Seniors now have greater flexibility and new opportunity to purchase their retirement home A new FHA rule enabling the purchase of a home with a reverse mortgage is giving senior adults greater flexibility when it comes to where they live and the type of home they live in. A house purchased under this new program must be a primary residence and will require a large down payment. However, there is no repayment of the reverse mortgage due for as long as senior home-owners live in their home. This new means of financing the purchase of a home has created the opportunity for seniors to downsize, move to a house that is more comfortable, safe, and is convenient to services, or move closer to family. The qualifying age for a reverse mortgage is 62 or older, and it does not affect social security and medicare benefits. “We are experiencing a surge of seniors who are buying a home with the reverse mortgage,” Bill Binkey, Frontier Financial said. To learn more about the reverse mortgage purchase program, you can contact Bill Binkey. He will provide a free reverse mortgage informational package and confidential estimate. Are Electronic Door Locks Safe?
By: Lisa Kaplan Gordon
Here’s a look at the latest high-tech locks and some advice on whether they’re the best option for you.
High-tech locks — fingerprint, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi enabled systems — are transforming the way you enter your home, threatening to make house keys as obsolete as rotary phones. But do these easy-access locks make your home more secure? Do they add value? Or will next week’s bright idea make these fancy entry systems passé before you pay them off?
Are You Tech-Savvy?
Keyless locks are great for tech-savvy homeowners, says Marianna Perry, a former director of the National Crime Prevention Institute. But the latest isn’t the greatest for someone who struggles to keep up with each “smart” gizmo that comes down the pike. If you still can’t program your DVR to record “Downtown Abbey,” keyless locks probably aren’t for you. “The lock needs to fit the user,” Perry says.
The Latest Locks
Biometric: Locks that recognize your fingerprints and open with a swipe of your finger. ($280-$340) Key fob (proximity lock): Carry a fob in your pocket, and these locks open automatically
or with a simple tap; or press the fob button and unlock the door as soon as you pull into the driveway. ($220) Smart phone-controlled: Your smart phone syncs with your lock via Bluetooth, enabling you to control entrance remotely and keep track of who comes and goes. Some locks recognize your phone and open automatically as you approach. Some will text you when someone else opens the door. ($200) Surveillance lock: Combines easy access with surveillance and takes a picture of whoever opens your door. You can program codes for specific people, and the lock will offer a warm LED greeting when they arrive. ($280)
Keyless Locks Add Marketability
“It’s a sales tool,” says Robert Siciliano, a security expert for Schlage locks. Siciliano’s home is outfitted with a touchpad lock that glows blue and can be activated via cellphone. “The first thing people see when they walk to my door is that touchpad, and they want to know all about it,” Siciliano says. “It’s an attention-getter.”
Do High-Tech Locks Make Your House More Secure?
Not much. Burglars mostly enter your home through an unlocked door or by forcing open a window or door. In fact, criminals admit that security systems with camera surveillance — not locks (smart or otherwise) — are the biggest deterrent against burglaries. “Burglars are criminals of opportunity,” says Glen Mowrey, a retired North Carolina deputy police chief. “They’re looking for the least resistance.” A biometric deadbolt lock, which scans fingerprints, can cost $300 and be less secure than “Consumer Reports’” top-rated Medeco Maxum 11WC60L, a regular keyed lock that costs $190. In CR tests, the Medeco Maxum defied forced entry — the most common type of home break-in — better than the hightech locks tested. “Smart locks are more convenient, but not any stronger than regular locks,” says Joey Lachausse of the Associated Locksmiths of America. In fact, some smart locks are easier to defeat and can be more annoying to use than traditional locks:
•
•
•
In testing, a team of British lock hackers easily opened a fingerprintreading lock by inserting a paperclip into its backup key chamber. During a power outage, some electronic locks fail or disengage, forcing you to use a backup key — but then your system isn’t keyless, is it? Circuit boards that control electronic locks can fail.
