DREW BALDRIDGE SAVORS SWEET NOTES OF SUCCESS

Photo courtesy of D rew Baldridge
The Big Sting country music festival is flying into Watson Lake Park once again this fall and headliner Drew Baldridge is excited to be riding a wave of success powered by a remix of a song he first released five years ago.

“This is one of our first headlines of festivals with actually a hit on the radio, which makes it a lot more fun,” he said. “Most of the time we’re just headlining with just a song that we’ve put out, so we’re super excited to have a No. 1 song and bring it to Prescott.”

“She’s Somebody’s Daughter” grabbed the top of the country radio airplay charts in the U.S. and U.K. around Labor Day but has been a TikTok and streaming hit since 2021, when Baldridge released the remix he’d created for his wife to dance with her father to at their wedding. After it quickly racked up 10 million views, “to be honest, I thought we’d be getting calls from every record company in Nashville, but that didn’t really happen,” he said.

“So the reason why it had a second life is last year, I put my own record label together and put it out to radio all by myself.” It’s the first time an artist’s first No. 1 single has been self-funded, rather than promoted by a record label.

BACKYARD DEAL

Baldridge hasn’t had a record deal since 2019, when the company that put out his first album went out of business three months later. Ever since he’s been doing everything he can think of to get himself and his music out to the public, including a pandemic-era social media post offering to play in his fans’ backyards: “I thought I would get five or 10 requests, and we got 20some thousand. So I went around

this country for two or three years and played in 300 backyards. And we actually stopped in Arizona and played in a couple of people’s backyards there.”

He said his backyard and smalltown concerts gave him the chance to play for and connect to his fan base, rather than obsessing about the Nashville music industry.

“These are the people I make music for, and I don’t need to make something fancy or that sounds cool or tries to sound like Nashville or anything. It’s just stuff that’s real to me and real to these small-town folks. That’s where my fans are and that’s where the music I make is needed.”

His career has soared as a result, taking him to the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards show

and the Grand Ole Opry over the summer. But he’s still thrilled to play at local venues and festivals and promises a rollicking good time for everyone there.

“There’s a lot of songs I’ve been putting out over the last couple of years, there’s one called ‘Big Prayers,” and another off my album called ‘Legacy’ that I really love,” he said. “When you come to my concert we’ll be playing ‘Imma,’ and it’s one of the most fun songs to play live, we just have a great time. We like to include our own music but we also play some really fun covers from old-school country, there’s kind of something for everyone,” he said.

Baldridge will take the stage at the Big Sting festival at 8:30 PM Oct. 11.

Prescott PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Trey Friddle B and

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?

Trey Friddle Band: We started playing together about two years ago, but I’ve been playing music with these boys pretty much my whole life.

My pops Johnny Friddle plays bass in the band. He introduced me into the world of music and taught me the first guitar chords that sent me on my way. Jacob Robbins is our drummer and he was actually my section leader in drumline my freshman year of high school. He’s been with me since the start of this dream.

Steve Robbins is the tactical banjo. When his son Jake and I were in the backroom of his house bashing away at whatever we could play, he bought a banjo and re-learned just to jam. Charlie (Bubba) Auxier and I have been playing music together for about the past five years. We cut our teeth together in a heavy metal band in high school, and now he shreds the mandolin and guitar in the TFB.

Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play?

Trey Friddle Band: We have always said the genre of music we play is “gruntry” music, which is a mix between country and grunge. I am heavily influenced by bands like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots. I am also very influenced by the Texas country rock scene, with bands like Whiskey Myers, Koe Wetzel and Treaty Oak Revival.

Grunge has heavy guitar, pounding drums and loud, gruff, vocal stylings, but at the same time has beautiful melodies and lyrics. Country music tells stories better than any genre. It can be dark at times and also very happy and light.

From left: Bubba Auxier, Jacob Robbins, Trey Friddle, Johnny Friddle, Steve Robbins

Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?

Trey Friddle Band: : Just have fun at your shows with your crowd. The energy you put off as a performer will affect your entire performance.

Prescott NOW: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for?

Trey Friddle Band: We’ve actually joked about writing a song called Play for the Benches because we have literally played for just benches before. Our biggest crowd was about 1,200 people at Roadrunner Saloon in New River. Some of our other biggest shows are the past few New Year’s Eve shows at Whiskey River Tavern. The energy has been unmatchable.

Prescott NOW: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?

Trey Friddle Band: When it comes to song writing, it could be watching a movie, listening to other music artists or even just having casual conversation. When I hear or see anything that inspires me, I try to write it down and see how it flows. When it comes to my performance, instead of just playing the music, I want to feel like the music is coming out of me.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?

Trey Friddle Band: I’ve been coming to Prescott since I was a kid. I knew that people come here to have a good time and listen

to good music, and I got into this business to play for those exact kind of people.

