I may not have been all buddy-buddy with Kenneth, but he was a light we could not take out.

I only knew him for three hours. But in those three hours, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know a bright, cheerful individual.

Today, the school received news that is the horror story of every student: a student, a classmate, a club member and a friend had passed - Kenneth Su.

In the library after school on Tuesday, we met a student. Didn’t know his name, but he was there. We were taking a look at The Raven Review archives while waiting to print. The boy, intrigued, came up to us, and started reading the past editions alongside us. We saw him spellbound as he read through the old articles, amazed at the current events of the time, pointing out tidbits even we didn’t know.

It came as an absolute shock to me because the other day, I saw him so excited for the Raven Review and he looked so forward to joining - but I digress. I didn't know very much about Kenneth. I shared two classes with him, and yet he was more sociable and enthusiastic than almost anyone I've ever met. I'm gonna miss that. Thank you Kenneth for the light you are. You're an amazing kid, always enthusiastic. From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the grade 9 student body, thank you. I wish I had never heard that from my French teacher today. I hope I'll never hear that ever again. - Justin Salinas September 15, 2016

Dear Kenneth... On Tuesday, I met a bright high school student. He reminded me of the feeling of inspiring someone. Today, I learned that the same student had passed away I never did get to really get to know him all that well, but here I am, feeling as if I’ve lost someone really, really important. And boy, am I right. We all lost someone great, no matter who you are. In the library, when just the Raven Review stayed behind after school, working to complete our issue for the season, he came up to us. He was curious, that’s for sure, and confident. He wasn’t shy at all, especially when there were three grade twelves. He stepped forward and curiously looked through the older editions with us, chatted with us, joked around with us, and watched as we worked our separate jobs. He asked us about our activities as the Raven Review, and we answered. With such an interested student, who wouldn’t have answered with the same enthusiasm? Even after we finished what we could, he still stayed behind, joking around as I finished my math homework. Finding and using a calculator online was fun, especially with him nearby, joking around and listening to my jokes. When we asked if he was interested in joining the Raven Review, he was interested. Very interested. He was excited for everything. We said that he could write the technology for us, since he was so interested. That was the best Raven Review session I’ve ever had. Kenneth Su, no matter what, you will be missed. You will be remembered. You will always remain in our memories, our hearts, and in our history. And of course, you’ll always be an honorary member of Raven Review as the writer of the technology section in my heart. My condolences to the Su family, to your friends, to your teachers, and to everyone else who has been able to be by your side. Thank you so much for helping us at Raven Review, Kenneth Su, I’ll never forget your amazing personality. - Judy September 15, 2016

While we printed, he was amazed at the towering copy machine in front of him, looking on, eye-wide and curious, watching each copy plop out. He was so eager to write, eager to express his ideas, eager to explore the big, wide world around him. He wanted to write about technology: the latest websites, the newest and sleekest phones and devices. But he never had the opportunity to see through his dreams with our club. Today, I learned a student passed. Kenneth Su. Sure, I was a little shocked, but didn’t think too much about it - barely knew the name. But an hour ago, my world was flipped over. Learning that Kenneth was in fact that sweet, young man that tagged along with us, hit me hard, realizing I interacted with him, and was probably one of the last few students to do so. I didn’t know him too well, but his bright personality beamed out, and I got to know the person on the inside. Kenneth was such an enthusiastic and positive soul, who didn’t fear sharing his terrific ideas. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. Thank you Kenneth, for bringing a smile to my day in the short time I knew you. - Josh Ralla September 15, 2016 Hey Kenneth! I hope you’re doing well, there hasn’t been a day where I’ve forgotten you. Although I haven’t known you for long - 3 hours, to be precise - you were an awesome kid and I would have loved to have gotten to know you more. Like Josh and Judy, the only time we’d really gotten to known you was during the last printing session. It was really fun messing around with you, especially on the online calculator with Judy. I remember noting that you had a habit of saying “dudeâ€? and your love for going through the old editions of the Raven Review. Poking fun at that “How to Get Girlsâ€? article was probably the best thing that had happened that afternoon. We hope you like the tech-related articles we wrote! We tried our best, but it probably couldn’t measure up to what you had in mind, haha. Rest in peace, kiddo đ&#x;™‚ - Dennise October 25, 2016

