LUXURY IS STANDARD
When it’s your time to make your dream come true, turn to the builder who takes it personally and makes it happen.
There’s something luxurious about a custom home. Every detail is purposeful, every room a reflection of you and your unique taste and lifestyle. It’s designed to be your comfort zone, a place where you and your family can enjoy the best part of your lives.
Prescott’s Hometown Builder for more than 30 years.
There are luxury homes, luxury boats, luxury golf carts, luxury watches, and you can go all the way down to luxury spoon rests and luxury dental floss on Google.
Some of these examples may seem a little absurd, but “luxury” is defined as “a material object, service, etc., conducive to sumptuous living, usually a delicacy, elegance or refinement rather than a necessity,” per Dictionary.com.
Any indulgence, no matter how small, can turn a moment into a memory of delight or ease. Anybody can brighten their day with a short bath, a long massage or a marvelous glass of wine.
Even that luxury floss (leading brand Cocofloss is $10 a box) can take the friction out of a mundane, even unpleasant, activity and let you float through those 2 minutes with a smile tugging at the corners of your mouth. This will launch you into the day with a positive attitude and energy to grab the horns of whatever challenges await.
Any luxury, no matter how small, is worthwhile if it uplifts you, so don’t deprive yourself!

&Wine Storage Transport
FOR THE COLLECTOR
Whether you are just beginning your wine collection, or are a seasoned pro with an inhouse wine cellar, eventually you are going to start running out of space. Now what?
You could start drinking more, or you could find off-site storage. Some self-storage facilities have a dedicated area for wine storage with temperaturecontrolled environments and that may be all you need.
But for a true connoisseur, you may want to look into a dedicated winestorage facility.
The best scenario is to store 200 or so bottles at home to drink in the next year. These are wines that do not necessarily need to age. Store the rest offsite.
Off-site storage facilities are built specifically to house your wine, keeping a consistent 50 to 55 degrees and 60% to 70% humidity, perfect for aging wines gracefully. With back-up power, you can be assured a power outage will not put your collection at risk, as it would at home.
For a planned delivery, the ease of off-site storage helps when they transport your wine to you or the facility.
Vinum 55, with locations in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Texas, transports deliveries using consistent temperatures, real-time updates, CellarTracking software for cataloging and unpacking services by trained professionals.
Maybe a visit every few months to the facility is all you need to view and stock up. Or having the wine bottles close by may be a necessity. Just being able to sip a glass while admiring your collection
may be enough to put you off the idea of storing off site. Only you can decide.
The Vault Wine Storage, with several locations in Arizona, offers 24-hour access, seven days a week for members, as well as 24-hour security. And although most facilities are fully insured, it is always best to have your own insurance, just as you would for anything else.
For collectors aging wine for years, off-site storage also offers peace of mind that your wine is properly stored while avoiding the temptation to pop a cork before its time.
Keeping wine off-site also ensures you are using your space to the best advantage.
Installing a large wine-storage cabinet can be costly and may not mean a return when selling your house, unless you can find another oenophile. Otherwise, it will just be a costly job to remove it by the next buyer.
Of course, planning ahead becomes a priority while storing your collection off site. Grabbing a bottle on a whim is so much easier when it’s right there rather than driving, especially if the facility is quite far.
And the expense can add up. Depending on how much wine is at home, and how much is off site, the cost may even out after factoring in the bump in electricity. The cost of facilities varies but generally, passive storage will cost less than facilities that promote a social element.
Pop a cork and think it over.
Jazz Up Experimenting
Wby Michelle Beck, Owner, Purple Clover Boutiqueith the holidays over and the weather still cold, now is the time to experiment with different fashion trends to add some luxurious touches to your wardrobe!
It isn’t as hard as you might think to turn your everyday fashion into something just a little more special.
One of the easiest ways to add a touch of luxury is a pair of gold hoop earrings. It’s no secret that gold is the color of the moment and elevates any outfit! You could be wearing sweats or workout clothes, but if you wear a pair of gold earrings your look is changed completely.
If you are fortunate enough to have long hair, a lovely claw clip made of tortoise shell or even one covered in beautiful fabric is the way to go. They are easy to wear, work great for second day hair and are subtly elegant.
The perfect pair of sunglasses can make anyone look like they just stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine.
The look of the moment is an oversized rectangle, but many different shapes and styles can work. Just find one that works with the shape of your face. The good news is that you no longer have to pay a premium price to find a stylish pair.
Creating Beauty & Delivering Happiness
Allan’s Flowers has been providing beautiful flowers of exceptional quality in creative arrangements. We pride ourselves on carrying on that tradition here in Prescott and beyond.
Amplify Luxury
The range of associations we have with wallpaper are just one indicator of its staying power.
From quaint country kitchens to grand ballrooms in mansions, wallpaper has been setting the tone for our homes for centuries. It’s a classic design tool that never went away and has seen a big resurgence as we look for ways to make our interiors more engrossing and atmospheric as we spend more time at home.
Advances in technology and continued reinvention from artists and designers are giving us more options than ever to create new moods and worlds at home by decking walls in exciting colors, textures and graphics — don’t relegate imagery to an accent wall, let it envelop your rooms in wonder and whimsy.
BOTANICALS ARE BIG
Florals have always been predominant in wallpapering and there’s no stopping their comeback, but the tradition is being expanded to include vines, stems, seedlings, berries and anything else you find in the great outdoors.
Trees can create the popular jungle look, bring the forest outside your window inside or evoke a riparian system. Large-scale prints add volume and depth to large rooms while smaller ones add detail to more intimate spaces.
WARM THE ROOM
Deep, saturated colors are fantastic for creating an inviting glow within a room. The renewed interest in warm neutrals and earth tones is making that easier than ever.
Look for prints with stripes, florals or botanicals that have a gold undertone or, for ultimate luxury, find wallpaper with touches of gold leaf to get that inimitable radiance that will stick with your family and guests whenever they leave the house.
GET GRAPHIC
If floral or botanical patterns don’t interest you, there are a lot of geometric patterns out there for an angular alternative.
Rectangles, cubes, triangles, hexagons and many other shapes are showing up everywhere, in many cases arranged in tunnels and 3-D designs that play with space and help the room appear larger.
Others have a cheerfully retro midcentury vibe that evoke Space Age progress and optimism.
TEXTURE GIVES CONTEXT
Wallpaper that incorporates texture, whether through its composition or by imitation, is growing in popularity. This can have a more subtle effect than a printed pattern but is no less effective.
The feel and look of linen, grass cloth, raised leaf or other details can be created by heavily embossed sheets that lend a homey ambiance or printed wallpaper simulating wood grain, brick or other materials.
SILKY SOPHISTICATION
“Silk wallpaper” can be one of two things: any sheet of any kind of fabric that’s paper-backed or authentic silk applied to a wall, either with some sort of adhesive or after being stretched across a frame.
Given its fragile nature it’s difficult to successfully apply silk directly to a wall, but “silk plaster” is a paintable form of wallpaper containing natural fibers including silk, cotton, cellulose and other eco-friendly substances, offering a seriously sophisticated look that’s free of artificial ingredients.
