Doreen C. Kelly Head of School
WELCOME to the 2023-24 season of Fine Arts at Ravenscroft
Ever since the days when Ravenscroft was a small primary school in downtown Raleigh, we’ve provided unparalleled opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and excel in curricular and co-curricular offerings in the Arts. We could not be more proud of the many ways Ravens of all ages immerse themselves — and nurture and support one another in — the joyous exploration of the artistic spirit. Lower School students enjoy a full Fine Arts curriculum, from visual arts and general music beginning in PreK, and strings instruction beginning in Kindergarten, to private lessons and the opportunity to participate in drama productions, visual art, band, choir, and string ensembles across our three divisions. Throughout our Ravens’ time here, they enjoy classes and co-curricular opportunities designed to inspire creativity, facilitate teamwork, and ignite both a passion for self-expression and an appreciation of the work of others. We recognize and value the support and involvement of members of our school community who help make it all possible — every concert, every visual art exhibit, every play and musical, every competition. Thank you for all you do to help us make Fine Arts such an integral part of the Ravenscroft experience. We hope you enjoy our 2023-24 season.

David McChesney Director of Fine Arts
WELCOME to the 2023-24 season of Fine Arts at Ravenscroft
We are so pleased to offer full curricular programming in the Arts on campus. In addition to our full slate of concerts, drama performances, and art exhibits, we are delighted to offer three co-curricular productions this season, as well: “The Curious Savage,” “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” and “The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition.” We are incredibly excited for members of our Upper School ensembles to travel to Prague, Czech Republic in March for the International Festival for Young Musicians. This opportunity will allow our band, choir, and string students to interact with musicians from around the world, and perform in three different venues in a city historically known for the Arts. In late spring, our Lower and Middle School students will travel to Carowinds and Kings Dominion to perform for critique and grading, while enjoying a day of fellowship and fun. In addition, our Lower School grades will offer educational and entertaining sharings of work mastered in the comprehensive general music program, and many private lessons piano students will perform on our Steinway grand piano. I invite you to visit the Pugh Family Lobby Art Gallery throughout the year to enjoy the rotating exhibits shown by our Pre-K-12th grade visual arts students. Get a preview of what to expect on pages 36-41 in this booklet, where you’ll learn about visiting artists and the exhibit schedule. I hope you enjoy this year in the Arts at Ravenscroft.

Ravenscroft Parents WELCOME Fellow and Guardians As President of the Fine Arts Association (FAA), I would like to welcome you to what promises to be another wonderful year for Fine Arts and the FAA at Ravenscroft. Our department continues to trailblaze as a leader in Fine Arts education. Last year was a rebuilding year, bringing families back to the excellence of Ravenscroft Fine Arts education, and our students were enthusiastic and highly accomplished. The department successfully performed “The Play That Goes Wrong,” “Footloose,” and “Newsies, Jr.” This was in addition to concerts for band, choir, and strings, additional class drama performances, and gallery exhibits for visual arts. Our faculty led an amazing curriculum this past year and allowed our students to shine in all areas! Other schools even visited the department to understand the magical formula we have here at Ravenscroft. As we forge ahead into 2023-24, we are thrilled to see what new heights our children will achieve under these amazing faculty in Fine Arts. For returning families, welcome back — we are excited to have you in our community! For those joining the Ravenscroft family for the first time, it is my joy and privilege to introduce you to some of the diverse and wonderful opportunities that await you and your children. The FAA is a vibrant group of volunteers supporting the activities of the department. All families are invited to volunteer and support our artistic Ravens! There are many roles for parents and guardians to play, from feeding hungry Ravens before performances and ushering in the theater, to cultivating spirit and supporting us on campus or from home. There’s a place for everyone! If you would like to learn more about the Fine Arts Association, please join us at our monthly meetings or contact me or any of our officers with questions, or how to find the right role for you this year. See page 53 for details.
Kind regards, Amelia Warner (856) 912-4648 amelia.warner0118@gmail.com

AUDIENCE ETIQUETTE We're so glad you're here and we kindly ask that you follow these simple guidelines: •
Please silence all electronic devices.
•
No food, beverages, or chewing gum inside the theatre.
•
If you arrive late or have to leave, please wait until there is a pause between selections or scenes; then enter or exit quietly.
•
Please take small children on bathroom breaks before the performance begins.
•
Small children unable to stay silent should be accompanied to the lobby until they are ready to return.
•
Avoid taking photos and videos with cell phones, cameras, or tablets, since they create a visual distraction for audience members and performers.
•
Stay seated until intermission or the end of the performance.
•
Hold your applause until the end of a musical selection.
•
Restrict conversations with those around you during performances so as to not distract others in the audience.
•
Recycle unwanted programs and booklets into baskets provided when exiting the theatre.
THANK YOU!

In 1997, Bob Timberlake established the Hugh Morton, Jr. Art Collection in memory of his good friend and colleague. The collection is permanently housed in the Fine Arts Center. Each year, the Morton Committee visits different art venues and selects a piece of art to add to our permanent collection. We value this collection for its ability to enrich our lives. The individual pieces of art are also used as teaching tools to explain different techniques and styles of art to our students. The collection is a wonderful legacy for future generations.

Congratulations Alexa We’re so proud of you and look forward to all you will achieve in your future. Love Mum & Dad xx “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right. And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made—that you made—and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” Admiral William H. McRaven
Congratulations Alexii

FRONT COVER ART Josephine Robbins ‘31 Colors of Space | Mixed Media Peter Max Cosmic Perspective: Pop Artist Peter Max inspires the project, and was accompanied with an introduction to one-point perspective. A horizon line, sun, and vanishing point were drawn, then three to five unique cosmic shapes were added to the sky, along with convergence lines in the background. Charcoal shading in the cosmic shape convergence lines contrasts with the organic liquid watercolor background, and black Sharpie covers any visible pencil lines.