Fired: Minister Dismisses Entire

Vancouver School Board

A

ll nine elected members of the Vancouver School Board have been fired by the province, following allegations of workplace bullying, the prospect of school closures, and failure to balance their budget. Announced Monday, October 18th, BC Education Minister Mike Bernier accused the School Board of focusing on a political agenda, rather than their responsibilities of remaining fiscally responsible. “Today is about bringing stability. Today’s announcement is about the students

in Vancouver,” Bernier said in a statement. The move came hours before the VSB would approve their $500-million spending budget, almost four months overdue. Bernier explained the Board failed to comply with the School Act, which requires school districts to pass a balanced budget by June 30th, which was completed by all sixty BC school districts, except Vancouver. Failure to approve a budget can result in dismissal of school boards, which was performed in this case. The decision came following a forensic audit of the board’s finances and gover-

nance, the result of which only deepened his concern about their ability to maintain the leadership roles. The audit was launched after the board failed to approve a budget in June. Reaction & Fall Out Chairman of the board, Mike Lombardi, described

the dismissal as a bad decision for students, parents, and the city. “The people of Vancouver elected trustees to stand up for public education, not to do the provincial government’s dirty work of closing schools, cutting programs, and selling off public assets to address a budget shortfall of their own making,” Lombardi said in a statement. “The Vancouver School Board is now being run out of Premier Christy Clark’s office.” Four of the nine staff were Vision Vancouver members, the majority party represented in Vancouver CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 >

Richmond Trustees Vote to Suspend

School Closing Process

JUSTIN SALINAS

It

was all over the news – Woodward, McKay and Dixon Elementary Schools were about to have their final breaths of life this year. However on October 11th, over 350 anxious parents and students packed into Richmond High waiting on the results to move forward to stop the school closing process. It was a unanimous vote, leading up to a standing ovation from the crowded room. So, why did the District want to close schools in the first place? Well, it’s not because they wanted to, let’s begin with that. The Provincial Government has specific guidelines about which schools can remain open, including where the students of the school live, the population of its catchment area. The two requirements that Richmond was having trouble with were school population and seismic upgrading

4 October 2016

For Woodward’s, McKay’s and Dixon’s catchment areas, it was the fact that the kids there would be moving to other closer schools, like Brighouse, Whiteside, Currie, Steveston, and schools that are closer to the more densely populated areas of the district, like Garden City, Anderson, Blundell, Cook, Tomsett and Brighouse, rather than just staying at their catchment schools, making for some empty schools. The Provincial Government said that schools need to be at 95% capacity relative to its catchment area and its school population otherwise they’re at risk of closing. They recently were able to remove that 95% capacity rule, with both school trustees and community parents both applauding the government while accusing them of sucking up to voters for another term for the BC Liberals in office. As you know, Richmond and the Lower Mainland are in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which mean that the area is prone to earthquakes and natural disas-

ters (I don’t have time to explain, ask your Science teacher), which leads to schools needing to be prepared, both logistically and physically if a disaster strikes. So far, only three out of 48 schools are prepared if an earthquake strikes – Brighouse & Garden City Elementaries and Steveston-London Secondary (the most recent of which, Brighouse, was upgraded FIVE YEARS ago – 2011). Other schools are in need of being upgraded, while others don’t need upgrades. Three schools are on the list to be upgraded in the future – Cook & Gilmore Elementaries and Hugh Boyd Secondary. Why not just upgrade them all? Well, it’s not that easy – it costs a lot of money and time to upgrade a school, hence why there are only three schools ready for an earthquake. Because SD38 is a pub-

lic school district, we rely on the government to fund education, and it hasn’t come easily, which is why SD38 was contemplating closing schools. Safety before convenience, they say. However, along with the removal of the 95% capacity rule comes $560 million in funding. Although the removal of a restrictive policy and getting money from it sounds great on paper, there are still some questions being asked – most significantly, why now, why do we receive funding from the government six days before we were supposed to actually close them?

StuCo Report JOSH RALLA Only two months into the school year, and MacNeill Student Council has already been through a lot. In September, MacNeill played host to nearly 100 students from Richmond’s 10 schools for TABLE 38. The leadership conference was themed around the Disney Pixar film “Inside Out”, in which they discussed how emotions played a key role in student interaction, and how leaders can positively make a difference in students’ lives. Council’s October spirit week brought together students as they all dressed their best towards the day’s theme: PJ Monday, Raven Wear Tuesday, Black & White Wednesday, Twin Thursday, and Formal Friday. Tuesday doubled as Clubs Day, during which students had the opportunity to explore and get involved in MacNeill’s vast extra-curricular community. Clubs Day was reported as a success from participating clubs, who recorded many new sign-ups throughout the day. Internally, Student Council has begun a pilot program, utilizing the web program “Remind”. Remind, a communication tool designed for classes, allows teachers to mass-text notifications to their students, provided the students voluntarily sign up. Student Council is running a trial with general members, and hopes to expand to certain student groups - eventually to a full-school roll out by December. Student Council is also welcoming new additions to the executive team - three Grade Eight Representatives. Five students ran competitive campaigns for the three positions up for grabs. On election day, the new Ravens voted Jane Wang, Nia Kataria, and Paul Miss into Council, who will serve for the 2016-17 school year. The end of October brings two events hosted by Student Council. Asylum Lockdown is the council’s Halloween dance, organized for Thursday the 27th. Tickets for the dance are available in the lounge, from any Student Council executive, or Grade Representatives. Last year’s council fell short of their attendance goal; this year’s council hopes to top last year’s numbers. Shortly following the dance, on Halloween, Council will be hosting a Halloween Costume Contest.