Sumptuous Touches Luxury Hotel Bedroom
Many of us love spending nights at upscale hotels and resorts for the perfectly firm-yet-soft mattress, the freshly washed zillionthread sheets, the heavenly comforter, the thoughtful décor, the perfectly calibrated lighting, the extra touches like fresh flowers or a carafe of water on the nightstand.
It’s just so much more relaxing than home.
There’s no reason you can’t drift off in that blissful setting every night after investing a little of your thoughts and funds.
SPLURGE ON YOUR MATTRESS
Your memory of your hotel room is directly related to the comfort of the mattress, so spend enough time and money to find one that’s going to please you and anyone you share the bed with. Start with such quality companies as Saatva, Nectar and Helix and figure out whether you’re most comfortable on innersprings, foam or a hybrid construction. Or, you could cut to the chase and order one directly from Ritz-Carlton, Westin, Kimpton or wherever you had your last best night’s sleep.
CHOOSE SHEETS BY TOUCH
Regardless of the thread-count joke we just made it shouldn’t be your only criteria when you’re shopping for sheets. Higher thread counts indicate material that’s denser and more durable, but touch a sample of the sheet if at all possible to ensure that it feels right to you.
Crisp percale offers more breathability and natural comfort while sateen is adored for its silky-soft feel, slight sheen and wrinkle resistance.
If you’re ordering them without sampling them first, you can’t go wrong with iconic Italian labels like Sferra, Frette and Mascioni.
KEEP LIGHTING
UNDER CONTROL
Indirect lighting from lamps with soft fabric shades or those requisite bedside wall sconces will give you the soft, moody lighting that’s conducive to sleep and other nighttime activities.
Ideally this is all you’ll need as many sleep scientists recommend doing anything that requires more exertion away from the bedroom. If you do need stronger lighting, rely as much as you can on natural light and install a dimmable ceiling light fixture so you can dial it down as soon as you need to.
YOUR PRECIOUS PETS Outfit TOP DESIGNERS
You love your designer clothes, handbags, belts and shoes. It’s important to look good and surround yourself in luxury when you can. But don’t forget your pets.
After all, they deserve it for being such loyal companions. And designers are finally recognizing how important our pets are to us, and how important it is for them to shine.
From Versace to Hermés, Fendi to Gucci, there is something out there for your cat or dog to put a confident bounce in their step.
If you’re looking to dress your pup in style for the winter, Prada has added a line of dog puffers and coats to keep them warm and fashionable.
The Gucci Pet Collection offers a broad range of products designed for dogs and cats. Items include collars and harnesses in plain leather, GG canvas, web stripe or the herbarium or all-over geometric G print and embellished with details like the interlocking G logo or studs.
There’s no question your pup will be turning heads. Leashes, bag holders and even air tag cases are available in the same motifs to coordinate.
Fendi’s luxury pet collection, sporting the signature FF pattern, includes a leash, pet carrier, dog coat and collar. Collars are adorned with FF pendants to add elegance.
Iconic label Hermès jumped into the trend with a pet collection containing a blanket, flying disk, dog bed, leash, harness and even a stylish food bowl. Crafted from oak, the bowl is imprinted with the French house’s Chaine d’Ancre motif and has a stainless-steel bowl that stays in place with magnets.
Pet carriers are made with waterresistant and breathable fabric in the colors of the Hermès equestrian line.
If you’re in a Breakfast at Tiffany’s mood, Tiffany & Co has designed collars, leashes and bowls in the distinctive teal hue to pamper your pooch or feline.
Even Donatella Versace has designed a pet line to pamper her own Jack Russell, Audrey. And now you can indulge your pet with a bed in the line’s barocco print or a gold-studded Medusa logo leash set with matching collar.
The line even includes a pet bath robe in black with gold trim, a shirt with the Medusa logo and a leather pet waste bag holder with a Medusa charm.
Finally, no wardrobe is complete without a bit of Louis, and that includes your pet’s. Louis Vuitton now carries collars, leashes and a pet carrier, all in its monogrammed canvas.
THE RIGHT WINE, RIGHT CIGAR THE PERFECT
Although spirits and cigars seem to be the perfect match, wine and cigars can form a love match if you know how to combine them.
They can be tricky to pair but there are no hard rules, just basic principles to get the most out of both. So, grab your corkscrew and your lighter and let’s start pairing.
RED WINE PAIRING
Because there are as many red wines as there are cigars, this makes pairing an adventure. One choice for wine by cigar aficionados is Chianti, a classic wine no matter your cigar choice.
More specifically, pair a Tempranillo Rioja with its leathery tannins with a fullbodied Nicaraguan cigar, which can stand up to the earthy wine.
WHITE WINE PAIRING
White wine is delicate and paired with cigars less frequently. It is best matched with light to medium-bodied cigars.
This way the taste of wine and the cigar will not overlap. A mild cigar with hints of coffee and cinnamon pairs well with welloaked chardonnays. Light up a Pilotico Pepe Mendez, a honeyed, medium-bodied cigar, with a bottle of 2015 Penfolds Yattarna chardonnay, which spent eight months in barriques (oak barrels) to reach ultimate woodiness.
BOUQUET:
ROSÉ PAIRING
Rosé wine has the qualities of both white and red with a unique aroma. It’s light with hints of pink grapefruit and raspberries and can be combined with many cigars, especially medium-bodied like Cohiba Coronas Especiales. The cigar softens the acidity and brings out a creaminess in the wine.
For a light and beautiful pairing, pop the cork on a Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial Rosé and let its effervescence enhance the stunning flavors of a Honduran cigar, like a Camacho Corojo.
It’s a self-indulgent pairing but, then again, why not?
SWEET WINE PAIRINGS
Sweet wine is a pleasant choice and can work smoothly in pairings. These are best paired with lightto medium-bodied cigars.
The Moscato d’Asti wine is an alternative white wine that has become a popular cigar vino as it is mildly carbonated and deliciously sweet. Choose a nutty, spicy cigar to avoid competing with the sweetness like a Partagas Black Label.
Now that vacations are back on the calendar, it’s time to invest in luggage that will make a statement.
If you want bags that are wellmade and useful but also stylish, luxury models are where it’s at.
Of course, it can get a bit confusing. If you need a suitcase that you can stuff those extra souvenirs into at the last minute, then a soft-sided bag fits the bill. They also tend to have extra pockets to stash a book or magazine.
For those who don’t need pockets and travel more often, hard-sided may be better. Some are expandable, giving you last-minute extra space, and they tend to hold up a little better.
Let’s take a look at a few luxury suitcases that make a statement while offering a quality bag.

Simple Steps
5-Star Meals TO SERVING
Pandemic-related restaurant closures appear to be a thing of the past, but there are many other reasons to level up our cooking and plating skills at home, as much as we may love the luxury of leaving all the work to professionals.
Besides reducing our costs, preparing meals at home gives us full control
over what’s being fed to us, which is critical to our health in so many ways. It promotes a more intimate family dining experience as well as intellectual stimulation and creative thinking.
On top of that, it’s easy to make our food just as appealing to our taste buds and eyes as those in our most beloved go-to eateries.
USE POWERFULLY FRESH INGREDIENTS
This is what sets high-quality meals and restaurants above the rest, and it’s the easiest way to create a magnetic meal.