Top Security Tips
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Replace hollow-core wood exterior doors with solid wood or steel doors. Reinforce wood door jambs with additional steel plates, which make the door harder to kick in. Install strike plates made of heavy-duty metal, and secure them with 3-inch screws. Replace sidelight glass with shatter-resistant polycarbonate. Lock doors whenever you leave the house, even for a short time. In fact, lock doors and windows when you’re home, too.

Detect Termites and Other Wood-Destroying Insects By: Brad Broberg
One of the biggest threats to your house comes in the form of tiny pests that silently and invisibly consume or live in wood—from the sills of your foundation to the rafters of your roof. Known by exterminators as WDIs, wooddestroying insects cause more than $1 billion a year in property damage in the United States, according to Orkin, a nationwide pest-control company. “It’s not unheard of to see a home with termite damage in the tens of thousands of dollars,” says Greg Bauman, senior scientist with the National Pest Management Association. “I’ve personally seen a home with $1 million in repair costs. It probably would have been better to bulldoze the house.” That may be an extreme case, but it demonstrates that what you can’t see can hurt you. WDIs can be hard to detect with the naked eye unless you know what to look for. Depending on moisture levels, climate, and location of a colony (they’re more active in warm, moist conditions), it could take three to eight years before the signs of an infestation—serious damage to your house—are apparent. “If you don’t catch them early, you’re setting yourself up to spend a lot more on both treatment and repairs than you otherwise would,” says Ron Harrison, technical director at Orkin. Here are a few tips for how to spot wood-destroying pests.
Virginia to Texas. Clues: You can suss out an infestation by poking wood with a screwdriver; if the tip goes in easily or you hear a hollow sound when you tap the wood with the handle, you might have a problem. Be on the lookout for a thin gritty gray-brown film on the surface of damaged material. And look for narrow mud tubes on both the interior and exterior of your walls and foundation. Termites travel though these tubes between their colony below the ground and their dinner above—your house. The one time they come out in the open is when they swarm. Swarms consist of flying “reproductives” that leave the colony, mainly in spring, to mate and start new colonies. You may not spot the swarm itself because the love bugs shed their wings and head underground within a few hours. Instead, look for discarded wings that resemble fish scales. Swarms can emerge indoors or outdoors. Evidence of an indoor swarm, such as discarded wings or the corpses of termites that couldn’t find a way out, is a sure sign your home is infested. Most likely to damage: “Almost anything that contains cellulose, the main component of wood, including wood paneling, paper products, cardboard boxes, art canvases, the paper covering of sheet rock, carpeting,” according to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Termites
Habitat: Carpenter ants bore into damp and decayed wood to make nests. Most common in northern states, these pests forage through your home, mostly at night, looking for water and food. They’ll eat just about anything people do and are especially fond
Habitat: The most common type, subterranean termites, cause 95% of all termite damage in North America. Found in every state except Alaska, termites are most prevalent in the South; the so-called termite belt stretches across the Southeast from
Carpenter ants
of sweets, fat, and protein. Clues: Look for swarmers in the spring and for piles of frass—a mixture of wood shavings and fecal matter. Rustling sounds may indicate a nest. Most likely to damage: “Tunneling may cause serious structural damage if it occurs in key timbers,” according to the Maryland Cooperative Extension. “The existence of a carpenter ant colony inside a structure is usually most important as a sign that there is or has been a water problem.”
Carpenter bees
Habitat: Common in all regions, carpenter bees burrow into wood— preferably unfinished—to make nests. They drill almost perfectly round entry holes about 1 to 2 inches in diameter that lead to tunnels where they lay their eggs. Clues: Look for them hovering near eaves, decks, and siding. Most likely to damage: Carpenter bees are less likely to cause serious structural damage than termites or carpenter ants. However, their entry holes can allow moisture to enter the wood.
Powderpost beetles
Habitat: These wood-boring beetles lay their eggs in cracks, crevices, and wood pores. The hatching larvae then feed on the wood. Present in all regions. Clues: Look for powdery deposits of frass and pinhead-size holes made by adult beetles exiting the wood. The peak time for beetles to emerge is May through August. Most likely to damage: Anobiid powderpost beetles attack softwood species such as spruce, pine, and fir that are commonly used to make floor joists, wall studs, and other structural lumber, according to
the North Carolina Cooperative Extension. Lyctid powderpost beetles attack only hardwoods, such as oak, ash, hickory, and maple used in furniture, cabinets, wooden floors, and some interior moldings/trim.
