Prescott PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Dennis Herrera Band

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?

Dennis Herrera Band: Since coming to Prescott in 2017, I’ve worked with the best blues musicians that I met through people like Darryl Porras, R.D. Olsen and Scott O’Neal.

I’ve built a good foundation and pretty much continue to work with Robert Church, drummer; Carl Dahlgren and Steve Willis, keyboards; Fred Stark and Mark Winley, bass players; the late Tony DeNapo, saxophonist; Anton Teschner, saxophonist; and Alex Holland, saxophone player.

Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind your band’s name?

Dennis Herrera Band: Back in the early days in the ‘70s, I’ve comeup with catchy band names from time to time but discovered later the band name was already taken. I decided to use my name and keep it original, and no one can use it.

It’s since been registered with BMI, Sound Exchange, CDBaby and other publications.

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience during a show?

Dennis Herrera Band: My music is all genuine, and I do my best to bring feel-good deep blues music and upbeat dancing tunes to connect with the audience. I step off the stage and walk the room around the audience playing, using a wireless system to engage and make eye contact. I dance a little bit with the dancers, but keep in mind I’m not a good dancer.

I share band stories and call out particular individuals thanking them for being there. I talk about songs and where they came from. I make it fun and we’re able to feed off each other’s energy.

The most memorable moment of my career so far?

I would say recording with my friend and mentor, renowned blues guitarist, producer and band leader Anson Funderburgh and the late Lynwood Slim, a friend and outstanding notable award-winning blues vocalist and harmonica player who helped contribute on my second CD Livin’ Life Not Worryin’ .

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?

D ennis Herrera Band: I strive for an unmistakable style, tone and sensibility that incorporates Chicago Blues, Texas Blues with a hint of West Coast Blues. I’m influenced and inspired by blues kings Albert Collins, Lightning Hopkins, Albert King, T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, just to name a few. I am greatly influenced by the great

blues artists when performing and recording.

Prescott NOW : What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?

Dennis Herrera Band: We have played for a very few people to a few thousand people. As long as people are dancing and having fun.

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?

D ennis Herrera Band: Playing live and in Prescott, a vibrant musical community, is always just plain outright fun! Watching folks dance and applaud keeps the band alive and extremely motivated especially when performing new material, which as a matter of fact, we are doing now with the new album I have recorded and released, Dennis Herrera – FOUR .

Prescott Center for the Arts Reborn as The Hazeltine

For 55 years, 208 N. Marina St. was the heart and soul of community theater in Prescott.

Initially gifted to the Prescott Fine Arts Association, the theater was an opportunity for community members to step out of their comfort zone and work in a collaborative environment to produce musicals, dramas, comedies and a variety of programs ranging from Reader’s Theatre to Teen Summer Stock to Family Theatre programs.

Most recently known as Suze’s Prescott Center for the Arts, the group was faced with an unsustainable financial situation and stopped productions this past summer.

For several months, a group of local arts leaders, business owners and community members came

together with a common mission: “To save the historic facilities and preserve Community Theatre in Prescott for generations to come.”

In November with the financial backing of 4th Wall Productions, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that shares that vision, Prescott’s revived community theatre became a reality. The property has been renamed The Hazeltine in honor of Norma Hazeltine, who originally purchased and gifted the historic downtown church and rectory to the community in 1968. A third building featuring a black box theater opened on the campus in 2023.

During January the group will hold its first “Coffee with the Crew” event inviting the public to meet the 4th Wall team. It also hopes to complete conversion of the Main Stage theater back to a seating

capacity of 198, after it was slashed to 98 seats during the pandemic.

Fundraisers will continue throughout the month, including the sale of $20 biscotti boxes from board chairman Barry Barbe’s El Gato Azul restaurant at stores around town.