Troll the best markets, both farmers and retail, for the best produce to incorporate into your recipes, and steer away from processed products as much as possible. Take time to explore how to use different seasonal crops, and find versatile heavy hitters that will elevate a variety of dishes to tasty and memorable heights.
PLAN AND PREP AHEAD
“Throwing together” a gourmet meal is possible but not a sure thing — it’s rarely easy or comfortable for the cook.
Make the process more pleasant for everyone by assembling a menu and ensuring you have immediate access to all the ingredients. Make ahead everything you can where you won’t sacrifice flavor and freshness.
This might feel like you’re extending your time in the kitchen, but it will end up saving you time overall.
USE THE RIGHT TOOLS
While it’s still wise to eschew gadgets that take their name from a specific food, you should find the implements that will improve upon your skill at putting consistently polished and professionallooking meals on your table.
Purchasing high-quality knives and keeping them sharp is the first step, but also invest in a mandolin and other slicing aids, along with a mixer, blender and food processor to keep everything looking and tasting as delectable as it would in a restaurant.
LEAVE BREATHING ROOM ON PLATES
Crowded plates bring buffets to mind, so pay attention to how food looks on your plate. White space (and yes, white- or light-colored plates are the most appetizing) brings the color and texture of food to the forefront, so keeping the portions in check glams up your meal as well as keeps everyone’s calorie consumption in check. Creating height through careful stacking adds visual interest while exposing more plate surface.
ENJOY THE JOURNEY
This is prime time to let your ingenuity shine!
Play with complementary and contrasting flavors, experiment with sides and seasonings, and teach yourself how to artfully drizzle sauces and arrange garnishes. Borrow ideas from your favorite restaurants and make them your own by adapting them to the seasonal availability of ingredients and the mood you want to create every time you and yours sit down to eat.
LocationISN’T EVERYTHING
by Gary Nelson, Realty Executives of FlagstaffWhat’s the most important thing when it comes to real estate? Location, location, location as they say.
When it comes to the location of that perfect home you have always dreamed of, make sure there aren’t any challenges you didn’t expect. Make sure the area and the amenities will stay the way you expect them to.
Here are a few desirable locations that may have some great perks as long as you keep in mind the potential challenges.
NATIONAL FOREST LANDS
Backing national forest is quite important to many people. Having your own great views and potential access to forest would make anyone happy.
Keep in mind that in remote areas, some utilities may not be available. Also, make sure your property is Fire Wise and can handle what Mother Nature might throw your way.
Bordering national forest in the intermountain west is like beachfront in the coastal areas; you will have to pay accordingly for those views and trees.
GOLF COURSE PROPERTY
Spectacular views and meticulously cared for greens could be what you experience from your patio, deck or windows. Quick access to the greens,
club amenities and activities can also provide a wonderful lifestyle. Many people enjoy the social aspect of golf course living as well, with golfers enjoying a great game on a wonderful day. Whether on a public course or inside one of Northern Arizona’s gated and private communities, golf course living has tremendous benefits.
STATE FORESTS AND LANDS
Sometimes state trust lands are just as spectacular as national forest lands, but be prepared that this location may be temporary. In Arizona, trust lands can be sold with the proceeds going toward public school construction. Although national forest lands may be traded, that would be
very rare. State lands, however, are temporary, and some of the largest developments in the state were previously trust lands.
UNDEVELOPED LAND
Keep in mind that undeveloped land may be developed in the future.
You may want to negotiate a building envelope with the owner of an adjacent lot or negotiate a view corridor to maintain that view you want. Many subdivisions have building envelopes built into the CC and Rs or plat maps of the development.
But a negotiated view corridor or negotiated height restriction may go a long way toward preserving that wonderful Northern Arizona view you always wanted.
Ireland! It’s known as the land of mischievous leprechauns, wishgranting fairies and pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, but what makes Ireland magical is her people.
We wanted to enjoy all we could pack into 10 days, so decided a private tour as opposed to renting a car would provide us with the ability to focus on the villages dotted along rugged coastlines and not stress over narrow, winding and unfamiliar roads dodging sheep.
Our private guide from Love Irish Tours™, Gordon, met us in our hotel lobby in Dublin and we were off to Blarney with a morning stop at the Rock of Cashel. Before we had reached the outskirts of the city we were ready to adopt this gentle and warm-hearted young man.
The Rock of Cashel is a hauntingly beautiful and well-preserved medieval complex, complete with castle and chapel, surrounded by an ancient Celtic graveyard. The main fortress was the seat of the power in Munster prior to the Norman Invasion.
Next we were delighted to arrive in Cork and the town of Blarney for lunch, and then off to visit the stone said to hold the power of eloquence. In truth, I found the grounds with its meandering stream and the gardens exploding with spring enthusiasm more compelling.
The long march up stone steps to kiss a cold slab while hanging backward over a parapet did not honor me with the gift of gab. A visit to Blarney Woolen Mills, well, Merry Christmas Fam.
We were on the Ring of Kerry after breakfast the next morning and while we enjoyed some hearty laughs with Gordon, his explanation of the famine houses and oppression of the Irish people that led to 1.5 million residents leaving this beautiful country for
America to never see their families again was sobering. The tumbled-down stone reminders of these cottages are a living tribute of the Irish for the respect they have for their ancestors.
The drive along this breathtaking coastline eventually led us to Dingle where we enjoyed strolling through the shops while marveling at our luck at clear skies and gentle breezes. We took advantage of it to walk the path down to the shore.
Skellig Rock, where monks retreated in the sixth century, lies south and the Blasket Islands off the west coast. The last inhabitants were moved from the islands in 1954 although camping is allowed. However, tourism to Skellig, where scenes from one of the Star Wars movies was filmed, is strictly controlled.
The two days we were based in Killarney allowed us ample time to explore Killarney National Park, the Torc Waterfall and the Lakes of Killarney. At Muckross Lake we toured the 19th century mansion where no expense was spared for a two-night visit of Queen Victoria in 1861. The rich tapestries and furnishings involved with the renovations and preparation took years to complete and led to the financial ruin of the owner.
Our nights in Killarney were spent enjoying live music in a local pub; every stool was occupied and an older gentleman kindly waved us into the small booth he was vacating.
As much as we wished our stay in Killarney would never end, we still had much to explore as we continued our journey to County Clare.
In our next issue, I will take you with me to Bunratty, Kylemore Manor, the Cliffs of Moher and complete the adventure at Trim Castle. With a Braveheart, until next time, Sláinte.
What Constitutes Luxury? When it Comes to REAL ESTATE ,
byThe word “luxury” often is used in real estate property descriptions, but what exactly does that mean?
Is there a universal, understood definition of luxury real estate, with minimum requirements and expectations? According to Merriam-Webster, the word “luxury” is defined as:
1. a condition of abundance or great ease and comfort
2. something adding to pleasure or comfort but not absolutely necessary
3. an indulgence in something that provides pleasure, satisfaction or ease
Applying that definition to real estate typically translates to properties that share the following features:
PRIME LOCATION
Luxury homes typically are located in sought-after areas that provide features not readily available at all price points. In our area, these locations usually offer spectacular mountain or forest views, golf course frontage, gated access and/or amenities that accompany a master-planned community such as a clubhouse, fitness center, pool, etc.