Call in a pest inspector
No matter how vigilant you are, consider scheduling a professional inspection at least every few years, says David Tamny, owner of Professional Pest Inspection in Columbus, Ohio, and president of the American Society of Home Inspectors. “Professionals bring a skill set that enable them to spot things a lay person could miss,” Tamny says. Many pest control companies will perform a free inspection for WDIs and for conditions conducive to infestations, such as moisture. Keep in mind, though, that pest control companies hope the inspection leads to the purchase of treatment services. Hiring someone who performs only inspections eliminates that potential conflict of interest, Tamny says. A WDI inspection will likely cost between $100 to $200, depending on the size of the home. Expect the inspector to pull on coveralls and spend about an hour probing your home from the attic to the crawl space for visible signs of infestation and damage. For around $100 to $400 a year, some pest control companies will perform annual WDI inspections that come with warranties. If the inspection reveals WDIs and/or damage, the company will eradicate the infestation and make any necessary repairs at no extra charge. One possible catch: You may be required to sign up for a round of preventive treatment at a one-time cost of $1,000 to $5,000.

Is It OK to Use the Bathroom When You’re Touring a House? (and 4 Other Questions You’re Afraid to Ask) By: Stacey Freed It’s a marathon house-hunting day. As you check out listing No. 5’s brand new windows, it suddenly hits you: “Oh man, I have to go to the bathroom.” Should you, or shouldn’t you? Navigating do’s and don’ts can be totally awkward, so we asked the pros everything most buyers secretly want to know.
Well, Can I Use the Bathroom?
If you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go — but don’t just wander off and take care of business. It might not work in every house. Literally. “Ask permission,” says Pat Vredevoogd Combs, past president of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® who works and lives in Grand Rapids, Mich. Vacant houses, especially in winter, may have the water shut off, so there’s no way to flush. That’s something you really want to know before you go. And if you’re at a busy open house, being in the loo for more than a minute means other potential buyers can’t check out the facilities — and may not want to after you’ve, um, done your business. To be safe, schedule in a few pit stops at restaurants or gas stations along the way, suggests Vredevoogd Combs.
Is It OK to Bring in My Coffee?
We’re pretty sure ordering house hunters to forgo coffee qualifies as “cruel and unusual punishment” in some states. But if you’re carrying a drink, be careful — unless you’re
prepared to go mano a mano with the floor. “So many first-time home buyers are millennials, and I almost never see them without a cup of Starbucks in their hand,” Vredevoogd Combs says. “I had one guy spill his coffee on white carpeting and we had to get down on our hands and knees to clean it up.” Food, on the other hand, is no bueno, unless the seller has left out cookies. By all means, take one, but eat it in the kitchen. Preferably over a napkin.
Can I Peek in the Closet?
“Absolutely,” says Tg Glazer, 2016 president of the New Jersey Association of REALTORS®. “Buying a home is probably the biggest purchase you’re ever going to make, and you need to check out everything.” Basically, look all you want, but don’t rifle around. You’re shopping for closet space, not a new wardrobe.
How About a Quick Selfie With This Awesome, Lemon-Colored Range?
With smartphones being practically an appendage for many buyers, snapping pics to
share with friends and family is so easy. But hold your trigger finger, especially if you’re planning to share the images online. Whether you can take photos and videos “seems to be a regional custom,” Vredevoogd Combs says. “In some cases, sellers have valuable things and don’t even want their homes promoted online. Ask permission first.”
Can I Plop Down on That Chaise Lounge?