Fighting for Equal Ground JUDY HUANG As the times are changing, more and more groups are finally finding their voice to speak out and fight for what is right. In the news, we hear about minority groups, such as religious and racial groups, standing up for that same and equal ground as the majority groups but the fight is not just fought on international grounds. Steveston-London student and president of the Steveston-London’s Rainbow Club, Nathan Lee, and recent Steveston-London graduate, Kaylyn Munro, have joined arms in hopes of helping the sexual minority (LGBTQ community) by presenting a petition for a discrete policy, a policy that is outside of the District Code of Conduct. The petition itself is public and welcome for anyone to join and support. This policy, which Richmond does not have, is hoped to help teachers, administration, and those of an older generation understand this “new movement”. As described by Munro “it’s really hard for them because people don’t understand, [especially] for someone who is older and has morals grounded in who they are.” Many students find themselves unaccepted and even unsafe at school, as many report being verbally and physically abused for simply being themselves. Taking it upon themselves, Munro and Lee will be visiting the Richmond School Board alongside many other supporters on November 7 to present their petitions as well as discussing incidents of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia that happen in schools all over Richmond. As incredible as this may sound, it is not the first time this has been attempted. As Lee has said, many students have aimed for the same goal, only to be dismissed by administrators up to the superintendent level. Even in the School Board, policies like this have not and never been discussed, simply “because trustees haven’t heard the matter raised before,” stated Eric Yung, a trustee of the school board. “It’s quite a conservative city,” commented Lee, in regards to Richmond, “[But] I’ll put it plainly. People are scared of LGBT people. They have irrational fears. I would say it’s the demographics of Richmond.”

City Council. Another four members were from the Non-Partisan Association, and one from the Green party. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, leader of Vision Vancouver, said he was “extremely disappointed” with the minister’s decision. “It makes no sense when they were going to pass the budget, and in particular, given that they’re elected officials, I believe they can do the best job for our kids and we’re fighting to keep our schools open. It’s just very, very disappointing,” Robertson said. In the midst of the mayhem, Bernier reports that the process of school closures will halt, until the organization may stabilize again. Gladstone Secondary was atop the chopping block, bringing a great sigh of relief to its students following the announcement. BC School Trustee As-

sociation president Teresa Rezansoff defended Bernier’s decision. “It is an unfortunate and rare situation whenever a board of education is fired, but we also understand Minister Bernier’s concerns over the current state of affairs in Vancouver,” said Rezansoff. “The general public must have confidence that every board of education is acting in the overall best interest of both students and taxpayers. When that confidence begins to fail, or is challenged by what seems to be an unending series of disputes, public support for the board falls rapidly.” On the other hand, the BC Federation of Labour, and the representing union of the VSB say they’re further outraged by the board’s dismissal. “The B.C. Liberal government has shown contempt for Vancouver voters who democratically elected Vancouver school board trustees,” the VSB unions said in a statement. “Now an unelected administrator directly appointed by and responsible to the provincial government will make decisions without any public accountability to Vancouver citizens — that’s simply wrong.”

VANCOUVER STUDENTS RALLY OUTSIDE VSB OFFICES TO PROTEST FIRING OF TRUSTEE MEMBERS. PHOTO:CBC

Province Trustee Hired In the meantime, the province has brought in former superintendent of the Delta School District, Dianne Turner, on a year long contract, which may be extended if she decides more time is needed to stabilize the organization. After restoring order, she must work with her new team to steady the board’s financial plan, and continuing with seismic upgrade plans. Student Outrage Last Friday, students representing Vancouver’s eighteen Student Councils rallied outside the VSB offices to protest the board’s dismissal. “The students at my school, we were all appalled at this blatant dismissal of the elected trustees and the disregard for our democrat-

ic values in B.C.,” said Kaitlin Wong, a Student Council member at Killarney Secondary. The students presented a declaration to the VSB office, signed by all eighteen Student Council presidents in the city, the Vancouver District Student Council president and the student trustee. “The document states that the student council presidents stand behind our democratically elected school board,” said rally organizer Ronic Parmar. “We want the province and the VSB to work alongside each other and for there to be at least some sort of election or byelection,” said Wong. “Some way that the people of Vancouver can have a say on who gets to control school board.”

HOW TO BE A PLAYER: 10 EASY WAYS TO GET YOUR MACK ON

THIS ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE OCTOBER 2006 ISSUE OF THE RAVEN REVIEW.