Feb. 5 will see the opening of The Hazeltine’s first full stage production — Putting it Together, a Tony-winning musical featuring the songs of Stephen Sondheim. Directed by veteran Prescott director Don Langford, the five-member cast takes the audience through the challenges, trials, and anticipation of putting on a theatrical production.

For more information on upcoming events, tickets, volunteer opportunities and fundraisers visit www.the-hazeltine.com and on Facebook – 4th Wall Productions.

Concert: 3 p.m.

Ruth Street Theater

1050 Ruth St.

Prescott

Arizona Philharmonic presents manos percussion, bringing global rhythms to the stage Jan. 12, at the Ruth Street Theater.

Classical Meets Creativity: manos percussion Brings Global Rhythms to Prescott

Arizona Philharmonic principal timpanist Maria Flurry, always brings a vibrant party to the stage, and this manos percussion performance Sunday, Jan. 12 is sure to delight and surprise. Partnering with award-winning Bensen Kwan on steel pan (a participant in the Panorama Semi-Finals Competition in Trinidad/Tobago) and Joshua Ferrell on percussion (a Master’s Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas in Denton), they will play 37 instruments, including water, on their way through a dynamic range of material from jazz to Basque to calypso and Bach. “We are all classically trained musicians, unleashing our creative sides to explore this rich collaboration. For both your intellect and your inner child, this is a concert to look forward to,” commented Flurry.

This virtuosic round-the-world journey embraces everything from the grooves of Afro-Cuban rhythms to the sublime melancholy of Debussy — a dynamic exploration of the wealth of musical possibilities percussion offers. manos will be accompanied by three members of Banda Latino Caribeña, a popular Latin band from Flagstaff, on a number of danceworthy pieces as well. The performance also includes a unique atmospheric piece played entirely on flower pots by manos and joined by Prescott Unified School District band students, mentored and directed by Peter Ferry. Ferry is a world-class percussion soloist based in Phoenix, dedicated to creating arresting musical experiences for audiences around the world. “There will be more water and unexpected musical pieces included, such as a farce in a café involving water bottles,” added Flurry.

Grammy-Winning Fiddler Delivered a Down-Home Holiday

Three-time Grammy award winner Mark O’Connor performed An Appalachian Christmas in December at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center, on Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus.

The show featured O’Connor, alongside his wife and award-winning fiddler Maggie O’Connor, delivering fresh arrangements of Christmas classics — both vocal and instrumental. It featured songs that vividly recalled O’Connor’s life and childhood in Appalachia.

O’Connor, who also has won seven Country Music Association awards, as well as multiple national fiddle, guitar and mandolin titles, is a leading performer and educator in contemporary and classical string music. He began his creative journey at the feet of American fiddling legend Benny Thomasson and iconic French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli.

As an Appalachian-born violin prodigy, Mark O’Connor used to cherish the Christmas holidays because it gave him a chance to stay home and jam with local musicians, performing traditional Christmas music and folk tunes that celebrated the simple life they all shared.

In his teens, O’Connor performed for President Reagan at the White House. Over time, he melded his diverse influences into a new American classical music, continuing his vision of an American School of String Playing.

“Mark O’Connor’s unfinished trajectory, from largely self-taught fiddle player to concert-hall virtuoso and classical composer, is already one of the most spectacular journeys in recent American music.”

—New York Times

“Mark is so facile with his instrument and so completely on top of it. He’s really one in a million. We won’t see a lot more like him in this generation.”

—James Taylor

In addition to the holiday concert with the performer whom Vince Gill called, “the best musician on the planet,” the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center hosted an after-show Dessert Social with Mark and Maggie O’Connor.

Visitors experienced a blend of history and holiday cheer as Living History interpreters brought Prescott’s storied past to life within the museum’s historic buildings. A special appearance by Father Christmas delighted guests of all ages.

Attendees could tap into their creative spirits with Victorianinspired Christmas crafts. Projects included hand-crafted wreaths and 3D snowflakes, among other holiday decorations.

