WELCOME
Pablo Picasso said, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” The Arts can move us, awe us, and inspire us. I take great joy in leading an institution that holds the Arts in such high esteem.
Beyond this “cleansing” impact of the arts, there is great value for the individual artist in the creative process: to build leadership “muscles” and to overcome the struggle to bring forth the work of art. If you spend a day on our campus in our classrooms and practice rooms, you will see students hard at work and building skills on two levels:
1. The individual level. Individual artists must overcome the resistance to get started, persevere in rehearsals, and have the humility to accept feedback and improve.
2. The team level. As artists work together (think as an ensemble or troupe), they must be empathetic, collaborative, and communicative with each other.
Working on both levels, our artists learn courage and build trust. When this goes well, they perform or create works that “wash the dust of daily life off our souls.” I wish everyone in our community could spend more time in the galleries and performance spaces of the Fine Arts buildings.
Please be sure to note the performance dates in this booklet and then prepare to be moved, awed, and inspired by our talented instructors and students!
Warm regards,
Derrick D. Willard Head of School
We are so fortunate to have the institutional support to offer PreK through 12th-graders a full slate of curricular offerings in the Arts. With a staff of fifteen full-time artists/teachers, two Artists in Residence, and seven part-time Private Lessons faculty, we are poised to deliver a robust Arts education program.
After-school activities include band, choir, and strings for our Lower School students, as well as auditioned plays and musicals for Middle and Upper School thespians. Our students are consistently placing themselves in contests, competitions, and other judged opportunities with great success. Our performance enrichment trips provide opportunities for our Fine Arts students to engage with other young artists across the state, country, and abroad. As of this printing, we are still in the planning stages for our travels this year. Stay tuned!
This spring, our Lower School grades will offer educational and entertaining sharings of work accomplished in the comprehensive general music program. Many Private Lessons piano students will perform on our Steinway grand piano. Our Middle and Upper School students will perform throughout the year, and our PreK through 12th-grade students and visiting artists host rotating visual art exhibitions that you won’t want to miss. Get a preview of what to expect on pages six and seven in this booklet, and join us when you can.
The Arts embody our Lead From Here citizen leader framework through age-appropriate feedback and encouragement, which facilitates the Leading Self stage of development. All our programs support Leading With Others and are the cornerstone of our productions, performances, and displays. The department’s work across divisions and disciplines allows our students’ creativity to truly Change Their World.
As faculty, we live, breathe, model, and teach all that is the best of a life positively impacted by the Arts. To that end, we strive in the classroom, on the stage, in the studios, and in rehearsal halls to prepare students at Ravenscroft to enjoy an aesthetic appreciation for all art, develop confidence and competence as artists, and learn collaborative and leadership skills that last a lifetime.
I hope you enjoy this year in the Arts at Ravenscroft.
David McChesney Director of Fine Arts
As President of the Fine Arts Association (FAA), welcome to our organization! If your student is enrolled in photography, visual arts, drama, stagecraft, strings, band, or choir, YOU are a member of the FAA.
If you have ever watched a movie or TV show, read a book, jammed to the radio, enjoyed a concert, savored a meal in a restaurant, were moved by a piece of art, transported by a photo, or relaxed in a beautiful space, then you have been touched by the Arts. As a staff member of Cultivate once said, “Art helps us to express our emotions, to communicate our thoughts and feelings, and to explore the depths of our imaginations. By engaging with art, we can discover more about ourselves and the world around us, and cultivate empathy and understanding." And as German cellist Jan Vogler said, “We are not human without the Arts.” Our world is not complete without the Arts. The exceptional Fine Arts programs and faculty at Ravenscroft are inspiring the next generation to complete our world.
In addition to the outstanding performances and exhibits presented at Ravenscroft, you will find Ravens representing Ravenscroft across the state and internationally in such impressive programs as Triangle Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, North Carolina Chamber Music Institute, Concertmaster for Andrea Bocelli, Duke University Chapel Choir, DPAC Rising Stars, Raleigh Youth Choir, Prague Young Bohemia International Festival, Regional All-State Orchestra and Band, Honors All-State Orchestra and Band, Artsplosure, The Women’s Club of Raleigh Arts Festival, Young Art International, Busch Gardens Festival, Carowinds Music Festival, and NC Governor’s School, just to name a few.
Your support of the students and faculty through your time, involvement, and contributions elevates every experience your student is provided at Ravenscroft. Family opportunities include cast dinners, performance receptions, ushers, cultivating spirit, and supporting behind the scenes from home. If you would like to learn more about how you can enhance the Fine Arts Association, please join us at our monthly meetings, or contact me or any of the officers. We will find a way to utilize your talents in support of the Arts at Ravenscroft.
Reaching for the stars with you,
Tiffany Brooks FAA President

In 1997, Bob Timberlake established the Hugh Morton, Jr. Art Collection in memory of his good friend and colleague. The collection is permanently housed in the Fine Arts Center. Each year, the Morton Committee visits different art venues and selects a piece of art to add to Ravenscroft's permanent collection. The art in this collection enriches our lives and is used as a teaching tool to demonstrate different techniques and styles of art to students. The collection is a wonderful legacy for future generations.

BRENT ARNOLD
VISITING ARTIST
Brent Arnold graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. He furthered his studies at Kansas State University, where he pursued a Master of Fine Arts and taught various courses, including Drawing 1, Drawing 2, Art Education, Intro to Life Drawings, Mixed Media, and 3D Design, with a focus on installation and performance art.
A member of the Orange County Artist Guild for the past three years, Brent has hosted annual shows at his studio, showcasing a diverse range of works. His work has evolved through different mediums, including oil painting, mixed media, installation, performance, blacksmithing, photography, video, sculpture, and, most recently, encaustic. Currently, his work is on display at the FRANK Gallery in Carrboro, NC; at Letters Bookshop in Durham, NC; and as part of a collaborative piece showing at the 5 Points Gallery in Durham.
For the past 20 years, Brent has been the co-owner and general contractor of Triple Aught Design Build. For the past five years, he has found a deep passion for encaustic art, a medium that harmonizes his experiences in fire, photography, mixed media, experimentation, texture, and collage through a soft encapsulation of beeswax and damar resin.
The Visiting Artist Portfolio Series
PEARL ARNOLD
VISITING ARTIST
Pearl Arnold is a seasoned architect and lifelong artist with a deep-rooted passion for watercolor painting that began in childhood.
After starting her architecture studies at Tulane University, she transferred to the Rhode Island School of Design, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Interior Architecture. Her artistic journey took a new direction during her master's program at Kansas State University, where she explored oil painting as part of a thesis focused on light, color, and space. This exploration led to a unique technique that blends watercolor and oil, incorporating pressed materials to create textured, layered works.
Currently, as the co-owner and principal designer of Triple Aught Design Build, Pearl combines her architectural expertise with her artistic vision, continuing to explore the interplay of depth and dimension in her work.
The Visiting Artist Portfolio Series is sponsored by the Victor E. Bell, III '74 Endowment Fund.
