Prescott PULSE
For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
Rusty Bullets
Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
Rusty Bullets: We began over two years ago as a weekly guitar jam session at the Back Alley Wine Bar, morphing into a more formalized performance session there every Friday afternoon. By summer 2023, so many people were asking when and where we played, we decided it was time to expand. We are playing gigs at several locations throughout the greater Prescott area.
Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play?
Rusty Bullets: Our five members, all having spent their musically
formative years during the 1960s and ‘70s, focus on the type of music we all came to know and love — classic soft rock, blues and country rock. In addition, band members “Bull” Pratt and “Doc” Wainess have written several original songs.
Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
Rusty Bullets: You’ve got to know your audience and play to your audience! Prescott is comprised of many individuals who share the same musical timeframes that make up Rusty Bullets. We try to remain true to the spirit of
the popular songs we play, but we like to think that our style and interpretation of those songs is unique.
Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
Rusty Bullets: We’re not a “cookie cutter” band, as all five of our members come from highly diverse musical backgrounds. Doc and bass player Jime have had professional musical careers playing in front of large throngs, and all of us have performed in venues that vary from small, intimate locations to complex commercial stages.

See Rusty Bullets at Whiskey River Tavern on July 24th from 6:30-9:30 PM.
Prescott Now: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?
Rusty Bullets: Almost everyone associates music with their memories and emotions. If you hear a song on the radio, it may trigger a memory of a particular time, place or person from your past. Music is woven into each of our lives, and Rusty Bullets try and share those feelings through the songs we play.
Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?
Rusty Bullets: William “Bull” Pratt
Lead vocalist/rhythm guitar. After 24-year career in the Marines flying F-4 and F/A-18 fighters, Bull retired as a Lt. Colonel. He and his wife, Linda found Prescott and moved here in 2014.
his wife Janet moved to Prescott in 2020.
Dave Long Rhythm/solo guitar/vocals. Dave and his wife moved to the area in 2020 leaving the East Coast behind. Dave immediately started looking for musicians to play with. After making many friends and playing lots of music, he joined the Peaceful Outlaws, finally becoming a Rusty Bullet over two years ago.
Jim Bacigalupi Harmonica. Jim has been a Prescottonian for over 20 years. A year ago, he sat in with the Rusty Bullets crew and one thing led to another.
Jime Van Booven Bass/vocals. Jime is the newest member and has been involved with music in various bands since his return from Vietnam in 1971. In 2019, and he and his wife Peggy moved to Prescott.
Richard “Doc” Wainess Lead guitar/vocals. Richard made his living in the ‘70s as a lead guitarist. Doc is recipient of the 2022 SongsAlive® Songwriter of the Year award. Doc and
Jime has worked with various musicians and groups in the area since his arrival, finally joining Rusty Bullets in 2023.

The Other Earp: Virgil
by John Mason Glen, Ph.D., the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation
Virtually everyone knows of the gun battle that took place in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, on Oct.26, 1881, near the O.K. Corral.
It has been the subject of at least seven full-length motion pictures (John Ford, director of My Darling Clementine, even placed Tombstone in his beloved Monument Valley, some 500 miles away), numerous books and articles.
The gunfight was not all that wellknown until the publication of Wyatt Earp, Frontier Marshall, by Stuart Lake in 1931.
The participants on the one side were Tombstone Town Marshall Virgil Earp, deputy Morgan Earp, temporary deputies Wyatt Earp and John H. “Doc” Holliday. The opposing element was comprised of local ranchers Tom and Frank McLaury, Ike and Billy Clanton, and Billy Claybourne.
The Tombstone City Council had enacted a town ordinance prohibiting the carrying of firearms within city limits. Virgil had been informed that morning the McLaury-Clanton men were violating the ordnance, and he planned to disarm them.
When the Earps and Holliday arrived at the vacant lot adjacent to C.S. Fly’s photography studio and a few steps from the O.K. Corral, they encountered the armed cowboys. Virgil, not expecting any violence, said something like” “Throw up your hands, I want your guns,” and the fight began.
Witnesses gave conflicting accounts as to who initiated the fight, but when the 30-secondlong encounter was over, brothers Frank and Tom McLaury, as well as Billy Clanton lay mortally wounded. Morgan Earp and Holliday were slightly injured; Virgil had taken a bullet to the leg. Billy Claiborne and Ike fled as the shooting began.
At the coroner’s inquest, the Earps claimed they had been enforcing
the law, while Ike Clanton claimed his brother and friends had been shot down in cold blood. No one was indicted, but about a month later, Virgil’s left arm was horribly maimed when he was ambushed as he left the Oriental saloon on 5th Street.
Three month’s later, Morgan Earp was murdered by “person or persons unknown,” while shooting pool.
Wyatt, with brothers Warren and James, plus several friends went on a ”vendetta ride,” and killed Frank Stillwell at the Tucson train station, well as Florentino Cruz, and “Curley Bill” Brociu — all suspected in the assassination of Morgan.
One of the displays at the Western Heritage Center at 156 S. Montezuma St., is on Virgil. Admission is free.

