9 Ways to Deep Clean the Cruddiest Things in Your Home Without Breaking Into a Sweat By: Jamie Wiebe
Ahhh! Sparkling floors, gleaming windows, and zero dust bunnies. A thorough spring cleaning can make your abode feel brand new. But that immaculate house comes with a price — sore biceps. Instead of skimping on your annual deep clean because you’re zonked, use these brilliant hacks for nine of the most pain-in-the-butt tasks. You’ll get the same pristine results with half the time and energy.
1. Break Out the Drill on Your Bathtub
Cleaning a grungy tub can be backbreaking work. But here’s a genius idea that’ll save you time and sweat: Use your drill. Simply attach a foam ball polishing attachment, and use it to do the scrubbing for you. Look in the automotive section for the attachment, which is made specially for tackling grime without scratching surfaces.
2. Soak Stove Burners in Ammonia
Your stove burners take the bulk of the greasy, gunky mess during cooking, so do them a favor and give them a good cleaning. Don’t worry:
No scrubbing involved. To clear the crud, combine your stove burners and 1/4 cup ammonia in a plastic bag and let sit overnight. They should come clean with a light sponge the next day.
3. Run Floor Vents Through the Dishwasher Scour as you might, removing all the accumulated dirt and dust from your floor and ceiling vents can be a spring cleaner’s nightmare. If yours are made of aluminum or steel, there’s a shortcut to spic-andspan: Just run them through the dishwasher on a water-only cycle.
4. Iron Out Bad Carpet Stains
Don’t spend an hour scrubbing out that nasty, set-in carpet splotch. Iron it out instead. Spritz a solution of one part vinegar, three parts water on the stain, and lay a clean cotton cloth on top. Turn your iron to its highest steam setting and run it over the stain for about 10 seconds to transfer the stain to the cloth and off your carpet.
5. Tie a Bag of Vinegar Around Your Showerhead Mineral build-up on your
showerhead can cause low water pressure and wonky water streams. But it’s easy to clean them without removing them. Using a rubber band, attach a bag of vinegar to your showerhead, making sure all the holes are submerged in the vinegar, and soak it overnight. Voilà. Good as new.
6. Make Your Leaf Blower MultiTask Forget the broom and rags when you’re cleaning out the garage. Whip out your leaf blower and let it blow all the dust, debris, and dead bugs (yuck!) away from the floor and shelving. Just be sure to put away light-weight things could accidentally get blown out with the trash.
7. Get Rid of Crayon Marks with Goo Gone
Removing evidence of your toddler’s overactive imagination from your gorgeous white walls can be a struggle, but a little bit of Goo Gone (traditionally used to clean sticker residue) will remove the crayon and your headache. Spray it on the drawing, wait a moment, and wipe it off cleanly — without
exhausting your arms.
8. Boil Your Range Filter
There’s no need to scrub the grease and grime off your range filters. Use a bit of baking soda and your largest pot instead. Set the water to boil, slowly add 1/2 cup of baking soda, and submerge your filters for about five minutes. (Make sure to dump the water somewhere safe. Grease in the drain is even worse than grimy filters.)
9. Sprinkle Your Mattress With Baking Soda
Your mattress needs a springtime refresh, too, but you sure can’t toss it in the washing machine. Cleaning gurus recommend dragging your mattress outside, beating it, and letting the sunshine help freshen it, then dragging it back in. But who has the muscle for that? This is much easier: Use a kitchen strainer to sprinkle baking soda over its surface and let sit for an hour or longer. Longer is better. Then use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment to suck up the odor-absorbing soda.

6 Things Everyone Should Do When Moving Into a New House When I bought my first house, my timing couldn’t have been better: The house closing was two weeks before the lease was up on my apartment. That meant I could take my time packing and moving, and I could get to know the new place before moving in. I recruited family and friends to help me move (in exchange for a beer-and-pizza picnic on the floor) and, as a bonus, I got to pick their brains about what first-time homeowners should know. Their help was one of the best housewarming presents I could have gotten. And thanks to their expertise and a little Googling, here’s what I learned about what to do before moving in.
