Santa Barbara Style
MUMMY MOUNTAIN - PARADISE VALLEY, ARIZONASituated near the base of Mummy Mountain in Paradise Valley, this four-bedroom, five-bathroom Santa Barbara-style home was remodeled for a blended family.
Originally built in the 1980s, the house previously had Tuscan-colored interiors, a sunken living room floor and a closed-off floor plan. Now the home sports a timeless and tailored look fulfilled by the crisp white walls and ceilings and dark wood beams accented by Spanish colonial-inspired lighting and era-painted tile.
Repurposing as much of the existing furniture as possible, the designers at Earth & Images
stayed true to a simple black and white color palette while incorporating vivid hues of red through the artwork and accessories. Textiles and surface materials such as paprika animal print and black drapery bring an unexpected element of fun throughout the home.
A few stand-out spaces in this 7,500-square-foot home include the kid’s lounge that connects the guest bedrooms and the kitchen, which features a thick butcher-block island functional for both cooking and entertaining.
In four words this home is: spirited, playful, bright, happy.
Décor
IS WHERE LUXURY LIVES
There are many ways to promote an air of luxury and grandeur in your home, from 1,000-threadcount sheets to heated tile floors, but the most effective way to set that tone is through its art and décor.
Fine and commissioned art, custom drapes, plush rugs, flawless accessories and bespoke details, all produced with superb materials and craftsmanship, create an atmosphere of opulence, style, class and quality.
Careful curation of what you place in your interior leads to an ambiance that will impress and engage your family and friends as every conversation piece triggers a new exchange of stories and perspectives.
Your design style could be traditional or contemporary and be filled with antique or brand-new furniture; it’s the tone set by your ornamentation that communicates how sumptuous a space is.
Giving the right amount of consideration to your décor — a rock star interior designer or interior decorator never hurts, either — is the spark that ignites the spellbinding sensory pleasures of living in, visiting or dreaming of a luxury home.

Creating Beauty & Delivering Happiness
IN YOUR
ART Home
SHOULD SPEAK TO YOU AND FOR YOU
by Valerie DemetrosArt has the power to uplift moods and change the spirit of a room. From art prints to digital art, contemporary sculpture to photography, art can complement and highlight the aesthetic of your home.
Today, we know even more about the science behind art. Studies show that viewing art reduces depression and anxiety while increasing feelings of love and empathy. Sounds like a win-win.
It can also be a potential investment.
If you’re not sure why and how to put art in your home, you are not alone. But when you love something enough to place it in your home, that speaks volumes. It can add personality to a room and if a piece of art speaks to you, there is a reason.
For many people, a piece of art facilitates an emotional
connection. There is a reason you chose one painting over another. And if it makes you feel good, then it works.
Of course, art can become a major design element in your
more. But it doesn’t need to be a chore. Having a work of art in your home encourages you to take risks, but it should also be comforting.
If you’re looking to add art to your home, visit as many galleries as possible to get a feel for what you like. Talk to gallery owners and artists about your needs and tastes. Most gallery owners can help you find art that fits into your home and lifestyle.
In most cases, you will be able to take it home and live with it before committing. Make sure it fits, check it out in different lighting and make sure you love it.
Museums can also help you decide what you like. Although you may not be able to buy the art, you will get an idea of what appeals to you.
You can then take your search to galleries and artists with the aesthetic you have found. And don’t overlook local artists. Supporting local artists is a great way to find unique and beautiful art.
From a design standpoint, art acts as a focal point, makes a room appear finished and immediately shows off your style. By choosing to live with art, you are choosing to bring more life into your home.
Finally, follow your instincts.
home. With a large open space, the possibilities are endless.
Many people feel intimidated with the task of choosing art, whether it’s sculpture, glasswork, metalwork, paintings and
Art is a personal choice and anything you choose will now be a part of your daily life. Go with your gut and choose only what you like. Don’t be intimidated. And don’t let anyone tell you what you like, to only buy what is popular or to buy solely for investment purposes.
Don’t buy something just because it matches your couch or fits the space. If it doesn’t speak to you, don’t purchase it.

YOUR HOME WITH THESE
Decorating Tips
Updating the look of your home without making too many drastic changes is not as difficult as it sounds.
With just a few small adjustments, your traditional room can get a modern touch, and a luxury living room can gain a soft comforting feel by changing a few lights, walls or furniture.
Here are a few quick tips you can execute to change up your room quickly.
LIVING ROOM
Adding a statement light fixture is a worthy investment. For a high-ceilinged living room, choose an eye-catching, modern chandelier to create a focal point and change the mood of the room.
Switching out your current table lamps to work with the new chandelier will immediately give a different feel to the room.
Another option for a fresh look is to replace your coffee table with a metallic or glass table. Choose a low, clean-lined table to give a modern feel to the room.
If you have a fireplace, consider painting it for an updated look. If that’s not possible, just replacing the mantle with either natural wood or painted a contrasting color can quickly transform the room.
DINING ROOM
Your first choice could be the chandelier for a quick and obvious change. But consider changing the buffet to a long floating, modern piece if possible. This provides
more space for entertaining and a new and modernized look.
Rather than exchanging the dining table, update and refresh your dining chairs for an easier change.
You can choose different styles and colors for a modern, mixed look or update with clean natural wood.
For a less-drastic option, reupholster your old, worn-out dining chairs. Choose a material that can stand up to the wear and tear, and you may even want to have contrasting patterns rather than a uniform look.
You also can add a bench to one side for more seating and a modern look, either upholstered to match the new chairs or natural wood. This does not have to match the table as it can stand out for a distinct look.
If your dining room is spacious enough, install a wall mural with perhaps a nature theme or something more dramatic, immediately transforming the room.
In both dining and living rooms, changing out artwork for an ornate or even a simple, modern mirror can give the room a completely different feel. Along with making the room feel larger, it can simplify the look and add the feeling of more light in the room.
Choose a large mirror that can become a focal point in the room.
Interior Designer or Interior Decorator?
If you’re thinking about a new look inside your home, you may be confused about whether you need an interior designer or an interior decorator. That may depend on how extensive your changes will be.
While there is some overlap in interior design and decorating, they are fundamentally different. Quite simply, interior designers can handle décor, but it doesn’t work the other way around.
It’s best to know who you need before making any calls.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Renowned designer Albert Hadley stated, “The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live.”
Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create functional spaces and it requires a degree to practice. The process of interior design follows a coordinated methodology including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process to meet the needs of the client.
Interior designers work closely with contractors and architects to design and execute plans for a functional yet beautiful space.
Good interior designers work closely to recognize what you need from your remodel. They coordinate with your architect to ensure the architectural design incorporates your needs. Designers narrow down your choices in cabinets, countertops, hardware, tile, lighting and appliances to a smaller number of items. Otherwise, you would be swimming in choices.
An interior designer helps property owners create functional, pleasing rooms. These pros consider safety, flow, space, efficiency and current trends while designing.
INTERIOR DECORATING
Decorators assist homeowners in selecting personal elements and furnishings to suit a certain theme or style.
They may not have the education, but what you want is experience. Decorators may choose a color scheme, suggest wallpaper, paint color and additional finishes. They will shop for furniture, arrange the furniture along with art and accessories and align the overall aesthetics of a space.
It’s important to understand that decorators legally can’t do design. Some pros use the terms interchangeably so be aware and ask questions.
An interior decorator will help you fashion a beautiful place to live by making aesthetic changes rather than structural. They are knowledgeable in furniture and decor decisions to come up with a unique style for you and your family. Their work begins after the structural work ends.
DÉCOR VS. DECORATION
Décor refers to the aesthetic components used to make a home more appealing and visually attractive. Home décor is comprised of all physical items and objects like furniture, art and accessories, placement of physical items and objects, and room colors and materials such as flooring, wall coverings and window coverings. This also includes all decorations.
Which leads to decorations that make something look nicer by adding or changing items like wallpaper, paint, etc. Décor is a much larger category into which decorations belong.
Is Grandma Moving In? Interior Designer
I
f you are concerned about an elderly relative who’s living alone or in a facility that doesn’t appear to be meeting their needs, bringing them home to live with you can be the best solution if you have enough space and resources.