Vredevoogd Combs says she’s not a fan. “Feeling comfortable enough to want to sit on the furniture might be a good intent to buy, but it isn’t your furniture and you’re not buying it.” Plus, that cozy looking couch or comfy bed might be staged — air beds or cardboard boxes wearing fancy clothes — so you might take a spill. If you need to sit, for health reasons or that sprained ankle from your last marathon, just ask. That’s not unreasonable. The bottom line is the old-fashioned Golden Rule: Do unto others’ homes as you’d have them do unto yours. “Be on your best behavior,” says Vredevoogd Combs. Pretend the seller is there — and sometimes they are, even if you can’t see them. They might be waiting next door at a neighbor’s house and wander back at any minute. So it’s also a good idea to keep comments to yourself. You wouldn’t want them to overhear how much you love the master suite — that could mess up your negotiating power if you decide to buy.

Is Your Tree Going to Fall Over? By: Lisa Kaplan Gordon A mature tree can account for as much as 10% of your assessed property value, depending on your market. With that much at stake, you sure don’t want to have to yell, “Timber!” Here’s how to tell if one of your trees is in danger of falling over, and what you can do about it.
How to Inspect Your Trees
No one knows your trees as well as you. So after they leaf out in the spring, leaf off in the fall, and after a big storm, walk around and look at your lovelies, top to bottom, noticing changes in foliage, branches, roots, and bark. • Inspect all sides of the tree, both up close and from a distance. • Check for cuts in or peeling bark. • Use binoculars to inspect the tree’s crown for dead wood and brown leaves.
Multiple Trunks
A tree with multiple trunks, or with splits in one trunk, can be unstable. Danger signs: • V-shaped or U-shaped multiple trunks are weak points for mature trees. The connective wood where the trunks come together may lose strength — and be more likely to split — with age and when storms occur. • Cracks that extend deeply into or through the trunk.
destabilizing the tree. Construction equipment can scrape tree bark, providing a gateway set for disease and infestation. Danger signs of construction stress (which can show up immediately or years later): • Damaged bark • Reduced, smaller, or no foliage • Premature autumn color • Mushrooms, conks, and carpenter ants at the base of the tree are a sign of decay and rot. Cures: Prevention is your best option.
Leaning Trees
Trees usually don’t grow straight, and a little lean is normal. But when your tree starts looking like the Tower of Pisa because of poor weight distribution or anchor root damage, it’s likely unstable. This is a good time to call an arborist. Danger signs: • Cracked or heaving soil, especially on the side opposite the lean. • Exposed roots around the base of the tree. Cures: • Prune branches to distribute weight better. • Brace the tree trunk with cables attached to stakes on opposite sides of the tree. Make sure to pad the tree before placing cables around tender bark.
Cures: An arborist can stabilize split trunks by attaching cables between trunks and branches high in the tree. Cables won’t repair existing damage, but they will increase the safety, especially in strong winds, and extend the life of your tree. This is dangerous work best left to experts, who will charge between $600 and $2,000; annual cable maintenance costs $100-$200.
Construction Destruction
Construction is tough on trees. Installing a driveway, putting on an addition, and digging up utility lines puts nearby trees under stress. Construction can damage shallow feeder roots, starving and
Before construction, set up a barricade around the tree; for each inch in diameter of the tree’s trunk, add a foot of protection. For example, an 8-inchdiameter tree needs a barricade with an 8-foot radius. If the tree is damaged by construction, act fast: • Prune to reduce weight and remove damaged limbs. • Install cables or bracing rods. • Water deeply. • Aerate compacted soil around the root zone.
An Arborist to the Rescue
If you think your trees are changing, or you see any of the major warning signs above, they could be “hazard trees” — trees likely to fall
and destroy what’s near them — like your house. This is a good time to call a certified arborist. Get recommendations from friends or neighborhood list serves. Or, contact the International Society of Arboriculture, which maintains a list of certified arborists. An arborist can help save your tree, or let you know if it’s beyond help. For example, bacteria or bugs could be harming your tree, and an arborist’s inspection ($150-$350) can diagnose which disease, trauma, or fungus is the culprit. An arborist also can determine if your tree is decaying internally, something that may not yet be obvious. Arborists can either fix the problem, or calculate the risk of the tree falling and the likely objects it could damage. That calculation will help you decide if it’s worth spending money to keep the tree alive and upright, remove the tree, or just let nature take its course and topple the tree at will.
