Fun for all: Arizona Black Heritage Music Experience 2022
F
eb. 18-19 will be all about good music, good vibes and good food for the biggest musical lineup to ever hit the City of Maricopa. In conjunction with Black History Month, Maricopa AZ Events will be putting on The Black Heritage Music Experience at Copper Sky Recreational Park featuring 11 artists, including platinum recording artist Adina Howard, Chico DeBarge and Soul-Blues artist, Willie Clayton. Howard will be returning to the city where she once lived. “Arizona is my adopted home state,” Howard says. “I graduated from Dobson High, so it’s always nice to come back. I am looking forward to being back in Maricopa. I truly enjoyed living there.”
Chico DeBarge
Willie Clayton
The two-day event will have something for jazz lovers with saxophonists Harlan Jefferson and Neaman Lyles. For a gospel tribute, the legendary Willie Rogers, who is considered to be up there with Sam Cooke for his soulful crooning of favorite church renditions, also will be performing. The Baby Boomer generation will be entertained by the Intruders and the group Enchantment, who are best known for their smash hits “Gloria,” “Sunshine,” and “It’s You that I Need.” Also in the lineup is American Funk and R&B group Raydio, formed in 1977 with Ray Parker Jr., Vincent Bonham, Jerry Knight and Arnell Carmichael. Rounding out the festival will be one of Arizona’s favorite bluesman Tommy Dukes. It is a bring-your-own-chair or blanket event and also your own cooler of snacks. There will be food trucks, though, in case you want something hot. Tickets are on sale — they can be found on eventbrite.com, with a single day pass at $35 and a two-day pass to see everyone $50. At the gate, tickets will be $65. The organizer and Howard say they hope everyone comes to listen to the all-star artists and learn a little more about the history and impact of the music.
Adina Howard
“It's important to give credit where credit is due,” Howard says. “We are the foundation of American music. Without the contributions of African Americans, genres like Rock & Roll, Jazz, Funk, HipHop and Gospel wouldn’t exist.”