Home accessibility and safety are often roadblocks when your house wasn’t built with multigenerational living in mind.
But they don’t have to be. The number of design professionals who specialize in modifying living accommodations for seniors’ needs is rapidly growing and they can eliminate safety hazards while keeping your home fun and functional for everyone in your household.
A qualified interior designer can improve your home’s layout in ways that benefit all who live there by improving the flow within and between rooms, designing storage space that everyone can reach and eliminating obstructions that can trip anyone up, literally or figuratively.
DESIGN FOR ALL
An interior designer who has experience modifying homes for “aging in place,” or eliminating
as many barriers as possible to seniors living in their homes well into old age, also will be able to modify your home as needed.
Designers will look for ways to reduce fall risks and make room for wheelchairs as well as promote healthy actions and longevity.
They do this by reconfiguring rooms, selecting furniture and bathroom fixtures and removing obstacles while encouraging engagement with the rest of the family and nature and staying mentally active.
It helps to find someone who embraces and uses principles of universal design, which
prioritizes making a physical space as accessible and appealing to as many people as possible. This can involve adding features like zero-step entries, light switches accessible to everyone including those in wheelchairs, lever-style doorknobs and faucets, multilevel kitchen countertops and front-loading washers and dryers.
What’s most important is finding an interior designer with the compassion to sit down with your elderly loved one and learn their needs and who has the talent to translate those elements into a remodeled home that is welcoming and functional for everyone.
Some Trends
Just because you’re able to redecorate your home with every new trend doesn’t mean you should.
Trying to keep up with every “color of the year” or latest designer’s lamp release creates a huge drain on your time and energy, not to mention fodder for the landfill. Nobody has a crystal ball, but here are a few current design choices that seem more likely to travel from trendyto-tired at warp speed and be difficult to back out of.
This doesn’t mean your décor should be frozen in time — you just need to be selective with the trends you embrace. It’s safe to say that oversaturated colors, busy patterns and prints and especially faux materials tend to have a shorter shelf life.
Whatever you do, go with the real thing when you’re choosing accents like wood, marble, granite or anything that has nature-made and synthetic options.
ALL-WHITE KITCHENS
Trendcasters have been insisting for years that white kitchens are timeless, but some are finally starting to agree they may be more trouble than they’re worth.
This supposedly calming space in reality is stressful to keep clean, with every spill and stain standing in sharp relief against the standards you and your mother ever tried to meet.
You can go mostly white while adding some contrast with lessspoilable marble or quartz counters and/or natural wood grain cabinets.
FARMHOUSE STYLE
We all knew it was going to end at some point, right? As dominant as it was for the past decade, it was easy to forget that shiplap collects dust, and the open shelving, gratuitous antiques and hanging pots would be a recipe for showing your mess off to the world.
The farmhouse aesthetic’s emphasis on comfort across rambling spaces will endure in future design iterations, but the overtly “farmy” elements are beginning to lose their appeal, even in nonurban areas where the clash with outside reality isn’t as stark.
PATTERNED BATHROOM TILE
Interior designers have been paying more attention in recent years to this often-overlooked part of the house as people seek more spa-like surroundings for their self-care. This has opened a world of alternatives to the unlamented fuzzy toilet lid cover and carpet.
These include bold uses of tile on walls and floors, sometimes in vivid patterns which, unfortunately, tend to wear out their welcome quickly and leave your space feeling boldly dated.
However, if you do love this look your best bet is to keep it to a minimum.
MAXIMALISM
A backlash to the domination of minimalism was inevitable and necessary, but it’s frightfully easy to overcorrect by adding too many photos, collectibles and keepsakes until your home resembles, at best, your grandparents’ house before it got cleaned out and at worst like a hoarder’s retreat.
Showing off all of your art and layering all of your textiles is a lot of fun, but true design is based on how you edit your rooms, so you’ll need to practice some restraint.
Reflect
YOUR STYLE WITH MIRRORS
Decorating with mirrors is a perfect way to enhance natural light and make a room appear larger and brighter.
For instance, placing one across from a window echoes the natural light and foliage, essentially bringing the outdoors in. But don’t just hang it anyplace.
To decorate with mirrors, treat them like a piece of art. Unlike a painting though, consider the mirror’s reflection. Position your mirror to reflect a beautiful view, marvelous architecture or brilliant natural light.
Here a few ideas if you’re looking to decorate with mirrors.
• Position is key. Especially in a small room where you want to increase natural light, place your mirror where the light naturally falls to make the room appear brighter and larger.
• Add mirrored tiles to a kitchen to brighten the space and add a glamorous touch. These can be on a wall or added to the backsplash to reflect more light and space. They will require extra cleaning, so be aware.
• Add mirrored furniture such as a sideboard in the dining
room, a mirrored headboard in the bedroom or a mirrored desk in an office. Just keep mirrored furniture to a minimum for a clean aesthetic.
• Choose mirrored accessories for a touch of elegance including a mirrored tray on your coffee table or ottoman or mirrored picture frames on a side table.
• Double check the mirror’s reflection and ensure it’s eye-catching. Nobody wants to see your clutter in the corner reflected in the mirror over the sofa or fireplace. Instead, strategically place mirrors to reflect your show-stopping chandelier or gallery of artwork.
• Consider a mirrored wall for high impact. Particularly with a small room, decorating on a large scale with a mirrored wall can make the room feel bigger and brighter. And no, mirrored walls are not outdated. If done right, they are modern and beautiful.
• With limited space, choose a large floor-standing mirror in a corner to maximize the impact and add light and perceived space.
Design Preferences
ARE CLUES TO PERSONALITY
When we decorate our homes we’re clearly trying to make them stylish and functional, but the top priority, whether we realize it or not, is to make ourselves comfortable.
Our choices reflect our personalities and the type of environment one prefers to be in. The design styles we gravitate to give certain hints about who we are to ourselves and others, and it’s fun to scan other people’s home interiors for tip-offs to whether their public and private selves match.
TRADITIONAL
Well-maintained straight-line sofas, high-backed chairs, walnut stains and some flourishes in carvings and molding all point to a household run by people who embrace time-tested values like hard work and loyalty and tend to steer clear of fads.
They may not be the ones you turn to for advice about the latest smartphones, but you can depend on them to honor their commitments and be there for you when you’re in a jam.
FARMHOUSE
These people have much in common with those who cherish traditional styles but favor furnishings that look like they’ve been around for a while, either because they have been or are made of reclaimed or distressed wood, shabby-chic upholstery and dried flowers and plants.
They also value time-tested ethics but tend to embrace a more casual look and feel to life, reflected in more relaxed shapes and ensuring all guests feel welcome and comfortable.
MIDCENTURY MODERN
If you’re all about clean lines, low profiles and carefully curated accessories, you’re probably already aware of your predilection for Space Age style. Despite preferring these throwback designs these are forward-thinking people, ready to
explore new frontiers and bring their most important lessons back home.
They are self-reliant with a creative and adventurous spirit and value both form and function, knowing they usually merge effortlessly.
BOHO
This aesthetic is less defined than most others but generally integrates a funky, global style with natural materials and textures like rattan and macrame.
Its followers’ lifestyle may be unconventional but their tastes definitely are, with eclecticism coming to them as naturally as breathing. They’re freespirited and embrace everything life has to offer while inviting everyone they can along for the ride.
INDUSTRIAL
Those who embrace this style crave high ceilings, open floorplans, exposed brick and ductwork, furniture made of the strongest metals and wood and statement pendant lights. They appreciate indestructible products and are willing and able to pay the price they command.
These people are practical, not flashy, but never fail to impress with their understated artistic flair and commitment to quality.
GLAM
This is about sleek, shimmering surfaces combined with sophisticated, super-plush furniture and rugs and dramatic lighting to create an ageless Hollywood look. Anyone who chooses this style is likely to be an entertainer on some level, especially by inviting their friends over for opulent parties large and small that spare no expense.
They value the finer things in life, and some of their happiest moments come from sharing them with those they love.