It all started at Whiskey River Tavern. We’ve been lucky enough to be embraced by the community here and play everywhere from Creekside in Mayer to Matt’s Saloon to The Big Sting Festival at Watson Lake. We even heard when we were here for New Year’s that my debut EP The In Between was being played in the Founding Father’s Collective as part of their local musician showcase.

See Trey Friddle on October 26th at 1 PM at Whiskey River Tavern.

Prescott Rough Rider Dies a Hero in Cuba

“Former Prescott, AZ Mayor Killed in Fighting in Cuba,” screamed newspaper headlines on July 2, 1898 announcing the death of Prescott’s favorite son William Owen “Buckey” O’Neill.

A prominent display at the Western Heritage Center, 156 S. Montezuma St., honors the soldiers of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry of the Spanish-American War, better known as Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. O’Neill served as captain of Company A.

Born in 1860 in St. Louis, O’Neill arrived in Prescott, Arizona Territory, in 1880. He was employed as a newspaper editor, miner, sheriff and politician. His avocation was gambling, which resulted in his nickname “Buckey” from his tendency to “buck the Tiger,” while playing games of chance against the odds.

O’Neill was hired by Phoenix lawman Henry Garflas in the early

1880s but moved to Prescott where he served as editor of the Arizona Miner before being elected captain of the Arizona Greys, a local militia unit. When the Greys served as honor guard at the hanging of a convicted horse thief and the trap was sprung, O’Neill fainted, causing him severe embarrassment.

In 1888, O’Neill was elected Yavapai County sheriff. Shortly into his term, four masked miscreants robbed the Atlantic and Pacific eastbound train near Diablo Canyon, east of Flagstaff. After a week of tracking, O’Neil’s posse caught up with the bandits and a firefight ensued. The robbers were arrested, convicted and sent to the Territorial prison in Yuma.

In 1889, O’Neill married Pauline Schindler, a schoolteacher. An early advocate for women’s suffrage, she engaged in civic and charitable

endeavors following her husband’s death, even serving in the state Legislature.

In 1898, as tensions between Spain and the United States heightened principally over the harsh treatment of Cubans by Spanish authorities, President McKinley called for 125,000 volunteers. O’Neill was one of the first to enlist.

After training in San Antonio and Tampa, the unit went to Cuba. It was at the foot of the San Juan Heights, awaiting orders to advance and under fire from Spanish Mauser rifles, that O’Neill met his fate.

Convinced an officer must display immense courage, he refused to take cover, commenting that “the Spanish bullet has yet to be molded that can kill me.” Within seconds an enemy bullet found its mark. He is buried at Arlington in a hero’s grave.

PARK PLAZA LIQUOR & DELI:

A CULINARY GEM IN DOWNTOWN PRESCOTT

Story and photos by Park Plaza Liquor & Deli

Nestled in the heart of historic downtown Prescott, just two blocks west of the Courthouse Plaza, Park Plaza Liquor and Deli has been a beloved dining destination since its founding in 2007.

Established by Prescott native Trevor Phillips, the restaurant aims to provide quality food and drink at reasonable prices. It has grown significantly over the years while maintaining its dedication to excellence.

The menu at Park Plaza Liquor and Deli is approachable and varied, curated by Executive Chef Rick Garcia. Guests can enjoy a range of casual dining options from appetizers and salads to sandwiches, wood-fired pizzas, burgers and mac and cheese. The restaurant also boasts an impressive selection of beverages, with 26 craft beers on tap, 24 wines by the glass, and an extensive array of canned and bottled beers and wines.

Chef Garcia, who joined the team in 2022, brings a wealth of culinary experience and a passion for food that began in his youth in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His background includes stints at notable establishments such as the Coyote Cafe, Scottsdale’s Avalon and the Hotel Valley Ho. Most recently, he served as the executive sous chef at Hearth ‘61 at Paradise Valley’s Mountain Shadows Resort, showcasing his expertise and dedication to the culinary arts.

Park Plaza Liquor and Deli is not just about great food and drink; it’s also a vibrant community hub.

The restaurant hosts weekly sampling events, monthly pairing dinners and participates in local events, making it a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Familyowned and operated, it continues to be a cornerstone of the Prescott dining scene.

Regularly voted the best pizza in Prescott by the Daily Courier’s Reader’s Choice Awards, Park Plaza Liquor and Deli is a testament to quality, affordability, and community spirit.

Yavapai County Fair

On Sept. 5-8 the 111th annual Yavapai County Fair covered the historic fairgrounds in Prescott with exhibits, rides, game, vendor and food booths, livestock and hobby shows, concerts and everything else that makes up this most American of gatherings. Wildman Phil, Pirates Parrot Shows, Leapin’ Louies and magicians galore kept the crowds entertained between exhibits, and demonstrations and local favorites like Tyller Gummersall, Well Dressed Wolves, Cassandra Long and J. David Sloan. The Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo helped bring the festivities to a close with a wild horse race and ranch rodeo performance.

