Welcome to the 2022-2023 season of Ravenscroft Fine Arts!

As Ravens of all ages fan out across our campus to expand their knowledge and explore their passions, we’re energized by the many ways they embrace trying new things — from writing their ABCs to mastering calculus and everything in between. A common thread throughout all of that learning is their engagement with the Fine Arts.

That’s no accident. We believe no education is complete without participation in the Fine Arts, and so we begin early. Lower School students enjoy a full Fine Arts curriculum, from visual arts and general music beginning in PreK and strings instruction beginning in Kindergarten, to private lessons and the opportunity to participate in drama productions, visual art, and band, choir, and string ensembles across our three divisions. Throughout our Ravens’ time here, they enjoy classes and extra-curricular opportunities designed to inspire creativity, facilitate teamwork, and ignite both a passion for self-expression and an appreciation of the work of others.

We are very proud of how many Ravens see themselves as artists and performers. And we know that could not happen without the generosity of our broader community. Thank you for all you do to help us make the Fine Arts such an integral part of the Ravenscroft experience.

We hope you enjoy our 2022-23 season.

Doreen C. Kelly Head of School

3Fine Arts

Welcome to the 2022-23 season of Fine Arts at Ravenscroft!

The arts continue to grow and thrive in our complex and interdependent world. We view ourselves as a community of artists, of all ages, with the common goal of enriching the lives of all people with whom we connect, on and off campus. Whether in the classroom, studio, on the stage, or on the screen, the study and interaction with the arts stimulates creativity for us all.

As we work our way through this school year, our teams collaboratively make adaptations to curricula that not only expand the foundations of the arts, but also promote creative projects in all areas. These adjustments rely on the input of our students and artistic national trends to form the direction of our programs.

Ravenscroft continues its commitment to cultivating the creative mind through engagement in our expanding programs. Students are positively impacted by participation, collaboration, and observation of activities that stimulate and bring together the hemispheres of the mind. Faculty encourage students to thrive in this course of study and to pursue a life connected to the arts.

We are committed to sharing our work with you, so, now more than ever, please keep up with the arts through social media accounts and the school’s Weekly Calendar for upcoming events, whether on the internet or on campus.

The Fine Arts Department is supported by the Fine Arts Association, the Friends of the Fine Arts, advertisers, and corporate partners. Please visit our pages on the https://ravenscroft.org website to see how to share your time and talent in our vibrant community.

4 Ravenscroft

Fellow Ravenscroft Parents and Guardians,

As president of the Fine Arts Association, I would like to add my welcome to what promises to be another wonderful year for Fine Arts at Ravenscroft.

Over the past two years, performing arts organizations globally have continued to face challenges to bring the community back together. Seeing how Ravenscroft’s Fine Arts Department has navigated these continued challenges truly exemplifies why these teachers, students, and programs at Ravenscroft should be celebrated. Last year, students successfully performed LIVE IN-PERSON music concerts, the play “Lost Girl”, and the musicals “Into the Woods, Jr." and “The Drowsy Chaperone”. Our faculty worked so hard this past school year to provide students with all the experiences and advantages for which the Fine Arts Department at Ravenscroft is known.

As we forge ahead into 2022-23, I can’t wait to see how we continue to bring resilience and leadership to the Ravenscroft Fine Arts. For returning families, welcome back! For those joining the Ravenscroft family for the first time, it is my joy and privilege to introduce you to some of the diverse and wonderful opportunities that await you and your Ravens in the Fine Arts Department. Our provisional performance schedule has the comedy “The One Act Play That Goes Wrong” on October 14-15. Following this, we have the musical “Footloose” on February 3-5, and a Middle School musical on March 31-April 1. Performances by the band, choir, and string ensembles occur throughout the school year. Check out pages 6 and 7 for details on our upcoming season.

The Fine Arts Association is characterized by active parent and guardian volunteers who work with faculty to enable and support the many performances that take place throughout the year. There are many roles to play, including assistance with stage productions, ushering, behind-thescenes support from home, and more. There’s a place for everyone! If you would like to find out more about the Fine Arts Association, please join us at any of our meetings or contact me with any questions you may have or how to find the role that is right for you.

Hunter Family Scholarship Recipients

This scholarship, created in 2001 by the R. Merrill Hunter Family, recognizes a student who has shown a marked proficiency and commitment in the fine and performing arts, maintained an average of B+ or higher and demonstrated qualities of character, integrity, and leadership. Each spring, students entering the ninth grade may apply for this scholarship. Candidates are chosen through an application process that includes submission of recommendations, a résumé, and a portfolio or video/audio recording. Finalists then undergo an interview and live portfolio review or audition with the Scholarship Committee. Hunter Scholars must continue to meet the scholarship criteria throughout their Upper School experience.

The Morton Committee

In 1997, Bob Timberlake established the Hugh Morton, Jr. Art Collection in memory of his good friend and colleague. The collection is permanently housed in the Fine Arts Center. Each year, the Morton Committee visits different art venues and selects a piece of art to add to our permanent collection. We value this collection for its ability to enrich our lives. The individual pieces of art are also used as teaching tools to explain different techniques and styles of art to our students. The collection is a wonderful legacy for future generations.

Joyce Fillip Visiting Artist Exhibition

When painting in watercolor or in oil, Joyce looks to create a dialogue between the shape of the plant and the background environment. The color of the plant forms in her paintings are often invented. Instead of representing a plant as in nature, Joyce seeks to find a harmonizing color scheme that seems most suited to the character of the plant.

The Visiting Artist Portfolio Series

Joyce Fillip

Former Ravenscroft teacher from 1996-2020.

The Visiting Artist

Portfolio Series is sponsored by the Victor E. Bell, III '74 Endowment Fund.

When art and science were linked in equal pursuit of the unknown, botanical images were more than just pretty flowers. Botanical illustrations created by explorers to far-off lands and historic photographs used to document unknown species have inspired my artwork for many years. Magnified images of plant forms are the subject of my photography and paintings. Photographing regional plants with a backdrop of marbleized papers, my goal is to isolate the stunning shapes and forms of these unique organisms.

Through my work in collage, I have found freedom to work in a stream of consciousness, juxtaposing shapes of marbleized paper with the suggestions from the origins and dates of the stamps. Often a person or a country depicted on a stamp leads me in an artistic direction that I feel identifies that time and place in history. The shapes and colors work as a puzzle to highlight the stamps' origins.

I find all of these different approaches to making art fulfill my desire to find a connection through this microcosm. Scientists today seek answers in a macrocosm with a new lens, the Webb Telescope.

Inspired by her studies of the surrealist movement and iconic artists such as Dali, Ernst, and Ray, Jae created this collage made with hand-ripped papers. Through the exploration of perspective, the unconscious, and mood, Jae sought to create a new reality in her work, revealing the deep connection between humans and nature. She used a limited palette comprised mostly of blues and greens, which remind her of time spent in the North Carolina mountains.