1. Change the locks.
You really don’t know who else has keys to your home, so change the locks. That ensures you’re the only person who has access. Install new deadbolts yourself for as little as $10 per lock, or call a locksmith — if you supply the new locks, they typically charge about $20 to $30 per lock for labor.
2. Check for plumbing leaks.
Your home inspector should do this for you before closing, but it never hurts to double-check. I didn’t have any leaks to fix, but when checking my kitchen sink, I did discover the sink sprayer was broken. I replaced it for under $20. Keep an eye out for dripping faucets and running toilets, and check your water heater for signs of a leak. Here’s a neat trick: Check your water meter at the beginning and end of a two-hour window in which no water is being used in your house. If the reading is different, you have a leak.
3. Steam clean carpets.
Do this before you move your furniture in, and your new home life will be off to a fresh start. You can pay a professional carpet cleaning service — you’ll pay about $50 per room; most services require a minimum of about $100 before they’ll come out — or you can rent a steam cleaner for about $30 per day and do the work yourself. I was able to save some
By: Courtney Craig
money by borrowing a steam cleaner from a friend.
under my back deck, but I prefer not to think about him.
4. Wipe out your cabinets.
6. Introduce yourself to your circuit breaker box and main water valve.
Another no-brainer before you move in your dishes and bathroom supplies. Make sure to wipe inside and out, preferably with a non-toxic cleaner, and replace contact paper if necessary. When I cleaned my kitchen cabinets, I found an unpleasant surprise: Mouse poop. Which leads me to my next tip …
5. Give critters the heave-ho.
That includes mice, rats, bats, termites, roaches, and any other uninvited guests. There are any number of DIY ways to get rid of pests, but if you need to bring out the big guns, an initial visit from a pest removal service will run you $100 to $300, followed by monthly or quarterly visits at about $50 each time. For my mousy enemies, I strategically placed poison packets around the kitchen, and I haven’t found any carcasses or any more poop, so the droppings I found must have been old. I might owe a debt of gratitude to the snake that lives
My first experience with electrical wiring was replacing a broken light fixture in a bathroom. After locating the breaker box, which is in my garage, I turned off the power to that bathroom so I wouldn’t electrocute myself. It’s a good idea to figure out which fuses control what parts of your house and label them accordingly. This will take two people: One to stand in the room where the power is supposed to go off, the other to trip the fuses and yell, “Did that work? How about now?” You’ll want to know how to turn off your main water valve if you have a plumbing emergency, if a hurricane or tornado is headed your way, or if you’re going out of town. Just locate the valve — it could be inside or outside your house — and turn the knob until it’s off. Test it by turning on any faucet in the house; no water should come out.

Can One Home Insurance Claim Bump Up Your Annual Premium? By: Dona DeZube When a tree fell on my house during a derecho wind storm last summer, it poked a half-dozen holes about the size of a car steering wheel in the roof. But my husband, Al, and I weren’t in a hurry to call our insurance company. Call us paranoid, but until we knew how much it was going to cost to repair the roof, we didn’t want to risk letting our insurer know we were even thinking about filing a claim. Al manages our family’s rental properties and has filed a fair share of insurance claims — from siding damage after someone drove into a house we own in York, Pa., to having our own hardwood floors ruined when the neighbor’s water heater failed, flooding next to our shared townhouse wall. Our theory is that every time you file a claim, the insurance company punishes you by raising your premium at the very next renewal. File too many claims and they’ll put you in a special, super-expensive rate class. So I wasn’t totally surprised when InsuranceQuotes.com recently came out with a study saying that in some states, filing just one claim with your homeowners insurer can cause your rates to rise as much as 20%. Some states where you’ll see double-digit premium increases after filing only one claim, according to the study: Minnesota 21% Connecticut 21% Maryland 19% California 18% Oregon 17% Arizona 17% Alaska 17% But if you live in other states, your premiums will barely budge after you file a claim: Texas 0%* New York 1% Florida 2% Vermont 2% Massachusetts 2% *In Texas, insurers aren’t allowed to boost premiums after your first claim.
