A Host of Insights Appear in Local Housing Data
Homeowners in the Quad Cities continue to gain equity while inventory concerns remain a factor, according to the housing report released in August by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).
The median sold price across the Quad Cities region increased 1% in July compared to this time last year, holding steady at $475,000. The largest gains were seen in Chino Valley, with an increase of 12.8% representing a median sold price of $440,000.
Prescott, Prescott Valley and Dewey-Humboldt, though limited to single-digit increases, all managed to show gains in home valuations.
Overall, the year-to-date increase in median sold prices in Prescott and the surrounding areas from January through July of this year registered a 2.5% increase in median sold price, finishing the month at $465,000.
Months of inventory, which remains a
national issue, rose by 25.8% year-overyear to reflect a total of 3.9 months of inventory available in the housing market throughout the Quad Cities region for July.
Dewey-Humboldt showed the strongest gains in this category with 5.2 total months of inventory, followed by Prescott (4.1) and Prescott Valley (2.7). Chino Valley’s available inventory showed a slight decrease of 7.4% from 2.7 to 2.5 months of inventory in total.
“Our local market remains fairly robust compared to what we’re seeing nationally, but all REALTORS® know that we need to continue adding new listings to accommodate the influx of competitive buyers who continue to find out what a wonderful place to live our community is,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President.
New listings have declined by double digits across the Quad Cities from July 2022, as well as from
January of this year to the present.
“The only way to ensure our months of inventory remain in a healthy range is for homeowners to continue reaching out to a trusted, local REALTOR® who can guide them through the selling process and help them maximize those gains to put toward their next dream home,” Humphrey added.
The detailed reports are available here: https://dashboards. domusanalytics.com/v/ PrescottInfographic and https:// dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographicArea.
Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.

In 2020, Jana was inducted into the prestigious Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame, which recognizes women natives or residents of Arizona for their significant achievements or statewide contributions.
We all know about the bandits and the bad boys, the gunfighters and goons, but not the women who held it all together with grit and spit. The reality is plain: there never would have been a settled West without the women – Native and Mexican women here first; Black and White women who followed – all bravely staking their lives in these unknown badlands. But they’ve never gotten their due.

The setting is in a Denver, Colorado jail cell, where Bat Masterson and Governor Frederick W. Pitkin have put Doc in protective custody for a few hours. This is after Doc and the Earps have left Arizona for Colorado. Unfortunately for Doc, a few hours have turned into a few days. To say the least, Doc is not very happy about this. He is angry with the jailor, who is ignoring his needs. Out of boredom and frustration, Doc begins bantering with the other prisoners. You, the audience are the other prisoners.

Sky Conwell: We started playing nothing but rockabilly and surf music. We played Pipeline, Miserlou, Rock Around the Clock, and Big River at almost every gig.
But we have kind of evolved. We still play fun energetic music, but we have expanded to include a lot
of classic rock, traditional country, golden oldies and other types of high energy familiar, danceable songs. Now we will mix in a little CCR and Tom Petty with our regular Ventures and Carl Perkins.
The audience inspires us. I just want to play what I feel like the audience wants to hear. At most places we play, the audience wants to hear fun, upbeat familiar songs so that they can sing along and dance.
But as far as the rockabilly and surf influence? I was raised on good country music, but I remember one summer day I discovered my mother’s Elvis’ records. A year later, as I was
learning to play electric guitar, I was fascinated by the super deluxe reverb sound of the twangy surf guitar bands. I wanted to create music like that!
Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
Sky Conwell: There is so much amazing talent here. I truly believe the more talented players we have, the better the scene is.
It is important to have fun. The Pop Rocks are not the most talented band in Prescott, but we always have SO much fun with each other, with the music and with the audience.

Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
Sky Conwell: Years ago I had a regular Monday evening solo gig. One time nobody showed up. The smallest audience I’ve played for was an audience of zero. I still played the gig, though, hoping that “If you play they will come.”
For a few consecutive years The Pop Rocks played at the annual Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion. The last time we played they gave us a very nice time — late afternoon on Saturday. There were probably about three to four thousand people, and they had us loud enough to be heard throughout the entire festival.
Prescott Now: Where do you find your inspiration for your songwriting, performances?
Sky Conwell: When I first began writing songs I wrote to entertain. I wrote a lot of funny songs, novelty songs, clever idea songs, silly songs, etc.
As I matured, my songs, too. I became honest and vulnerable, and it came out in the songs. I get inspired by the greats. My favorite songwriters are Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.
I get inspired when seeing an amazing band. (This year) I went with my girl to Viva Las Vegas, the biggest rockabilly festival in the world. I was inspired watching Deke Dickerson and his many projects.

Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?
Sky Conwell: I moved to Prescott Valley to get out of Phoenix. When I got divorced in 2013, I moved to Prescott to be close to the music scene. I live downtown a block and a half away from Whiskey River Tavern.

Canyon Distributing (Coors Banquet) Partner with The Eric Marsh Foundation and the Prescott Community to Support Lives of Wildland Firefighters and Their Families in Yavapai County
Prescott, AZ. (August 1, 2023) - Canyon Distributing, a Coors Banquet distributor, is proud to announce their partnership with The Eric Marsh Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the lives of wildland firefighters and their families in Yavapai County. This collaboration aims to provide crucial assistance, resources, and support to the brave individuals who risk their lives to protect our communities and natural landscapes.
The Granite Mountain Hotshots, a 20-man wildfire fighting crew, left an indelible mark on the world. On June 30, 2013, 19 members of the crew tragically lost their lives while battling a fire near Yarnell. The Eric Marsh Foundation was established to honor their mission and legacy by providing monetary support to wildland firefighters and
their families. Canyon Distributing, in conjunction with The Eric Marsh Foundation, have identified key areas where their partnership can make a significant difference. The first being educating the public about the importance of wildland firefighting and the cause that The Eric Marsh Foundation is fighting for. "We must continue to recognize the efforts of our wildland firefighters and the sacrifices they make to keep our community safe," shares Amanda Marsh, widow of Eric Marsh and founder of the Eric Marsh Foundation. "We are proud to have Canyon Distributing as a partner to bring awareness to our cause."
Another important aspect of this collaboration with The Eric Marsh Foundation will be about actively engaging local communities in Yavapai County. Participating bars
and restaurants in the area will join the cause by offering patrons the opportunity to make direct donations to the foundation by purchasing Coors Banquet. Canyon Distributing will also contribute $1 from every purchase of a Coors Banquet case to the Eric Marsh Foundation from their local clients. Direct donations to The Eric Marsh Foundation can also be made online. The campaign will run during the fire season through September.
To contribute and learn more about the Eric Marsh Foundation, visit the donation page at https:// ericmarshfoundation.org/pages/donate.

YC Renames PAC to Honor Local Philanthropists
For 46 years, Jim and Linda Lee have worked to develop and enrich Prescott’s profile as a center for artistic and scholarly achievement in Northern Arizona. On June 28, Yavapai College honored their generosity by etching their names into the profile of the community they have supported for so long.
Yavapai College officially renamed its iconic performance hall The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center.
“Today we celebrate another act of philanthropy from Jim and Linda that will impact the lives of countless people,” Yavapai College President Dr. Lisa Rhine said, citing the establishment of the Jim and Linda Lee Endowment for the Performing Arts at Yavapai College.
“Gifts of this nature do much more than put a name on a building. They allow us to provide sustainable support for the performing arts. They allow us to continue to bring top-
tier talent to our region and to fund operations of Northern Arizona’s premiere arts entertainment venue.”
College officials honored the Lees, whose work creating and developing upscale residential and commercial developments in Prescott has added to the area’s economic growth and prosperity.
Dr. Craig Ralston, YC’s Performing Arts Director of Programming & Development, tracked a legacy that includes local landmarks like The Ranch at Prescott, the Prescott Gateway Mall and Touchmark, as well as benevolent ventures like the Yavapai Symphony, the Jim & Linda Lee Planetarium at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and decades of support for Yavapai College.
“We now celebrate the Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center. It ensures that the arts at YC, and in Yavapai County, continue to grow to future generations,” Ralston said.
The 1,064-seat performing arts center is Northern Arizona’s largest entertainment venue; home of YC’s Performing Arts Department, training the next generation of actors, singers, musicians, and technical theater professionals; and home to the College’s Prescott Campus Art Gallery.
A favorite of local audiences, the venue has offered more than 30 years of touring artists, local talent, symphonies, festivals, motion pictures and local events.
The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center is at 1100 E. Sheldon St., on the Yavapai College Prescott Campus. The ticket office is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. For reservations or more event information, call 928. 776.2000 or visit: www.ycpac.com.