T

his is the beginning of a series of guides and tips to help guys get their mack on. I will put a How to Be a Player segment in every paper so that I can hopefully help you approach that special someone and get the response you want. Everyone likes different things, but hopefully, what has worked for can work for yu. Some girls like nice guys and some don’t, some like funny guys and some like serious ones. It all depends on the person. So, the only way to give an effective guide is to layout the major turn-offs that nobody likes and the major turn-ons that everybody likes. First thing is confidence. Believing in yourself and being confident is he key in order to make the girl say “yes”. If you approach a girl saying “I know I’m not very hot or anything and you probably don’t like me, but..”, your chances aren’t going to be very good. On the other end of the scale (unless you’re obviously joking), asking a girl out by saying “Hi, I’m Ted and I’m your gift from God!” isn’t going to score any points, either. So, an honest, fairly humble (but remember, you are still trying to “sell yourself”) route is the one you should probably take. For example: “Hey, my name’s Max, what’s yours?” blah-insert casual complement-blah conversation...I don’t

But at the same time, you will try to save your relationship as much as possible. However, you give up easily when it’s not what you want. So, if you really broke up with your girlfriend or boyfriend, it won’t hurt you too much. IF YOU CHOSE #2 - CRISPY SHRIMP ROLL You are quite perceptual. After you fall in love, you will give in everything. So, in this case, it’s the hardest for you to leave a relationship. It’s not a bad thing to pay more attention in this relationship, but sometimes it’s best to give some more freedom for your love.

have a date for Winter Formal yet, so why don’t I take you to a movie sometimes, and get to know you better? If it works out, I would love to take you to the dance.” One of the most important points is to keep it casual by starting it with something simple like going to the movie theatre. In that way, it seems natural and it’s easy for the girl to say “yes”, when it comes to the bigger question, “do you want to go out with me?” or “do you want to go to the dance with me?” This issue’s most important points are: Be Confident: Remember there is a thin line between arrogance and confidence. Being in the right lie has often worked for me, but you want to be sure that you don’t look cocky. (Although, some girls like that, it’s safe to not cross the line.” Stay Casual: If you don’t make her feel like it’s a big choice, she will be more willing to say “yes” even if she’s not particularly interested in you at first. Stay up, Player. Mackadociously, - Max.

THIS ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE OCTOBER 2007 ISSUE OF THE RAVEN REVIEW. IF YOU CHOSE #3 - SEAFOOD CHOWDER The main reason of why you broke up is because he/she loses their sense of security because you don’t pay enough attention. If you really broke up, you will feel sad. Yet, at the same time, a bit inexplicable. Chats and romances are needed. IF YOU CHOSE #4 - CLAM CHOWDER You pay respect to equity. Even though he/she is your lover, you will not give in everything at first. Usually, he/she leaves you because you don’t really care at all. You will even scold your s/o for not knowing what love is. But, if you meet someone that shares the same thought, you will be together until the end.

Business Department Report RYU WATANABE

T

he Business Department at MacNeill has been rapidly growing at a steady pace. Consisting of the Business Club, several business classes, and numerous business-based competitions, the business department is full of opportunities for the young, eager business minds we have at MacNeill. With Ms. Lo at its reins, the business department has shown its tremendous growth in class numbers and club sizes with no signs of stopping any time soon. The Business Department has lots of projects on its agenda, some of which are the Business club’s Operation Christmas Child, Rose-a-grams, and the Marketing 11 class’ involvement in the pep rally. Several MacNeill students are also involved in business competitions such as the SFU Enactus “Bright Ideas” competition, UBC Enactus “Spend It Right” competition, KPU “Future Leaders” competition, Junior Achievement (JA) Company Program, JA Investment Strategies Program and more. The MacNeill Business Club has shown lots of promise over the last 3 years. But this year, with a revamped team of executive members, the business club was able to host the largest turnout in club history. With the most manpower the business club has ever had, starting October 26th, they will take on their first challenge of the year - Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a large scale donation program where small items such as toys and personal hygiene products are shipped off around the world as a gift for children in need. Last year, the business club underper-

formed, reaching only 50 boxes, but this time around, the determined business club members have set a goal for 75 boxes. The SFU Enactus “Bright Ideas” program is an 6 week long competition where students are given the task of designing a product. Then, with a $100 micro loan, they will produce and sell that product to potential buyers. It is mandatory that 10% of the proceeds must go to charity, however this year, the MacNeill team has decided to allocate all of their proceeds towards the business club’s goal of $1 500 for BC Children’s Hospital. This is MacNeill’s second appearance in this competition where they hope to build on last year’s strong second place finish. The JA Company Program is a competition where students are given the opportunity to get a grasp of what it would be like to run a company. Students need to sell a product while managing the logistics behind development in terms of production costs, marketing strategies, and other behind the scenes work. They are then judged based on their final business report of their product. Several Entrepreneurship 12 and Marketing 11 students have stepped up to the plate this year in hopes of running the most successful company to give MacNeill a victory. A win in a case competition like this one would help put MacNeill’s name on the map in the vast business world. These projects and programs mentioned, plus many more, are all events that the business department will be looking forward to in the upcoming year. Business club always welcomes to any students looking for a club to join and with Ms. Lo at the helm of the department, the future for business in MacNeill is looking very bright.