Your Art Gallery Wall
CAN BE ANYWHERE
by Valerie DemetrosIf you have a unique art collection, hanging a gallery wall is the perfect way to show it off.
A gallery wall is simply a curated display of framed art, photographs, prints and sculptures creatively arranged on a wall.
The first thing you need to do is determine how much space you have and where to create your gallery. Don’t overlook a bathroom wall, hallway, bedroom or even between bookcases.
The best part is choosing the art.
This reflects your home and personality, so be creative and experiment. Take your time, this doesn’t need to come together in a day. There are no steadfast rules. You can include portraits next to landscapes or a still life next to a wall sculpture.
Play around with frame shapes and textures mixing round, oval and square frames.
If you’re not sure where to start, you can also choose a specific theme.
Create a wall of travel mementos with photos, prints and souvenirs in a shadow box. If you are a beach enthusiast, use painting techniques to liven up the wall as well as photos of palm trees, vacation shots and beach landscapes.
Now that you have your art, it’s time to make sense of it.
Take time to sketch out how you want your gallery to look. Once you have a bit of an idea, place the items on the floor and begin moving them to find a grouping that works. Consider shapes, colors, textures and topics. Evenly space and don’t crowd your art. Try grouping similar items together and be sure and take a photo at this point.
There is one more step before hanging. Cut brown paper into the shapes of the art. Then take these and place them on the wall with painter’s tape. Feel free to move things around if it doesn’t work. If it helps, step back and look at it as one large piece of art rather than a collection.
Once you are positive of your gallery layout, it’s time to hang your art and enjoy.
Take Charge FOR THE FUTURE WITH
Luxury EVs
by Blake HerzogToday’s luxury electric vehicles are zooming to the forefront of the EV sector, loaded with power and features along with the leading-edge technology that will defuse combustion engine domination once and for all.
Here are some of the buzziest machines on the market today:
LUCID AIR GRAND TOURING
A Silicon Valley startup building the longest-range EVs on the market in the desert just south of Phoenix, Lucid has been scooping up awards, starting with the big one right out of the gate last November, MotorTrend Car of the Year.
The Air Grand Touring can get a jaw-dropping 516 miles per charge, getting you all the way to the coast with lively acceleration and intuitive handling of the engine and driver interface. This top-ofthe-line product starts at $154,000, with less and more expensive models coming hot on its wheels.
MERCEDES BENZ EQS
The flagship electric model from the world’s most prestigious automaker has wowed observers with its graceful handling and generously sized passenger cabin and trunk, making every journey a breeze whether it’s longdistance or around the block.
With a range of 350 miles per charge, you’ll be able to reach the luxe lights of Las Vegas and the opulent spas of Phoenix and Tucson without breaking a sweat. Prices for lower trim level start at $102,000, but for just $3,000 more you get massaging front seats!
TESLA MODEL S PLAID
Tesla has dominated the EV market by making reliable emission-free cars available for as little as $40,000, which may sacrifice some interior cushiness to deliver on topend performance and range. Now Elon and the crew are reaching for the top end with its Plaid series, which in the Model S has a tri-motor engine that can take you gliding down a country road or flying down a speedway faster than almost anything else. With a range of almost 400 miles per charge, prices start at about $140,000.
PORSCHE TAYCAN
Porsche has managed to make an EV that drives like a Porsche, and while its 212 mile-per-charge range doesn’t really compete with some of its competitors, the 2023 model is expected to get a boost. It’s near the top in both performance and
luxury, with a 16.8-inch curved infotainment screen and a lowslung style and design that keeps you close to and engaged with the motor, a rarity for electric vehicles.
Prices start at $86,000, with more dough buying you a little more range with higher trims.
RIVIAN R1S
This startup has staked its claim on “electric adventure vehicles,” rolling out its pickup trucks first before starting deliveries of its first SUV this year. Its exterior gives off subtly futuristic vibes and is built for outdoor exploration, offering up to seven seats for family escapades.
Adaptive air suspension is standard, four of its eight driving modes are for off-road use, and it can wade in up to 3 feet of water. It’s available with a standard battery with a 260-mile range or a large one that can reach 320 miles. Prices start at $78,000.
Accessories Perk Up YOUR WARDROBE
by Michelle Beck, Owner, Purple Clover BoutiqueGetting tired of wearing the same pieces from your closet? For a simple, less expensive fix, try changing your accessories instead.
Wardrobe essentials are essential for a reason — they are supposed to last for a long time. That is why they are called essentials and are worth investing in. Some of these most reliable staples are also some of the most basic: a great pair of jeans and a white T-shirt for example.
Consider changing things up with the help of a few key accessories.
ADD A SCARF
A silk scarf never goes out of style and can be used in many different ways. You can tie a scarf around your neck or around your wrist or put it through the strap of your handbag. A scarf can be used as a belt or simply tied at your waist over a dress.
Larger scarves can be worn over your shoulders, and depending on the season or climate, can take the place of a coat.
CONSIDER A STATEMENT NECKLACE
The entire look of your outfit can change depending on your choice of a necklace and earrings. A bold necklace with a single
large stone or a thick gold chain instantly transforms the basic white T-shirt or “Little Black Dress” into something special. Chokers are especially popular right now and can be found at many price points.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE
THE POWER OF A BELT!
Classic leather belts are available with many different types of buckles. Materials range from silver, gold, brass or aluminum — popular now is the embroidered belt. The colors, details and craftsmanship can make this type of belt a true showstopper!
CHANGE YOUR HANDBAG
All of us have our favorite handbag and use it again and again, but consider a different style for a completely different look!
The “belt bag” is making a comeback. Once known as the fanny pack, this hands-free style is back and is actually very fashionable.
Made out of leather or highquality faux leather, this bag can be worn around your waist and is extremely practical. A crossbody style also is friendly to your shoulders and sometimes comes with a detachable strap. Now you have a handle bag and a cross-body style all in one!
A house becomes a home when you add one set of four legs, a happy tail, and that indescribable measure of love that we call...a dog.
Burgundy,
A GIFT FOR THE 5 SENSES
by Tori Ward, Cruise and Resort Specialist, ROX TravelIhesitated when my husband suggested a food and wine canal trip through Burgundy. Then he added cheese.
He should have led with that.
We were a bit apprehensive because we certainly are not wine experts. However, we boarded a train in Paris with plenty of enthusiasm and, in less than 2 hours, were stepping aboard our four-suite hotel barge the Savoir Vivre.
Our captain and host Ricard welcomed us with flutes of icy Champagne and warm gougère, fabulous French cheese puffs. Second mate Axelle escorted us to our comfortable rooms equipped with adjustable beds and surprisingly large bathrooms.
We learned that our fellow passengers also were hoping to increase their knowledge of wine and none were experts.
Although there are other hotel barges, we chose this one because it was the only one offering a dine-around option. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch on board each day, however, our nightly meals included pre-selected and vetted restaurants with abundant wines served as part of the cruise package.
They ranged from elegant white linen service in restaurants built on the foundations of 11-century abbeys to more relaxed timbered ceiled bistros. One night our table was in the valley below the imposing castle of Chateauneuf en Auxois with its ghostly lights beckoning us to explore its ancient interiors.
Our limited knowledge of wine was never an obstacle as during each lunch and dinner we shared our observations and descriptions ranging from, “Smells of aged leather like the upholstery of a 1960 Cadillac,” to “As fruit forward as my grandma’s Jello mold with fresh strawberrie s.”
And although we had a morning of rain showers, by lunch our wine was, “As dry as the New Mexican desert during an episode of Breaking Bad.”
What we did take seriously were the beautiful fields full of golden buttercups, swaying lavender and the ivory-colored Charolais cattle snoozing in tall grass lining both sides of the canal. Our route started in Escommes and followed the canal to our final mooring just outside Dijon.
The mornings were spent strolling or biking along the tow paths lining the canal. The multiple locks that make the canal navigable provide an opportunity to quickly step off and on the boat with ease. Most of the lockgates are opened by hand crank and the lock keepers travel from one lock to the next mostly by motorcycle.