Prescott Film Festival Rides in Early This Year
submitted by Yavapai College
The 14th edition of the Prescott Film Festival is hitting the trail a little early this year, bringing its signature blend of horse movies, foreign cinema, world premieres, behind-the-scenes seminars and celluloid-themed soirees to Yavapai College’s Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center, Wednesday, July 17 through Saturday, July 20.
“We’re doing our part to keep this summer interesting,” Prescott Film Festival Director Helen Stephenson says. “So look for us right after the rodeo — and right before the Summer Olympics — to bring
Prescott the latest and greatest in modern film.”
The move is, in part, an effort to maximize the draw of Prescott’s tall pines and gentle temperatures to a statewide community that is usually slow-cooking by mid-July.
“We are the perfect summer getaway!” Stephenson says. “Escape the heat and enjoy our small-town vibes, historic downtown and the best of the best of indie films!”
The Prescott Film Festival lineup will include Robert Shields: My Life as a Robot , a documentary chronicling the Sedona resident and
legendary mime of Shields & Yarnell and will screen at the festival, with Robert Shields and the filmmakers in attendance.
The festival offers workshops and will include an acting seminar with Improv and network television actor Sean Dillingham; survivalist/ reality show veteran Cody Lundin discussing the role of an independent television producer; and professional stuntman Gary Montana sharing insights from his storied career.
Ticket information is available at 928.776.2000.

Skilled Pitmaster BRINGS IT AT NELLIE’S BBQ
Located in Prescott Valley, Nellie’s BBQ brings central Texas craft-style barbecue to Arizona. Andy Gottman, the pitmaster, has spent the last 10 years in central Texas honing his meat smoking skills.
The doors to Nellie’s BBQ opened in October 2023 offering 38 seats for in-house dining along with outdoor tables for the warm sunny days. Take-out orders also are available. Nellie’s offers a variety of smoked meat options such as: brisket, pulled pork, turkey, baby back ribs and sausages (garlic or jalapeño pepper jack cheese).
Meats are slow-smoked over oak firewood for hours making the meat tender and flavorful. The sides are made in-house and include smoked baked beans, potato salad, sweet coleslaw, creamed corn, mac n
cheese and applesauce. Cornbread or Texas toast also are available.
Nellie’s BBQ offers two burger options: a regular burger or the brisket burger (smoked brisket combined with the burger meat). Nellie’s fan-favorite menu item is brisket. It spends 20-plus hours over the heat creating the tender, moist, smoked flavor. Meal options include sandwiches, combo plates, family packs and meat by the pound.
Don’t forget to save room for the delicious peach cobbler with ice cream for dessert!
Smoking meat has been a practice for centuries. Not only does it add flavor, but it helped to preserve meat before the days of refrigeration existed. Nellie’s BBQ partners with some of the best suppliers such as K4 Gourmet Beef in Prescott and
Southside Market in Elgin, Texas. The restaurant uses locally sourced products whenever possible.
Nellie’s BBQ offers catering as well. Catering orders can be picked up or delivered (for a fee). Food can be provided for weddings, corporate events, business luncheons, awards ceremonies, family gatherings, sporting events such as Super Bowl, Final Four, World Series parties, etc. If you can plan it, Nellie’s BBQ can supply the food for it.
Andy, Maggie, Samantha, Jessica, Chloe and Toby, the Nellie’s BBQ team, look forward to serving you!
The restaurant is at 171 S. AZ-69 in Prescott Valley and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM or until the food runs out. Takeout orders can be placed by calling 928.237.5264.

Prescott Library Summertime Events B enefit Prescott Kids
Summer programs for children at the library are not only free, but robust and varied!
Besides the standard favorite events like story times, book clubs, book battles and performers like Wildman Phil, we offer other unique activities because of partnerships with community groups.
One partnership we value greatly is with our Prescott Art Docents. For the past two summers, Prescott Art Docents have taken an active role during our weekly drop-in crafts on Tuesdays and bring their creative projects to many more children.

