The Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce is the Areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Official Designated Marketing Organization as recognized by the State of Arizona. Through the visitor center, mobile-ready website and in our printed directories, tourists and visitors can find in-depth and valuable visitor information on everything from hotels to dining and shopping and other places to visit throughout the area. We distribute information about things to do in Surprise at spring training games and to more than sixty visitor centers around the state, including all Phoenix Sky Harbor airport terminal visitor kiosks and related rental car terminals. The Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce is the premier business organization in the Surprise area that supports local businesses and advocates on their behalf. The Chamber is uniquely positioned to help local businesses obtain their fair share of the multi-billion dollar travel industry in Arizona. The money that visitors spend on various goods and services while in Surprise produces business receipts at these firms, which in turn generate earnings and employment for Surprise residents. In addition, state and local governments collect taxes that are generated from visitor spending, which further benefits our city. About Surprise

Located along U.S. 60, northwest of Phoenix, Surprise is one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S. Today, Surprise is a 74-square-mile city on the move. Flanked by one of Arizona’s largest mountain preserves, and situated in the saguaro-dotted Sonoran Desert on the northwestern edge of the Valley of the Sun, it’s no “surprise” that Surprise was named Arizona’s fastest growing city four times in recent years. Even the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers decided to take up residence here. The once sleepy squaremile farming community surprised just about everyone when it successfully courted the two teams away from their Florida training homes. The Cactus League Spring Training facility and stadium, along with a regional library, aquatic center, recreation center, and 57-acre passive park are the centerpieces of this new squaremile-plus downtown development, putting Surprise well on its way to becoming the playground of the West Valley. Looking for some cool and affordable summer fun? Surprise’s 10,562-square-foot Aquatics Center takes swimming beyond the box. It includes a 4,700 square7

foot water play area with zero depth entry, eight-lane competitive pool, diving well with two one-meter boards, two slides, splash pads, vortex whirlpool, classroom, concessions and more. Hike or bike to a rare desert waterfall at White Tank Regional Park located on the western edge of Surprise. Waterfall Trail is a very popular and easy hike, suitable for the entire family. Hit the greens at one or all of Surprise’s championship golf courses. Cimarron at Sun City Grand, was designed by Greg Nash. Play tennis, racquetball and table tennis at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. They have leagues as well as drop-in tennis. From time to time you can also catch professional exhibition tennis here. A one-stop-shop for family entertainment, Uptown Alley has bowling, laser tag and games, as well as a full service restaurant and night life opportunities for the adult crowd. Be sure to check out the Wild World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park or take the family to one of two pickyour-own citrus farms. Spend a day at Maricopa County’s northwest regional library. The $5.5 million,

20,000-square-foot library features a gift shop, and many public access flat screen computers and separate adult, teen and child areas with greenhouse reading rooms overlooking a five-acre lake. Be sure to visit the 12’x78’ mosaic that depicts the history of Surprise. This festive community event held in the city’s Original Town Site is about bringing people together to celebrate both the history and the future of the city and the important role Grand Avenue plays to Surprise and the region. The inaugural Surprise Fiesta Grande was held in October 2014 and featured live music, authentic Mexican food, festive beverages, dancing, a car show and a kid zone with a piñata plaza and interactive games. From September through spring the city hosts Second Sunday in the Park with a live band, ranging from Spanish guitar to Irish music to a Neil Diamond cover band. There’s also roaming entertainment such as Renaissance Festival folk at Surprise Community Park. Families can picnic among the face painters and balloon twisters or purchase food from vendors. Whether you’re a spectator, participant or a little of both, Arizona is a sports lover’s paradise. With year-round sunny skies, you never have to lose a day or two of your vacation due to inclement weather. Surprise is the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers baseball teams. These Major League Baseball teams use Surprise Stadium for their activities. Surprise is also a popular destination for fans who want close proximity to Phoenix and Glendale for Major League Baseball’s 2001 World Champs, the Arizona Diamondbacks, as well as the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. Spring Training Tickets: The Lowdown

Here’s our overview of the various ways you can buy spring training tickets, from safe and early to speculative and down the road. To begin with, you need to know that there’s no one date when all MLB teams place spring training tickets on sale. Each team sets a sale date, sometimes with very little warning.

