Prescott PULSE
For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
T he B illy R eno B and
Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
The Billy Reno Band: This configuration of the band it’s been 2½ years. I started out with a trio and have morphed into a six-piece goodtime, roadhouse, up tempo band that keeps the audience dancing and smiling!
Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play?
The Billy Reno Band: We play music that makes us happy and we throw in a few originals too. We have Papa T and he’s a great blues harmonica player. We’ve got the Princess of Prescott Merri McKee and she belts out lots of great female tunes from Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams to Aretha
and Patsy Cline. I love playing with a twang so you’ll hear Billy play some Hank Sr., Hank III, Leftover Salmon, Jackson Brown, Randy Newman and Sam the Sham. Drummer
Tom Galella is a rocker, so he keeps the place hopping. Our masterful bass player Cal Greer can play jazzy or country with either a stand-up bass or fivestring electric.
What really inspires us and motivates us to be better are some of the other great musicians here. I’m talking about Don Cheek and the CheekTones. Then there’s Scandalous Hands with Troy Schilperoort on keys and Adam Haar on guitar/vocals. Sky Daddy is the master showman, can play anything and always

has a smile on his face. And lastly, Andrew Deering because he’s twangy like me, plays multiple instruments and paid me $20 to mention him in this article.
Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
The Billy Reno Band: From what I’ve observed, it helps if you are a kick-ass musician, singer and entertainer. This town is oozing with successful musical acts. They know how connect with their audience. And it helps if you are
genuinely nice people (which all the people I’ve mentioned are!).
Prescott NOW : What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
T he B illy R eno B and: Here in Prescott/Northern AZ the smallest audience is the people standing in line at The Up in Smoke BBQ in Chino Valley and the largest audience here locally is the TBD Show Skitmas at a sold out Elks theatre with 450 in attendance.
Prescott NOW: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?
The Billy Reno Band: We live in Prescott — that is all the inspiration we need. Sometimes the inspiration comes easily, like my marketing person, Heather DeSousa, contacted me about a video shoot we were doing downtown on Whiskey Row and she needed me to write a song. All she gave me was a title — Frisky as a Whiskey. So I sat down and wrote the song in 15 minutes.
As far as inspiration for our performances, that’s an easy one — our audience.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
The Billy Reno Band: I don’t really know, I was kind of in a haze in my life at the time, things were blurry, without direction, I was looking for something, although I don’t know what, and then I woke up out of my stupor and I was in Prescott, on Whiskey Row, Thumb Butte in the back ground, with a guitar case in my hand and a free pizza coupon for Limoncello in my pocket. And I heard live music coming from everywhere on the square. At that moment I knew I had found my place.
Or maybe my wife just told me we were moving to Prescott one day.
Great Food. DRINKS. Live Music.

BUFFALO SOLDIERS
Eric Reed, Presenter
Eric Reed became obsessed with the history and legacy of the black soldiers while a Sergeant and twenty-six-year member of the Phoenix Police Dept. Since his retirement he has been telling their stories for over twenty years thru presentations, displays, and uniform reenactments.
How was it that the oppressed became the oppressor and then be honored by their enemy by calling them “Buffalo Soldiers.”
The “Buffalo Soldier” name would hence be applied to all members of the armed services, male or female from 1866 at its formation to 1948 when all the armed services were integrated. Executive Order 9981

The Courthouse Lighting event — with live music — begins at 5 p.m., and then watch as the Courthouse and more than 80 trees light up at 6 p.m., followed by fireworks.
A free shuttle service will be available from the Prescott High School parking lot to Granite Street.