11 YEAR OLD BOY IS SMARTER THAN YOU. Daniel Liu is an 11 year old genius, who won last year’s Chemical Education Foundation’s “You Be the Chemist” Contest, which tested kids on their knowledge of chemistry and applying it towards the real world. The winner, Daniel Lu, received a $10,000 cheque, a medal, and a picture with his favorite science celeb, Bill Nye the Science Guy. Taking high school and AP courses since the age of 10, this 11-year-old is currently enrolled in the University of Toledo, studying Organic Chemistry while gaining popularity amongst students. One reason for this tremendous popularity was because his classmate took a picture of him, on social media, with the comment “This kid is 11 and in my organic chemistry class. He said if we have questions to just email him.” Plus he’s really small for an 11 year old.

ewDiePie’s Tuber Simulator is becoming a trend here in MacNeill. It’s a new retro style app created by Outerminds Inc. simulating PewDiePie’s perspective on his YouTu- I mean, ‘Tuber life. Instead of PewDiePie, you will be at the controls, going from rags to riches. You can get this app in the App Store or Google Play. When I first installed this app and pressed start game, a comedic drawing of PewDiePie appeared with voice acting of PewDiePie himself guiding you through the game, like giving you pep talk (er sort of), and a tutorial how-to. I played for the first few hours of Tuber Simulator - it was great. I especially enjoy the ability to name your own Tuber videos. My only issue with this app was that I had was the trouble of logging in to my in-game account. In my opinion, they should’ve add the option to chat with your friends - no online game can survive without it. But others, Outerminds did a great job!

o you ever wonder why you haven’t been seeing any Galaxy Note 7’s around lately? Chances are if you see one, you should probably be careful. Recently, Samsung has recalled every model of the Note 7. The reason is that they’ve been exploding. The Galaxy Note 7’s battery is made out of lithium, which is flammable. Within the device, the positive and negative side of the lithium are separated by a thin sheet of plastic, which wasn’t a very bright idea on Samsung’s part. If the plastic were to rupture (which has happened in the past), you’d end up with a flaming phone on your hands (which also happened.) Of course, phones bursting into flames or exploding does happen, and not every phone is safe. However, due to the large number of Galaxy Note 7’s bursting into flames, Samsung is encouraging everyone to return their model, even the ones sent out as replacements. Airport security has also been alerted and is confiscating every Galaxy Note 7 that goes through the baggage check for the safety of the other passengers. Not to worry, Galaxy Note 7’s don’t usually start catching on fire randomly. It usually happens when you leave the phone charging for extended periods of times, especially overnight. However, it is very dangerous to leave any phone charging overnight, so be aware of where you put your phone to charge before you sleep.

Sean Murray Lied To Us All!

thought that No Man’s Sky had everything Sean Murray promised. I guess he lied. Sean Murray is the managing director of Hello Games, a small company with only a handful of 14 programmers. Murray and rest of the company worked on the release of No Man’s Sky, a survival-adventure indie game. Murray was interviewed by IGN, a San Francisco based gaming and entertainment company, Several days before August 9th, 2016, the release date of No Man’s Sky. He was asked if the video game would include multiplayer. He answered with a big fat lie: “Yes,” which was also the answer for almost every question asked. Sean Murray even showed the gameplay to IGN before the final release. He said it included portals that

led to other dimensions, advanced ship A.I, and many more things! After its release, people started complaining that the game didn’t have all the features that Sean Murray promised. This literally led to people tweeting threats to Sean Murray in Twitter. It’s a shame he lied to us.

Yuri!!! On Ice YUIKI SHIROHANA

Y

uri Katsuki is a 23 yearold figure skater who made it to the finals of the world figure-skating Grand Prix. However, due to his habit of being overly anxious before his competitions, he messes up his performance and continues to mess up until he ends the competition with last place. In low spirits, Yuri leaves the skating world for an unofficial retirement in order to continue and finish college in the Detroit, where he was under the mentorship of his coach. After graduating, he leaves Detroit and his coach to return to Hasetsu, his hometown. Upon returning, Yuri’s nerves follow closely behind as he is constantly reminded of his failure in the Grand Prix by the unconditional support of his friends and family. On a whim, Yuri revisists his childhood friend, who works at the local ice rink, to skate and to show her a routine that he had been working on during the one year of unofficial retirement in order to regain his love for skating. In front of her, he imitates a routine of Viktor Nikiforov, his idol and the five time consecutive figure skating champion. Unbeknownst to him, observers there record the routine and upload it onto the internet, catching the eye of the eccentric Viktor himself. Viktor then immediately flies to Japan, showing himself in front of Yuri and proclaiming that he’ll be the man’s coach from today on. Positives: There are some sports anime that are pretty boring in itself, but this one is an exception. The art is fantastic, the plot is smooth and funny at the same time, and Viktor himself is 10/10- very nice-looking, haha. Negatives: None Genre: Sports Episodes: 12 Rating:

you hear that?

