is still an open platform for young writers to share and exhibit their ideas, thoughts, feelings, and experiences of the unique world in which they live. We hope that this alumni page would be a source of encouragement for current members, as well as prospective writers who are looking for an opportunity for growth. - SANDY SHEN

Working with the Raven Review has been a memorable and fruitful experience during my high school years. From writing articles on a quarterly basis, to reporting many school stories, and of course, working together with a united and diverse team of creative individuals, it has definitely been a learning process. As a journalist, editor and official secretary, I was able to hone my writing skills which has helped me greatly with my scholarly writing during my university years. In addition, it has also reinforced my creativity, and leadership skills thus contributing to my personal development in the working world today.

Sandy Shen JOINED 2006 CLASS OF 2008 What inspired me the most from volunteering for The Raven Review was the great team that we had. The experience of working with a team of students who were talented in their own ways motivated me to develop my skills and find my unique role in the team. It was the coolest thing to connect with creative writers, artists, and editors through the club, and we were all working hard towards the same goal: the next publication is going to be fantastic. I still remember that night some of us were staying after school to make sure all the pages were finalized and printed before the night was over. I looked at the clock. It was seven and we were still in the library, all our eyes fixated on those old Macintosh computers. You could hear some of us grumbling “The spinning wheel of death!” I felt the air was tense and everyone was focused and we toiled through the night. It was the best feeling ever - stressful but incredibly motivating and rewarding. 10 years later, I’m sitting on the other side of the desk in the classroom and I can say that my experience with The Raven Review has helped me to learn the 3 C’s: communicate, collaborate, and create. Every moment that you have in the club is an opportunity to learn and grow. Even the failures become vivid memories that you can look back one day, laugh, and say “We’d done it together!” To future students: keep writing and go out there to make a difference!

Having been one of the founders of the Raven Review, I am delighted to see the newspaper club continues to thrive. Personally, the Raven Review offered countless opportunities for me to develop not only leadership and technical skills, but also everlasting friendships and even scholarship! So, I hope you can find extracurriculars that personally interest you and get the most out of the experience! For the alumni section, I envisioned that alumni share their stories on how MacNeill shaped them, any word of wisdom they want to share, and career experiences. The column may help you realize that we are all walking on our unique paths and there are more than a handful career opportunities after graduation. So what am I doing now? I am a clinical pharmacist at Burnaby Hospital. No, not a person who counts pills and sticks a label on a vial. Pharmacists’ scope of practice is expanding, requiring us to do more cognitive work rather than repetitive, manual work. That includes giving you immunization, reviewing medications, and changing prescriptions if necessary. Especially In hospitals, pharmacists have even more clinical responsibilities. Every day at work, I order drug levels and lab tests, and adjust specific medications on my own - consulting doctor is always not needed because medication management is my speciality.
Do I love my job? Yes, I do! But it took me many jobs and time to get here. It is rewarding to help patients and continue to learn as a clinician. (Yes, learning never stops!) What I am trying to say is - it is okay if you don’t like your current job because at least you know what you don’t like! Think of your life as a journey, try as many things as you can, and work hard! Eventually, you may find something you enjoy. What are the potential down sides of my job? The following may be a deal breaker for you: • You need a minimum of 5 years of universitylevel studies after high school. • You may feel limited on your scope of practice and want to provide more hands-on care. Then, another healthcare professions such as medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, or respiratory therapy may be more appealing. • You need to stay up to date with medical knowledge, meaning you need to spend time outside of work to read/study at times. What are the steps after high school? • 1-2 year(s) of studies in a bachelor’s program (at a college or a university) that includes all prerequisites for a pharmacy school of your choice *Note: UBC requires 2 years of studies in a bachelor’s program prior to the start date of the Doctor of Pharmacy program • 4 years of pharmacy school after successful application and acceptance • 1 additional year of hospital pharmacy practice residency program after pharmacy school if you want to work as a clinical pharmacist in a hospital If you are interested and have questions, feel free to contact me at Sarah.Lee@fraserhealth.ca.