All tips to artists provide music lessons and instruments to local youth and support school music programs. A free shuttle service is provided from Frontier Village Shopping Center off AZ-69.
Next up is the 3rd annual Christmas Village & Christkindl Market Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 on West Goodwin Street. Inspired by a centuries-old European tradition, it features holiday gift items

YC & Chino Valley Ring in Fall
It was all about hayrides, plant sales, corn mazes, pumpkin patches and tractor shows when Yavapai College’s Chino Valley Campus hosted tours and activities designed to introduce visitors to the array of agricultural fields and technical trades on the campus during its Harvest Festival in October.
Festival-goers learned about horticulture, aquaculture, drone flights, commercial driving simulators, welding, automotive repair, electric utility technician training, EMS training, the culinary
arts and much more.
The day’s family-fun activities were sponsored in partnership between Yavapai College, the Town of Chino Valley and the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce.
YC Chino Valley Campus Dean Marnee Zazueta said the day would be filled with, “Searching for their perfect pumpkin in the patch, getting lost in the corn maze among the sunflowers, exploring the fall colors of campus by hayride, and so much more.” There were handson demonstrations, fall plant sales,
craft vendors, food trucks and a beer garden.
The Harvest Festival was Oct. 5 at Yavapai College’s Chino Valley Agribusiness Center, 2275 Old Home Manor Drive, in Chino Valley.
Yavapai College operates six campuses and centers throughout Yavapai County and offers over 100 degrees and certificates, two baccalaureate degrees, student and community services, and cultural events and activities.

“Where there is no wine, there is no love.”
Euripides
Riley Gaines, Kyle Mann Rock Prescott with Sanity, Satire
submitted by Barbara Ernst, RWOP Media Chair
An enthusiastic audience was entertained by two young conservative influencers, Riley Gaines and Kyle Mann, at the Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center during a Republican Women of Prescott hosted event.
Kyle Mann, editor-in-chief of The Babylon Bee, took the podium first. His satirical headlines and articles had the audience erupting in laughter. The Bee uses humor and satire to expose censorship and wokeness.
Kyle was followed by Riley Gaines, a 12-time All-American swimmer with 5 SEC titles, who gained recognition when she was forced to share a locker room and then compete with biological male Lia Thomas at the 2022 NCAA Women’s Swimming Championship. This uneven challenge was made even more traumatic when the NCAA officials insisted on giving Lia Thomas the trophy, despite tying Riley down to a hundredth of a second in the event.
Now her call to action is to defend and protect America’s daughters against the woke left and their gender-denying ideology.
The event concluded with a Q & A portion with both speakers. Attendees were impressed with the warmth shown by the keynote speakers as they leisurely strolled through the VIP event shaking hands, giving hugs and posing for pictures. Prescott is blessed to be entertained by these outstanding conservatives and we support them in their plight for fairness not only in sports, but in all facets of our daily lives.
The event was Sept. 17.

Homeownership for America’s Heroes
For many veterans and active-duty military members, the journey to homeownership can be both exciting and challenging. Fortunately, veterans have access to a unique resource that many other Americans do not that can make help make the dream of homeownership a reality: the VA Home Loan program.
Established in 1944 as part of the GI Bill, this government-backed loan program has helped millions of veterans, service members and their families achieve homeownership.
To help clients find a home, REALTORS® need to know more than neighborhood details and
how to write a contract. They pride themselves in being educated on the ways in which a potential client can go about purchasing a home, including the types of financing they can attain.
Throughout the United States there are thousands of veterans serving within the real estate industry, ranging from title representatives and mortgage lenders to insurance agents and of course, REALTORS®.
There is a specific organization compiled of these individuals called the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals. Members of this group gain special education and direction they can use to help potential veteran and active-duty individuals get the financing they need to purchase a home.
The process of using a VA loan can be complex as it is a specific type of loan requiring certain steps to be fulfilled. A VA home loan is a
mortgage loan guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Unlike conventional loans, which are typically backed by private lenders, VA loans come with a range of advantages that make homeownership more accessible to veterans.
While the VA itself does not provide the loan, it offers a guarantee to private lenders, reducing the risk they face and allowing them to offer more favorable terms to eligible borrowers.
Applying for VA loan can be seamless, but using the loan in the purchase of a home can lead to roadblocks that a specialized REALTOR® will foresee and help navigate. For instance, VA loans require a specific type of home inspection prior to purchase; a stipulation that an experienced REALTOR® will be able to manage with ease.
After making one of the greatest commitments possible, veterans and active-duty military members deserve the expertise and guidance of a REALTOR® to achieve the dream of homeownership.