Working with Teams

Buying a ticket directly from a team will usually be the cheapest and most convenient option. With popular teams, the selection will be limited. Every team sells spring season tickets-bought mostly by locals and snowbirds-and the best tickets in any spring ballpark are controlled by these season ticket

holders. The MLB teams are also set up best to sell massive amounts of tickets in a short amount of time, as the beginning of spring training ticket sales can best be described as a feeding frenzy. This means tens of thousands of fans rush to obtain tickets for specific games. There are four ways to order spring training tickets directly from MLB teams: via telephone, via the Internet, in person, and via the U.S. Mail. We’ll describe each. • Via telephone. Most tickets are sold via phone sales. This can be a frustrating way of doing things, as you’re likely to encounter some busy signals or long wait times when tickets first go on sale. You’ll also pay a ticketing fee for the convenience of buying tickets. • Via the Internet. Every team sells spring training tickets via the Internet. There are some pluses and minuses to this approach. On the one hand, you can bypass clogged phone lines and make your purchases directly (although Ticketmaster has implemented the equivalent of telephone wait times when you buy popular tickets online). And yes, you’ll also pay a ticketing fee for the convenience of buying tickets. • In person. Most teams sell spring training tickets at their main ticket office at the major league ballpark, the spring training ticket office, or local team stores. • Via U.S. Mail. Some teams sell tickets via the mail. You send in your money for a price range and you take whatever tickets the team decides to send you. Will you receive the best tickets in your price range? Depends on the whims of a ticket rep with the team.

THE 2015 TEXAS RANGERS

The Texas Rangers were three games under .500 and eight games out of first place on July 31 when they announced they had acquired pitcher Cole Hamels along with reliever Jake Diekman from the Phillies for five prospects and veteran left-hander Matt Harrison. The Rangers ostensibly made the trade for the future as much as the present. Hamels is signed through 2018 so it was perceived the Rangers made the deal primarily with the idea of him being at the head of their rotation for three more years beyond this season. But Hamels, escaping a last-place team, came to Texas with the belief that the Rangers could still get back into the playoff race. "There's still a chance, and I like knowing that," Hamels said at the time. "I know I can help be a part of that for the Rangers, and that's what I'll look to do. ... I just want to be a part of it and do what I can. My expectations are to go out there and win ball games." Hamels refusal to concede 2015 as a lost cause carried throughout the Rangers’ clubhouse on a team that seemed to spend much of the first four months barely holding on to any playoff hopes. But over the final two months, the Rangers were one of the hottest teams in baseball, posting a 38-22 record and overcoming a 9.0 game deficit to win the American League Western Division Title on the final day of the season. In the American League Division Series against Toronto, the Rangers won the first two games before dropping the final three contests to lose in heartbreaking fashion. But that took nothing away from a remarkable turnaround season. After a 67-95 season in 2014, Texas became just the second American League team in history to make the postseason a year after having the league’s worst record. “I knew since spring training we believed this is a good team that could contend in the division,” third baseman Adrian Beltre said. “Even though we got hit with (injuries), 2016 Official Visitors Guide

we still had a good team and we were able to hang around and look where we are right now. Last year at this time we were out of it. This year we are playing for something. It has been great, great for the team.” The turnaround came even though the Rangers made relatively few moves in the off-season. The most significant off-season announcement came on October 16. That’s when the Rangers announced the hiring of Jeff Banister to be the 18th full-time manager in club history. The first-year skipper went on to be selected as the BBWAA 2015 American League Manager of the Year. "Jeff is a winner and a survivor," Rangers President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Jon Daniels said. "He is an impressive guy to meet. You can understand how he can command a room. The passion for winning and getting to know people as a person before the player stands out the most.” And the players performed. Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland rebounded from an injury-plagued 2014 to post strong offensive seasons at designated hitter and first base. Second baseman Rougned Odor came back from a May minor league demotion to bat .292 in his final 92 games. Rightfielder Shin-Soo Choo survived a very slow start to post the second best average in the majors after the All-Star break at .343. Shortstop Elvis Andrus and Beltre gave the Rangers strength on the left side of the infield and Rule 5 selection Delino DeShields solidified the center field position. The starting rotation withstood the season-ending injury to Yu Darvish in spring training and having Derek Holland sidelined for more than four months. Veterans Colby Lewis and Yovani Gallardo led the group before Hamels joined them for the last two months. Diekman and Sam Dyson working significant innings. In some ways, the 2015 Rangers season defied description. By going last to first under a rookie manager, it made for a memorable year.