I get it. You’re probably done with hearing the typical saying from your parents. Work hard now so you can get into a great university and land yourself with a good 9 to 5 job! Well, let me tell you this. While University admission is most likely going to be the next big thing on your mind, I would strongly suggest adding another thing to your list. That is joining a student club or engaging in extra-curricular activities. Here are the reasons why this can be a hugely positive experience.
1. Learning soft skills
Soft skills are like ‘people skills’. These skills allow you to effectively interact with other members. You will learn how to approach and communicate with individuals and large groups. Participating in a student club can broaden your network and you will gain emotional intelligence as you develop new relationships! It’s all about the EQ now, not just the IQ!
2. You will learn how to work with different groups of people.
Let’s assume you joined a new club, non-profit organization or a new sports team. Well, chances are you will be meeting a diverse group of people! Learning how different people respond to situations can be an eye opening experience. It gives you an opportunity to put yourself in their perspective and learn to be more empathetic. Working with a diverse group is like travelling to different countries and learning about their culture! It’s definitely a win-win!
3. You get to learn more about yourself.
No, this is not about how many freckles you have on your face or how the shape of your eyebrows looks like. This is about YOU! Engaging yourself in a 14
February 2017
student club provides many opportunities to learn more about your strengths and weaknesses. Whether it is multitasking, being creative, staying organized or presenting great ideas, it is all about self-awareness.
4. Gaining leadership skills.
Not everyone wants to be a leader. And that’s totally fine! Gaining leadership skills means gaining confidence as an individual. Whether it is holding a position as a team leader or a team player, you will learn how to effectively solve problems, interact with students, teachers and most importantly, learning how to be patient.
5. Expanding your resume and University application form.
Okay, who doesn’t want to add an extra-curricular activity on your resume or college application form? This shows to employers and universities that you’re willing to commit and handle multiple responsibilities just like a well-rounded individual. To end off, let me share my personal story. Growing up, I lacked confidence, and my self-esteem was very low. Others inspired most of my actions, and I copied them in an attempt to avoid criticism. It was not until I had a divine shove that my life was flipped. It began when I first joined the school’s newspaper club as an editor. I found the job easy, and rarely pushed myself. After two years of training, I became the editor in chief and suddenly, my responsibility increased. However, after the first successful publication of the Review, I decided to break through my self-doubt. A marketing department was established and the idea of attracting students to read the school’s newspaper aroused my curiosity of commerce. What could increase the sells of the newspaper and capture the student’s attention to read? After several weeks of generating suggestions, we began our first newspaper delivery service and created a questionnaire based on the articles. The result was a success and I felt amazing! I believe every individual has the power and the opportunity to inspire, educate, invent and make a difference. If I can do it, you can do it too! ☺ Good Luck!

As I look back at the time I joined The Raven Review in grade 11, it was unlike any club or extracurricular that I had ever joined at MacNeill. The opportunity to collaborate on a single project – a school newspaper, is extremely challenging and satisfying at the same time. I also cannot understate the opportunities to grow as a writer and as a team player. I have become a tech-savvy-formatter nerd ever since I joined the Raven Review. But I never forgot the after school formatting sessions in the library with my fellow Raven Review managers, and picking out cool coloured paper in the photocopy room on print days. If you are thinking of joining the Raven Review, do it! You will not regret the skills you will learn and the amazing people you will meet. Three years later, I am a third year science student studying at UBC. I currently work at St. Paul’s Hospital assisting clinical research in the field of colorectal surgery. It’s crazy to think that I have the opportunity to contribute to medical research and to work alongside skilled surgeons. My younger self would have never guessed! But I never gave up following what I love to do. I didn’t follow a straight course like my friends did because I was motivated by the experiences that inspired me instead. The Raven Review was one of those experiences that led me to the place that I am now, and I continue to push myself to get out of my comfort zone to explore new challenges in life. I am so proud to have been a part of The Raven Review. For the current members, you guys are doing an amazing job! Continue to share The Raven Review legacy!