What Gives? Why So Different from State to State?
The differences come down to the rules states set for insurance companies and the difference in weather from state to state, says InsuranceQuotes.com Senior Analyst Laura Adams. And what sounds bad — being in a state where rates get bumped up pretty heavily after the first claim — can actually be a good thing. “In some states where we’re seeing big rate increases, consumers are getting low rates to begin with,” she explains. If you live in one of those states and never file a claim, you continue to get the advantage of the low initial rate. If you file a claim, however, you pay a heck of a lot more after that claim. And what sounds good — being in a state where your insurer either doesn’t bump your premium for filing a claim or bumps it only a bit — can be bad because you may be paying a pretty high premium to begin with, especially if you’re in a state prone to weather-related insurance claims like hurricaneprone Florida.
Careful What You Say When You Call Your Insurer
Imagine how mad you’d be if your premium went up because you called to talk about a claim you were thinking about filing but didn’t file. Suppose, for example, I called my insurance company to talk about that tree limb that fell on my house and said I might be filing a claim, but only if the damage is more than my deductible. If the insurance company’s customer service representative hears me use the word “claim,” she might open a claim and put that tree damage information in my permanent insurance track record. That could happen even if I opted not to file the claim. Then, I wouldn’t get the claim payment and I might still have my premium rise the next year. But wait, it gets worse. Claims filed by the people who lived in your house before you did can also cause your
premiums to rise. That’s because your CLUE report includes claims filed by anyone who lived at your address for the past five to seven years. So maybe you only filed one claim, but if the prior owner filed two homeowners insurance claims, your insurance premium is underwritten as though you filed all three claims. You know what else can make your homeowners insurance premiums rise? Having neighbors who file claims. Insurance companies create rates by ZIP code, points out Amy Bach, executive director of United Policyholders, a consumer advocacy group. “It’s not just the claims you file, it’s the claims your neighbors file, and sometimes it’s just the insurance company just plain trying to make more profit,” she says.
What’s a Homeowner to Do?
1. Don’t play your insurance claim card unless you have a catastrophic loss. 2. Don’t file a claim for less than your deductible. If it’s a close call, say a $750 claim on a policy that has a $500 deductible, think before you file. Is the $250 you’d get ($750 claim less $500 deductible) worth the chance that your premium will rise? 3. Check your permanent insurance record, called a CLUE report. It’s a list of every claim you’ve filed in every property you’ve insured and all the claims filed for your property in the past five to seven years. 4. Ask that mistakes in your CLUE insurance report be fixed. If you called to ask a question and it got recorded as a claim, for instance, get that corrected. 5. Think really hard before you file a second, or worse, a third claim. If you’ve had past claims or prior owners filed claims, every claim could be the one that’s one claim too many and causes the company to tell you they’re not renewing your policy or raising your rates substantially. I would tell you exactly how many claims is too many, but there’s no universal, industry-wide official
number of claims that is too many, according to Michael Barry, vice president of media relations for the Insurance Information Institute. He points out that insurers have to take natural disasters and other community-wide events into account. For example, there are likely homeowners in the Northeast who’ve filed three claims because they were hit by Hurricane Irene, the derecho that dropped the tree on my house, and Superstorm Sandy. Personally, I suspect the magic number is three. Bach — despite 29 years of advocating for consumers and analyzing insurance issues – has never been able to uncover the magic number either. “It feels like three claims in five years will get you canceled,” she agreed. “But I don’t know what it is.” United Policyholders dug into the issue when it attempted to restrict insurance companies in California from levying rate increases following minor claims, but the rules remained a mystery to the consumer advocacy group. You could ask your agent or call your insurance company, but it’s hard to find someone who knows and will tell you what the company’s rules are when you file a claim, Bach says. And by the way, she adds, your company may pay your agent an annual incentive based on how many claims his customers file — so the fewer claims you file, the more money he makes. The bottom-line: Every time you file a claim, it’s a financial crapshoot. So don’t file unless there’s major money at stake. And if you decide to call your insurance company to discuss the issue, you literally need to repeatedly say that you’re not, not, not filing a claim.

