National Night Out Prescott Rodeo Grounds to Host
Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc. is proud to host National Night Out (NNO) a free, annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer places to live.
"We look forward to welcoming friends, neighbors, and first responders," said Jim Dewey Brown, Prescott Frontier Days General Manager. "The Prescott Rodeo Grounds is a great place for our communities to gather and get to know each other better."
The event will be 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Aug. 6 at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds, 840 Rodeo Dr.
National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while encouraging a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring our local police, other first responders and neighbors together.
So far, 38 million neighbors in 41 years have taken part in NNO on the first Tuesday in August. The event will include safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much more.
For more information on National Night Out go to www.natw.org
How it started
From the NewSpirit, an official publication of the National Association of Town Watch, Inc.:
It began in the western suburbs of Philadelphia in 1970. During Matt Peskin’s volunteer work for the community watch program, he patrolled his neighborhood, assisted in patrol dispatch and then introduced the program’s newsletter to illustrate the success that took place within the organization.
Matt started to contact surrounding communities to help gather newsletter content, noticing that hundreds of these local groups existed with no shared platform to connect.
National Association of Town Watch was founded a few years later to provide community watch groups the necessary information, resources and
assets to stay informed, interested, involved and motivated within the community. Neighbors and local law enforcement nationwide supported the association as it steadily grew for the next three years.
National Night Out was introduced in August 1984 through an established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers across the nation.
NNO became a celebration among neighbors to send a message of neighborhood camaraderie. Neighborhoods across the nation began to host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and more.

Prescott PULSE
For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
Flashback
Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
Flashback: Just over a year. John plays guitar and sings lead, Jack is the bassist, and Jeff is the drummer. We’ve had 50+ years of experience with many bands.
We’ve opened for touring acts, played large festivals and created some great original music in past lives.
Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play?
Flashback: We love a wide variety of music, but our favorite is classic rock,
with a lil’ R&B and country. Everything from Elvis and the Beatles to the Eagles, Stones, Zeppelin, Petty, SRV, Skynyrd, Chicago and just about everything in between!
Prescott NOW: What about them inspires you?
Flashback: We are most inspired about music that takes us and others back in time, moves people to dance and really inspires them to reminisce about times when they were first hearing these songs. We love to recreate music that makes you feel young again.
Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in
Prescott and Northern Arizona?
Flashback: Practice, patience, persistence and performing. The more you practice, the better you get as a player and a group. The more patient but persistent you are, the more opportunities you’ll get to perform. The more you perform, the more people will hear you, the more followers you’ll attract and the more the venues will want to hire you. It definitely takes a lot of time and effort though.
You have to practice to become quality musicians to produce quality music. Then over time, you build a loyal following of
supporters, in both fans and venues. We’re dedicated to working hard to produce a quality entertainment product that appeals to a wide audience, gaining the trust of our venues and having fun playing together.
Prescott NOW: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
Flashback: The smallest we’ve played for is none, just playing for ourselves for enjoyment and to improve. Guess most musicians have played that small event though, where only a few people show up for whatever reason, and they still deserve to hear a good performance. While it’s much harder to have the same energy, you still have to put on a performance to the best of your
ability, because you never know what single person you could affect or event could lead you to the next opportunity.
The largest audiences have been concerts, festivals and benefits, up to as many as several thousand. The energy is much higher, the lights much brighter, the stage much larger, but you still have to focus and perform as individuals and a group, whether it’s five people or 5,000.
Prescott NOW: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?
Flashback: Most musicians will tell you, making music and performing’s a labor of love. The love of the songs and the music IS the inspiration. How it makes
you feel good, happy, excited and energized, and how that infects a crowd and gives them the same feelings is why we love doing it.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Flashback: All three of us are fairly recent transplants. John’s from the L.A. area, Jack’s from the California central coast, and Jeff’s from Colorado. We were all drawn by the smaller city feel, friends and family that have relocated, great weather and close proximity to so many cities and outdoor vacation and adventure opportunities.