The Playoff Run DAVID CHEN
T
he Vancouver Canucks have had a mediocre start to the season, getting their fair shares of wins and loses but they have pushed hard in the last 10 games with a record of 6-1-3. They currently are in a wildcard spot (a qualifying card) so that means that if they continue to play well, they will make the playoffs, something that Vancouver hasn’t done since 2015 when they lost the series 2-4 to the Calgary Flames. The Canucks have been trying several lineup changes in the past few weeks, calling up players (from the AHL) and sending some down too. They have sent Jake Virtanen, 20, to the AHL because he only got an assist in 10 games played. Former Colorado Avalanche, Jack Skille, has taken his place and he is helping the team more. Vancouver Canucks captain, Henrik Sedin, has reached a huge milestone this season. In a game against the Florida Panthers, he scored his 1000th career point and former Canuck Roberto Luongo. Since they were former teammates, Luongo had the sportsmanship to congratulate Henrik. Good Job Henrik and continue to play well Vancouver.

Shopping with Cupid
@ravenreview
MATTHEW ELLENS
“T
urkey, turkey, turkey,” mumbled Cupid as it picked it’s way through the grocery store. Cupid glanced down at the pile of ingredients it was going to use to make the turkey dinner. Gravy, potatoes, cranberries, gravy, cauliflower, and of course sprinkles shaped like hearts. All that was left was the turkey. But Cupid had searched the entire grocery store and had failed to find any turkey. The only poultry that Cupid had found were chicken and turducken. Cupid had found a winged bull but it was a drink and Cupidvvv already had the beverages. Gravy. After ten more laps of the store Cupid eventually had to settle with chicken. It was labeled made in Turkey so it was close enough. “Hello,” said the man at the cashier, “how would you like to pay today? Paper or plastic?” Cupid looked at the shopping cart. Cupid then pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to the cashier. The cashier looked at it then at Cupid. “What is this?” asked the cashier. “Paper,” responded Cupid. The cashier shook his head. “Paper means bills,” he said. Cupid nodded as if understanding then pulled out another piece of paper and gave it to the cashier. “There we go. A bill,” said Cupid triumphantly. The cashier regarded the paper. “This is your heating bill,” he said. Cupid grinned. “Yes, a bill,” Cupid said happily. The cashier grimaced. “How about we use a card,” said the cashier. Cupid pulled out a business card and gave it to the cashier. “Credit card,” said the cashier. Cupid looked puzzled. “What is that?” Cupid asked. The cashier shook his head. “Do you have any form of money on you?” asked the cashier angrily. “Nope,” said Cupid. “What? Then you need to return all of the food you got,” said the cashier. Cupid smiled then pushed the cart over to the fruit section and dumped the contents of the shopping cart in the orange bin. The cashier buried his head in his hands. This won’t end well, he thought.
Chocolate YUKI XIA
S
weet. That’s what it feels like to me. All of these emotions flowing through me, illuminating my heart with joy. Every time I see you I feel like I’m melting away in a chocolate river. The warm flavours bursting in my mouth. The way you talk to me makes me feel like my legs have turned into cream. You silky smooth voice envelops me in a milky embrace Sometimes, being around you feels bitter, as I try to catch your eye from the side of the room. You don’t always see me, your attention drawn to something sweeter than me. On those rare occasions that you do, and our eyes meet as if it was fate itself, I feel my insides turn into caramel, gooey and warm and sweeter than anything. Your personality is refreshing, like mint, and whenever we are together, our flavours mix into something new and wonderful. This feeling lingers on, always at the tip of my tongue. Every smile you flash my way wakes me up and melts me into a puddle all at the same time. It’s as if you are a warm piece of chocolate, infused with roasted coffee. And whenever I see you cry, it feels as if I’m filled with raspberries and lemon zest. The acid burning my insides in such a wonderful yet sour way. My heart aches from how beautiful you look, even with crystal tears streaming down your face. And this Valentine’s Day, I ask for no other chocolate but you. 20

History of
Valentine’s Day

H
ave you ever wondered exactly where Valentine’s Day came from? Well, wonder no more! Valentine’s Day is a holiday whose origin is shrouded in mystery. No one truly knows how it came about, but here are some of the theories. 1. It’s an attempt to “Christianize” the Roman holiday Lupercalia, which is on February 15th. Lupercalia was the festival of fertility, which was dedicated to the God of agriculture, Faunus. 2. St Valentine was a Roman priest during the third century when the emperor decided that single men were better soldiers and forbade young men to marry. The priest defied his wishes by secretly marrying young couples. 3. St Valentine was imprisoned for helping Christians escape Roman prisons. It’s said he fell in love with his jailer’s daughter to whom he wrote a letter before his death, which ended in ‘from your Valentine? Which one of these is actually the truth? No one knows, so you can choose your favourite.
How to
Confess Your Love

1. Get a light bulb. 2. Give it to your crush, and say “You are the light of my life.” 3. If they reject you and your bulb, at least you got something to “brighten” your day.

