ASK JUDY YOUR REAL ESTATE QUESTIONS Dear Judy: I am ten years old and want to know why there aren’t enough houses to buy. My mother is a nurse and trying to buy a house around Prescott. We live in an apartment, and she said if we get a house I can get a puppy. She keeps trying to get a house, but always gets turned down. Her real estate lady said there just are not enough houses in Prescott and maybe we should wait. But when we drive around, I see plenty of houses and even some new ones being built. I want a puppy and now it looks like that might never happen! Can you help us?
~ Brody
Dear Brody: I know you want a puppy . . . and a house. There are lots of homes that you can see as you drive around the Prescott area. And yes, builders are building more. It just so happens that more people want to move to our town than we have houses for them to buy. But I see a puppy in your future, and would encourage you (and your mother) not to give up. Just like if you want to do well at school, or sports, or music, you just keep trying and practicing. There are many things to think about when buying a house, such as price, location, size, cost and, of course, a puppy. Thanks for writing to me . . .and I would say “don’t wait” but keep searching. And I would be happy to help.

Local Business Spotlight: Wineries & Bars G
reater Prescott’s locally owned bars, wineries, vineyards and breweries are some of the top gathering spots in our community. They sell us some of the finest libations in the state, country and world while giving us lively yet comfortable places to meet friends old and new. We can go to where the grapes are grown, the beers are brewed or the fruit is fermented, or where the end product is served (or not, in the case of Arizona’s largest self-serve taproom).

Yes, it’s about the “buzz,” but it’s also about the buzz of talking to and just being around other people. Our local business owners, brewers, barkeeps and waitstaff have the pulse of the people of Greater Prescott like few others. They know what the community likes to drink, eat and discuss. In the end, they know how to create a place where everybody knows your name.

Matt’s Saloon M
att’s Longhorn Saloon has been a part of Prescott’s famous “Whiskey Row” since the early 1960s and is still going strong today as one of Prescott’s last true Honky Tonks. Occupying the historic D. Great country-western acts such as Buck Owens, Lee Hazelwood and Waylon Jennings entertained Matt’s customers in the early to mid 60s and
more recently, in 2003, Andy Griggs and Leland Martin performed. Even legendary rock & roller Bruce Springsteen has a special connection with Matt’s Saloon. Stop by to make a friend, enjoy a cold one and twostep the night away on their magnificent 1,200 square-foot oak dance floor. Take a look back in time as their picturecovered walls capture the endless memories Matt’s has given to many over the past forty years. Contact Information: 112 S. awn Wasocwicz, the owner of Rafter Eleven, calls herself a rancher’s daughter. She created Rafter Eleven in the heart of Prescott Valley for three reasons. First, to honor the past because where the Rafter Eleven store sits today used to be part of the original ranching land. Secondly, to pay tribute to her father for providing the Rafter Eleven legacy, which is honesty, integrity, effort and to provide opportunity where we live. Lastly, to create a place where community could truly connect! The Rafter Eleven brand holds great meaning for Dawn. The Eleven represents the pillars of this community: those who laid the foundation before, the Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Prescott Valley, the visionaries and the ranchers. The Rafter, or the rooftop, is the piece that Dawn is creating; a place where Prescott Valley can bring their family and friends and connect — a place of great quality coffee, incredible olive oils and balsamic vinegars, exquisite wines, in a beautiful space that feels like home to everyone who comes in! LazyG Brewhouse W
hat started out as a love of beer and breweries turned into a dream of building our own place. From the humble beginning of a vintage trailer park (circa 1945), purchased in 2007, we started planning the transformation to the LazyG Brewhouse. In 2018, finally able to devote the time needed to see our plans come to fruition, construction got underway – from the ground up. Stepping into the LazyG, our open concept with bright artwork and a view into the brewery has an inviting feel. A roll-up glass garage door brings the outside in, when the weather is right. The Park is a great outdoor space (dog friendly) with picnic tables, big chairs, firepits and a stage for live music on weekends. Enjoy a beer made by our awardwinning brewer served from our iconic outdoor bar. Experience Craft & Comfort. Contact information: 220 W. Founding Fathers - City Tavern Taproom
P
hiladelphia, 1772, a group of citizens commissioned to build City Tavern. It became the meeting place for prominent and influential American leaders such as Paul Revere, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and more. They would gather to discuss how to fight off tyranny, establish freedom and build a future America that’s led by elected leaders. On July 4, 1776, all these conversations and meetings were stamped into history as City Tavern erupted in celebration for America’s first Independence Day. In honor of this historic gathering place Founding Fathers has created City Tavern Taproom, to be a home for all who want to build community, connect with others and share how they will leave their mark on history, all while enjoying the best beers the world has to offer. 33rd Gathering of Cowboy Poets Returns in August T
he Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering will take the stage at a new venue this year, the Prescott Rodeo Grounds. The popular event will be Aug. 12 through Aug. 14. More than 40 cowboy poets and singers will share their heritage and the culture. Featured performers include Dave Stamey, Jay Snider and Belinda Gail. This year’s collectible poster design was created by rancher and artist JaNeil Anderson and is titled “That Girl is a Cowboy.” An original framed giclee will be available to win through the annual raffle. Dave Stamey will be the featured performer at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12. He has been a cowboy, a mule packer and a dude wrangler. He was voted seven times Entertainer of the Year and Male Performer of the year, and five times Songwriter of the Year by the Western Music Association. He also received the Will Rogers Award from the Academy of Western Artists. Friday evening’s performer will be Jay Snider. Born into a ranching and rodeo family, Snider rodeoed throughout most of his early years and stays busy raising ranch horses, cattle and team roping. He has performed on Country Music Television, the National Cowboy Gathering in Elko, Nevada, Ozarks Fall Roundup and Hills Outdoor Theater in Branson, Missouri. He has been recognized with awards including Best of Best trophy at Kanab; he is a six-time nominee for male poet of the year by the Academy of Western Artists. On Saturday night Belinda Gail will be on stage. Ranching and the “cowboy life” are part of the essence of this performer. Gail recently was listed as one of the top 50 Country and Western Entertainers of all time by American Cowboy Magazine. Her dynamic and captivating voice stirs the emotions and visions of the West in the heart of every audience she embraces. The event features free day sessions in which attendees can meet cowboy poets and singers to learn about the culture and history that celebrate the American Cowboy. “Like so many events last year, it was unfortunate we had to cancel the Gathering because of COVID-19. We are excited though to bring it back this year in an all new outdoor venue,” said Chairman Jim Buchanan. “We really couldn’t do this large event without our hard-working volunteers who have dedicated their time to bring this to Prescott for the past 32 years.”
The Gathering is respected by the cowboy poets as one of the best gatherings in the country because it helps maintain the true “working cowboy” culture and heritage. Tickets are available by going to www.azcowboypoets.org or calling 928-776-2000 or 877-928-4253.

