BUILDING ARIZONA... ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

Bucky’s, Yavapai Casinos Chefs Win Top Honor

The Food and Beverage Management Team at Bucky’s and Yavapai Casinos have received the prestigious Arizona Indian Gaming Association’s People’s Choice Award.

The award was the culmination of the AIGA Chef’s Challenge, a culinary battle represented by eight of Arizona’s premier casino and resort chefs. The AIGA Expo was held at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa in October.

The team included Food and Beverage Director Chef Alex Riviera, Chef Will Caster, Chef Mert Dorsey and Food and Beverage Manager Grant Routson.

The theme for this year’s challenge was Native Flavors:

Arizona is Your Pantry, allowing participants to showcase their skills while incorporating Arizona’s local ingredients. The meal was prepared on site and served to 200 guests who voted for the People’s Choice Award, declaring R iviera and his team the award winners.

The winning menu consisted of roasted lamb with prickly pear demi and cheese stuffed courgette flowers served on roasted poblano corn cakes.

Prescott PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Funk Frequency

From left: Neil Orlowski, Steve Beals, Julie Malinowski, Jon Pool, Michael Weight

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?

Funk Frequency: Wow, time flies — 13 wonderful years!

Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play?

Funk Frequency: Mostly ‘70s and ‘80s funk and disco and R&B.

Prescott NOW: What about them inspires you?

Funk Frequency: It’s just fun! It’s the type of music that gets people out of their chairs and onto the dance floor. It doesn’t matter if you’re 2 years old, or 92 years young, or anywhere in between, it’s the music that gets everyone together and having a blast.

Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?

Funk Frequency: Not only are we the only band in this community playing this genre of music, but we like to make our performances more about the people than the band. We like to involve our audience in the performance, get off stage and into the crowd to make them feel like they are part of the show. We are truly grateful that we have a big following, and we can always count on them to show up and dance.

Funk Frequency is the only band in Northern Arizona to play ‘70s and ‘80s funk ‘n disco dance music. Musicians playing real instruments. We are a dance band that feeds off the crowd dancing.

Prescott NOW : What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?

Funk Frequency: We have played for a very few people to a few thousand

people. As long as people are dancing and having fun.

Prescott NOW: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?

Funk Frequency: It’s Prince, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and

contemporary artists such as Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. And the great guitarists-musicians: Nile Rogers, Jimmy Page, James Brown, George Benson.

Great Food. DRINKS. Live Music.

Fire & Sword Speakeasy Opens at Historic Hotel

The Fire & Sword Speakeasy is now open beneath the historic Hotel St. Michael in downtown Prescott. This new hotspot promises a blend of history, entertainment and ambiance, offering locals and visitors a chance to step back into a bygone era with modern comforts.

At the site of the former Burke Hotel, famously known as Prescott’s “only fireproof hotel” until it burned down in 1900, the Fire & Sword Speakeasy pays homage to its storied past. Legend has it that during the fire, bar patrons dragged their whiskey and poker tables to the town square, where they watched the flames while gambling. Despite the destruction, a local newspaper continued to advertise the hotel as “fireproof” for weeks afterward.

Rebuilt in 1901 using many of the original bricks, the building was later renamed Hotel St. Michael, invoking the protection of the Archangel Michael. Traditionally depicted wielding a flaming sword or spear, St. Michael’s spirit is celebrated in the name and logo of the speakeasy.

The underground space has operated under various names for over a century, with a notable period of secrecy during the Prohibition years.

“We think the community has waited a long time to see this space reopen,” Hotel St. Michael owner Shane Ortega says. “The remodel took us about seven months, and we kept the old bar that was here from the early ‘80s. We added a new ceiling, bathrooms and kept the old

brick walls. We’re proud of how it all turned out and are excited to share it with everyone.”

The Fire & Sword Speakeasy invites patrons to enjoy a full-service bar, live music and a cozy atmosphere featuring comfortable cowhide bar stools, private tables and lounge couches. Whether you’re a local nightlife enthusiast or a guest at the Hotel St. Michael, this establishment offers a perfect blend of historic charm and contemporary flair.

“We are thrilled to open Fire & Sword Speakeasy, honoring the rich history of this location and creating a space for new memories,” says General Manager Regina Kilmer. “We’re excited for guests to experience our unique offerings and become part of our story.”

Fir Real or Faux?

Choosing between a real or fake Christmas tree is a holiday conundrum many families face each year.

Living in the Prescott area, surrounded by towering pines and an abundance of wildlife, makes this decision feel even more meaningful. With nature right at your doorstep, opting for a real tree can seem like the natural choice, but both options have their perks.

So, how do you pick?

Fir real

For nature lovers, real trees offer an authentic connection to the outdoors. They fill your home with that nostalgic pine scent, and each tree is unique in shape and size. Locally sourced trees also support local farmers and reduce the environmental impact of shipping. Additionally, real trees can be composted or turned into mulch, making them a more eco-friendly option when disposed of properly.

Plus, they provide a temporary home for small wildlife like birds if you repurpose them outdoors after the holidays.

However, real trees do require maintenance. You’ll need to keep them well-watered to avoid a fire hazard, and cleaning up needles can be a bit of a chore. If you have allergies, a real tree might trigger reactions, and they only last for one season.

Faux

Fake trees offer convenience. They can be reused year after year and don’t require watering or cleanup. Many artificial trees also come pre-lit, saving you time and frustration when decorating. If you choose a high-quality one, they can look almost as real as the genuine article.

On the flip side, artificial trees are made from non-biodegradable materials and often have a larger carbon footprint due to manufacturing and shipping. They also lack the fresh pine scent and natural imperfections that make real trees special.