QUALITY OF BUILD
Luxury homes are expected to feature high-end fixtures and finishes. These often include upgraded flooring, windows, stone and woodwork and top-of-the-line appliances.
CUSTOM AMENITIES
Luxury homes generally contain special-interest rooms and areas that reflect the owners’ lifestyle. Theater rooms, libraries, wine cellars, gyms and entertainment areas with bars and table games often are incorporated into the design.
PRICE POINT
A general rule of thumb in the real estate industry is that the price of a luxury home should fall in the top 10% of all homes for sale in a given area. This formula can be helpful in a broad sense, but the results will vary from day-to-day, particularly
on the lower end of the scale.
All this being said, then, when it comes to real estate, what exactly constitutes luxury? After working with hundreds of real estate clients over the years, we’ve discovered that the true definition of a “luxury home” is very personal and unique to each person.
Going back to the definition — a “condition of abundance or great ease and comfort” — may mean a 10,000-square-foot custom contemporary home in a gated golf course community to one person, or a 1,200-square-foot log cabin nestled in the woods away from all of life’s distractions to someone else.
As it turns out, the universal understanding and appreciation of “luxury” seems to be shifting from material affluence to the luxury of rich experiences and lifestyles.
Men
CAN STEP OUT with Confidence
IN THESE SHOES
Guys, you have it easy when it comes to footwear. Many basic styles have been around for decades if not centuries, so keeping a select assortment in your closet will keep you appropriately shod for any occasion and impress the ladies (and many dudes) with your sophisticated, dependable taste.
OXFORDS
These are the most classic of the classics and have had many years to develop the versatility they offer to you today. They can carry you to the office and smartcasual environments all the way up to the formality of high-powered business occasions and most black-tie events. A pair of shiny black oxfords works with any dark pants (including jeans) and suits in these settings while a brown or tan pair can travel with chinos, khakis or any other full-length trousers.
DRESSY SNEAKERS
This phrase sounds like an oxymoron to some, but it’s entirely reasonable to keep a pair of trainers or running shoes away from your workouts for casual occasions where a neat, clean appearance is still desirable.
Start with a classic white pair from Nike or the other top labels that’s as comfortable and stylish as you can get for shopping trips and any other activity that has you on your feet most of the time.
LOAFERS
Loafers fall a little closer to oxfords than sneakers on the formality spectrum but are spectacularly versatile, wearing as well with suits as weathered jeans and a T-shirt. They’re the perfect summer shoes when you want to dial your look up a little bit without going overboard.
They come in all colors and materials, but a timeless dark brown pair will never steer you wrong.
DRESS BOOTS
Dozens of styles fall under this category, making it easy for you to find one that will be as much of an all-star in cooler months as loafers are in the warmer ones. Whether they’re wingtips, Chelsea boots, derby boots, chukkas, brogues or even cowboy boots, these shoes have slimmer silhouettes and more refined detailing that allow you to cruise into just about any surroundings.
Wreck EVERYBODY ’S Golf Game
Golf is perhaps the most upscale sport there is, yet the experience often leaves a lot to be desired. Traveling from tee to tee means schlepping your bag across a sea of green or trying to maneuver a topheavy golf cart with no shock absorption and an earsplitting backup alarm.
Consider how much more opulent an occasion it would be driving your own vehicle, one that actually warrants being called a “car.”
Take a look at these beauties, which in some cases may distract your opponents and give you the upper hand!
GARIA SUPERSPORT— MSRP $73,000
The sexiest 2-seater you’ll find anywhere, you’ll be taking this siren throughout your neighborhood and onto the links with its Mercedes-inspired interior dazzling everyone because it’s not hidden behind any doors or tinted windows.
It’s got a refrigerator built into the dashboard, 10-inch touchscreen with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capability, speakers in the roof and seats, Golf and Street drive modes, a battery range of up to 50 miles, a reverse camera and a payload of 770 pounds.
The sleek look and understated elegance will wow people in every setting, but it doesn’t forget its roots — a golf scorecard function is integrated into the touchscreen.
TOMBERLIN E-MERGE SS SALOON—MSRP $31,050
Available with two, four or six seats, the six-seat version is perfect for bringing the family with you on the links or barhopping between your neighbor’s homes.
With a Jeep-styled front grill, premium SS steering wheel, pedestrian warning system and the option to get the industry’s largest standard lithium battery that gets up to 80 miles per charge, you’ll be ready to roll through any situation with this heavy hitter.
VINTAGE BY STREETROD— APPROX. $25,000
For pure style you should check out this company’s knockout vintage-inspired topless roadsters, convertibles and hardtops. These endlessly customizable vehicles can come out looking like just about any old-time beauty you’ve had or longed for in the past.
The eye-popping colors and styling crafted by artisans cover a solid electric or gas motor with LED speedometer and fun details like oak side racks and “ooga” horns. Everyone will have as much fun looking at one of these as you have driving it.
THE GOLF CART HOVERCRAFT— MSRP $58,000
Bubba Watson debuted what turned out not to be an April Fool’s gag 10 years ago — an amphibious vehicle that can glide over water hazards and sand traps as easily as turf.
It’s still available today from Hammacher Schlemmer and has a twin-cylinder Hirth engine and 9-blade axial flow fan that can raise it up to 9 inches off whatever kind of surface it’s on and travel up to 45 mph.
The hull meets the Coast Guard’s hovercraft standard.
It comfortably seats four and leaves room for two golf bags in the back and comes with a hauling trailer. It may not have the postmodern conveniences as the SuperSport, but you’ll be a new contender for the title of “greatest show on grass.”
Fragrance Legs
with These Tips
When you go to the trouble of selecting a perfume or cologne and making it part of your image, the last thing you want is for it to wane by lunch or mid-afternoon.
You may have the option of bringing it with you in a purse or briefcase but don’t want to weigh yourself down any more than you need to.
Here is a step-by-step guide to help your scent have the staying power to get you through the day and any fun you get to have at night!
1. Choose complementary products — Layering fragrances is an art of its own, a matter of considering the interaction of your shower soap or gel, moisturizer and any other scented products you use on your skin. Many of us enjoy creating a signature scent of our own by mixing and matching products.
If you want to magnify the effect of your chosen product, many manufacturers offer a full line of complementary cleansers and lotions.
If not, search for merchandize that has a similar smell.
2. Moisturize immediately after showering — Hydrated skin will hold your fragrance for much longer, so it stands to reason that skin that’s just been showered or bathed is in the ideal condition to receive your fragrance.
Simply blot your skin dry and slather on the moisturizer. Then, apply a dab of Vaseline or petroleum jelly to the pulse points behind your ears, the base of your neck, inside your elbows and wrists, and/or behind your knees where you plan to apply the fragrance. This really does work for boosting the range and duration of your scent!
3. Spritz your fragrance — Perfume or cologne should be stored in a cool, dry place rather than your bathroom to ensure its potency, so step out to your nightstand or whatever convenient place you’ve stashed it in.
You don’t need to apply it to all pulse points, but hit at least a couple of them for maximum effect. Do not rub your wrists together, however, as this will just “bruise” or deplete the scent.