The Phoenix Pioneer Band enlivened the event.

“This event truly brings back the magic of Christmas for children and adults,” Stuart Rosebrook, Executive Director of the Museum, said.

The Museum Store, nestled within the elegant Bashford House, provided shoppers with an extensive array of gifts from books on Arizona history to handmade jewelry to traditional craft kits, there was something for everyone to complete their holiday shopping list.

Not One, but Two Parades Marched in Arizona’s Christmas City

Prescott became a place where sugar plums danced, reindeers flew and lots of marching was going on during its traditional Christmas celebrations.

First up was the Holiday Light Parade & Bonfire Festival, which returned for its 27th year on Nov. 20. The nighttime downtown parade — of course led by Ol’ St. Nick himself — featured more than 40 lighted floats and music from school marching bands. It was followed by the Bonfire Festival at Mile High Middle School (where the parade down Cortez Street ended) and included music, visits with Santa and reindeer games for the kids.

Attendees also could get a much closer look at the illuminated floats. Prescott High and Chino Valley High schools marching bands performed. This event was hosted by the Prescott Downtown Partnership and sponsored by Desert Financial Credit Union, Arizona Public Service, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Experience Prescott Office of Tourism.

During the day Dec. 7, the second and older parade — the 42nd annual Christmas Parade — strutted its stuff in the heart of downtown Prescott. The 2024 theme was Heroes of the Holiday and the parade had 130 entries, making it the largest parade in Prescott so far.

After the parade, kids met with Santa before the evening’s 70th annual Courthouse Lighting Ceremony.

Live Christmas music kicked off the evening, creating a festive backdrop as the Courthouse and more than 80 glowing trees surrounding the Plaza were

illuminated with more than a million LED lights. A fireworks display got plenty of ooohs and aaahs.

Prescott was proud to be recognized by Newsweek last year as one of the Top 10 Best Christmas Towns in the country.

Prescott was officially designated as Arizona’s Christmas City in 1989 because the city had long been known for its festive holiday events. In 2022, the city of Prescott and Prescott Chamber of Commerce Foundation formed the official Arizona Christmas City Organization. This organization brought the city’s main holiday events together under one umbrella, enabling event organizers to collaborate on marketing, fundraising, and sponsorship assistance.

The Courthouse Lighting dates back to 1954, when local organizations, including the Rotary Club and Prescott Elks Lodge No. 330 collaborated to create the first Christmas display on the Courthouse Plaza.

By 1955, inspired by Denver’s Civic Center, decorations expanded to include the Courthouse itself, with red foil, lights and a neon Season’s Greetings sign. Through the years, support from the community drove the event to grow into the dazzling display it is today, boasting some of

the most elaborate decorations in the region.

All the Arizona Christmas City Events are presented by Desert Financial Credit Union, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Findlay Toyota, Friends of the Jersey Lilly and the City of Prescott. Additional support provided by ZebraScapes, Ability Remodeling, Cemex, Culver’s of Prescott, Pioneer Title, Springhill Suites, Residence Inn, C4th Home Improvement, APS, NAPA, R & R Auto & Truck Parts, Fancy That!, Bucky’s Casino, Dignity Health, Yavapai Casino, Matt’s Saloon, Lighthouse Coffee Company, The Daily Courier, Blind Brothers Arizona, Black Arrow Native American Jewelry & Art, KPPV106.7FM, KDDL94.3FM, JUAN107.1FM, JACK94.7FM, KQNA1130AM, American Mailer, Hilton Garden Inn, UP2 Productions, Your Home First Magazine, Sparklight Advertising, Torme, El Gato Azul, Prescott LIVING, Prescott NOW, Magic99.1FM, KAFF92.9FM, Hope Arizona Shine 103.9FM, The Mountain 93.9FM, Fun Oldies 1450AM, Prescott Woman Magazine, Bill’s Pizza, Red White & Brew , Hotel St. Michael, Barrett Propane, Hair Station 105, FooteWork Auto License & Title, Quad Cities Business News, and Flagstaff Business News.