Everyone just loves Prescott, and we’re no exception. We feel truly blessed to have found such a wonderful place to call our forever homes.

Bonnie Raitt Continues U.S. Tour in Prescott Valley
submitted by Lynette Crowe, Director of Marketing, Oak View Group
Bonnie Raitt is kicking off her 24-city fall tour in Prescott Valley Sept. 6 at Findlay Toyota Center.
The Just Like That… tour, which started April 26 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, will travel to 27 cities before starting the second leg of the tour in Arizona and Southern California. Raitt will travel up the West Coast and finish in the Pacific Northwest throughout September and October before heading to the Southeast and Florida in November to wind up the year.
These dates will be supported by special guest James Hunter. He has been crowned “The United Kingdom’s Greatest Soul Singer” by MOJO Magazine. He’s been recognized with a nomination for a GRAMMY® Award
for Best Traditional Blues Album and an Americana Music Award for Best New/Emerging Artist. Hunter and his six-piece band (with a stand-up horn section), have released six studio albums, with a seventh recorded and on its way.
Some might think Raitt would be eager to rest and take some downtime after headlining 75 concerts in 2022 and another 50 in 2023 spanning the U.S., Australia, the UK, Scotland, Ireland and Canada, in addition to winning three GRAMMY® awards at the 65th Annual ceremony in February 2023 and an Americana Music Award this past September (making Just Like That the first composition to win Song of the Year at both ceremonies).
The fact is, though there are always healthy breaks built into each tour, after a few weeks, Bonnie is itching to get back to what she loves most — traveling and playing live. Luckily her band, crew and the fans feel the same way!
From Prescott Valley on to Tucson Sept. 7 at Linda Ronstadt Music Hall and then stops at Humphreys in San Diego, The Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California, Fox Theater in Oakland, California, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon and the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington, as well as Bonnie’s first appearance since 2006 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.

H is ‘Crowded H our’
by John Mason Glen, Ph.D., the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation
He preferred to be addressed as “T.R.” or “Colonel,” rather than “Teddy.” His first wife, Alice, who died in 1884, had called him “Teddy.”
As a reward for his support of William McKinley in the 1896 presidential election, “T.R.” was appointed Under Secretary of the Navy and was partially responsible for deployment of the American battleship USS Maine to Havana harbor.
The gunboat exploded there killing over 250 sailors. This event propelled the U.S. into the SpanishAmerican War.
“T.R.,” an ardent imperialist, resigned his post in the administration and joined his friend Leonard Wood in a campaign to create an all-volunteer group of horse soldiers.
The unit was to be composed of volunteers from the West who might be prepared for the Cuban climate, but soon was comprised of an assortment of cowboys, miners, former peace officers, Native Americans, collegiate athletes, and once they got to Cuba, even commanded by a former Confederate general.
The group’s training took place in Tampa, where the weather was so unpleasant that some soldiers “wanted to defeat the Spaniards and force them to take Florida back.”
Not enough transports could be found to carry both horses and soldiers to Cuba, so all but the officers’ animals were left behind, reducing the Rough Riders to little more than glamorous infantry.
“T.R.” received a battlefield promotion to the rank of colonel and took command of the regiment.
The troops’ first firefight was outside a Cuban hamlet and forced the Spanish to withdraw to defend the more strategically valuable San
Juan Heights. The Spanish fighters were difficult to detect in the dense underbrush, but a hot air balloon from the U.S. Army Signal Corps assisted with reconnaissance.
Finally, Roosevelt’s men, in conjunction with the 3rd and the 10th Cavalry (Black “Buffalo Soldiers”) began their assault of Kettle Hill, part of San Juan Heights. The foot soldiers were supported by four Gatling guns, marking the first-time machine guns had been used in support of an
American wartime assault.
Second Lt. Thomas Rynning (a future captain of the Arizona Rangers) reportedly was the first Rough Rider to reach the crest of the hill.