BUFFALO SOLDIERS

Eric Reed, Presenter

Eric Reed became obsessed with the history and legacy of the black soldiers while a Sergeant and twenty-six-year member of the Phoenix Police Dept. Since his retirement he has been telling their stories for over twenty years thru presentations, displays, and uniform reenactments.

How was it that the oppressed became the oppressor and then be honored by their enemy by calling them “Buffalo Soldiers.”

The “Buffalo Soldier” name would hence be applied to all members of the armed services, male or female from 1866 at its formation to 1948 when all the armed services were integrated. Executive Order 9981

Arizona’s Christmas City Celebrates Full Season of Holiday Cheer

Festivities kick off with the 27th annual Holiday Light Parade & Bonfire Festival Saturday, Nov. 30 at 6 PM on Cortez Street. Led by Santa, the parade features more than 40 illuminated floats and local school bands.

The fun continues at Mile High Middle School’s field 7 to 8:30 PM with a bonfire, music, Santa and reindeer games for the kids.

Prescott’s 42nd annual Christmas Parade and the 70th annual Courthouse Lighting happen the next Saturday, Dec. 7. The parade, 1 to 3 PM, will fill downtown Prescott with floats, marching bands and other music. After the parade, kids can visit Santa on the Courthouse Plaza until 5 PM.

The Courthouse Lighting event — with live music — begins at 5 PM, and then watch as the Courthouse and more than 80 trees light up at 6 PM, followed by fireworks.

A free shuttle service will be available from the Prescott High School parking lot to Granite Street.

The 36th annual Acker Night will be Friday, Dec. 13, with an opening ceremony at 5 PM on Gurley Street. People can then stroll through downtown Prescott businesses, taking in the holiday lights and listening to live music from more than 500 performers. All tips to artists provide music lessons and instruments to local youth and support school music programs. A free shuttle service is provided from Frontier Village Shopping Center off AZ-69.

Next up is the 3rd annual Christmas Village & Christkindl Market Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 on West Goodwin Street. Inspired by a centuries-old European tradition, it features holiday gift items

from more than 20 local vendors, German-style foods and a Beer & Mulled Wine Garden.

Ring in the New Year at the 14th annual New Year’s Eve Boot Drop on historic Whiskey Row. The celebration — with music, food trucks, games, giveaways and firework — starts at 7 PM, on Tuesday, Dec. 31. You can experience a boot drop at 10 PM and another at midnight as a 6-foot, illuminated cowboy boot descends from the Palace Building.

“We’re thrilled to host one of Arizona’s largest New Year’s celebrations,” says Matt Brassard, organizer with Whiskey Row Boot Drop, LLC.

Events are presented by Desert Financial Credit Union, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Findlay Toyota, Friends of the Jersey Lilly and the City of Prescott.

Open Houses Showcase Hallelujah Horsemanship

Anyone who wants to learn more about horses and how to relate to them should check out one of Hallelujah Horse Ranch’s Open House events, held on the second Saturday of every month, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM May through December and 1:00 to 3:00 PM January through April.

“The (16,000 square-foot) arena is huge, so we can do everything in all kinds of weather,” said Deborah Lindsay, co-founder and lead trainer at the equestrian center set on a 200-acre ranch in the midst of Prescott’s Granite Dells. “And it’s real tall, almost like being in a church.”

The monthly open houses begin with information about the ranch and its activities, followed by a tour of the ranch and its inhabitants, who range from slaughter yard

rescues to “Royal Horses of Spain” or PREs, an abbreviation for Pura Raza Española. These Andalusian horses have been certified as part of a bloodline that stretches back to Spain in the Middle Ages and suitable for carrying it into the future.

The events serve as an introduction to the ranch, which houses 23 horses, mini-horses and mini-donkeys in roomy paddocks with shelters rather than small stalls. The visitors learn every horse’s backstory, no matter how regal or humble the circumstances they came from and get to pet as many horse noses as are offered to them.

After the tour the audiences are treated to a dressage performance by one of the “royal” horses, whose barn name is Praise and registered name is Sedutectora del Sol. “You’ve

heard of American Idol? This horse is PRE Idol,” Lindsay said.

The ranch offers lessons and classes for ages 4 and older, boards horses and hosts events including horse shows and Lindsay’s “deep dive” talks about the PREs, which are offered several times a year. The ranch’s popular stick-horse races for kids, who are invited to build and bring their own steed, may be added to the open houses.

This month’s Hallelujah Horse Ranch Open House will be held Oct. 12. To reach the ranch, take Larry Caldwell Drive to the intersection with Phippen Trail, then drive south on the dirt road to the barn.