Our afternoons were spent touring the various cultural or agricultural locations along our route. After our tour of Hótel-Dieu, a hospital dating to 1443, we strolled around the charming city of Beaune. On the way back to the boat, our tour guide stopped for a loaf of fresh bread dispensed at a roadside vending machine. Right beside it was one dispensing cheese.
Toward the end of the week we arrived in the Cote-d´Or wine region where we visited the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot where Cistercian monks began producing wine in the 12th century.
If you would like more information about this trip and how to book an adventure of your own, ROX Travel is open for business at tori@roxtravel.com.
3TipsHOLIDAYS FOR SELLING YOUR HOME DURING THE
by Gwen Holloway and Elena Sanwick, REALTORS®, LUXE Real Estate Group – Luxury PrescottIhinking about selling your home during the holidays, or is it just too much?
Conducting showings during the last months of the year presents some unique and additional challenges that can bring extra stress to an already busy time. Leveraged correctly, though, the holidays can help you sell your home more quickly.
Here are three home-selling tips that take advantage of the most wonderful time of the year:
DÉCOR
From Thanksgiving through New Year’s, the holidays are about family, friends, food and festive décor. Take advantage of this season and bring some additional cheer into your home to make it welcoming, warm, and cozy — the kind of place that buyers can envision gathering with their own loved ones.
However, if you tend to go a bit overboard on the holiday décor, keep in mind that this year, less is more. The buyers need to be able to see the house, not just your beautiful decorations. (Note: If possible, have the professional listing photos of your home taken before your decorations go up so the listing doesn’t appear dated in January.)
OPEN HOUSES
Depending on the holidays observed in your household, there are obviously nonnegotiable days that will be blocked off for showings. Keep in mind, though, that potential buyers often are in town visiting friends or family during the holidays.
Festive luxury home open house events on the Saturday after Thanksgiving or in the afternoon on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve are very popular, and often result in attendees full of holiday cheer — feeling the draw of friends and family — and considering a new home.
Yes, it’s the holidays, but be as flexible with showings as
possible, because doing so may very well result in the best gift of all: an accepted offer!
SMELLS OF THE SEASON
What do the aromas of pumpkin pie, gingerbread and sugar cookies have in common? For many, they are reminiscent of happy times, family and home. Don’t underestimate the power of freshly baked cookies and hot cocoa for your potential buyer guests — at the very least, they’ll appreciate the warm hospitality.
And, at the most? They will associate the sweet smells in your home with the comfort of favorite homes in their past and want to make it their own.
EssentialsStock YOUR HOME BAR WITH
Creating a home bar is a must if you enjoy entertaining. Aside from adding your own style with artwork and a distinctive bar, there are a few essentials you can’t overlook.
You’ll be glad you have these basics on hand when the fun begins.
GLASSWARE
Invest in the right glassware for your guests — whiskey glasses, stemless wine glasses, champagne flutes, highball and more. This not only allows you to be more creative but demonstrates that you know what you’re doing.
WHISKEY STONES
If you’re pouring whiskey, cool it down without watering it with cold stones. Some prefer a bit of ice or water, but these stones will ensure it stays cool no matter what you add.
TOOLS
Make sure you have the right tools to make the job easy including shaker tins, strainer, bar spoon, jigger for measuring and a muddler. Additional tools include citrus peeler and a paring knife for garnishes.
SIMPLE SYRUP
This easily mixes sweetness into a cocktail. You can buy it or make it by heating equal parts water and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
Cool and pour into an airtight bottle. You can use white or brown sugar and infuse it with vanilla, mint and more for additional flair.
MIXERS
You’ll want club soda, tonic, ginger ale, soft drinks and ginger beer for simple highballs and mixed drinks like gin and tonics and Moscow mules.
GARNISHES
Olives and cherries, as well as orange, lemon and lime for the peels and juice fit the bill. For a larger selection, add mint, stuffed olives and more exotic fruits.
BITTERS
Bitters balance out the cocktail essences and bring out the different flavor profiles. There are several types including orange, Peychaud and basic angostura bitters.
BASIC LIQUOR
Make sure you have rum, rye, bourbon, vermouth, flavored liqueurs, vodka and gin. Include wine, beer and sparkling wine for those who don’t want a mixed drink.
Curl Up
Winter is a fabulous excuse for selfindulgence. We’re cold, we’re tired from work and family obligations, and we’re either preparing for or decompressing from the holiday frenzy.
At least a few evenings should be set aside for relaxed revelry with festive drinks made from the highest quality ingredients.
In case you haven’t mixed any winter drinks for a while, we have some suggestions:
MEXICAN HOT CHOCOLATE (SERVES 1)
• 2 oz Partida Añejo tequila
• 6 oz hot chocolate
• .5 bar spoon ancho chili powder
• Pinch of ground cinnamon
Add ancho chili and a pinch of ground cinnamon to hot chocolate mix and stir until they are mixed in. Pre-heat a hot toddy glass or mug with hot water. Pour out the hot water. Add spiced hot chocolate to heated glass, add the 2 ounces of Partida Añejo and stir. Garnish with cinnamon stick.
WINTER MARGARITA (SERVES 1)
• 1 oz reposado (slightly aged) tequila
• 1 oz mezcal (like Del Maguey Vida)
• 1 oz lime juice
• .75 oz simple syrup
• 1 egg white
Shake ingredients without ice, then shake again with ice. Strain into a coupe glass and serve up with a salted rim.
APPLE CINNAMON HOT TODDY (SERVES 2)
• 2/3 cup superfine (bar) sugar
• 2/3 cup apple juice
• 4 cinnamon quills
• 2/3 cup apple pie liqueur
• whipped cream, to serve
• ground cinnamon, to dust
Place sugar in a medium heavybased saucepan over high heat with 1 tablespoon of water. Cook, swirling pan, for 5-6 minutes or until golden and caramel. Using a metal spoon (and being careful of the steam), stir in 2 cups water and swirl pan until caramel and water are combined. Stir in apple juice and cinnamon quills, then stir in the liqueur. Divide among glasses, spoon over whipped cream and dust with cinnamon to serve.
YULE MULE (SERVES 2)
• 4 oz vodka
• fresh-squeezed juice of 1 lime (about 1.5 ounces)
• 4 oz unsweetened cranberry juice
• 6 oz ginger beer
• 4-6 cranberries, for garnish
• rosemary sprig, for garnish
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake together the vodka, lime juice and cranberry juice. Fill two copper mule mugs or old-fashioned glasses with ice. Strain half of the cocktail into each glass. Top each glass with ginger beer.
Must-Have Heels FOR YOUR SHOE COLLECTION
Marilyn Monroe was spot-on when she said, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.”
Nothing defines an outfit better than shoes. Whether it’s a little black dress, leggings or jeans, your shoes will define the mood. But the only way to achieve that is to own the perfect shoe collection to begin with.
Here are just a few to complete your collection.
STILETTO
Sky-high with leg-lengthening qualities, these heels make a striking statement. Whether you choose a lace-up silhouette or a red-bottom Christian Louboutin, you can’t go wrong.
KITTEN
These are perfectly walkable and a great on-the-go choice.
They add a feminine touch to jeans and a T-shirt and softness to a power suit.
BLOCK
Another staple offering comfort, designers are providing fresh versions this season. Try Gucci’s stacked heel with horse-bit hardware for a modern classic.
SLINGBACKS
Both timeless and sophisticated, slingbacks immediately elevate your look. When adding to your collection, start with a neutral like tan or blush for a classic choice.
MULES
Mules are a slip-on, warm-weather, must-have with their open backs. Even better, choose from closedtoe, strappy and extravagant shapes to upgrade your collection.
PLATFORMS
They look intimidating, but platforms are comfortable and supportive.
A bold statement choice, pair with a midi dress or long jeans for a touch of drama. Update with a pair of ruffled socks.
PUMPS
Nothing beats a classic pump. Start with a Louboutin in nude or black, then add eyecatching reds and metallics.
WEDGES
Superbly comfortable, the wedge will stand-out. A chunky wedge lets you add a few inches without sacrificing comfort. Choose a new, modern style or stick with an espadrille for a classic look.