MISS FORTUNE
ARIES (March 21 - April 19) May Cupid’s love arrow hit you and make you fall in love with something you truly love. I sense that Valentine’s Day will kind be a good and bad day for you. Don’t worry! Valentine’s Day is about celebrating your love for others but that doesn’t only mean it’s just for people in relationships. Spend it with people who like you for you. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) For this lovey dovey day, I can tell that it will be just another day for you, except with people spreading the love and giving adorable gifts to others. You seem kind of chill about Valentine’s Day and would rather spend it with friends, that special someone or maybe your computer but if you do decide to spread some love to others, go for it! Valentine’s Day is a great day to show your love for others. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) I can’t tell if you’re indecisive about Valentine’s Day or just not in the mood to see people spreading the love. Maybe you seem overwhelmed by the couples or other people that give and receive love but that’s okay though. Some people don’t like Valentine’s Day and some people do. I think it’s a good idea for you to go out and be a social butterfly, celebrate Valentine’s Day and have fun with that special someone, friends or family. CANCER (June 21 – July 22) Be very careful on Valentine’s Day! An unexpected turn might come up for you. Whether your friends got you chocolate or get you just got a random surprise from someone else. Just be prepared for anything that comes your way and fight through it! While you’re at it, maybe you can surprise people with something this Valentine’s Day because everyone loves a positive surprise. LEO (July 23 – August 22) Don’t fret this Valentine’s Day if it gives you the dumps. If you aren’t very into the holiday like Christmas or Halloween, that’s totally normal. If you like the holiday, that’s also normal. You can have all the chocolate and the love from your friends and others, all you want this lovey dovey day. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22) Be creative this February and make something for all your loved ones! People love things that are made with love. Plus, it shows your crafty skills that will impress everyone and maybe that person you had your eye on. If one of your friends, family members or others wanted to have a heart to heart with you, go for it! Be a shoulder to cry on and give advice to those who need it most.

February 2017
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22) For this Valentine’s Day, you like to see the beauty or balance while love is in the air. Sometimes it’s a pain to see people more “passionate” and slightly nauseating but you do it for your loved ones. Only less overboard. Try to express yourself and give some love to those who need it the most. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21) If you’re determined to do something out of your comfort zone during Valentine’s Day, have fun! It’s great to jump outside the box every once in a while, so why not start now! There are moments that are good and bad but make this day an unforgettable one for others and yourself on this lovely holiday. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) You’re confident Sagittarius, so be a social butterfly and meet new people or try new things this February. You can’t help but be positive around others leading your enthusiasm to be very contagious. Even if people think that you’re too positive, keep on being positive! Cheer up others who need that positive attitude of yours the most. CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) I sense that you’re focusing on one thing or thinking too much. Too much thinking can be a bad thing. You might even miss out on all the cool stuff during Valentine’s Day. Stop and smell the roses or do something that relaxes the mind. Why not take a break for 24 hours on Saturday, February 14, 2015 and hangout with some friends or watch some movies. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18) You are quite the social butterfly, Aquarius! The moment you enter a room, people instantly hangout or have a chat with you, big or small. So why not try to be a wing gal/guy and recommend something good for people. for example, what to buy for people this Valentine’s Day or what movies to watch. But if you feel like staying at home, then stay at home if you want. Valentine’s Day is about love, including loving yourself and others. PISCES (February 19 – March 20) Be the wise one among your friends and help them with their problems during this February holiday. But be careful though: sometimes they may not want your advice. So try to be the listener and give them advice if they need it. Be the person for friends to look up to and a shoulder to cry on. Don’t forget to treat yourself too; sometimes it’s hard being the person who has to stay strong.