What About Lightning Risks?
If you live on the highest hill in the neighborhood, and own the tallest tree on the block, that’s pretty sweet. But it also increases your chances of a lightning strike. If lightning strikes one side of a tree, your tree might close the wound and live its life. But if a bolt travels through the trunk, exploding wood and bark and damaging roots, it might be lights out. To protect trees from lightning, an arborist can ground a tree with a copper cable system that extends from near the top of major trunks down to copper ground rods. These systems can cost $1,500, and may not be worth the money to protect a tree you could replace for $150.

Low-Maintenance Lawn Alternatives: Ground Cover Read h ouselogic. c om/home-advice/ If you more: want ahttp://www. yard that demands less time, money, and water, consider ground cover rather than a traditional lawn. By: Laura Fisher Kaiser
Americans have long had a soft spot for lawns. Turf grass covers nearly 47 million acres in the U.S., according to the Lawn Institute. But there’s plenty that’s not green about all that green. For starters, the average household dumps 60 gallons of water a day on conventional lawns. Toxic lawn herbicides and pesticides run off into lakes and streams. Gas-powered mowers spew pollution into the air. And then there’s all that time spent watering, weeding, seeding, sodding, thatching, and mulching. If you’re looking for an alternative, consider replacing some or all of your highmaintenance turf with ground covers that form walkable “carpets,” and innovative grasses that require little or no water or mowing once established. In turn, you’ll reduce the need for irrigation, stop washing harmful chemicals into the watershed, add depth and texture to your landscape, and spend your spare time enjoying your yard instead of manicuring it.
Creeping Perennials, Clover, and Other Ground Covers
There’s a ground cover to meet most needs, whether you’re planting a pathway, a hedge, or a broad swath of green. They run the gamut of foliage textures and colors, and many have wonderful flowers. Some varieties are ground-hugging and feel delicious under bare feet. Others grow up to two feet tall, making them ideal as barriers
or landscape punctuation. Look for attributes that meet your needs: child-durable, deer-resistant, droughttolerant, shade-loving. Mixing them up is not only aesthetically pleasing, it’s also good for the landscape: Diversity increases resistance to pests and disease and reduces the need for fertilizer and pesticides. Here are some popular choices. Creeping perennials: Tight to the ground, these plants are especially good for cushy green carpets. They keep out weeds and allow air, water, and nutrients to get to plant roots. Many work equally well in rock gardens or in crevices between stepping stones, in full or partial sun. These include mat-forming New Zealand Brass Buttons (Cotula squalida) and Scotch or Irish Moss (Sagina subulata), which isn’t a moss at all but a perennial that forms a cushiony blooming carpet. Some, like Blue Star Creeper (Laurentia fluviatilis), which has tiny green foliage, bear up to heavy foot traffic. Creeping Jenny (Convolvulus arvensis) has an extensive root system that makes it quick to spread and tough to kill. That’s a good thing if you’re looking for a tough turf alternative but a problem if it creeps into beds where you don’t want it. Besides being good creepers, many ground-hugging perennial herbs are often nicely scented, hardy under foot traffic, and even edible. These include chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), which has fern-like
foliage and white flowers with yellow centers; Corsican mint (Mentha requienii), which thrives in shade, exudes a minty smell when trod upon, and is edible; and various thymes (Woolly, Red, Prostrate), which feature dainty flowers and work well between pavers or as a low mounding carpet. Creeping perennials cost $6 to $10 per plant. A 15-foot-by-20-foot area with plants two inches apart (for instant density) requires 300 plants. But if you’re patient enough to wait a year or so for them to spread, you can buy fewer plants and space them 12 inches apart. Clover: Although clover has gotten a bad rap as a weed, it’s actually not a weed at all. In fact, a clover lawn (or, for high-traffic areas, a clover-grass mix) has many advantages. Sweet-scented, inexpensive, and quite durable, white clover (Trifolium repens) grows in any kind of soil, stays green even during low-water periods, and feels lovely underfoot. Low-growing clover doesn’t need regular cutting, nor does it need fertilizer, but an occasional mow will encourage new growth and discourage bees. If you don’t mind the bees, consider letting your clover bloom, which benefits the bees and the environment. Clover is an inexpensive ground cover option, costing under about $10 per pound. Clover seed coverage varies widely depending on the species of clover you choose and the supplier’s recommendations.