HEELED BOOTS
Tall, calf-hugging silhouettes pair well with a mini skirt or over jeans or leggings. Choose roomier western styles for a smart touch with dresses.
Know & Organize
Spices
by Valerie DemetrosFOR GOOD HEALTH & SATISFIED TASTE BUDS
Spices are a staple in every kitchen. Even the best recipes need a little extra, and you can usually find that in your spice cabinet. Better yet, many of them offer substantial health benefits.
But before you start cooking, let’s go over the basics.
BUYING
You can simply pick up what you need in the supermarket. But to get the most out of your spices, you will want to buy whole spices and grind them yourself. Pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg can be ground in a grinder or with a microplane.
Buy spices where you know they’re fresh, like Penzey’s, Whole Foods or other retailers you trust. Buy in bulk if you use a spice frequently, like kosher salt or peppercorns and know when to buy just a little. If you just need a pinch, don’t go overboard. It will end up just sitting in the back of the cabinet.
Also, consider growing your own basil, cilantro, parsley and oregano for starters.
STORING
Light, heat, air and humidity will shorten the life of your spices. The better the storage system, the longer shelf-life. Store in a cool, dark place and keep moisture away, don’t use wet utensils and avoid shaking over a steaming pot. Avoid light and heat.
The best containers are glass, and you get extra points if they are dark to keep out the light. Make sure you have well-fitting lids.
You can also freeze spices, just make sure they are sealed tightly. Be sure you track the date. You’d be surprised how long they stick around before you check.
COOKING
When cooking, break down the spices in the best way for your dish. Generally, add heat to most to get the molecules dancing and release flavors and aromas.
Break them down even more by grinding, crushing or chopping to release flavors. And finally, add fats when appropriate like oil, butter, ghee or animal fat to release even more flavor.
Sedona‘s TLAQUEPAQUE
Aby Riverann Polinard, Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Villagerriving in Sedona is like walking into a beautiful postcard. In the center of town is Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village. This artistic village reflects the romance of Sedona. Here, art and nature embrace one another in a story of beauty and perfection.
Abe Miller, its founder, fashioned the architecture after small villages he visited in Mexico. Struck by the natural beauty of those thriving artistic communities, he named it Tlaquepaque. Which means the “best of everything.”
The design elements show in the details. Arched entryways and cobblestone streets echo a feeling of Old World charm. Hand-painted murals, courtyard fountains and colorful gardens nestled among giant sycamores provide an inspiring casual elegance. Visitors encounter life-size and monument wildlife sculptures along the south entrance galleries and tall wind sculptures on the north. A collection of realistic bronzes like Amelia Earhart, an Indian Maiden, Ganesh, or a whimsical abstract — add a dazzling charm to the ambiance.
Everything on site is eye candy.
Tlaquepaque showcases fine art across all genres featuring local, national and international renowned artists. Explore its sacred art, authentic Native
American, contemporary, eclectic and impressionist works throughout 15 fine art galleries.
With 30 small specialty shops featuring distinctive gifts, Tlaquepaque keeps it original. There’s folk art, a kid’s boutique and Toy Town, kitchen inspirations, jewelry shops, natural wonders, outdoor gear, raku pottery and much more. This immaculate and dog-friendly venue even has a shop for your four-legged friend.
Listen to the bell tower chime. Turn a corner and hear the soothing melodies of a flamenco guitar or native flute. Or visit the small nondenominational chapel for quiet meditation in the midst of Tlaquepaque’s liveliness.
Five on-site restaurants provide a variety of dining experiences
offering exceptional cuisines. Four smaller eateries specialize in sweet treats, chai, coffee and spirits.
An extensive schedule of community events from flamenco music, productions by Red Earth Theatre, educational events for children and a Farmers Market from May to October add an air of celebration.
Tlaquepaque also produces extraordinary special events. Enjoy the Howl-o-ween Costume Parade of Pets, Cinco de Mayo, Day of the Dead and the Christmas Festival of Lights. These fabulous productions are captivating to locals and patrons alike.
The treasures you’ll find here may be some of the most memorable in Sedona!
Worries Away Brush YOUR SKIN CARE
Most of your skin care regime is laserfocused on your face, which makes sense because that’s the part of you that you present to the world every day, and it’s where your most sensitive skin is.
Devoting that much time to the rest of your skin’s surface isn’t possible in our fast-paced modern life, but dry brushing is one very simple, natural thing you can do weekly, or
more frequently, to keep the rest of your skin glowing and baby soft.
The bristles found on most dry brushes will cause irritation when used on the face but effectively exfoliate the rest of your body, sloughing off dirt and dead skin cells to expose your true young, vibrant epidermis underneath (there are some dry brushes on the market made especially for the face).
Some practitioners suggest putting a bit of body oil on the brush before starting, but most people use a completely dry brush on clean, dry skin for more effective exfoliation, following it up by showering and then moisturizing.
Dry brushing is not recommended for those with especially sensitive skin or conditions like eczema, psoriasis, sunburn or open sores or skin wounds.
HOW IT’S DONE
Find the right brush — Dry brushes are generally made from a wooden paddle and naturally sourced bristles made of such materials as cactus needles, sisal, animal hair or even copper, which apply different levels of pressure and allow you to choose the level of intensity your skin can handle.
Some fit in your hand while others have handles to make it easier to reach your back, feet and other more difficultto-access body parts. Some handles are wrapped in cotton, sisal, rubber or other materials to make them easier to grip.
Work your way up from the bottom — This means the soles of your feet, where the brushing sensation can feel especially powerful. Do one leg at a time, brushing upward on the front and back before proceeding to your derriere. Move the brush around your belly in a clockwise motion, then from your back upward toward your front.
Always move the brush toward your heart — This aids blood circulation, refreshing your skin while also sending lymphatic
fluid throughout your body for faster removal of toxins and pathogens. Better circulation helps to plump the skin and can temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite on the skin’s surface.
Don’t overdo it — Some people dry brush as often as daily, but many experts believe once or twice a week is the most beneficial frequency.
Use slightly firm pressure at the most. The bristles will be doing most of the work, and you don’t want to create counterproductive irritation. Your skin will be slightly reddened after you brush, but that should dissipate quickly so watch for any longer-lasting inflammation that could indicate skin damage.
Enjoy! — Beyond its skin care benefits, dry brushing can be incredibly relaxing as a meditative self-care ritual. The sensations it causes can be an exhilarating wake-up call that’s perfect for starting off your day.

Japanese Head Spa
TAKE YOU OUT OF YOUR HEAD
by Blake HerzogJapanese head spa treatments started infiltrating the U.S. a few years ago by mixing the art of high touch with high tech, overrunning TikTok with vignettes using phrases like “heaven in a chair” and autonomous sensory meridian response, sometimes referred to as ASMR, soundtracks.
Available in both dedicated “J-Beauty” centers and as a service in salons and spas, these treatments are described as a “facial for your scalp,” extending the pampering beyond your forehead in the name of keeping the top of your head happy and the hair it grows gorgeous.
They can alleviate both dry and oily scalps and promote hair growth by unclogging follicles taken out of service by sticky sebum, dirt and other occlusives.
Most scalp treatments start out with what can be a rude awakening as a trained practitioner uses an electronic wand to show you all the gunk that has collected on it over time, at 200x scale.
But then you’re rewarded with a soothing steam bath delivered through a shower cap-like bonnet over a customized sink, followed by an extended shampoo and scalp massage that can send you to previously unknown heights of delighted relaxation.
Your provider gently kneads and exfoliates your scalp, reinvigorating your spirit and rejuvenating your skin. Excess dirt and skin cells are removed, unclogging follicles and promoting hair growth, while increased blood flow nourishes your follicles from within.
This massage is usually followed with a suction-based deep cleanse, customized to your scalp’s needs, to remove any remaining residue, and often a hair mask. Most spas will offer you a blowout, as your hair will obviously be wet afterward.
Then you get to see your scalp close-up once again while it’s still tingling from all the pampering. Most appointments last 30 to 60 minutes, though some for as long as 90 minutes.