Do you hear that? You can’t quite determine what it is, but you’re quite certain that the sound is familiar. You also aren’t quite sure where you’ve heard it before. All you really know, is that it’s a sad, mournful sound. It shouldn’t be sad. You don’t exactly know why that it but you know with complete and utter certainty that it sounds wrong. Off. Broken. Like the beautiful melody of an instrument, twisted, until it becomes unrecognizable. Haunted and all wrong. You strain to hear more of it, for the trickle of a sound to become clearer. It doesn’t. It’s as if you were submerged in water, the liquid muffling the sounds from above. You realize for a moment that you feel as if you were submerged as well. You feel hazy, lost. You know that you are there but you don’t. It’s as if you’re floating away, dissolving into the waters. You try to move, but you don’t know what you’re moving. You don’t know if you even have anything to move. You feel as if you should panic, but all you really feel is calm. No, not calm. Nothing. You feel nothing. You think nothing. You fade into nothing.

Season Opener: New & Old Faces

DAVID CHEN

T

he NHL regular season started on Wednesday, October 12th, with Vancouver Canucks starting with a fierce rivalry battle against the Calgary Flames. The Canucks signed Loui Eriksson in a over the summer, who has had experience playing with the Super Swedes - Henrik and Daniel Sedin. He’s a solid point scorer with a total of 63 points and a plus/minus of 13 last season. Eriksson has already had two goals in a Canucks jersey in an easy win over the Calgary Flames. The Canucks also have several young players and prospects like Jake Virtanen, Bo Horvat, and Ben Hutton. Each of these players have proven that they could play on the same level as the NHL veterans. Jake Virtanen was the 6th overall pick in 2014 and has already gotten 13 points in 55 games. A regular season has 82 games, but Virtanen missed some of them due to injury or because of the World Juniors in Finland. Some familiar faces also appear as the Canuck’s veterans come back to full health. Brandon Sutter was acquired in a trade sending Nick Bonino to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sutter had an injury early in the season and healing it took the entire year. He’s now back in the Canucks lineup and the Canucks finally have a solid defensive line. They also traded away Jared McCann, a 2nd and 4th round pick, for Erik Gudbranson and a 5th round pick all from 2016. Gudbranson is a top defencemen on the Vancouver Canucks, but all we can say right now is that the Canucks are going to have a better season this year.

Canucks Corner: The Season Ahead

KELVIN CHAN

W

ith the Vancouver Canucks coming off their worst performance last season, the Canucks look for a bounce back this season with key acquisitions throughout the offseason. The Canucks only look stronger and tougher for the season ahead. With that in mind, we take a look at the key line matchups for this season. D. Sedin – H. Sedin – Eriksson: With the departure of Radim Vrbata, in comes Loui Eriksson. The trio already formed great chemistry in the World Cup of Hockey and will be looking forward to be on the 1st line together. As long as the Sedins stay healthy, plenty of offense will provided. Gaunce – Sutter – Hansen: This line will only get stronger as Gaunce can play both center and wing, showing signs of success as one of the last Canucks to be cut last season. Brandon Sutter, one of the top faceoff men in the Canucks roster, will look to continue his dominance, centering both the power play and the penalty kill. Jannik Hansen is one of the fastest players on the Canucks roster and will look to provide quick speed on the wing and create more scoring opportunities. Bäertschi - Horvat – Virtanen: Sven Bäertschi and Bo Horvat dominated the 2nd line last season, dropping to the 3rd line with Sutter back in the lineup. Horvat took over as the 2nd line centreman as Sutter played 21 games last season. Jake Virtanen will look to find more scoring and hope to stay with the team this season. Burrows – Granlund – Dorsett: Alex Burrows is declining in scoring and will only bring certain aspects to this team, one being that he shares his knowledge, allowing him to

WILL THE SEDINS POINT PRODUCTION LEAD THE CANUCKS TO THE PLAYOFFS THIS SEASON?

become a great mentor to this team, especially for the rookies. Markus Granlund has changed between last season and this season, proving to be a prominent player while hoping to stick with the team. The main role of Derek Dorsett is sticking up for his linemates and doing all the necessary dirty work. Edler – Tanev: This duo will only get better as mistakes-free Chris Tanev will be paired up with Alex Edler. Alex Edler has been declining in scoring for the past few seasons. Tanev, who is known for his high-end defensive talents, and being paired with Edler will mean more pucks on net. This duo can focus on both defense and offense this season, which will be a huge check mark. Hutton – Gudbranson: The addition of Erik Gudbranson will only make this team stronger as he brings in a physical and an aggressive edge to his game. Ben Hutton will help get pucks out of the defensive zone. Playing alongside with Gudbranson will only improve his gameplay as he and Gudbranson look to improve on the season they had last year. Sbisa – Larsen: Luca Sbisa has always been criticized for his playing abilities, hoping to create fewer turnovers this season. Philip Larsen, who was brought in last season through a trade with the Edmonton Oilers, has a powerful slapshot and will be put on the 2nd unit power play. Miller/Markström: Ryan Miller, the starting goaltender for the Canucks, will look to bounce back this season after facing a dreadful season last year. At the age of 36, Miller’s career is in doubt as Jacob Markström, who will be the backup this season, will be competing for the job as he transitions from backup to the projected starter for next season.