Right Glass WINE a Chance to Shine
You took the time to carefully choose the right wines, and you store them correctly. To round out the experience, make sure you use the right glass.
Of course, you could drink out of anything — wine glass, coffee mug or straight from the bottle. But then, you wouldn’t experience your wine to its best advantage. Let’s take a look at the glasses you need and what to do with them.
UNIVERSAL
Universal wine glasses are all-purpose chameleons for red, white and rosé with a bowl and opening that are not too big or small. They’re excellent options if you want to keep things simple. There are glasses designed specifically for rosé, but a universal glass works just as well.
RED WINE
A red-wine glass has a wider bowl and larger opening, which allows for better aeration of tannin-rich wines like cabernet sauvignon and Bordeaux.
WHITE WINE
Look for a smaller bowl and opening and a long stem to keep wines like sauvignon blanc cool. Also they better deliver aromas. However, with a full-bodied white wine, you’ll want a larger bowl.
GIVES YOUR
SPECIALTY WINES
If you’re a port enthusiast, choose a small glass with a narrow mouth to reduce evaporation. And don’t forget your Champagne flute, whose shape keeps your bubbles intact.
Of course, there are plenty more specialty wines and glasses, but you get the picture. The glass does make a difference.
CRYSTAL OR GLASS?
Crystal glasses are durable because crystal contains traces of minerals like magnesium or zinc. However, since it’s porous it can corrode in the dishwasher.
On the other hand, glass won’t corrode, but it will break. So go with crystal for durability and hand washing or go with glass for the ease of the dishwasher but expect occasional breakage.
SWIRLING IN YOUR GLASS?
If you can’t decant, a brief swirl exposes your wine to oxygen, and a quick swirl before your first sip releases different aromas that won’t appear otherwise.
Far Infrared MATS OfferHealing
Since ancient times, numerous cultures around the world have recognized that many degenerative conditions can be caused by low body temperature.
Increasing the body’s temperature by just 1.8 degrees is enough to increase immune function by up to 40%, encourage the production of hormones and enzymes by 50% and stimulate your metabolic rate by 12%.
However, unless you regularly visit saunas, hot springs or sweat lodges, it’s difficult to reap the
benefits of hyperthermia (raising your body temperature).
Far infrared mats are designed to raise your body temperature in a noninvasive way in your home where you can heal and regenerate. Far infrared is a form of electromagnetic radiation (light), with wavelengths between 3 micrometers to 1,000 micrometers.
These mats are about the size of a standard yoga mat or a smaller travel version. They are composed of 17 layers of various biotech materials that
produce far infrared rays. This includes a layer of healing crystals that emits negative ions and boosts your mood and neutralizes free radicals in the body and gentle magnetic fields that penetrate deep into tissues and organs.
Far infrared rays can penetrate up to 6 to 8 inches into the body. This deeply penetrating heat encourages a “healthy fever” that promotes the production of antibodies and white blood cells that kill off invading pathogens.
To get the benefits, just lay the mat on the floor, plug it in and select the heat setting. Allow the mat to come to temperature for 20 minutes before using it. The benefits are many.
The sweat glands are stimulated by improved circulation along with the fever caused by far infrared rays, allowing the body to release cellular wastes and toxins to help detoxify the body. This supports the elimination of carcinogenic substances, heavy
metals, uric acid, cholesterol and other toxins.
The comfort of heat is soothing emotionally and physically.
If you have tight muscles because of stress, the healing heat from a far infrared mat can loosen tension. As a result, your cortisol levels will drop.
The healing heat from these mats encourages fast recovery, reduces inflammation in the joints, muscles and connective tissues. It also helps heal damaged tissues by helping the body deliver oxygen-rich blood to the areas and carry away metabolic wastes.
One study investigated the effects of far infrared rays on chronic pain associated with fibromyalgia. Of those who received therapy once per day, two to five times per week, all reported a significant reduction in pain of up to 50%. After 10 sessions, participants reported pain reduction up to 78%.
If you’ve ever experienced hot yoga, these mats can give you a similar experience by warming the body as you pose, as well as the extra benefit of the healing far infrared rays.
How does it work? Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) grounds you in the earth’s magnetic field for a full-body reset, while Infrared’s deeply-penetrating heat doubles your dose of recovery and detox. When combined into the Go Mat, these therapeutic technologies create the ultimate recovery tool.
Neem Oil
PACKED WITH POWER
NTO TREAT YOUR SKIN & HAIR
eem oil — chances are you’ve never heard of it. But it’s actually been around for a long time with proven benefits for your skin.
Derived from the fruits and seeds of the neem tree, people have been using neem oil on their skin and hair for centuries. The trees grow mainly in the Indian subcontinent.
Neem oil is rich in fatty acids, such as palmitic, linoleic and oleic acids, which help support healthy skin.
The leaf of the plant also provides health benefits because it contains plant compounds called flavonoids and polyphenols, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Also, neem oil contains azadirachtin, a natural pesticide.
A 2017 study found that the oil was effective in treating wrinkles, skin redness and water loss. Researchers also found that the extract boosted levels of a collagen-producing enzyme called procollagen and a protein called elastin.
Another study in 2019 found that soaps containing extracts of neem leaf or neem bark prevented the growth of several strains of bacteria.
For dandruff, you can add a few drops of neem oil right into a handful of shampoo before working it into your scalp. Neem oil already is found in many dandruff shampoos because it is a natural anti-fungal.
Neem oil is packed with elements that benefit the skin like vitamin E and essential fatty acids, making it a great natural way to fight dryness.
Research shows it penetrates deeply, healing cracks that occur from severe dryness and locking in moisture. Just add a few drops of neem oil into your favorite lotion or coconut oil before applying.
Because it stimulates collagen production, this will also improve elasticity, and its high vitamin E content also helps prevent free radicals from harming your skin.
As an added benefit, neem oil’s antibacterial properties make for a great acne treatment. Use a cotton swab to apply neem oil directly to breakouts.
Make sure you are using organic, cold-pressed neem oil. It should have a cloudy, yellow-brown color and a strong odor (akin to garlic and sulfur). But don’t worry, that won’t last.
It can be potent, so be sure to test it on a small patch of skin before using it extensively, just in case. Mix a few drops of neem oil with water or liquid soap. Apply the mixture to a small area of skin on your arm. If the spot becomes red, inflamed or itchy, stop using it.
4 Reasons Aesthetician
by Aymee Wilson, Owner & Founder, Wilson AestheticsTO KEEP SEEING YOUR
People are looking to cut costs these days and are taking a look at which luxuries they’re able to do without. But there are some luxurious things that are closer to being necessities, and regular appointments with your aesthetician fall into this category. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and requires professional attention and daily medical-grade skin care use. Seeing a dermatologist at least once a year is important but going in monthly to repair the ongoing damage done by the environment and the aging process is the most practical thing you can do for your skin. Aestheticians are trained to provide treatments to reverse some of the damage with in-office treatments and help you with what you can do at home.