TREAT YOURSELF
As wonderful and luxurious as Japanese head spas are, there still aren’t too many of them beyond the coastal cities, with a Google search revealing only a couple of locations in the Phoenix area offering these services.
That doesn’t mean you must wait until your next vacation to experience their benefits, as you can recreate much of the process at home as a gratifying self-care ritual.
You can buy hand-held scalp massagers along with the cage-like old-school versions, but all you really need is your fingers and a gentle shampoo that won’t cause irritation as you massage it in.
Many scalp scrubs are too harsh or abrasive to be used during this process, though some with gentle, all-natural ingredients can bring benefits if you apply them before shampooing.
The massage is the main attraction, and it’s delightfully easy to adjust it to your preferences when you’re the one doing it. Do remember that applying too much pressure can tangle or break hair, disturb resting follicles and even cause headaches.
Pay particular attention to your hairline, behind your ears and the nape of your neck to maximize blood flow.

At this point, you can consult your provider, and they will examine every area of concern and explain in detail why you are or are not the best candidate for PDO threads.
Overall, good luck with your journey on your PDO thread lifts, and may you get the best skin that you deserve.

CBD
CAN TAKE YOUR FACIAL TO THE Next Level
You’ve probably heard cannabidiol (CBD) is the cure-all for everything these days. It’s in just about anything from food to supplements, shampoo and skin care.
In case you don’t know, CBD is an active ingredient derived from the cannabis plant. It’s a chemical compound extracted from hemp and marijuana. CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the most popular cannabinoids; CBD does not give you a “high” like THC.
If you’re looking to take your next facial to a new level, add CBD. The oil, added to moisturizer, masks and massage oil, has been found to positively affect the skin.
For acne, CBD is an anti-inflammatory and reduces redness and soothes the skin. It is also an antibacterial and antifungal, which helps combat the causes of acne. If you tend to have red skin, rosacea or eczema, CBD oil can help calm the redness and relieve dryness.
For aging skin, CBD helps with the production of collagen and moisturizes. Its antioxidants help to reverse the signs of aging including wrinkles, sagging skin and dullness. It can also help improve the blood circulation, giving the skin a more natural glow.
You can find professionals using CBD products now.
If you’re in the market to pamper yourself, you can easily give yourself a CBD facial at home. In a small bowl, mix together one tablespoon of coffee grounds with one teaspoon of raw honey and two to three drops of CBD oil. Use this as an exfoliator to prep your skin by rubbing in a circular motion for a minute or two and then rinse.
Next use a CBD mask and relax as the mask does the work. Next use a serum with CBD oil and massage your skin gently and use a facial roller if you have one. An Oxford study in 2018 found that people who added a five-minute facial massage daily improved circulation and the appearance of wrinkles.
Finish with a CBD-infused moisturizer to lock in hydration.
Whether it’s by a professional or at home, a CBD facial can be a positive addition to your self-care.
Adaptogenic Drinks
TO FIGHT STRESS & FATIGUE
A
daptogens are herbs and other botanicals that humans have used for millennia to relieve one or more symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression as well as to boost the immune system.
Bottled and powdered adaptogenic drinks sold under brand names like Recess, Clevr, Zolt, Moment and Free Rain have been steadily increasing in popularity, and some are even being marketed as alternatives to alcohol (while others actually contain it).
Adaptogens are defined as natural substances that can reduce stress response to several kinds of triggers (i.e. physical, biological, environmental and psychological) and are generally nontoxic when consumed in normal quantities.
This definition was developed by a Russian scientist in the 1940s, but many of these herbal remedies long have been embraced by practitioners of ayurvedic medicine and Chinese traditional medicine.
Studies conducted on animals and humans have found evidence to support many traditional uses of adaptogens, but more research is needed to establish clear scientific links. In most cases, consuming these nature-made ingredients won’t harm you, and enjoying drinks containing them may help you relax and enjoy yourself, much like a cocktail does.
The list of possible adaptogens, socalled because they help our bodies adapt to the effects of stress, is long, but they can all benefit us in similar ways by taming our response to stress and anxiety, alleviating low moods, revving up energy and accelerating our immune response.
The ways these herbs affect our bodies vary:
Stress reduction — Many adaptogens help regulate cortisol, aka the “stress hormone,” reducing its ability to trigger anxiety, depression, metabolism dysfunction and even heart disease.
Mood improvement — Similarly, adaptogens can regulate other neurotransmitters that influence emotions including serotonin and dopamine. This can improve overall well-being as well as tamp down anxiety and depression.
Immunity boost — Adaptogens can trigger production of white blood cells and other crucial components of the immune system that defend you against viruses, bacteria and tumors.
Energy enhancement — Many adaptogens can improve cellular energy production by aiding the synthesis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), an organic molecule that delivers energy to wherever it’s needed in the body. On the macro level it increases stamina, performance and concentration.
These drinks also frequently include more health-boosting ingredients including magnesium and other minerals, probiotics and compounds like L-tryptophan.
Many incorporate nootropics, which are synthetic or natural substances believed to enhance mental or physical performance. This is a very broad category that includes caffeine, CDPcholine, creatine and L-theanine, so be aware of any that might be counterproductive, such as boosting your energy when you’re trying to relax or sleep.
NOTE OF CAUTION
Some adaptogens can have negative interactions with certain medications and chronic health conditions or during pregnancy, so ask your doctor whether they’re right for you if you have any concerns.
A
Heals In Multiple Ways
ndonesia has embraced jamu for some 1,000 years as both an herbal beverage and a state of mind.
Jamu, I
Appropriately named after the islands, jamu (also called jamu juice) does not have a standard recipe so it can be adapted to whatever ingredients are available, built around turmeric and ginger, two spices renowned throughout Asia for their healing properties.
It’s an elixir some people compare with the status of chicken soup in the U.S., and many imbibe it daily as a preventive measure and the essence of a calming moment taken to care for themselves.
Since 2020, the rest of the world has been waking up to the power of jamu as it searches for healing wherever it can find it, and the drink can have numerous health benefits depending on its ingredients: Turmeric and ginger both contain powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, while ginger has been used for generations to combat nausea, especially when related to morning sickness and is believed to have antiviral properties.
A SIMPLE RECIPE
Jamu is increasingly being bottled for export as it’s become better-known and more commercialized, but it’s irresistibly easy to make at home because the most common recipes have just a handful of ingredients. It’s traditionally served chilled but can also be consumed warm.
• 1 cup fresh turmeric, cleaned and chopped
• 1/2 cup fresh ginger, cleaned and chopped
• 4 cups water or coconut water
• 1/2 cup honey
• 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lime juice, from 2-3 limes
• Pinch of black pepper (optional, but will increase turmeric absorption)
1.Add turmeric, ginger and water to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into a medium saucepan set over medium high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat so the mixture simmers for about 15 minutes.
2.Add lime juice and honey.
3.Remove saucepan from heat and add the honey and lime juice. Stir to combine.
4.Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve. Then pour the strained mixture into a glass bottle or jar and refrigerate until chilled. Makes 4 servings.

IT’S MORE THAN JUST A FOOT RUB
Just about everyone loves a good foot rub. It can make a long, rough day seem to fade away.
Reflexology is the ultimate foot rub that can treat illness and pain by applying pressure to certain points on your foot. It is based on the principle that there are areas on the feet, hands and ears connected through the nervous system to corresponding parts of the body.
When pressure is applied to these areas, it stimulates energy along the nerve channels and helps to restore balance in the body.
Each of the 7,000 nerve endings in the human foot is a reflex point that corresponds to a body part. Reflexologists use special finger and thumb manipulations to stimulate these reflex points and know exactly what area of the foot corresponds to which body part.
The idea is that all the body’s organs, glands and joints are reflected in the feet and applying pressure to these points stimulates the body’s natural healing processes.
Reflexology can help with arthritis, migraines, PMS, fertility issues and even ease the stress of chemotherapy. One study found that ovary and uterus reflexes can be helped by manipulating the sides of the heel and can correct the imbalances that can hamper pregnancy.
Research at the University of Portsmouth found reflexology to
be as effective as painkillers for osteoarthritis. Subjects felt about 40% less pain and could stand for longer than those not receiving treatment.