The Lost Ring

MATTHEW ELLENS

G

one, lost, stolen- it couldn’t be. Eric swept aside a pile of papers on his desk, knocking them to the ground. Underneath was a pencil. Eric sighed, he would never find the ring in this mess. He looked around his room, studying the heaps of paper and books on his desk. It could be anywhere, thought Eric sourly. He needed to find the ring. The ring, the plain steel ring that was so cool to the touch, was lost. He lifted up a corner of his pillow to reveal a ball of lint and a dime. Eric sat down on his bed and placed his head in his hands, mumbling something about stupid rings. His mother would have a fit if she knew he had lost it. Eric was about to give up when he had an idea. It was a crazy, stupid idea, but he knew that it could work. Eric got off his bed and dropped to his hands and knees to peer under his bed. He squinted to try and make out the shapes within the darkness, but to no avail. He stood up and looked around for the flashlight that he had found under his math textbook earlier that day. He scanned the room and saw it on top of his dresser. He grabbed it and switched it on. Nothing happened. Eric swore and tried it again. This time, the light flickered faintly before dying with a bright flash. Eric muttered something again and threw the flashlight on the floor. It bounced to a roll before hitting the wall. Eric sighed. There was no use in putting more junk on the floor, he thought. Eric bent down, picked the flashlight off the floor and stared at its lenses. His shoulders slumped as he realized that this was probably his only decent flashlight. Then he heard a click. The flashlight lit up and shot a beam of light straight into Eric’s eyes. Eric let out a cry of alarm and dropped the flashlight as he staggered back, temporarily blinded. He tripped over a pile of clothes and landed hard on his back onto a stack of books he created. As he sat up, cursing the pile of clothes and the books, he realized that the flashlight was shining, facing towards the darkness underneath his bed. He bent down and looked under his bed at the dirty clothes and old books. He shone the flashlight around until he saw something silver reflecting the light. Looking more closely, he found it, the steel ring. It was behind a few books but Eric was sure he could reach it. Just as Eric was about to stretch out his hand to grab it, he realized there was something in front of it. Eric felt as if he might faint. He was so close to finally finding the ring, only to find that there was something blocking his way. Eric shivered as he stared straight at what was blocking his path to retrieval. Eric stared straight at the big spider web. He was never really fond of spiders and tended to avoid them at all costs. It was all because his big brother had put a big spider in Eric’s hair when he was three. The spider web was empty, lacking a spider. Some people might not have given it a second thought, as it was only the web, but that didn’t stop Eric from pausing before he thrusted his hand through the web. Eric quickly pulled his hand out from underneath the bed, frantically brushing off the sticky spider web. Eric let out a sigh of relief after brushing the web off, standing up for a walk downstairs. He was so preoccupied with brushing off the web that he failed to notice the spider and its eggs clinging to the inside of the ring.

What’s Happening

JUSTIN SALINAS

to the

GOP?

W

e’ve all heard it – “This election is being rigged by the media and Hillary Clinton,” and IMO, voiced by the man that claims that Barack Obama created ISIS and that Clinton was on drugs at the second presidential debate. I’m putting money on the fact people are tired of Trump calling wolf, but despite these odd to say the least comments coming from Trump, I’m genuinely curious – what would a Trump presidency look like? Let’s backtrack a bit – the Republican Party or the GOP (Grand Old Party) is the right-wing party in the United States. They’ve created presidents like Abraham Lincoln, George HW Bush, George W Bush, Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley. They’re politically conservative and their names are currently being brought up more than ever with Trump clinching the nomination. With Trump’s probability to initiate World Wars Three through Seven and collapsing the global economy in about ten months, what would a Trump presidency look like? Well, it’s difficult to foresee. Due to Trump’s constant flip-flopping or changing of stances on various issues, we don’t get clarification on Trump’s policies. Let’s take a closer look on one of Trump’s most controversial policies – immigration. Here, you can identify not two, not four, not seven, not even ten, not fifteen, nor seventeen, but EIGHTEEN DIFFERENT statements on immigration. Initially, Trump said “deport all undocumented immigrants, build the wall.” Later, you hear “deport everyone at first, but then if I like them, they can come back.” After three alternations were adapted, he states, “I was just going on about something that might not even be happening.”