The Irish Tenors Conjured Christmas from the Emerald Isle

Three of Ireland’s greatest tenors brought their voices together in The Irish Tenors: A Family Christmas on Dec. 19 in the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus.

The Irish Tenors have been the acknowledged Celtic music kings since they burst upon the scene with an Irish television special in 1998. Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan and Declan Kelly captured the hearts of their home country, and then

the world, with soaring vocals and layered harmonies that brought the power and the poignancy of Irish culture to life.

Their breakthrough led to an American TV special, Live from Ellis Island hosted by Martin Sheen, and a 26-year love affair with the United States.

A generation later, the talented trio is still going strong. With 10 bestselling CDs to their credit, The Irish Tenors have filled America’s most

prestigious venues — Carnegie Hall, Radio City, Madison Square Garden and The Hollywood Bowl.

The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center celebrated the Irish Tenors with a special, Celticthemed pre-show dinner on the PAC Mezzanine where Irish stew with lamb, carrots and potatoes; an Irish Pub salad of lettuce, watercress and picked beets; and a dessert of Guinness chocolate cake was served.

Real Estate in 2025: Embrace Change, New Opportunities

courtesy of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®

As 2025 begins, the real estate landscape is poised for significant transformations, fueled by a blend of economic factors, a new government and evolving buyer preferences. For buyers, sellers and investors, adapting to these shifts will be essential for success in the upcoming market.

One of the most prominent trends for 2025 is the focus on affordability. Housing affordability remains a primary concern for buyers as interest rates are expected to stabilize but remain higher than in previous decades. For many, this may mean continuing to rent or looking for smaller, more cost-effective properties.

In response, developers are beginning to prioritize smaller homes and multifamily housing units in urban and suburban markets to meet the demands of budget-conscious buyers. This trend is likely to create more opportunities for first-time buyers who have been priced out of the market in recent years.

Sustainability also will continue to play a crucial role in real estate throughout 2025. Green building practices, eco-friendly features and sustainable materials no longer are just selling points — they are becoming essential, or required.

Buyers are increasingly considering long-term energy savings and environmental impact when choosing homes. Solar panel installations, energyefficient insulation and smart home technology that optimizes energy use are expected to become even more common, particularly in new developments.

Municipal regulations are also pushing this shift, with several regions implementing more stringent environmental standards for new constructions.

The demographic shifts will continue to influence market dynamics, with younger generations beginning to the enter the housing market. Many of these younger

buyers are changing the narrative, with their preferences shifting to suburban areas with access to green spaces that are compatible with remote work opposed to the urban areas that were once the most desirable and affordable.

This trend may result in a continued push away from highdensity urban areas, with more families and professionals prioritizing lifestyle quality over proximity to major business centers. Despite the average age of first-time homebuyers going up, more potential buyers with shifting preferences will continue to enter the market.

In 2025, those who remain adaptable and informed will find new opportunities. By using a REALTOR® that understands trends in affordability and sustainability and is considerate of your lifestyle preferences, potential buyers, sellers and investors can position themselves for success in the evolving real estate market.

One Unique Ranch

Yavapai County is ranch country, and one of the most distinctive is the Quarter Circle V Bar — the Orme Ranch — on almost 27,000 acres about 25 miles south of Prescott, where they run between 450 and 500 cows and calves.

It’s not only a ranch in its most classic sense, but also an internationally known boarding high school for about 100 domestic and international students. All students have an opportunity to enroll in the school’s horsemanship program, as well as assist in ranch work.

The Quarter Circle V Bar can truly be called a “family operation.” Ownership is in the hands of Paul Orme, a member of the fourth generation of Ormes to operate the ranch. The patriarch was John Pinkley Orme who farmed the Phoenix Valley near the present site of the Phoenix Country Club,

in the late 19th century. One of the founders of the Salt River Project Water Users Association, he was also its first president.