PMS symptoms can be alleviated by massaging certain points on your big toe and ankle to calm your endocrine and reproductive system.
Reflexology is not a painful process because only medium pressure is needed to get the full effects. Most reflexologists use their thumb to assess for signs of imbalance. They then manipulate the foot to free up energy, release toxins and ease pain.
Some people see the effects after just one treatment.
Reflexology can bring high levels of relaxation to your system and induce a state of calm throughout your body and mind. For this reason, it is also used to cure such sleep disorders as insomnia.
The most recognized benefit of reflexology is improved blood circulation throughout the body. This means more oxygen reaching the vital organ systems and increasing metabolism. More oxygen through the body also means faster healing and re-growth of damaged cells.
Sessions usually last 30 or 60 minutes. You may fall asleep or feel a rush of emotions as energy moves through your body. Afterward, you may feel energized or have a sense of calm. Everyone is different.

Man Cave
DEPENDS ON THESE
Survival NECESSITIES
by Blake HerzogAman cave has long been defined as a refuge for husbands, boyfriends, dads, grandpas and other males who find themselves sharing their living quarters with fellow humans who may not share all of their tastes in entertainment, games, décor and hobbies.
This room is generally dedicated to one man and his preferences, who
may or may not choose to invite others inside from time to time.
One requirement most men have for their caves is self-sufficiency — they don’t want to leave their sanctuary before they must. A well-rounded floor plan is the key to making this possible.
Here are the basics for assembling your very own luxurious man cave:
Supersized seating — Men are most often bigger than their partners, and they like to flop down on furniture. Find a long, sturdy leather or plush sofa, preferably a sectional, and include a deluxe recliner with massage capabilities so you have at least two routes to ultimate relaxation.
Don’t skimp on the features — cup holders, built-in speakers, USB outlets, built-in pockets and reading lights!
Big screen — Whether it’s used to watch movies or sports and/ or gaming, this is likely to be a focal point in the room, so get the largest TV or monitor you have space for with the highest resolution you can afford, or plan for multiples if you tend to multitask with your entertainment.
Remember that this will make you the envy of everyone in your household and your friends, so be kind and share it … at least occasionally.
IRL games — You’ll want to step away from that screen every
once in a while so make sure you incorporate some handson pastimes into your cavern, whether it’s a dartboard, basketball hoop or another wall-mounted playspace or a card or billiards table.
Many multipurpose tables are on the market today to let you play anything from poker to foosball. It’s also the perfect place to showcase and play on a collection of vintage pinball machines or arcade games.
Libations center — This can take whatever size and shape works for you, whether it’s a beer cooler, liquor cabinet, standard-sized fridge or a full bar, but you’re going to want something to store your drinks and whatever food you can cram in next to them.
The number of guests you intend to invite into your cave will determine how much floorspace you should devote to this, so plan accordingly.
Lighting under control —
While the “cave” motif evokes
darkness, and many men prefer to keep it that way for TV-watching and gaming, it’s truly not a requirement.
Track lighting controlled by a smartphone app makes setting the mood a breeze, and windows and a sliding door into the backyard would be a dream for many an outdoorsman.
Man’s best friend’s cave — Don’t forget about your loyal pet’s comfort! If you have a fourlegged buddy who wants to be wherever you are, spoil them with their own dedicated den!

Adds Value Using Curb Appeal
by Gary Nelson, Realty Executives of FlagstaffOne of the easiest ways to add value to any Northern Arizona home is to enhance its curb or street appeal.
This can include changes as easy as owner improvements but can also include renovations and major landscaping projects, as well.
Homeowners might want to keep in mind that these renovations can be accomplished to help offset water use and to enhance a home’s integration in the native environment. From low-water use and naturalized landscaping to a more traditional and lusher look, these improvements can add great value not only to a home’s aesthetics but also its market value.
The National Association of Homebuilders provides a quarterly remodeling index that indicates the strength of the remodeling industry. This shows a steady rise in remodeling projects throughout the western United States since the first quarter of 2020, capping in the first quarter of 2022.
It also shows that not only are homeowners remodeling their homes but giving their homes a street view “facelift,” too.
But not all renovations and landscaping projects need to be expensive.
Here are a few simple and low-cost ways in which greater curb appeal can be achieved simply — but with big impact: Touch up the paint or stain while concentrating on windows and trim color. A Mountain Rustic look is very popular throughout Northern Arizona. With more traditional home styles, use three paint colors to provide extra contrast. Consider adding sustainable and longlived siding and trim materials.
Enhance front landscaping with low maintenance in
mind. Add splashes of color by using pots and small, raised flower and vegetable beds. Concentrate on Arizona native plant species for low-water use and easy maintenance. In recent studies, curb appeal has been known to add up to 10% to the value of a home. Ninety-four percent of Realtors polled in Arizona stated that homes with appealing front landscaping not only have a shorter time on the market but also sell for a higher price.

Indoor Plant Trends, Bringing the Outdoors In
There is nothing more satisfying than creating an oasis at home where people feel welcome and you are at peace and comfortable.
For many, this includes bringing the outdoors in with plants and flowers. And especially during the pandemic when everyone spent more and more time at home, creating that space took on a new meaning.
If you’re switching up the plants at home and want to try something new and interesting, let’s look at what’s trending right now.
SEEK COLOR
Although low-maintenance plants are always appealing, consider begonias and geraniums, which thrive inside.
For a treat, find a Polka Dot begonia (Begonia Maculata). Native to Brazil, it grows on a cane-like stem with emerald green leaves covered in silver dots. The leaf back is red and flowers with groups of white blooms.
Although it thrives with humidity, with just a bit of extra TLC you can keep it looking beautiful..
THINK TROPICS
Tropical plants, such as Monstera have long been a staple for statement-making interiors.
Due to their low maintenance and ornamental qualities, they make a great indoor plant.
Thriving in most indoor environments because they tolerate low light, they grow even faster and bigger in bright indirect sunlight.
CREATE A LOOK
Group your potted plants in sets of two or three in varying heights for a sculptural look.
For a minimalist look, opt for greenery, mixing varieties of one plant such as eucalyptus.
If you want to make a statement, choose an accent color in the room and pick flowers to match like roses or peonies in the same color.
HAVE SOME FUN
For a bit of whimsy, go unconventional. The Sweetheart plant (Hoya Kerrii) is a heartshaped vining succulent. It is low-maintenance and likes to dry out completely between waterings. Although tricky to find, look at boutique plant shops or Etsy.
Window Treatments
FOR EVERY ROOM
by Tom Binkley, Owner, Prescott Window CoveringsWhen selecting window coverings for your house you must keep two aspects in mind: a room’s natural lighting and intended use.
Spending just a little bit of time assessing this will ensure your home has the level of comfort and style you deserve.
A window’s orientation will affect the intensity of the sunlight coming through it. Your northfacing windows rarely will get the brunt of the intense Arizona sun, but any others will need shading at some point during the day — east windows from sunrise to mid-morning, south windows from late morning to midafternoon and western ones from midafternoon to sunset.
Think about who will be in the room, what they’re likely to be
doing and how much protection they’ll need from heat and glare.
LIVING ROOM
Your living room likely will have the largest windows in your home so shading the room from excess sun and heat will be especially important.
Vertical blinds and shutters can easily be adjusted for different light levels and privacy needs, while drapes piling generously onto the floor are the epitome of luxury and can be layered with lighter-weight treatments to set any mood.
BEDROOM
This is where you’ll want to keep all types of disturbances to a minimum, so lined drapes or curtains with blackout and noise-control properties are usually your best bet here.
If those aren’t what you want or simply not practical, Roman shades can be ordered in textures from flimsy to bulletproof to provide the protection you need and can be easily opened and closed with a dramatic sweep of your arm.
KITCHEN
You’ll want to maximize natural lighting here while also choosing coverings that won’t be ruined by heat or humidity.
Faux wood blinds and shutters are elegant choices that will withstand these adverse conditions, while sheer shades put an enticing filter on sunlight that makes it that much easier to walk in and get to work.