The trail crosses the U.S. 60 in Surprise and approximately 15 miles of the trail run west of the Loop 303. Culvert Conceptualized in 1997 by the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department, the Maricopa Trail was envisioned as a pedestrian beltway that would connect nine of the department’s ten regional parks, linking them with the city of Phoenix’s South Mountain Park and encouraging their use by the area’s residents. The trail incorporates existing portions of the Sun Circle Trail, the National Trail in South Mountain Park, portions of the trails within White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Cave Creek Regional Park and pathways already developed along the McMicken corridor in Surprise. Construction on new segments of the trail began in 2006 and has brought the total length of the existing corridors to approximately 80 miles (130 km). White Tank Mountain Regional Park offers approximately 25 miles of excellent shared-use trails, ranging in length from 0.9 mile to 7.9 miles and difficulty from easy to strenuous. Overnight backpacking with a permit is allowed in established backcountry campsites. Day hikes can provide some breathtaking views of the mountains and panoramas of the Valley below. Horseback and mountain bike riders are welcome, although caution is stressed as some of the trails may be extremely difficult. In addition, there are 2.5 miles of pedestrian-only trails. These include two short trails that are hard-surfaced and barrier free. Waterfall Trail is barrier-free for 5/10 of a mile. The handicap accessible portion now ends about 1/10 of a mile past Petroglyph Plaza. The short loop of Black Rock Trail, which is about 1/2 mile long, begins at Ramada 4.

This wide path is lined with river rocks – placed there long ago by prison inmates. It is very easy to follow. There are a couple of junctions where convening trails make a hodgepodge connection. The path generally follows the edge of Ford Canyon and gradually angles up into a side canyon that starts displaying white granite bedrock tanks – the range’s namesakes. These tanks contain varying amounts of water accumulated from previous rainfalls. The gradual climb along Ford Canyon brings the western part of Phoenix into view. The higher you climb on the trail, the closer you get to the main stream bed. Take a walk over to the exposed granite and see if you can find any water in the tanks. Look for remnants of old rock dams and water catchment basins. Also look for stone fencing and small corrals, which are remnants of cattle grazing days. Waterfall Trail: Leave White Tank Mountain Road at 1.65 miles from the entrance taking Waterfall Canyon Road to the left then a very short spur road. The trail leaves this branch road at a sign 2.0 miles from the park entrance near the picnic ramada and comfort station #6. Total ascent 180’. • Length: 5.8 Round Trip • Elevation Change: +-900’ • Elevation: 1500 ft. • Difficulty: Moderate

About the Petroglyphs of White Tank Mountains Ancient Arizonans pecked hundreds of figures and symbols on the rock faces of the White Tank Mountains. Some may approach 10,000 years old. All have withstood sun, rain, and vandals for 700 to 800 years, or more. The Black Rock Trail circles through a Hohokam village site, though the pit houses and trash mounds are hidden to all but the trained eye of an archeologist. The largest group of rock-art panels is along the Waterfall Canyon Trail at “Petroglyph Plaza”. Another big group is near the entrance to the box canyon that gives the trail its name. A rock drawing was serious business to its maker. While no one can say precisely what most of them “mean”, we know they had important functions in the lives of their makers. They were not simply Stone Age graffiti. The symbols recorded events and marked locations. They were a magical way to control nature so rain would fall or mountain sheep would let themselves be caught. Some served as trail markers and maps. Others represented religious concepts. Visitors are not permitted to make “tombstone rubbings” of the petroglyphs. It doesn’t work, and it will erode the dark areas, making the petroglyph dimmer. Look at and photograph these

figures and symbols of history, but please don’t touch the petroglyphs because skin oils can also damage them. The Hohokam Indians occupied the valleys around Phoenix and Tucson between 300–1500 CE. Skilled and ingenious farmers, these ancient people left numerous signs of their presence that can still be found today. They engineered one of the most sophisticated canal systems in the ancient world to farm cotton, corn, beans and squash in the basins of the Salt, Gila, and Santa Cruz rivers. Some canals can be detected via satellite and are responsible, at least in part, for the location of Phoenix and its emergence as an agricultural center. The word Hohokam can be translated as “those who came before” in the language of the Akimel O’odham, or Pima people. It is generally believed that the Piman Indians, including The Tohono O’odham and the Pima (Akimel O’odham) are descended from the Hohokam. Oral histories of the Hopi indicate that their ancestors once lived in the central Arizona region. No one can say for sure why the Hohokam left the area around 1500 CE, but remnants of their civilization continue to intrigue us.

With about 800 acres used for the two-year crop, the locale ranks in the top three rosebush growing areas in the nation, Woolf Leyton Roses harvests 5 million to 6 million rosebushes a year, which are sold to garden stores around the country. They grow about 300 types of roses. Rose bushes grown in Arizona account for half of all the roses sold in the nation. No exaggeration! It’s not a farm that gives unannounced tours, but to see and smell the fields in bloom in early spring is worth at least a drive by.

The Surprise Women’s Heritage Trail pays homage to Flora Statler, who purchased, platted and marketed lots in what would grow from a small, migrant community to one of the state’s 10 largest cities.