Deciphering Dyslexia at Prescott Public Library
One Saturday morning, a mom approached the Youth Desk at Prescott Public Library and shared that her son had been diagnosed with dyslexia. Individuals with dyslexia often have difficulty learning and processing information; reading or spelling might be challenging.
Dyslexics are statistically more likely to excel in creative problemsolving tasks and connect well with others— indispensable skills that are not always recognized or valued in school or workplace environments. Frustrated, this mom wanted to find books that her son could read. Although the children’s area had a handful of books with dyslexic characters and many educational books about dyslexia, there was a gap in our collection.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month!
Youth Services committed to advocating for youth with dyslexia. Our goal was to learn about dyslexia and apply what we learned to our collection, programming, and displays. Initially, we purchased dyslexia reading guides- available for free at the Youth Desk. The guides are inch-wide strips of plastic with a transparent colored strip in the middle. They help readers focus on one line of text at a time— something that often challenges those with dyslexia.
Subsequently, we created new subject tracings (dyslexia friendly and dyslexia adapted) in our Yavapai Library Network catalog to help patrons narrow their searches for dyslexia friendly media. The Prescott Public Library website hosts
Library cards are passports to knowledge and imagination, and they are free! Through access to technology, online resources, and educational programs, libraries provide people of all ages with the opportunity to pursue their dreams and passions.
How do you get a card? It’s simple.
• Check out details and online application here: https://www. prescottlibrary.info/services/library-cards-accounts/library-cards/
• Visit the Check Out Desk on the 2nd floor of the library with a photo ID and proof of residency.
• A parent or guardian needs to accompany anyone under 16 to get a card. Even babies can have their own card!

a new Dyslexia Friendly Books list, as well.
This inclusive mindset extends to our early literacy youth programming. For example, Youth Services librarians utilize story times to introduce multi-sensory interpretive strategies that benefit newly independent readers.
Our shelf labels will soon be updated with pictograms— images—to simplify the process of searching for books.
All community members benefit from accommodations that especially ease the library experience of those with dyslexia. We are still learning how to make our resources more inclusive and welcome feedback from patrons.

Locals Tell “Stories That Matter” at the Elks Performing Arts Center on Oct. 8
AZ Wordsmith, the group behind the monthly “Prose Open Mic at the Elks” sessions where Greater Prescott writers read their stories aloud to each other is launching a new program next month where storytellers step out from behind their manuscripts as they bring their tales to life.
AZ Wordsmith’s “Stories That Matter” will debut Oct. 8 at the Elks Performing Arts Center, providing a showcase for locals to spin their own yarn in front of an audience after learning the ropes from a coach with stage experience.
Lee Reeves, one of three local writers who founded AZ Wordsmith in 2019, said, “We feel that stories are kind of a glue for a community. They connect people,” an ethos that runs through both events.
She likened the impact the stories could have to learning about your peers when beginning a new class: “You look around and you don’t do it intentionally, but you judge people, and you think you know what they’re like. And then they tell a story about themselves and you’re a little shaken that you were maybe so off, because that story shows them in a much more complex, deeper way.”
The storytellers to be featured in “Stories That Matter” were selected after submitting their ideas to a “pitch line” at 928.351.7899, which is open for people to leave their pitches for future events. They have each been paired with a coach to aid them with stage and story presentation to polish their performances. “We’re going to work with people to tell their stories, not read them, and we’re going to help curate them in a way that’s going to be pleasing and impactful to an audience,” Reeves said.
Each event will have its own story theme, with the Oct. 8 show focusing on “Life Changes.” The timing of future editions will be determined afterward.

Willow Lake Loop ROLL WITH HIGHS, LOWS OF
by Blake Herzog
Just like Willow Lake, its loop trail gives users the gamut of terrain and tests to choose from.
The majority of its path runs on relatively flat land, giving you lots of time to admire the lake and get some good distance in, about two-thirds of the 5.7-mile route. You see grassy meadows perfect for picnicking, marshy areas supporting flocks of geese and ducks, and the unfettered joys found at the Willow Lake Dog Park.
The eastern third of the loop is full-on Granite Dells, pulling you along ups and downs as you follow those famous white dots over granite slickrock and past
massive boulders. They part to reveal the lake’s surface and Granite Mountain in the distance to the west and many, many more cliffs and boulders to the east.
Here you’ll be squeezing through crevices that widen into stellar vistas, crossing a red footbridge helping you over a particularly wide crevice and climbing 75 steps to reach the top of a rock formation and then climb another ridge to reach one of the loop’s best lookouts.
The trail’s split personality means it will have something to suit everyone, though many people will gravitate toward one section
or the other, depending on their skills and interests — but they are two sides of the same coin.
The lake’s importance to migratory birds means you will find them all over the tiny canyons and inlets on the craggy side, scattered along the shore or gliding across the surface.
The bright Prescott sun is another unifying factor — There are some shady trees and stretches interspersed along the way but you will need to bring water, with the tamer side bordered mostly by grass and the rocky side absorbing a lot of heat on these long summer days.