You Can’t Detect These 4 Stinky Smells, But Your Guests Sure Can. Here’s How to Sweeten Your Home By: Stacey Freed Stand in your kitchen and take a deep breath. Smell that? From last night’s fish to your son’s nasty lacrosse pads (why did he leave them on the table?), you probably can’t detect any of your home’s rankest odors. You’ve got nose blindness. “You adapt to the smells around you,” says Dr. Richard Doty, the director of the Smell and Taste Center at the University of Pennsylvania. On a sensory level, your processing mechanism becomes less sensitive to the continuous stimuli. Or, on a cognitive level, you can become habituated to the smells and basically learn to ignore them. Or you can do both. But on a I-don’t-want-my-houseto-stink level, you don’t have to be resigned to living with odors — even if you can’t smell them yourself. Here are some of the most common nose blindness culprits, and how to ban them from your home.
pet hair loves tight spaces like the border between the carpet and the wall, the edges of your steps and that little crack of space between the stove and your cabinets. Hopefully urine isn’t the issue, but to be sure, you can use a black light to out any dried stains your pet was hoping you’d never notice. Use more of that baking soda followed by a half-water, half-vinegar solution to neutralize the odor. Lots of people also swear by store-bought neutralizers, like Nature’s Miracle.
First, you’ll want to bust up those existing odors. Then, you’ll want to make sure they never return. A solution of one-part bleach to four-parts water and some elbow grease will help you scrub away mildew. Although bleach can be used to clean mold too, it usually isn’t necessary. A regular household cleaner can do the trick. To prevent mildew and mold from returning, consider running a dehumidifier or improving air circulation and sunlight exposure
4. Fade Fridge and Freezer Funk
1. Love Your Pet. Destroy Their Smells.
There’s one easy way to tell if your home smells like pets: Do you have them? Then yeah, unless you’re an obsessive cleaner and groomer, your abode has at least some Fido funk. It could be pee, but more likely it’s just hair, gunky ears, and weeks-old slobber. The first step to cleaning up pet smells is — sorry, pets — cleaning the pets themselves. Bathe and groom them regularly. Then, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. If they have a favorite couch or cushion, cover it with a blanket and run it — and the cushion cover — through the wash weekly. Every time you vacuum, start with a hearty sprinkle of baking soda on the carpet. And use that crevice tool liberally;
Eventually, all the dead skin and body oils you shed while sleeping are going to build up, and stink they will, especially if your bedding is older. You can’t exactly toss your mattress in the washing machine, so you’ll have to deal with it where it lies. But it’s an easy fix: Sprinkle baking soda on it, let it sit for an hour or more, and then vacuum up the soda. (This works for memory foam, too.) Add a couple drops of essential oil to the soda (drip directly into the box and shake it well to mix evenly) for a pleasant smell. Bonus: Lavender has been shown to help you sleep.
2. Battle Basement Mustiness … With Onion?
Fortunately, nose blindness only affects one of your senses, and you don’t need your nose to verify a basement with a musty smell. Mustiness is caused by mildew and mold, which — for better or for worse — your eyeballs can easily detect. Do a careful inspection of your basement, from the darkest corner to the surface of every cardboard box or bookshelf. If you find gray or white splotches anywhere, it’s probably mildew. If it’s fuzzy, (oh no!) it’s mold.
in the affected area if possible. For chronic mustiness, you can deodorize rooms by setting out bowls of vinegar, cat litter, baking soda, or — as crazy as this sounds — an onion also will do the trick. Cut one in half and let it sit in a bowl in the room. The onion smell goes away in a few hours, and so will the dankness.
3. Mind Mattress Smells
Similar to pet odors, knowing if your mattress could smell is easy: Do you have a human body with skin and oils? Do you sleep on it?