The Most Common Spring Cleaning Mistake (Plus 8 Others) By: Jamie Wiebe Once there’s even a glimmer of spring, you’re ready to throw open your windows and let the breeze blow away the winter funk. Well, you might want to rethink that spring cleaning ritual this year. If you’re an allergy sufferer (and who isn’t?), that’s the last thing you want to do, says Dr. Neeta Ogden, a spokesperson for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. “It will allow pollen to settle in your home.” If you really can’t skip that spring breeze, avoid opening them in the morning, pollen counts are highest in the morning; they decrease late in the day and at night. And that’s not the only common spring-cleaning mistake homeowners make. Here are eight more to avoid:
1. Not Looking Up
You’ve worked up a sweat and everything’s starting to sparkle, but then you realize your ceiling fan is coated in dust. Uh, oh. Once you start wiping the fan, dust will scatter on what you’ve already cleaned. That’s why you should always look up to see what needs dusting before you start cleaning at eye level. Tackle hard-to-reach places like the tops of bookshelves, crown molding, and window ledges.
2. Starting to Clean Without a Plan
You wake up motivated — today you’re going to get all your spring cleaning done! But by noon, your house is in disarray, and not one single room
is finished. Ugh. That’s why Briana Norde, owner of Caliber Cleaning Inc. says it pays to break up the biggest cleaning project of the year into smaller, more manageable tasks. She recommends conquering your hardest job first, like the kitchen, which she calls the “most time-consuming room.” With that first accomplishment under your belt, you’ll have the momentum to take on the remaining tasks. The key is to give yourself plenty of breaks. And there’s nothing wrong with spreading it out over several days.
3. Ignoring That WeirdLooking Vacuum Attachment
Don’t let your carpet hog the vacuum. The crevice tool, Norde says, “is not used nearly enough.” Use it between your wall and refrigerator to get out the accumulated dust that’s otherwise unreachable, and run it around the edge of your baseboards to clean where standard upright vacuums can’t reach.
4. Skipping the Mattress
Think of how much time you spend in your bed. Yet, you probably clean the top of
your fridge more often than your mattress. Your mattress harbors millions of dust mites, which cause various respiratory conditions including sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, and skin rashes (not to mention just being plain gross). “[Dust mites’] food is human skin scales, so the bed is just heaven for them,” says Ogden. She recommends using a vapor steam cleaner to root out the itchy devils, then wrapping it in an anti-allergen mattress protector. At the very least, sprinkle your mattress with baking soda and let it sit for awhile. Then (using the attachment mentioned above) vacuum it up.
do not. Ogden recommends making your own solution of water and vinegar (use a fifty-fifty ratio), which will keep most surfaces clean and germ-free.
5. Relying on Harsh Cleaners
7. Leaving the Clutter
There’s a reason many commercial cleaners have the words “danger,” “hazard,” or “caution,” on their labels. Something in the ingredients is toxic in one form or another, and most all could aggravate allergies and asthma. So, “don’t go crazy with cleaners you don’t need,” says Ogden. Moldy bathrooms may scream for bleach, but most surfaces
6. Using Chemical Air Fresheners
You want your home to smell fresh, so it’s tempting to reach for that mountain-rain-springfresh-scent in a can. But aerosol air fresheners contain high levels of toxic pollutants like phthalates, which can affect hormone levels, cause reproductive abnormalities, and increase allergies and asthma. Yikes. Try homemade (and lessexpensive) alternatives, such as potpourri, or essential oils and water in a spray bottle.