The media frenzy resulting from the U.S. victory elevated “T.R.” to that of heroism and resulted in his election to the governorship of New York state, then to the vice presidency and finally to the presidency when McKinley was assassinated.
More stories and artifacts of all things western can be found at the Western Heritage Center, 156 S. Montezuma. Admission is free.

One-of-a-Kind DINING AT EURASIA
For the ultimate food gourmand, a dining experience is never the same — excitement is an endless pursuit with satisfaction an insatiable priority.
And as food trends ebb and flow so as to cater to such willful demands, one particular restaurant, Eurasia by Chef Michel, is now making its mark on Prescott’s food scene, fearlessly redefining standard notions in casual dining by offering culinary diversity and spontaneity in mouthfuls of divine choices.
Best epitomized as the new foodie destination for global cuisine, Eurasia preserves time-honored traditions of European and Asian dishes while exploring innovative culinary techniques and merging global flavors for a one-of-a-kind dining experience.
One Chef. Multi-Cuisine Connoisseur Building on his techniques and training in classical French cooking and a robust mastery of various global cuisines — influences and personal experiences collated since he dabbled in the kitchen at the age of 9 — Chef Michel Cottabarren is indeed one tough master cook with multidimensional skills and confidence to burn.
He has tempted his patrons with a synergy of dishes that truly bespoke his infamous unorthodox artisanship, just the way he pleased the palates of countless diners from far and wide during his previous stints as chef in hotels and restaurants in Lourdes, Paris, London, Honolulu, Bali, Kaohsiung, Shanghai, Tianjin, Kuching, Kuala Lumpur and Manila, among other cities in Europe, America and Asia.
Your European and Asian Food Trip Eurasia is a gastronomic tour that is the brainchild of American-born Frenchman, Chef Michel, and his Filipino wife, Clarissa Cottabarren, who also brings her global marketing experience in 23 countries to work for the family venture.
Quoting their brand story: “We ARE Eurasia. This is our brand story. This is our family. A melding of globally nomadic, richly diverse multicultural artists and thinkers whose unique cultural and creative perspectives are celebrated. This is our sense of purpose: To share our epicurean passion, wealth of travel and cultural experience.
“We are for real down-home goodness. We are for real human connections. We are for a bigger cultural community. We are global yet local. We are EURASIA.”

ACKER PARK GET BACK TO NATURE IN
It’s possible that Acker Park is the most popular park in Prescott you’ve never been to.
It’s just a mile east of Courthouse Plaza but tucked between rambling neighborhoods that segue seamlessly into the 80 acres donated to the City by James S. Acker, who also inspired the December Acker Night fundraisers for music scholarships.
It’s been preserved as open
space for people to take a leisurely hike and learn about the area’s vegetation and wildlife.
The educational opportunities are endless along the main loop trail, with signs identifying everything from oaks, ponderosas, pinyons and alligator junipers to banana yucca, cliffroses and skunkbush. Bluebird nesting boxes dot the southern end of the loop.
The loop’s main access is the trailhead where South Virginia Street dead ends at the northwest corner of the park. Users can cross the bridge over Granite Creek to reach the path, with the option of turning left onto the Hilltop Trail to reach the park’s highest point early in your journey or saving it for the end, by turning right on the Powerline Trail.
The Hilltop Trail weaves
ACKER PARK TRAILS
The trails within Acker Park are known collectively as the Barrie Mayes Memorial Trail System, honoring the tireless trail advocate who led the development of its trails.
The Mural Trail winds past several brilliant artworks to the entrance of the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, where park founder James S. Acker is buried. It hooks into the Summerfield Trail to the south end of the park.
The Hillcrest Trail takes you on a detour from the northeast section of the main loop trail. On the loop’s south end is the short Tom’s Trail, with a new “story walk” honoring five female minority STEM professionals.
through lush shrubbery before approaching the top of the hill and a stunning vista of most of Prescott’s major peaks, including Thumb Butte, Granite Mountain, Badger Mountain, Williams Peak and even the San Francisco Peaks by Flagstaff on clear days.