National Night Out Prescott Rodeo Grounds to Host
Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc. is proud to host National Night Out (NNO) a free, annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer places to live.
"We look forward to welcoming friends, neighbors, and first responders," said Jim Dewey Brown, Prescott Frontier Days General Manager. "The Prescott Rodeo Grounds is a great place for our communities to gather and get to know each other better."
The event will be 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Aug. 6 at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds, 840 Rodeo Dr.
National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while encouraging a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring our local police, other first responders and neighbors together.
So far, 38 million neighbors in 41 years have taken part in NNO on the first Tuesday in August. The event will include safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much more.
For more information on National Night Out go to www.natw.org
How it started
From the NewSpirit, an official publication of the National Association of Town Watch, Inc.:
It began in the western suburbs of Philadelphia in 1970. During Matt Peskin’s volunteer work for the community watch program, he patrolled his neighborhood, assisted in patrol dispatch and then introduced the program’s newsletter to illustrate the success that took place within the organization.
Matt started to contact surrounding communities to help gather newsletter content, noticing that hundreds of these local groups existed with no shared platform to connect.
National Association of Town Watch was founded a few years later to provide community watch groups the necessary information, resources and
assets to stay informed, interested, involved and motivated within the community. Neighbors and local law enforcement nationwide supported the association as it steadily grew for the next three years.
National Night Out was introduced in August 1984 through an established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers across the nation.
NNO became a celebration among neighbors to send a message of neighborhood camaraderie. Neighborhoods across the nation began to host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and more.
OFFSTREET

Sponsored by the Prescott Chamber of Commerce, the Memorial Day weekend festivities also included a car show May 25 and a tribute to local first responders May 26. Live dance performances from Lessons by Lexe, live music, entertainment and food booths were offered throughout the event.

MILLER CREEK TRAIL GREAT FOR
FAMILIES & EVERYONE ELSE
The Miller Creek Trail follows part of the stream it is named for, which usually takes the form of a babbling brook running down from the mountainside. In spring it can be more a raging creek — as the snow in the mountains melts — then shrinks to a trickle in the summer.
It traverses ponderosa forest and riparian woodlands that host nuthatches, acorn woodpeckers
and other small forest birds.
This short trail’s slight incline makes it an easy route, and its attractive scenery makes it ideal for introducing younger children to the joys of hiking outdoors and learning about different animal and plant species.
The trees are plentiful but not overly dense, which makes it easier to spot kids who tend to wander off into nature when they can. It
follows the south bank of the creek and can be crossed on foot, wheels or horses during lower flows.
This single-track stretch and many others in the area have been included in courses for the Whiskey Off-Road mountain bike races held at the end of April, so it is well-used by those training for or fantasizing about the iconic MTB event that brings throngs of enthusiasts to Greater Prescott.
Since this trail is not directly accessible from a parking lot, it is included in a variety of looping routes in the shadow of Thumb Butte. One 3-mile-plus loop travels along the trail until it ends at Thumb Butte Bypass Trail No. 326. This trail climbs the terrain until it reaches Garden Grove Trail No.392, which treks back to the Miller Creek trail toward the parking lot.
This route provides a nice variety of tree-and cactus-studded habitat. At its eastern end, the Miller Creek Trail also branches off into Pott’s Creek Trail No. 327, which continues for another half-mile to the foot of Thumb Butte Trail No. 33 up and down the west side of that landmark, a good alternative approach to that very busy walkway.
MILLER CREEK TRAIL NO. 367
Miller Creek Trail No. 367 is part of the South Thumb Butte network of trails in Prescott National Forest. It is used by hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders, so users should remember the rules of sharing the trail: Wheels Yield to Heels — which could be amended to say, “Yields to Hooves.”
Cyclists and anyone else in a nonmotorized vehicle are asked to yield to all other users, while hikers and runners should make way for equestrians. For more information about trail etiquette visit www. fs.usda.gov/detail/prescott/ recreation/?cid=fseprd739178 Trail No. 367 is accessible by taking short pieces of the West Trail No. 318 and Javelina Trail No. 332 from the Thumb Butte Recreation Area parking lot, about 3.5 miles west of downtown Prescott on Gurley Street/Thumb Butte Road.
Level of difficulty: Easy to moderate Elevation: Approximately 5,700 feet

19th Annual Whiskey Off-Road
Just over 600 riders took part in the Whiskey Off-Road mountain bike races April 26-28 through the terrain just west of Prescott, an annual event that brings spectators, vendors, live music and more fun to the community. Day 1 featured overcast skies which allowed nearly everyone to finish the “15 Proof” 19-mile course, but a late-day downpour canceled the Pro Fat Tire Crit race downtown. This ended up creating ideal trail conditions for Day 2’s races and the podium ceremony. Day 3’s sunniness welcomed the Shimano-MTB kids ride and the Backcountry Pro challenge, with Keegan Swenson and Alexis Skarda taking the top trophies.
As usual the Whiskey Off-Road was a collaborative event between many organizations within the Greater Prescott community, with the Yavapai Amateur Radio Club (YARC) enabling constant communication between organizers, aid stations and EMTs.