His son “Chick” in 1929 continued the ranching tradition by purchasing 1,500 acres of deeded land along Ash Creek, which was coupled to a 20,000-acre Forest Service permit and another of 5,000 acres on a state permit. This comprises the Quarter Circle V Bar today. Chick also represented Yavapai County as a state senator for eight years.

Forced to home school their children due to the remoteness of the ranch, the Ormes were soon asked by neighboring ranchers if their children could also be educated by the family. Charlie, one of Chick’s sons, ran the boarding school for 42 years. Young people received not just a traditional

education, but one that included the development of a sense of responsibility, accomplishing the many chores that comprise ranch living.

Recently the Ormes made a commitment to perpetuate agricultural and wildlife values by placing over 900 acres in a conservation easement trust.

This land would be ripe for commercial development, but under the terms of the trust, administered by the Central Arizona Land Trust, “it will permanently conserve historic ranch lands for sustainable agricultural uses preventing development, while ensuring protection of land and water resources along Ash Creek and in the Arizona central highlands.”

The Western Heritage Center, 156 S. Montezuma St. is a repository of all things western. Admission is free.

American Legion Post No. 140, Findlay Subaru Prescott Celebrate Success

Jerome S. Cranke Prescott Valley American Legion Post No. 140 in partnership with Findlay Subaru Prescott celebrated their car raffle fundraiser in November with the grand prize giveaway to Kelly and Judy Ivicek.

The Iviceks expressed their excitement and gratitude upon winning the raffle, and at their own expense chose to upgrade their prize to a brand-new 2025 Subaru Ascent.

This fundraiser was organized to support local veterans, and the overwhelming community participation was heartwarming.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who purchased raffle tickets and contributed to this noble cause. There were 304 people who participated raising $42,332 that will

be used to support programs that benefit our local veterans.

Findlay Subaru Prescott contributed an additional $10,000. The community’s generosity helps American Legion to continue to provide essential services and support to local veterans like job transition support, resources to reduce suicide and providing assistance to combat homelessness.

“This event exemplifies the incredible spirit of our community,” says Kara Hartman, Marketing Director at Findlay Subaru Prescott. “We are honored to collaborate with American Legion Post No. 140 to support our veterans and make a meaningful impact.”

Brantley Gilbert: The Tattoos Tour 2025

Brantley Gilbert is bringing The Tattoos Tour 2025 to Findlay Toyota Center March 7. Special guests include Travis Denning and Austin Snell. Tickets start at $25 plus applicable fees

Tickets are available at www.FindlayToyotaCenter.com or Ticketmaster.com.

The multi-platinum country-rock trailblazer, who headlined a performance for 118,000 fans in downtown Nashville for the World’s Largest Album Release Party, is taking his seventh studio album from coast-to-coast across Northern America.

“My hope is that with tickets starting at $25, people can step away from everyday stresses and enjoy themselves — whether it’s making it a fun evening with the family or giving mom and dad the chance to hire a babysitter and have a night out just for them,” Gilbert says. “Music has

always been about bringing people together and offering a break from the grind, even if it’s just for a few hours.”

As one of the godfathers of country’s modern rockand-rap edge, Gilbert knows life has a way of leaving a mark. With his seventh studio album, Tattoos, the Georgia native chooses to embrace it — inspired by the idea that his tattoos tell a story, just like his songs. And just like his songs, he’ll never hide the truth they reveal.

Gilbert has been mining the timeless values of hardworking dedication, high-octane thrills and humble faith since his 2009 debut, A Modern Day Prodigal Son, creating a chart-topping grit-and-grace fusion that helped set the stage for today’s genre-blending format.

He has toured alongside everyone from Willie Nelson and Toby Keith to Kenny Chesney, Nickelback and more. For more information, visit www.brantleygilbert.com