Metal panoramic signs identify each peak, and you’ll also find a labyrinth laid out on top of the
white granite at the summit.
Continuing south on the Ridge Trail, you’ll get familiar with Prescott’s eastern horizon and see many small signs bearing inspirational nature-related quotes from the likes of John Muir, John Burroughs and John Ruskin.
This is the best time of year to visit the park, as the trails gets muddy after winter rain and snow.
Acker Park’s main parking areas are at 421 S. Virginia St., reached by taking Virginia south from Gurley Street or turning east on Oak Street from Mount Vernon Street/Senator Highway. There are smaller lots where the Hillcrest Trail meets Eastwood Drive and Autumn Breeze Road at the southeast corner of the park, plus trailheads on Washington Street and Summerfield Drive best accessed by foot or bike.
Parking fees: None
Uses: Mountain biking, hiking Distance: 1.2 miles
Level of difficulty: Easy
Elevation: 5,475 feet to 5,610 feet
2024 World’s Oldest Rodeo ®
Prescott Frontier Days® Inc. presented the 2024 World’s Oldest Rodeo July 1-7 featuring eight rollicking performances with the finest cowboys and cowgirls in the West, the state’s second-longest parade, rodeo dances, cowboy church, mutton-bustin’ by the cutest kids and the most impressive horses and livestock on the circuit. Locals and tourists alike gathered at the hallowed Rodeo Grounds to cheer on old favorites and discover new talent — and friends along the way.
Sparks flew across the whole Fourth of July week as rodeo stars rode bulls and broncos, roped calves, wrestled steers and raced wild horses. Beloved traditional events were held with modern touches as the rodeo built to its culmination with the awarding of a belt buckle to All-Around Cowboy Kalai Nobriga of Kealakekua, Hawaii. The total payout was a record $339,401 for a total of 620 competitors.

Doc Holliday in Prescott!
Prescott Western Heritage Foundation presents “Doc Holliday Night” on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the Hassayampa Inn in Prescott, AZ.
Whiskey Row Historian Bradley G. Courtney and researcher D. Sue Kissell recently learned the exact location of the house where John Henry “Doc” Holliday lived during his time in Prescott. It was located off Montezuma Street in what is now the parking lot between Bashford Courts and Yavapai Title. A fundraising effort was launched to create a bronze plaque commemorating the location. The City of Prescott will place the plaque in their easement prior to the unveiling event on Wednesday, August 14th. Why August 14th? It is Doc Holliday’s birthday!
The plaque unveiling and dedication will take place at the location at 4:00 PM, followed by a celebration that
will be held at the Marina Room at the Hassayampa Inn at 5:00 PM.
Tickets are $25, available through the Prescott Western Heritage Center at 156 S. Montezuma on Prescott’s Whiskey Row. To purchase tickets, visit or call 928.910.2307. Each ticket will include one raffle ticket for a signed print, “Notorious”, by local artist Kuki Hargrave. Additional raffle tickets may be purchased at the event.
The celebration will include an 1880s fashion contest. Wear your finest period outfit to participate! Prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, and Most Historically Accurate, in both men’s and women’s categories.
Do you think you look like John Henry Holliday? A Doc Holliday lookalike contest will be judged by “Doc” impersonator Cory Allen from Tombstone.
Old West entertainment will be
provided by Jeff “Soapy” Smith, a great grandson of the original con man, and by Western character actor Pico Pistolero. Music will be provided by up-and-coming country artist Tyller Gummersall. Refreshments and a no host bar are included in the celebration. Meet dozens of re-enactors from local and statewide groups including the Prescott Regulators and Their Shady Ladies, the Whiskey Row Renegades, the Whiskey Row Social Club and Historical Society, and others.
A commemorative booklet, “Doc Holliday in Prescott”, written by Bradley Courtney, will be available at the event.
“The intention is for this to become an annual event celebrating local and Old West history,” said Dennis Gallagher, founder of the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation.