A Tale of Empires Lost & Love D iscovered
submitted
by
Yavapai College’s Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center
A fallen Czar, an empire lost. The glorious spectacle of a royal return and the flickering light of love that kindles it all. Join us for the grandeur and gorgeous music behind a mysterious princess and her return to the light. Yavapai College Performing Arts Department proudly presents its production of the Broadway hit Anastasia, Friday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 17, at YC’s Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center in Prescott.
Directed by Dr. Craig J. Ralston, Anastasia was created by the Tony Award®-winning authors of the Broadway classic Ragtime . This dazzling musical transports audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the giddy
euphoria of 1920s Paris as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, she enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable exaristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family.
The Yavapai College production of Anastasia will feature actresses Alyssa Ebel and Callie Voorhies doubling the roles of the Romanov princess.
Ebel said their approaches to the role have subtle differences: “It’s similar in how we block it, how we choreograph it, but emotionally and connection-wise, within ourselves, we have different moments, different things that make us unique in our own way.”
Voorhies added that while both are well-rounded performers they
bring different strengths to the role. “Alyssa is very strong in dancing, singing, and it’s obvious that’s what she loves to do, while for me, my order has always been acting, singing, dancing.”
Voorhies will perform on the show’s even-numbered dates and Ebel on the odd dates.
Anastasia will offer two evening performances – Friday, Nov. 8 and Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m.; and 3 p.m. matinees on the following Saturdays and Sundays: Nov. 9, 10, 16 and 17. The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center will also hold a special Princess Tea at 1 p.m. before the Saturday, Nov. 9 performance, at $15 per person.
Tickets start at $35, with $10 Youth tickets available. For more information, please call 928.776.2000 or visit www.ycpac.com

Volunteers Install Free Smoke Alarms in Dewey-Humboldt
submitted
by Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA)
On Saturday, Oct. 5, volunteers dedicated their morning to installing smoke alarms as part of the Dewey-Humboldt Community Smoke Alarm Walk, a collaboration between the Arizona Burn Foundation, Red Cross of Arizona, and the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA).
Volunteers installed 32 smoke alarms in 10 homes, and 25 residents were educated in smoke alarm and fire escape plan safety.
Smoke alarm initiatives like this one aim to increase the safety of vulnerable residents in highrisk neighborhoods by offering free smoke alarms and alarm installation services. CAFMA’s Fire Prevention team strategically selects target neighborhoods where the smoke alarm walks can have the greatest impact, ensuring the effort benefits those most in need.
“During every smoke alarm walk, we find homes with no alarms at all
and many with inactive ones. Please take a moment to test your smoke alarms today, and set a reminder to test them monthly,” said CAFMA Fire Marshal Darrell Tirpak. “If your smoke alarm runs on batteries, make sure to replace them at least once a year. A helpful reminder is to do it around Thanksgiving, but feel free to pick a date that works best for you and your family.”
CAFMA looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the Arizona Burn Foundation and the Red Cross to plan future Community Smoke Alarm Walks in the neighborhoods of Chino Valley, Dewey-Humboldt, and Prescott Valley. The organization extends their sincere gratitude to the Arizona Burn Foundation, the Red Cross of Arizona, and the dedicated volunteers who generously gave their time and effort to support the DeweyHumboldt community.
Smoke Alarm Safety
• Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each sleeping area.
• Install alarms on every level of the home.
• Avoid installing alarms in the kitchen and bathrooms (to reduce false alarms).
• Test smoke alarms once a month.
• Dust smoke alarms regularly.
• Replace the entire smoke alarm every 8 – 10 years.
• Know two ways out of every room in your home.
• Create a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.
• If the alarm sounds, immediately go outside and stay outside.
• Alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers are available for those who are hard-of hearing or deaf.