ELIMINATE THE GUESSWORK
Everyone who’s ever tried to maintain a steady skin care routine on their own must endure a lot of trial and error while figuring out what products will help and not do harm, especially if their skin defies easy categorization. An aesthetician will do a complete analysis of your skin, recommend the best products for your specific
skin type, and constantly follow up with you to make sure the products are right for you.
GET THE BEST RESULTS
Facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplanes and all other treatments should only be performed by a licensed aesthetician!
DETOX YOUR SKIN
Daily cleansing and weekly exfoliation at home are the first line of defense against dirt, pollutants and other environmental aggressors. But
your aesthetician can speed up the process with antioxidant-rich creams, vitamin C and retinols as well as facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and extraction of pores, pimples and blackheads.
ENJOY BETTER MENTAL HEALTH
The relaxation you feel when you’re being pampered and especially during a facial massage provided by a trained professional is enormously beneficial to fighting the effects of stress, which are even more damaging to your brain than they are for your skin!
Hammams
OFFER COMPLETE Spa Experience
Turkish baths, or hammams, are rooted in the same ancient traditions as public bathing houses found in Rome, Greece, England and other early civilizations. We may consider these facilities primitive from today’s standpoint, but hammams have spread around the globe and provided superlative skin and body treatments for thousands of years.
Hammams are found throughout Turkey, Morocco and much of the Middle East, with some regional differences but following many tenets of the Islamic faith.
They are renowned for providing refreshment and personalized service from attendants who provide full-body exfoliation for skin renewal, inspiring many more spas in resort cities around the globe.
The nearest to us is the Joya Spa at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia.
Like other types of spas, hammams offer many options but generally contain heated, sultry rooms where visitors enjoy being scrubbed down, cleansed and rinsed until they feel brand-new. Many Turkish and Moroccan sites offer traditional mud baths as well.
Most hammams have separate sections for men and women, though some modern ones cater to couples. Customers can wear underwear or a swimsuit while being served in hammams, but in Turkey most of the bathers will be nude.
You will change out of your clothes and step into a warm room where your job is to relax and sip some tea as you prepare for the pampering, which can last from 60 to 120 minutes. Then you step into a steamier space where you are given towels and rest while your pores open wider to speed skin detoxing and exfoliation.
Then you proceed to the “hot room” and lie on a table or bench while your attendant uses a roughly woven glove to massage you using short, powerful strokes. This could cause some irritation so don’t be shy about asking your attendant to adjust as needed.
Then you’re treated to a thick, soapy cleanse for your reward.
This is followed by rinsing off and enjoying another massage before you leave feeling thoroughly relaxed and rejuvenated while plotting your return!
DON’T FORGET:
Your Hands
Need Regular Skin Care
When it comes to your skin, you probably already have a daily skin care routine for your face, neck and décolletage.
But are you neglecting your hands? They need more care and attention than the occasional application of hand cream.
The skin on the back of your hands is just as thin as some areas on your face. Meaning your hands are just as fragile and susceptible to signs of aging. A daily hand care routine is vital not only to prevent drying and age spots, but to prevent loss of elasticity.
To build a beneficial hand care routine, start with keeping your hands clean. Wash them throughout the day using a mild, moisturizing soap with water and gently pat dry.
The next step is moisturizing to keep your hands soft and smooth. Gently rub moisturizer into your hands immediately after each washing, if possible, to prevent soap from stripping the natural oils.
Carry a nongreasy hand cream with you, like celeb-favorite Josie Maran’s Whipped Argan Oil Intensive Hand Cream or The Hand Treatment by La Mer.
Even better, deep condition your hands occasionally and remember to protect them with gloves while cleaning to avoid harmful chemicals.
You may remember to use sunscreen on your face, but don’t forget your hands.
This is a vital part of any hand care routine because sun exposure can lead to premature signs of ageing and age spots. Apply to the top of your hands each morning and reapply, if possible, followed by hand cream.
And you probably exfoliate in the shower, but you may not include the back of your hands.
Exfoliation is as essential for your hands as the rest of the body, promoting blood circulation and removing dead skin.
Even though experts suggest keeping your nails short for added hygiene, it all comes down to personal preference.
Longer nails do tend to hide more germs, but if you like your nails a bit long, just remember to scrub under your nails each day.
Finally, manicures don’t just look good, they are beneficial to your hands.
Whether you hit the salon or treat yourself at home, give your nails the attention they deserve with regular cuticle trimming, filing, moisturizing and a soothing massage. When your hands look good, you’ve got the perfect motivation to maintain a regular hand care routine.
RETINOL OR RETINOIDS?
Do You Need Ask your Dermatologist
Retinol is a form of vitamin A that many swear is a fountain of youth for its ability to ease skin hyperpigmentation, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, accelerate collagen production and minimize acne and other breakouts.
And then there are retinoids, which are coveted for the same reasons.
It’s easy to grasp the difference once you know that retinol is a form of retinoid.
RETINOIDS
Any product that contains retinoic acid, a form of vitamin A, is a retinoid, but the term is usually reserved for prescription-strength products with higher concentrations. They’re typically found in creams and ointments, though some are available as pills.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first approved a retinoid for prescription use, tretinoin (Retin-A), in 1971, and it was followed by others including adapalene, tazarotene, acitretin and bexarotene. They are used to treat many conditions including acne, psoriasis, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and some forms of skin cancer.
Side effects can include excessive drying, redness, flaking and irritation, especially for those who have dry or sensitive skin. They can also leave your face more vulnerable to sun exposure, so night use and extra daytime protection are recommended.
RETINOL
The anti-aging power of prescription retinoids garnered huge interest from professionals and patients, ultimately leading to approval of a less-potent version, retinol.
Retinoids with concentrations of 0.1% or less of retinoic acid are known as retinol and can be purchased over the counter in an uncountable number of products. Retinol also has many skin care and anti-aging benefits but it can take considerably longer to see results compared to prescription retinoids.
There also are fewer side effects that cause milder if any irritation or sensitivity. Many doctors recommend using retinol products first to see how well they are tolerated before trying the stronger versions.
WHICH ONE?
Those dealing with severe acne or psoriasis or want to make quick work of wrinkles and sunspots should speak to a dermatologist for prescription retinoid recommendations. Those who are pregnant or have conditions like eczema or rosacea should check with their doctor before using any retinoid.
You love the sensation of being unwound and pampered during an excellent massage, so much so you may not have ever thought it could get any better.
You’ll be happy to know that adding the power of essential oil to the experience can take your session to the stratosphere.
Many people are amazed at how inhaling certain aromas while being rubbed and kneaded can reach even further into their brain to transform their mindset, clear out any stressors and leave them generally blissed-out.
Aromatherapy massage is a popular option offered by massage therapists at spas and other venues, who select time-honored essential oils to use during your session according to your needs and preferences.
These powerful substances provide another dimension of relaxation and healing by sending signals to your limbic system through the olfactory receptors in your nose, as well as being absorbed through the pores of your skin.
Essential oils can be incorporated into any form of massage within a carrier oil or lotion and through a diffuser releasing molecules into the air — they should not be applied in undiluted form to the surface of your skin as they can cause severe irritation. And, they should never be ingested.
Most people don’t experience any negative side effects from aromatherapy massage, but those who are pregnant, have respiratory conditions or allergies to certain essential oils should check with their physician beforehand.