It’s your fridge and freezer’s job to keep your food fresh, but they need a little help staying fresh themselves. Itty bitty food bits hang out long after you’ve tossed the item from which they came. Although you might not notice the odor creep, you may notice your ice starting to taste funny or see those food morsels start to accumulate in the corners of your fridge shelves. If you see or taste something icky, you can bet others can smell something icky. To zap odors from from your freezer and fridge, unplug and empty them and do a thorough cleaning with a mix of hot water and baking soda. You can sanitize with a solution of one tablespoon bleach and one gallon of water. Let it air out for 15 minutes. Try wiping it down with vinegar for extra odor eliminating, or even leave the door open for a few days. What better excuse is there for a long weekend away, or to treat yourself to takeout?

A new FHA rule enabling the purchase of a home with a reverse mortgage is giving senior adults greater flexibility when it comes to where they live and the type of home they live in. A house purchased under this new program must be a primary residence and will require a large down payment. However, there is no repayment of the reverse mortgage due for as long as senior home-owners live in their home. This new means of financing the purchase of a home has created the opportunity for seniors to downsize, move to a house that is more comfortable, safe, and is convenient to services, or move closer to family. The qualifying age for a reverse mortgage is 62 or older, and it does not affect social security and medicare benefits. “We are experiencing a surge of seniors who are buying a home with the reverse mortgage, Bill Binkey, Frontier Financial said. To learn more about the reverse mortgage purchase program, you can contact Bill Binkey. He will provide a free reverse mortgage informational package and confidential estimate. Green Kitchen Flooring: Linoleum and Cork By: John Riha
18
If you are wondering which of your kitchen flooring options are green, you need to first ask: What makes for a green kitchen floor? Linoleum flooring and cork flooring are two dandy options.
sharp objects. • The surface pattern can quickly fade.
Both: • Have natural antimicrobial properties. • Are very durable. Because the colors applied to them permeate all the way through the material, they stay bright as they wear. • Linoleum flooring and cork flooring are comparable pricewise to high-end vinyl products. By the way, steer clear of vinyl, because its manufacture is tough on the environment—and the stuff it releases into the air is hard on your health. It doesn’t pass the durability test either: • It’s easily damaged by

renewable, biodegradable materials including cork and linseed oil. Linseed oil can off-gas, so keep that in mind if you’re sensitive to irritants. But it doesn’t present the health hazard that vinyl does. Cleaning linoleum flooring needn’t be an ordeal; it’s easily washable with soap and water. And it now comes in chic patterns and colors that complement contemporary decor. It’s even naturally antistatic, which means it repels rather than collects dirt. Linoleum flooring comes in tiles or sheets. Make sure your installer seals the seams, so gunk doesn’t accumulate. Linoleum flooring tolerates traffic and offers some cushioning underfoot. It’s resistant to moisture but susceptible to staining, so
some manufacturers add a coating to protect against spills and scratches. Without this protection, linoleum flooring has to be cleaned and polished every two years.
Comfy cork can be harvested without killing a single tree Cost: $2-$6 per sq.ft.; installation adds $5 to $10 per sq.ft. Lifespan: 50+ years (high-density cork) with proper maintenance Brands include Expanko Globus Cork Cork flooring is a sustainable product made from tree bark that grows back and can be 928HOMES.COM

harvested repeatedly. Plus, the industry is carefully regulated to reduce environmental impact. Look for cork flooring labeled “high density”—it’s more durable. Cork flooring is waterproof and slightly soft underfoot, which makes it both moisture-resistant and comfy. Got light sleepers and a klutz in the house? Cork flooring absorbs ambient sound, and it flexes a little when objects are dropped on it, making it less likely than a hard surface to scratch.
Cork flooring is made in 12x12-inch tiles and 1x3-foot planks with a surface that’s textured and slip-resistant. Damp mopping is better than the traditional soap and water treatment. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions, but whatever you’d use on a hardwood floor will generally work for cork. Treat cork flooring with a sealant every 3 to 4 years to prevent scratches and stop moisture from penetrating seams between tiles.