Adult Crafts-to-Go Kits Available T
he Arizona State Library, a division of the Secretary of State, recently awarded Prescott Public Library a grant of $4,000 for Crafts-to-Go kits. Adult Services Librarian Rosemary Medrano wrote the grant “to provide adults the opportunity to participate in a fun craft activity without a major investment of time or financial resources.” Adult Crafts-to-Go kits are thoughtfully curated boxes for adults ages 18 and older to create a stylish craft project at home. Each month brings an opportunity to learn a new technique. Past crafts have included a marbled painted mug, a macramé plant hanger and string art. The kits include all the supplies needed
to make the craft and instructions for crafters of all skill levels. The kits are available to pick up starting on the first day of each the month (while supplies last) at the Ask a Librarian Desk on the 2nd floor of the library.
Prescott Public Library’s Crafts-to-Go kits include: • A reusable custom branded cardboard box. • Supplies and instructions needed for a craft. • A themed book list. July’s craft will include color block candles and August will feature a handcrafted bound journal. Follow along with our “how-to” videos on the library’s YouTube channel, then share your creation with us on social media using #pplcraftstogo. For questions please contact the Ask a Librarian desk at 928-777-1526. This project is supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Get Real Men’s Expo Returns Aug. 21 T
hink of everything unique about men — their passions, activities, sports, man toys, and motivational explorer/speakers —and you’ll know what makes them tick. That is what the Get Real Men’s Expo is all about. The 2021 Get Real Men’s Expo will be held 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM Aug. 21 at Mountaintop Christian Fellowship campus, 1519 W Gurley St, Prescott. This will be the event’s ninth year, after it had to be canceled in 2020. It was previously held at Yavapai College. New for this year will be ax throwing, bull riding, rock climbing, fly fishing, tee-off longdistance golf drives, drones and more, all designed for boys to men of all ages. “This year’s Expo focuses on good clean fun that is uniquely male while providing a Christian role model that renews faith,” says Dan Olsen, past Expo chairman. “We want men to have fun and get involved in their local church again.” The free event is made possible by the support of over 27 local churches and many Christian business owners as the Every Man Arizona coalition. Through a partnership with Promise Keepers, they will fly in global explorer and renowned Bible archaeologist Dr. Bob Cornuke to speak at 11:00 AM. He speaks to thousands each year and shares what may be the most incredible archaeological discovery to date — Mount Sinai. The numerous other activities will include a “Dunk the Pastor” booth, demonstrations about chainsaw carving, K-9 attacks and offroading, a garden ministry for growing your own food, a classic car show and much more, says John Murphy, who will be the event’s emcee. Women are welcome to come enjoy the event, he said, but its focus has always been on building fellowship and mentorship among Christian men, particularly fathers and sons. About 800 people attended in 2019. “If you’re a father and you have young children, this is a place where you’ll be surrounded by positive people, and it’s a great time for kids that they will probably remember for the rest of their lives,” he said.