For more information call 928.374.1234 , email cowgirlwithdog@yahoo.com or visit the Hallelujah Horse Ranch Facebook page.

MEET LOCAL AUTHORS NOV. 2 at Prescott Public Library

Yavapai County is rich with talent, including a vibrant community of writers — some of whom have gone on to become published authors.

In addition to carrying books from many local authors, the library seeks to foster the writing community in other ways, including through targeted programming. On the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 PM, the library hosts Prescott Writers lectures that cover a variety of topics about writing, editing and publishing.

The library also will celebrate this thriving community in a special way at our upcoming Local Author Fair. On Saturday, Nov. 2, 11 AM to 2 PM, the community is invited to meet and greet more than 25 local authors. These authors will have copies of their books for sale and will be available to talk about their books and writing. With authors representing stories for all ages and including a range of genres both in fiction and nonfiction, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the creative writing culture of the Yavapai County area.

Solstice Flute Camp Teachers’ Concert Delivers Magic

What do you get when you mix a handful of internationally renowned recording artists together for the sole purpose of soloing, jamming and pulling the community together? Something memorable? Exciting? Emotional? Soul-freeing?

The simple answer is: Yes to all. Yet these words are not nearly adequate to describe the magic of that Aug. 23 evening.

These musicians, instructors from the Solstice Flute Camp, hosted at Chapel Rock Camp and Conference Center, capped off a week in August of musical instruction, workshops and camaraderie, for an enchanting evening of inspired improvisation and soul-stirring tunes weaving Native American flute and world music.

Rona Yellow Robe started the evening with her soulful original songs interspersed with her haunting, earthy Native American

flute solos, beginning the vibe that intensified throughout the night. She finished her set with an original blues instrumental (who would have ever thought one could play blues like that on a Native flute?).

Fellow Solstice instructor Joseph L. Young accompanied her on saxophone before taking on the next set with his mix of original tunes while showcasing his mastery of the Native American flute and penny whistle.

Suzanne Teng performed on several flutes, including the Indonesian suling, a Turkish ney and the Native American flute, giving the audience a delightful taste of more world music. Suzanne’s husband Gilbert Levy accompanied her on percussion.

Shelly Morningsong and her husband Fabian Fontenelle, both in their colorful traditional Zuni/Omaha

dress, wove a musical tapestry of original songs and modern versions of ancestral Zuni songs, many of these to the percussive traditional dancing of Fabian.

Kalani Das put the finishing touches on this evening with his set, inviting the performers back on stage to accompany him on his audienceresponse song Namaste, which brought the audience to fever pitch, swaying, clapping and dancing over every bit of available floor space.

Throughout the performance, the audience connected with the past, reveled in the present and left with hope for the future. And it all started with a simple Native American flute at Solstice.

Mark your calendars! The next Solstice Flute Teachers’ Concert will be Friday, Aug. 22, 2025. For more information about Solstice, please visit www.solsticeflute.org.

REALTORS® Ensure Safety in Real Estate

During September, REALTORS® across the country took part in trainings and programming to ensure they are keeping not only themselves, but their clients safe in every step of a real estate transaction.

Buying or selling a home is one of the largest financial transactions a person will ever make. While it can be an exciting time, it also involves various risks that can impact both finances and personal safety. REALTORS® play a critical role in safeguarding their clients throughout the process acting as more than just a guide.

One of the key ways REALTORS® help keep clients safe is by navigating the legal and financial intricacies of real estate transactions. Without their expertise, buyers and sellers easily can fall into traps such as signing unfavorable contracts or

accepting illegitimate offers.

REALTORS® are trained to identify potential red flags that could put clients at risk. By performing due diligence and negotiating on behalf of their clients, they ensure that buyers and sellers are well-protected from fraud or financial loss.

Client safety extends beyond the bounds of financial security — physical safety is also a concern when viewing properties or opening your home. These experts help vet neighborhoods, owners and properties, ensuring that clients are not walking into unsafe situations.

Before showing a property, REALTORS® typically conduct inspections, confirming that homes meet safety codes and are free of major issues. When selling a home, they ensure that prospective buyers are pre-screened, and that showings

are scheduled in a controlled manner.

REALTORS® often use lockboxes with unique codes to limit access to the property, and stay present during showings to deter any potential bad actors.

In today’s digital climate, real estate transactions have become grounds for scams. From phishing emails to wire fraud, there are numerous ways that criminals target buyers and sellers.

The Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® provides resources for our members to protect their clients, ranging from lockboxes to education on best practices. The Arizona Department of Real Estate has also put in place new licensee renewal requirements. Starting in 2025, all REALTORS® renewing their licenses will need to take courses on current issues including deed-fraud, Arizona water usage and fire safety.