You’ve Gotta have Friends!
Friendsgiving has become a beloved tradition for those looking to celebrate Thanksgiving with their closest friends, often before or after the main holiday. Whether you’re staying local or gathering from different places, here are a few ideas to make this year’s Friendsgiving memorable and exciting.
Potluck with a twist
Instead of the usual Thanksgiving meal, make your Friendsgiving a themed potluck. Ask guests to bring a dish that represents their family heritage or favorite cuisine. This approach adds a fun twist to the typical turkey and stuffing, encouraging everyone to explore new flavors.
Add some local flair by incorporating ingredients from farmers markets or specialty stores.
Outdoor picnic by the lake
If you’re craving fresh air, consider hosting Friendsgiving outdoors by one of the beautiful lakes in the area. Watson Lake and Goldwater Lake are both excellent options, offering
picturesque scenery and plenty of space for a cozy picnic. Bring blankets, portable heaters and thermoses filled with hot cider
After enjoying your meal, stroll along the trails or rent kayaks to get out on the water. With the crisp fall air and stunning surroundings, it’s the perfect way to connect with nature while spending quality time with friends.
Friendsgiving brunch in nature
For a different twist, swap out
the traditional dinner for a Friendsgiving brunch. Serve dishes like sweet potato pancakes, pumpkin spice waffles and cranberry mimosas.
For a beautiful spot to host your brunch, consider Thumb Butte. This scenic area provides great picnic facilities and offers stunning mountain views. Brunching here allows you to enjoy the crisp morning air while basking in the beauty of fall foliage.
Afterward, explore nearby trails if you’re feeling adventurous.
Bonfire and game night
Wrap up your Friendsgiving with a bonfire and game night. After sharing a meal, gather around a fire pit with blankets and s’mores supplies. Bring out board games or organize a trivia competition. The cozy fire and fun games will keep the festive spirit going long into the night.
NOAH Thrift Stores Anniversary Celebration
The NOAH (Neglected, Orphaned, Abused and Homeless animals) Foundation was formed in 1999, with the board of directors setting a goal of at least 25 years of giving to animal welfare organizations from the profits of its thrift store. A quarter-century and a second store later, it celebrated its longevity with a party for customers, volunteers and beneficiaries.
NOAH Thrift Store and NOAH, TOO, at 603 S. Granite St. in Prescott, marked the occasion June 22 with raffle prizes, “spin the wheel” for even more prizes, hot dogs, chips, music and slices of homemade chocolate and vanilla cake adorned with miniature animal figures. Several of their donation recipients were on hand to set up booths and handed out free memorabilia from their organization as well. Max, a beautiful
macaw, oversaw the festivities.
There were plenty of smiles and a sense of pride from everyone attending and the stores posted extra sales throughout the day. Some of the attending organizations were United Animal Friends, Equine Emergency and Evacuation Services, Blue Moon Rescue, Yavapai Humane Trappers and the Heritage Park Zoo. These groups showed their gratitude by spreading information, goodwill and more free gifts.
The NOAH stores have reached their annual projected profits “more times than not” and several years have exceeded that for sharing, according to the board. In 2023 it divided $184,000 in proceeds to 10 designated animal welfare groups. The complete list is proudly displayed in each of the two stores and can change periodically.
Over 90% of the people at NOAH are volunteers, whose passion is to help, and all were women until the recent addition of its first male volunteer. Items sold are donated by the public and can be dropped off 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday in the parking lot shared by the stores.
The stores are open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. NOAH sells lower-priced items and has amazing bargains for shoppers, while NOAH, TOO offers higher-end objects including vintage and antiques. Their annual sale of Christmas items starts this month (November) and promises to be the biggest ever. Naturally, they are petfriendly, with bowls of water and a treat or two for four-legged friends.
For more information call 928.708.0545 or visit the NOAH Thrift Store Facebook page.