All of the spring cleaning tips and advice are useless if you don’t declutter first. “We tend to not clean well around clutter,” says Ogden. “You’re not going to reach the dust there.” Make sure toys are put away, books are back on the bookshelf, and paperwork is filed before you begin the cleaning process. Otherwise, you’re leaving room for dust and pollen to hide — making spring cleaning all for naught.
8. Treating It Like a Chore
If you dread spring cleaning, this should make you feel better: a Harvard study found those who treated cleaning as beneficial exercise saw a decrease in weight, body mass index, blood pressure, and more. That’s what we call a trifecta: living in a clean home, breathing allergy-free air, and feeling great!

7 Spots You Keep Missing When You Clean That Everyone But You Notices By: Stacey Freed
You’re immune to the dirtiest places in your home. But your guests aren’t. Here’s what to do about it. Admit it: It’s easy to get a little “Judge Judy” inside someone else’s home. We notice gunk on the floor, cobwebs in the corners, and dust on the overhead fan. But guess what? Unless you’re Adrian Monk, you’ve probably got some gunky places that your friends notice, but you don’t. (Sad trombone.) This is why we tracked down a domestic guru to help us with this article. No matter how hard it is to find dirt hideaways on your own, a little expert advice can make it all OK. Jan M. Dougherty, author of “The Lost Art of House Cleaning: A Clean House Is a Happy Home,” revealed the seven spots you’re likely to miss — and the best ways to make them presentable, stat:
(Handy tip: When making the Krud Kutter solution, put the water in first. “Otherwise it’ll bubble over,” she says.)
1. Light fixtures. Look up. Your light fixtures are loaded with dust and dead bugs. Take them down, spritz with a cleaning solution, and wipe clean. Dougherty uses a solution of five parts water and one part Krud Kutter, a non-toxic odorless all-purpose product.
3. Dust collectors. The TV mount, picture frames, computer printer, keyboards, and remotes are great dust collectors. Use a microfiber rag that you’ve sprayed lightly with vinegar to banish it all. Vinegar isn’t electrostatically charged, so dust will take longer to return to that spot.
2. Toilet body. You probably clean your tank fairly often, but what about all the bits and pieces that surround the tank, and the floor itself? For porcelain thrones, Dougherty recommends Soft Scrub with bleach to clean the minuscule cracks that form in the glaze over time. For any non-porcelain parts, she says vinegar will do. Start with the top of the tank and spray all the way around — the lid, under the lid, the seat, down to and on the surrounding floor, and even the walls behind the toilet.
4. Drawer organizers. Crumbs and dirt love those little compartments. Suck them up with a handy vac, or spray with vinegar and wipe away with a rag. Don’t wait until the crumbs are three inches deep and have taken root in the drawer. If that’s the case, break it down and clean with the Krud Kutter solution. 5. Ice maker. Old ice absorbs food odors, so it’s a good idea to clean and sanitize the whole system every once in a while. Stop the machine from making more ice, pull out the ice bin, and dump the ice. Wash the bin and ice maker with vinegar, or put the bin in the dishwasher if your manual says it’s safe to do so. Wipe the ice maker with a dry rag to remove moisture. 6. Appliance handles. You touch them so many times every day. And you never think about it. Spray them all down with the Krud Kutter mix and then wipe. “One night a week, I take the knobs off the stove, remove the dish and the grease
screen from the [over-the-range] microwave, and take the bowl with utensils that sits next to my stove and put them all in the dishwasher,” Dougherty says. “Do this before bed and by the morning you’ve cleaned half your kitchen, yet touched nothing.” 7. Glass and mirrors. Dougherty washes dull, smudged glass and mirrors with straight vinegar. Be aware that if you’ve been using commercial cleaners it may take “four, five, six, maybe seven cleanings with vinegar to get all the wax off the glass,” she says. Bonus tip: “When you go into a room to clean you shouldn’t have to think. You should be able to turn up the music and rock and roll your way around the room,” Dougherty says. She uses a method she calls “The Path” — start in one corner, progress around the perimeter, and then head to the middle. Clean everything in your path as you go around the room.
