Goldwater Lake Trails CELEBRATE FOREST GEM

Goldwater Lake may be the prettiest of the three major bodies of water managed by the City of Prescott, despite lacking the drama of the grand, jagged boulders of Willow and Watson lakes to the north.

Instead, it has stands of imposing ponderosas marching right up to the shore, giving an alpine aura to all the picnicking, boating, canoeing, paddle boarding, horseshoe throwing, volleyball playing and other frolicking that happens there.

The gorgeous scenery draws many a hiker to the park 4 miles south of Prescott on Senator Highway, which takes downtown’s charming Mt. Vernon Avenue into the mountains and forest. It’s actually beyond the city limits and surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land, so there are trails managed by both jurisdictions in the area, which give visitors the options of a leisurely stroll or a more extended hike.

The City of Prescott has two relatively short standalone paths hugging the north and south sides of the 55-acre lake. Both can be accessed from the parking lot just in from the entrance into Goldwater Lake Park from the road of the same name.

To the north is the North Shore Trail, which obviously follows the northern shore of the lake, taking you a ¼ mile to the dam that forms the lake. Seeing the manmade edge of the lake can be fascinating and disorienting at the same time but doesn’t put a damper on the fun people have there.

The longer one, Banning Creek Trail, wraps around the south shore for about 2/3 of a mile and is connected by three side trails to the longest Forest Service trail serving the area, Goldwater Lake Trail No. 396.

No. 396’s eastern trailhead is on the east side of Senator Highway, just south of the entrance to Goldwater Lake Park. The trail starts on the other side of the highway. It winds through the hills and ridges south of Goldwater Lake and the smaller, undeveloped Lower Goldwater Lake to its west, providing spellbinding views of both.

This is truly a hike for all seasons for its spring and summer greenery, brilliant fall colors and moody winters laced by blankets of snow that bring an overwhelming calm to the scene. The vegetation varies from ponderosa to Gambel oak to chaparral scrub, willows and boxelders.

find family at b. simple restaurant

48 Prescott NOW Vol. 11, No. 4
by Chef Jose Sanchez and Katherine Velasco, Owners, b. simple Restaurant

• Favorite •

"The Ken” is a long time favorite. Three eggs, butter browns, and a butter griddled biscuit smothered in our house made bacon-sausage gravy with bacon make up this memorable breakfast dish.

Our goal at b. simple is to make our customers family and — just like in any family — come back for more.

To do this, we embrace customers with the highest level of service through our caring, competent staff. We provide our staff with the tools, training and education needed to be confident and feel empowered to create their own working environment.

Read our reviews online and you’ll see customers rave about our staff.

We love to welcome repeat guests by name, and can’t wait to learn the names of new customers. Our open, unassuming kitchen environment invites a family feeling.

And, you won’t leave hungry. Some customers like sitting at the counter to watch the action from the kitchen to the table. And out-oftowners have said they’ll be looking for excuses to return to Prescott just to come back to our restaurant.

Delve into hearty portions of food made daily from scratch ranging from our massive burritos to our most popular “The Ken.” Sample our house made jams, giant biscuits, bacon and sausage gravy, Hatch chile sauces (red and green), sausage, pancake batter, hash browns and more.

If you like spicy, sweet or savory, you can find it here. We’ve received many wonderful reviews, so search

“b. Simple restaurant” on Google and click on our more than 213 reviews in the box to the right on the first search page. Add the word “reviews” to your search and you’ll see what people have to say on Yelp, Trip Advisor and Restaurant Guru.

We came to Prescott in 2020 from New Mexico where Chef Jose was the executive chef for NASA. He has been cooking for nearly 35 years and is a Le Cordon Bleu graduate.

We are so grateful for the wonderful response to what we are doing at b. simple.

We are located at 220 S. Montezuma St. in downtown Prescott. Follow us on Facebook at b. simple.

Positive indicators visible for the Quad Cities housing market

The median sold price across all areas rose again in February with Prescott Valley recording a 5.2% increase to lead the Quad Cities. Regions showing a decline in median sales prices were, again, mostly limited to single digits; the Prescott area’s median sold price fell 15% in a likely reflection of that region consistently posting the highest gains in monthly median sold price throughout the pandemic’s housing boom.