These plant-based oils are used to achieve varied results and contribute to the benefits you can receive from aromatherapy:
PAIN REDUCTION
Massage of all forms has been used to relieve muscle soreness for thousands of years by reducing tension and stimulating the release of endorphins and other hormones that counteract the pain signals we are receiving.
Many essential oils can offer further relief, including eucalyptus, marjoram, rosemary and peppermint.
IMMUNE FUNCTION BOOST
Massage by itself often targets your lymph nodes and circulation system to ensure your germ-fighting cells are streaming throughout your body, and some essential oils bring specific healing properties of their own, such as the antibiotic properties of tea tree, oregano and bergamot oil.
CALMING STRESS AND ANXIETY
The stress-busting power of massage is what put it on the map and is what draws most clients back to the table as either a primary or secondary reason. Many essential oils are celebrated for their ability to calm the mind including lavender, jasmine, frankincense and coriander.
MOOD ENHANCEMENT
Aromatherapy massage also is renowned for relieving depression and boosting mood. The power of human touch is unrivaled for offering comfort, support and pleasure. Several essential oils have a history of making us at least momentarily happier, including ylang ylang, rose, rosemary and sandalwood.
AIDING DIGESTION
Abdominal massage is an option to reduce digestive ills including bloating, constipation, acid reflux and IBS (though it should not be done while you’re experiencing IBS symptoms). Ginger, fennel, coriander and anise are among the essential oils most often used for reducing digestive upset.

Tailor KITCHEN ISLANDS
TO YOUR STYLE
by Blake HerzogIslands are now an expected feature for home kitchens, especially luxurious ones. But as essential as they can be for food preparation, socializing and storage, the boxy, rectangular structure they typically take may not be ideal for your personal use or aesthetics.
These features can be shaped by designers, builders and artists to
fit a variety of scenarios and floor plans, giving you the flexibility to create your dream kitchen to fit your style and your culinary aspirations. You get to choose exactly how you want them to anchor your room.
Read on for some concepts that may give you exactly what you are looking for.
• Portability — Not all luxury kitchens have a lot of square footage, especially when the homeowners prefer to leave the cooking to pros in restaurants and elsewhere.
In these cases a kitchen cart can be the optimal solution, ready to help you throw together a meal when you need it but also capable of being wheeled out to serve drinks, providing extra space for any type of project or slinking out of sight whenever it gets in the way.
• Pieces — If you don’t like the thought of a large kitchen island obscuring the view of your statement refrigerator or range or not being able to take the quickest path to your appliances when you’re in a hurry, you can split your island in two.
This also makes it easier to create delineated spaces for food preparation versus consumption. And if you
really love large kitchen islands you can have two to handle these dual purposes while adding storage space.
• Angled — When you’re seeking variety and texture or a more accessible cooking space you can have your island built with angled sections, giving you a “notch” to work within and a shape that creates better flow with an irregularly shaped kitchen. You also can reduce your costs by ordering nonstandard sizes of marble or quartzite slabs for your island’s countertop.
• Oval — Create visual interest without sacrificing functionality with an island that’s rounded on both ends. This can yield additional seating capability as well as a softer image in line with many of today’s design trends.
• Surface — If you want to make the island your kitchen centerpiece but it’s a little undersized for that role, you can extend the countertop surface to the floor, “waterfall” style, on one or both sides to give it the presence and panache to make for a compelling statement element.
• Sculpted — If you don’t need much additional storage from your island, consider its potential as an artful object with ample counter space and an elegant base, carved from stone or wood to add a breathtaking flourish to your home.
• Fits to a T — To create defined areas for cooking and eating without splitting them up try a T-shaped element, which will more than likely work best with the top of the “T” positioned close to the other appliances as a work area next to a table for serving meals or snacks.
CABIN GETS MODERN REMAKE
by Earth & ImagesAfter raising a family and recently retiring, the owner of this home enlisted the help of Earth & Images to modernize his 3,200-squarefoot dark, dated Flagstaff cabin. The goal was to update and brighten the interiors with the use of clean, tailored lines. The walls were repainted to a soft white hue and medium-toned hardwood floors were added throughout the home to complement the existing tongue and groove on the ceilings.
A noteworthy space in this threebedroom, 3.5-bath home is the living room that features a resurfaced stone fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing distinctive views of the surrounding golf course.
A striking staircase leading to the guest rooms and office on the second floor was updated with exposed black metal railings to allow for a clear view to the upper level.
The kitchen, outfitted with panelready KitchenAid appliances and custom glass-front cabinetry, overlooks the breakfast room where the owners repurposed dining chairs surround a solid white oak table. The home now functions as the gathering grounds for the owner’s family and a sanctuary from the summer heat.

Consider Building or Upgrading
TO A SUSTAINABLE HOME
Whether you are building your dream home or upgrading your existing home, sustainability should be one of your top priorities.
A sustainable home efficiently uses resources, energy and materials to reduce your environmental footprint.
When building from scratch, consider the direction the home is facing, with the largest surface areas east and west to keep internal temperatures stable and south-facing windows to increase natural light. South-facing is also optimal for solar panels.
Whether you are upgrading or building, here are a few things to consider:
RECYCLED MATERIALS
Recycled building materials reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional materials, which use more resources and energy when created and end up in landfills.
Consider using reclaimed wood or brick, rubber slate or recycled asphalt shingles and recycled glass. If recycled materials aren’t available, opt for locally sourced and recyclable materials.
ENERGY-EFFICIENT DOORS & WINDOWS
In sustainable homes, high-performance doors and windows are paramount. Fiberglass doors are best for exterior doors. For windows, Low-E and/ or double-glazed glass is best.
For colder climates, triple-glazed windows retain heat better. Look for Energy Star certified options.
SOLAR PANELS
The sun is a wonderful source of energy, and solar panels coupled with a battery backup system mean energy can be stored to make your home selfsufficient, even during power outages.
Another option is solar panels along with an electricity grid, using solar power when the sun is out and grid power when it’s not.
Solar panels can be relatively easy to install and represent significant long-term savings. Best of all, the cost has gone down significantly thanks to technological advances.
GREY WATER
Grey water, wastewater from showers, bathtubs and laundry, can be redirected into a filtration process to remove such debris as hair, lint and chemical pollutants. Once filtered, grey water can be used for drip irrigation.
INSULATION
A sustainable home should use highquality, high-efficiency insulation. Familiarize yourself with the R value, or the resistance rating, of insulation — the higher the R value, the more insulation.
SMART THERMOSTAT
Smart home technology, especially the smart thermostat, is arguably the most important addition to a sustainable home. Smart thermostats help control overall energy usage by adapting and optimizing heating and cooling.
Additional options include eco-friendly appliances, LED light bulbs, a compost bin and natural household cleaners.
You may want to plant a garden to benefit the environment and your health. Optimize your garden for lowwater usage for the best results.
Creating a sustainable home doesn’t happen overnight. The first step is being aware of the environmental impact of your home and then making wellinformed decisions. Remember, no change is too small, and it’s never too late to get started creating a sustainable environment for you and your family.