20 October 2016

Following a couple more statements, he announces, “We’ll work with them peacefully, but without amnesty.” Now, at this point, you’re probably confused about his absurd revisions of his own theories, but don’t worry. Many Republicans are saying that his policy is “quite consistent.” Trump went from “no Muslims in America” to “Well, maybe. I was just suggesting.” He shifts from “We should make sure that Obama was actually born in the US” to “it’s all Hillary, none of it me” (by the way, she did support the so-called “Birther movement,” but Obama was born in Hawaii…). Finally, he reverses from “What’s climate change?” to “My golf courses are seriously feeling the change.” An open letter to the Americans: So, America… you’re fairly humorous, but with less than two weeks until the election, when’s this joke going to get to the punch line?

Thought Bubble: Reducing Emissions MEGAN LING

T

he threat of greenhouse gases polluting our atmosphere is well known around the world. Recently, scientists have found a lead into a method to reduce these high levels. For those who are unfamiliar with the “splitting” of our infamous water molecule: H2O, the process is both extremely expensive and inefficient. Due to the strong dipoles (attraction between negative and positive charges) in the molecules, the molecule requires a high energy to split. Why is it so important to split a water molecule to reduce Greenhouse Gases? Well, that’s because the hydrogen that can be taken from that water molecule can be used as a powerful fuel. With hydrogen fuel to replace other more harmful methods of energy production such as the burning of fossil fuels, the levels of greenhouse gases can be reduced tremendously. Now to reveal the real lead into the reduction of these nasty gases, it is none other than a new and mysterious catalyst that can reduce the activation energy of splitting a water molecule by up to 50 millivolts. The newly discovered catalyst is a thinly made crystal with one layer of Iridium Oxide and one layer or Strontium Iridium Oxide. With this new catalyst to use in the splitting of water, energy production can be made much more efficient. “The biggest achievement in this paper is that we were able to find a stable catalyst that works in acid,” said Hikita, a scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, making this a success in more than one aspect in the world of science this month of 2016. With hydrogen fuel as a source of energy, we can say goodbye to greenhouse gases and hello to a brighter and healthier tomorrow. Although all this talk and all these numbers may be jumbling your head a little, the most important fact to take away is that the evolution of science has just begun and scientists have been working hard to discover new methods to improve our Earth everyday.

SHORT STORY BY JENNIFER JIANG

M

House...

y friend, Adam, is acting strange. His parents left for their anniversary a few days ago, Now Adam was the typical good kid but somehow still very nosy. However I put up with his attitude because he’s my friend and he was just a good guy. I would message him on my phone and I ask him if he wanted to hang out yet he always declined. He always made some weird excuse like “I can’t; I have something to do.” or “I’m busy,” just some weird excuse. Now Adam and I are best friends and we usually hung out and he usually agreed. But I thought nothing of it and just brushed it off since he was probably busy and just couldn’t hang out. We would message each other on our phones, but he never agreed to meet face to face. I also noticed some things that he would never say but, of course I always thought nothing of it. My high school ends at 3:00 pm, so when I got home I would talk to him by message but, today I just wasn’t feeling like I want to talk to him due to how tired I am, so I ignored his messages. The next day, after school, I got a message saying how he wanted hang out. I asked why, but he said that “he just wanted to hang out.” I remembered that today was the day his parents were to come home, so I got suspicious at this because he would usually cancel any plans he has just to spend time with his family but this is way out of his character. I was weirded out by this. But this is my unpredictable friend we are talking about so I just said sure. I asked him if he wanted me to pick him up but he just said that he would come to me since we lived a few blocks away from each other. We stopped messaging each other and I waited for him. A few minutes later I got phone call button from not his phone, but from the home phone. I answered it and heard Adam’s Dad’s voice.

26 October 2016

“Hello? Leo? Do you know where Adam is? We can’t find him,” he said worried. I responded with a calm voice, “Don’t worry Mr. Anderson, Adam’s fine. He is just coming over to hang out with me.” I heard a scream from Mrs. Anderson. “What happened?” I asked, worried and curious. I heard some running and later some puking. Afterwards, I heard Mrs. Anderson’s voice, “Leo you need to get out of the house right now! The guy you were messaging or calling is not Adam! Adam’s dead! He’s on the floor dead in his room!” My blood ran cold. A cold chill ran down my spine as I quickly hung up and ran to get keys and jacket. As I started to put on my jacket I heard a knock at the door. I froze as I stared at the door, forgetting to breathe. I quickly ran to my room and began to look for a hiding spot. I started to panic as I heard the door swinging open. I had no choice but to hide under the bed, I hated it but my closet was not a choice and I had no where else to hide. As the door opened to my room I didn’t dare breathe. As the black combat boots stopped at the bed, I heard some typing and later a loud ding sound came from my phone. I opened it, and read, “Where are you? I’m here.”