Most notable, however, is the 189.3% increase in active inventory across all of PAAR in February. Dewey-Humboldt led the category with 4.2 months of inventory, followed closely by Chino Valley (4.1 months) and Prescott (4 months). Prescott Valley closed out the month of January with 2.8 months of inventory, a slight increase from last month. Despite the pandemic fueled rise in home purchases, as recently as January of 2022 the nation recorded its lowest housing inventory numbers in 20

years. This spurred a parallel decrease in mortgage applications when principles of supply and demand pushed home prices beyond what many Americans expected during a time of financial anxiety. Yet, by early 2022 federal data reveals that Arizona had added almost 400,000 jobs, fully recouping 100% of pandemic-related job losses in the state.

“Low inventory will present challenges for buyers, but current market conditions may also present unique challenges to sellers as well. An experienced REALTOR® will know how to assess an individual property’s fair market value,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President.

“Many REALTORS® complete rigorous training through their local, state, and national associations to specialize in buyer or seller representation, commercial or residential properties, even military relocation,” Humphrey added. “Why would you trust your home or your business to anyone less qualified?”

While some residents may be discouraged that the data shows a decrease in total sales last month across all regions (31.5%), perspective is key; new listings also dropped an average of 11.2% during that same period. As the nation, and our area, continue to prioritize housing inventory in our communities, history shows us that as one improves the other is likely to follow.

The detailed reports are available here:https://dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographic and https://dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographicArea

Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.

James and the Giant Peach Jr.

One Stage Family Theatre brought “James and the Giant Peach’s” quirky story of courage and self-discovery Feb. 17-18, 2023 to the Elks Theatre and Performing Arts Center. James goes on the adventure of a lifetime after he’s sent by his conniving aunts to chop down an old fruit tree. A magic potion enters the scene and enlarges one peach until it rolls into a shark-infested ocean with him inside of it, along with a swarm of human-sized singing insects to argue and collaborate with on their way to New York City and the Empire State Building.

Creative costumes, puppetry and the irresistibly tuneful score performed by local kids made this the “peachiest” show Greater Prescott has seen for a long time!

National Library Week at Prescott Public Library

Once a year, we take time to celebrate libraries and the wonderful staff who work there. This year, National Library Week takes place April 2329. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country. This year will be celebrated with the theme, “There’s More to the Story!”

Most people know about the wealth of stories available at the library,

from picture books, large print books, audiobooks, and ebooks, to magazines, movies, and video games. But there's so much more to the story of libraries. Libraries are welcoming spaces that bring communities together for entertainment, education, and connection for all ages through programs like book clubs, storytimes, arts and crafting, hands-on learning, lectures, and technology classes. Prescott Public Library also offers a variety of nonbook items for check out in the Library

of Things, including wi-fi hotspots, culture passes, hiking kits, telescopes, a seed library, and more!

If you haven't checked out Prescott Public Library lately, you're missing the full story. Stop by for a visit to celebrate with us during National Library Week, April 23-29, and take part in our library scavenger hunt, bring your kids to meet Peter Rabbit at one of our storytimes, or visit us (and Peter Rabbit!) at the Prescott Farmer’s Market on Saturday, April 29.

Valentine's at the Farm

Mortimer Farms' Valentine's at the Farm event was once again an absolutely beautiful event. The farm to table menu wowed guests as they enjoyed house-cured summer sausage, local mini goat cheese balls, spiced nuts, olives, farm jam, savory shortbread, bacon-wrapped filet with cowboy butter, "Marry Me" chicken, parmesan risotto, marinated grilled seasonal veggies, and chocolate covered strawberry cake. Each couple found themselves seated at a private table with mixed-matched china, crystal glassware, silverware, and fresh flower swags from Mortimer Nursery. The icing on the cake was the live harpist, guitarist, and violinist playing romantic music. Each couple ended the evening with a rose and a photo. Valentine's at the Farm is a truly one-of-a-kind evening!