Enchanting Guests Outdoor Kitchens
by Chris Darnell, ZebraScapes LandscapingHELP THE HOST WHILE
The pinnacle of luxury in an outdoor space is offering the same amenities one would normally expect indoors. Fire pits replace the warmth of a fireplace, and surrounding seating offers the comforts of a living room.
However, for those reading this issue looking for a taste of luxury, there is no better place to acquire it than with an outdoor kitchen. Both figuratively, and literally, an outdoor kitchen brings exotic tastes and premier hosting capability right to your backyard. Perhaps there is the consideration of what to add next.
Imagine a luxury backyard that already possesses an expansive patio, a pool and beautiful garden. It can be hard to see the value in simply adding aesthetic installations. Instead, adding a functional outdoor living amenity like an outdoor kitchen is the way to go. Rather than trying to host outdoors while running inside to check the meat thermometer, you can keep both activities in the same location.
Additionally, outdoor kitchens have become a sought after and trendy amenity for potential homebuyers. They are sure to shoot up the property value, while being an easy sell at an open house. These kitchens can be customized
with all of the desired features, whether that be a full service kitchen or just the essentials. Think about the endless possibilities: fridge, beverage cart, ice machine, cabinets, wine cooler, pizza oven, grill or even a smoker. Even this short list undersells the available options. Beyond the convenience provided by an outdoor kitchen from the perspective of a host or property seller, cooking outside is superior. No more worrying about lingering smells or setting
off the smoke alarms. The result of cooking will be a delicious meal and an easily cleaned space. Not to mention the happy guests keen on their next visit. Maybe it is the family that was over for the holidays, brought closer together with a night spent in a luxury outdoor living space. Cook a meal with the siblings, and taste test it with Dad. Keep the family recipes in the family, for the family, with an outdoor kitchen for your luxury backyard.

ADDING A
Butler’s Pantry
If your idea of a fabulous night is entertaining guests at home, then you may need a butler’s pantry. Of course, you don’t need a butler but the extra space and organization can save time and stress preparing meals and organizing.
A butler’s pantry is a small area typically used for storage, food prep or serving. In a large home this may be separate from the main kitchen or it can be located between the kitchen and dining area.
The term “butler’s pantry” originated in the 18th century when homes added rooms for servants to make final meal preparations, keeping the mess out of sight.
Historically, the butler’s pantry also held the family silver and fine china. Today, butler’s pantries (also called service pantries) are used as a coffee station, wet bar, storage and serving area.
How is this any different than a regular pantry? A butler’s pantry typically has more counter space and cabinetry with a sink and/or refrigerator for prep and storage.
The benefits of a butler’s pantry include the convenience of having everything you need close at hand, saving time. And more importantly, we all know everyone ends up in the kitchen and a butler’s pantry will keep the mess in the pantry where it belongs.
The space also offers added storage. Because it is used to add the finishing touches to a meal, consider adding a microwave, toaster oven and cookware.
And the final convenience is the cleanup. Save your kitchen and use the butler’s pantry for quick clean ups and organization.
When designing a butler’s pantry, make sure to design to impress. It’s likely your guests will pass through it and may see it as you use it.
Consider glass-front cabinets, wine racks and high-end features that mirror the kitchen design for a seamless look. Consider how you will use it and design from there.
A butler’s pantry can be a great addition, especially if you have the extra space. It will cost you, but it can be a great investment.
WITH LIGHT TO
Wash Walls DRAMATIC EFFECT
When you display fine art on your wall the expectation is that people will look at it, but they may not be able to appreciate the color, texture and message that so captivated you — maybe their eyesight isn’t the best or they’re ruminating about their lost golf game or any number of other factors.
A technique known as “wall washing,” in which LED bulbs are mounted on the ceiling and directed toward a nearby wall, can ensure your masterpiece will be fully appreciated.
It can also inject drama and highlight texture, create a spacious feel and, oddly enough, conceal surface flaws when it’s done correctly. All these goals can be achieved with either track lighting, which can be easier to manipulate, or more discreet recessed lighting.
The bulbs are generally positioned about 2 or 3 feet away from the wall. This technique is more effective on light-colored walls than dark, and getting the right angle is key to success.
SPOTLIGHT YOUR ART
Whether you have one impressive object of wall art or several, wall washing is the way to go, but be certain you’re using an amount of light proportional to the piece. Putting too much or too little is bound to leave the viewer overwhelmed or perplexed.
The beam of light should hit the center of the object to be highlighted to give it the proper attention, but be sure to look at any shadows that might be cast onto baskets or sculptures that aren’t completely flat.
ADD BREATHING ROOM
Wall washing is adept at creating the optical illusion of more space, particularly in hallways and other narrow spaces. Indirect light trained on empty or sparsely decorated walls keeps the eye focusing on those surfaces and not the narrowness of the passage.
Softer lighting in particular generates an airy atmosphere that adds visual breadth to the passage by highlighting the expanse of the wall.
WASH OUT ANY BLEMISHES
Lighting a wall from top to bottom from a wide angle highlights the sameness of the surface in a way that obscures any of its details, including cracks, scratches, dents or any other imperfections it may have picked up along the way. This is a great way to handle blemishes that for whatever reason aren’t going to be easy to patch up or camouflage.
BRING OUT THE TEXTURE
When you’re in the opposite position of wanting to emphasize the details and uneven surfaces of a wall because it’s built from bricks, natural stone or another material with inherent character you’ll want to turn to a related lighting technique known as “wall grazing.”
Here the lights are placed closer to the wall and can be mounted either on the ceiling or floor to show contrasts in shapes, colors and materials; it helps highlight the craftsmanship of the people who worked on it.
Feng Shui
Balances
WANCIENT AND MODERN
e don’t have to follow the precepts of ancient Chinese philosophy to organize our homes, but they do guide us in the same direction as many of today’s interior designers and other space planning experts.
The practice of feng shui’s spatial principles is oriented toward making room for qi, or spiritual energy, to flow into and throughout a structure to ensure balance and create new opportunities for growth by removing physical and mental obstacles.
This falls right in line with much of interior design’s focus on creating flow and functionality within and between rooms. So here are a few things you can do to keep your home contemporary by following ancient wisdom.
EMBRACE THE LIGHT
Feng shui values illumination whether it’s from sunlight, candles, fireplaces or modern lighting systems. Maximize natural light by uncovering and regularly cleaning all windows — mirrors can magnify light but make sure they don’t reflect anything on the outside you find unpleasant.
Keep your entryway in particular bright and inviting as your front door symbolizes the pathway for energy to enter your home and your life, as well as affecting your mood as you move into or out of your sanctuary.
ELIMINATE CLUTTER
Disorganization is the enemy of good design and your stray books, papers, toys and devices are symptoms of it, even if you know where to find them. Anything you’re not currently using should be secured in its assigned place so it won’t interfere with the dynamic route that energy takes through your home, whether you’re looking at it from the perspective of qi or the mental effort of looking around it and wondering why you haven’t put it away yet.
PLANTS BRING VITALITY
Live plants are highly valued in feng shui as continuous sources of life energy and are embedded in many current design trends that strive to bring natural elements indoors.
You can never have too many plants at home, but don’t bring more in than you’re able to place in the right conditions and care for; a dead plant will suck vitality out of a room.