Cellular shades have a similar effect with far superior insulation ability for energy conservation.
Revamp your Bathroom
Kitchen renovations get all the glory, but what about the room devoted to personal care?
The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends spending between 5% and 10% of your home’s value on a bathroom remodel. If you’re not up to the mess or cost, there are ways to get around that and still create a fresh makeover.
LIGHTING
Swapping out lighting is easy and doesn’t require renovation. Hang a chandelier over that freestanding bathtub or add a modern light fixture for high impact.
Natural light is your best friend in the bathroom, but you need diffused and flattering light for makeup. Make sure you’ve added dimmers, you’d be surprised what a difference they make.
HEATED TOWELS
A heated towel rack can make you feel as if you stepped into a luxury hotel bathroom. You may need an electrician to wire it, but in less than a day you’ll have luxuriously warm towels within reach.
WINDOW TREATMENTS
Switch out tired window treatments for a quick and powerful change. Add shutters in natural wood or painted, depending on your décor. Think about natural wood blinds or cellular shades in a pop of color for a modern look.
FURNITURE
If you have the space, think about adding a bit of seating. Even a small chair or bench can make a world of difference. Choose one that fits the room as well as a color that snaps.
WALLS
Go for minimal white walls or choose a new color to brighten up the room. Paint one accent wall a different color for a change.
To liven up the room even more, consider wallpaper. Whether you want drama, whimsy or a tailored look, there’s an endless number of choices. It’s an easy project with a bold impact.
ACCESSORIES
Investing in new towels can make a world of difference.
Cozy, plush towels make a bathroom feel like a luxurious European hotel and look fabulous folded on a bench or rolled in a large basket.
Swap out plastic or acrylic shower rings for polished metal for a high-end look. And don’t forget to upgrade the shower curtain. Add a new soap dish and a plush rug.
For a clean and elegant look, decant your shampoo, conditioner and shower gel into stylish bottles and line them up. Store cotton balls, Q-tips, bath salts and even mouthwash in pretty glass jars and bottles.
ARTWORK, PLANTS
The bathroom tends to be the last place considered for artwork, but it can add personality and change the mood.
Hang artwork above your bathtub or sink or a large, open wall space. This makes the entire room look more luxe and creates a focal point.
Adding live plants in the bathroom can make it more comforting. Bonus — they love the moisture created in the room.
LANDSCAPE COUNTS
WHEN IT COMES TO
Luxury Living
by Chris Darnell, ZebraScapes LandscapingWhether it be a commercial property where profit drives management or a quiet residential landscape, keeping up with trends is essential. Diminishing marginal utility is real, and the longer the same old landscape enhancements are there, the less appealing the property becomes. This quality is actually what sets apart average landscapes from luxury landscapes. Here are six trends to upgrade your landscapes.
LANDSCAPE SUSTAINABILITY
Concern for the environment is all the rage. This is not without reason, and keeping just a couple things in mind can make the difference. Using native plant material accustomed to the area reduces resource use, and maintenance needs. Search for these native varieties in flowers, shrubs and even trees.
OUTDOOR COMMON AREAS
If the COVID-19 pandemic taught the world anything, it is the value of outdoor space. Rather than trying to pack everyone inside, the trendiest properties bring the inside, outside. Large patios with kitchenettes, fire pits or even accenting plant material are trendy amenities.
DECORATIVE ROCK
Almost always a trend in Arizona, 2023 will be no different. Not only does decorative rock offer a plethora of creative options when it comes to size, shape and color, it can replace mulch or just line walkways. It is such a versatile addition to any landscape.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING
Why not let your luxury landscape shine at night? The current trend is that every such landscape should possess some form of outdoor lighting. It will illuminate the investment into later hours, allowing both the owner and passerby to enjoy the view.
ARTIFICIAL TURF
In the vein of landscape
sustainability, replacing natural turf with artificial turf can be a great move to lower maintenance. Arizona can often experience drought conditions or be faced with rampant lawn disease. Rather than live with the fluctuation in lawn health, installation of artificial turf keeps quality consistently peaked.
WORKING WITH A LANDSCAPE DESIGNER
The real luxury landscaping trend of 2023 is working with a landscape designer. There is nothing better than a professional custom tailoring a landscape to the needs of the property owner. To best integrate all of the best luxury landscaping trends into a property, a professional can consider all of the right variables.

PLAYROOM DESIGN
There are many upsides to having a designated playroom for your children. It encourages siblings to play, learn and share together. It helps to organize toys while keeping the disorganization that usually accompanies them confined to one space. It keeps clutter and distraction out of their bedrooms, which should be reserved for sleeping.
All practicalities aside, playrooms are just fun, both to put together and to use!
Embrace your creativity (and that of your kids) to design a cheerful, vibrant area for all kinds of unstructured activities that will be the building blocks for their adult selves — but don’t tell them, just let them have a blast!
Secret entrance — This may not be practical for all scenarios but think about how much fun your kids could have just by going into their playroom. A bookcase, bench, trap door or camouflaged ladder to a loft or attic are all splendid.
You can add a small door just big enough for them to walk or crawl through, though you’ll probably want another option for yourself!
Get them into the swing — Incorporate physical play equipment wherever you can. Hang a swing from the ceiling, snake climbing bars and rock wall footholds along the walls and install hanging rings to build up little biceps!
We bet you can even fit a slide into the floorplan!
They’d probably rather go outside for this but giving them another option when it’s too cold or hot out will make sure they get some exercise every day. Just make sure there’s plenty of padding on the floor so they have a soft place to land.
Color it playful — Bright and fun colors and patterns set the stage for play and give the room its own vibe distinct from the rest of the house.
Wallpaper and rugs sporting bold patterns can be a gateway to geometry and bring life to even the darkest room, if that’s what you have to work with.
Posters and decals can showcase superheroes, characters from cartoons or books, favorite animals, solar systems or imaginary lands and are easy to update as preferences evolve.
Cozy seating — Finding adorably pint-sized chairs is a fun hobby for parents accommodating their kids’ needs for places to read, draw, paint, do puzzles or homework and just relax in between all the playing, learning and being they have to do.
The endless options include tiny stools hiding storage compartments, animal-shaped benches, colorful armchairs, rockers and sofas and mini-me versions of the chic styles found in your living room.
Rooms within a room — Again, there are so many directions you can go to create a sheltered play nook. Teepee-style tents and high canopies are popular ways to create a fort-like enclosure, and a playhouse can be assembled at floor level or built into a loft-style bed for a treehouse effect with added privacy and enjoyment.
If you have the room, you can even add a rope bridge for a lively and active connection between sections of a playroom.
Creating your
Home Art Studio
by Valerie DemetrosCreating a dedicated space may be just what you need to get your creative juices flowing.
And whether you’re planning a separate outdoor studio or taking over a room in your house, here are a few things to consider when designing your perfect art studio.
LOOK FOR THE LIGHT
Large windows or even double doors you can fling open in beautiful weather will let in the natural light you need to create as well as provide ventilation. If you’re using large canvases or sculptures, double doors will make it easier to move them.
Natural light in the morning is a must, as well as good artificial light for late-night creative sessions.
KEEP IT MINIMAL
Consider polished concrete or vinyl floors for easy clean up and white walls. Minimal furniture pieces that double as storage work best. Decorate those white walls with your own artwork or inspirational pieces.
This isn’t a gathering spot, it’s your personal creative space. Too much in the room can distract you from your purpose.
STAY ORGANIZED
Organization gives you a clear workspace and keeps the clutter to a minimum. It also helps your mind stay relaxed and focused; clutter can be exhausting.
Find containers for everything and clean up at the end of each session. When you return, you’ll be glad you did.
BRING IN YOUR PERSONALITY
This space is devoted to you and should reflect who you are. Play music that inspires you. Personalize with a wall of color, an inspirational saying or even personal photos.
Just keep it simple, too much can become clutter.
REMEMBER YOUR COMFORT
Invest in a quality chair and make it easy on your body. Invest in tables at the right height and the right lighting.
Keep a cozy sweater for cool days, comfy slippers and a cushioned floor mat if you are standing for long periods.
