FROM THE DIRECTOR
Winter and spring are great seasons to explore Glendale’s parks and recreation amenities. The weather is ideal with cooler temperatures, the traditional rain received during this time of year fosters tree and plant growth, and the spring flowers begin to bloom –all creating the perfect setting to get outdoors and enjoy our parks, recreation activities, and trails. I am excited to announce that the Arizona Parks & Recreation Association (APRA) has selected the City of Glendale’s Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events Department as the winner of two awards for excellence in Parks and Recreation. One award is the 2022 Partnership Award, recognizing our Recreation staff for their efforts in collaborating with Televeda, a web-based portal that offers recreation programming, to create the Glendale Recreation Online Wellness program, or G.R.O.W. This new program allows the opportunity to offer classes to our community from the comfort of their homes, or in person at the Glendale Adult Center. The second award is the 2022 Outstanding Public Official Award. Vice Mayor Jamie Aldama was selected as the recipient of this award for his great support of the Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events Department and the work that we are doing in our communities. He has championed the re-opening of the Community Centers in Glendale to bring back city-managed programs, continued to fund with private funding the HookA-Kid Fishing Clinic at Bonsall Park during challenging budget years, and has been heavily involved in the Disparity Report as part of our Parks and Recreation Master Plan process.
In other exciting news, our parks keep getting better because of people like you. At O’Neil Park, Glendale volunteers, in partnership with Fiesta Bowl Charities and KABOOM!, built a community-inspired playground in mid-November. As part of the Fiesta Bowl Charities Project, approximately 80,000 square feet of turf recycled from the Guaranteed Rate Bowl plus a custom Fiesta Bowl electronic scoreboard will also be donated to the site shortly following the bowl game on December 27.
At Sahuaro Ranch Park and Thunderbird Conservation Park, community engagement conducted throughout the Fall is shaping future features at the site. Glendale voices are making positive, lasting impacts across our system.
Whether you’re looking to plug into fitness classes or sports leagues, outdoor wellness activities, or just plain relax under one of our 12,500 plus city-maintained trees, we invite you to come and celebrate Glendale’s Parks & Recreation alongside us!