Branching out

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your values. If you love the experience of choosing and caring for a natural tree, go real. But if convenience and reusability are more important, a faux tree might be the better choice. Either way, your tree will light up your home and your holiday season!

The 36th annual Acker Night will be Friday, Dec. 13, with an opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Gurley Street. People then stroll through downtown Prescott businesses, taking in the holiday lights and listening to live music from more than 500 performers. All tips to artists provide music lessons and instruments to local youth and support school music programs. A free shuttle bus service will run between Yavapai College and downtown Prescott starting at 4:30 p.m.

Dec. 14 and Dec. 15, the Christmas Village & Christkindl Market will return to West Goodwin Street in downtown Prescott, bringing the

magic of a European Christmas market for its third year. With over 20 vendors offering holiday gifts and German-style food, the event also features a Beer & Mulled Wine presented by JARD LLC.

This year, attendees can enjoy an outdoor ice-skating rink.

Ring in the new year at the 14th annual New Year’s Eve Boot Drop on historic Whiskey Row. The celebration starts at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31. You can experience boot drops at 10 p.m. and midnight as a 6-foot illuminated cowboy boot descends from the Palace Building. Enjoy live music, fireworks, food trucks, carnival games and giveaways.

Sharlot Hall Museum Unveils Historic Fashion

The Sharlot Hall Museum is thrilled to announce its latest exhibit: Snaps and Clasps: Fashion from the Collection in the Lawler Building’s Center Gallery. This immersive exhibit offers a glimpse into over a century of fashion, tracing the evolution of style in Prescott and northern Arizona from 1870 to 1970.

From the practical and durable garments of early settlers to the vibrant and elegant mid-century designs, Snaps and Clasps presents a rich tapestry of fashion history. Visitors will discover how clothing has been a significant part of community identity, reflecting societal changes and personal expression.

The exhibit features an array of clothing, advertisements and artifacts, highlighting influential trends from the Victorian Era through Hollywood’s golden age.

“Fashion is often associated with metropolises like New York or Paris, but our exhibit reveals how Prescott has crafted its unique sartorial identity,” says Stuart Rosebrook, Executive Director at Sharlot Hall Museum. “By showcasing the past, we celebrate the rich history and creativity that has shaped the fashion landscape in our region.”

Key highlights include:

Victorian influences:

Explore the intricate designs of bustles, corsets and petticoats, revealing the elegance and challenges of 19th-century fashion.

Roaring ‘20s flapper style: Witness the revolutionary shift to shorter hemlines, beaded dresses and the iconic flapper look that defined a generation.

Mid-century elegance: Discover the glamorous era of cocktail dresses, sports coats and Western wear, inspired by Hollywood stars and local fashion houses like Thunderbird Fashion House.

The exhibit also pays homage to Thunderbird Fashion House, a pivotal player in Prescott’s fashion scene, known for its Southwestinspired designs and significant contributions to the local economy.

Snaps and Clasps invites fashion enthusiasts, history buffs and local residents to explore the fabric of Prescott’s past and celebrate the diverse styles that have influenced generations.

Shine Bright, Stay Safe

Whether your lights are already hung or it’s still on the to-do list, follow these tips to ensure your home glows safely this holiday season.

Before stringing

• Inspect your lights for broken bulbs, frayed wires or exposed wiring. Faulty lights can cause electrical shocks or fires.

• Use LED lighting to save energy, stay cooler and reduce the risk of overheating.

• Spread out plugs and use surge protectors. Too many lights in one outlet can lead to electrical overloads.

• Ensure lights are labeled for outdoor use, secure them properly and avoid using nails or staples that can damage wires.

• Avoid placing lights near flammable items, especially dry Christmas trees.

• Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) automatically shut off circuits if moisture or electrical problems are detected and are recommended for outdoor use.

Once the lights are up

• Ensure cords are out of reach from children and pets to prevent pulling or chewing.

• Check regularly for burned-out bulbs, and ensure no wires are exposed to snow or water.

• Turn off your lights when you leave the house or go to bed. Timers are an easy way to manage this.

Time to unplug

• Always turn off lights and unplug them before taking them down.

• Avoid tangling by wrapping lights around a spool or in loops. Store in a dry, cool place.

• This also is a good time to look for sales to replace lights for next year.

The Spice & Tea Exchange® Opened in Historic Landmark

Jim and Tammy Ryan have long dreamed about opening their own Spice & Tea Exchange location. With a family cabin in Prescott since 1982, Jim has spent much of his life in Prescott and watched his dad rope in the Prescott Rodeo for many years. Thanks to the support of the community and fellow store owners, the Ryans are finally seeing their dreams come to fruition.

The Spice & Tea Exchange of Prescott, at 101 E. Gurley St., opened its doors in July and celebrated a grand opening in October.

“We love this community and the people of Prescott,” says Tammy Ryan, franchise owner of The Spice and Tea Exchange of Prescott. “Our favorite part of being in the store is meeting people. We love the Plaza and all the activities that happen here. There has been an outpouring of support from the locals, and we are so grateful to them. And we absolutely love this building and its history.”

The shop is part of downtown district steeped in Wild West history. Doc Holiday and Virgil Earp, brother

of Wyatt, called Prescott home, frequenting saloons just across the street from where the store is now.

The shop’s building is on the National Register of Historic Places as the longest-running bank in Arizona, open from 1877 to 1998. It was the first bank in the Arizona Territory, reflecting the mining boom and gold rush of the 1800s. Designed in the classical style with rustic brick and tall columns, the building’s historic feel complements the old world feel of glass jars displaying The Spice & Tea Exchange’s sourced spices, herbs, aromatics, salts, sugars, honey and more, making it feel like a Western apothecary.

The in-house spice master hand mixes custom spice blends, while the tea bar offers hot and cold brews of the shop’s many tea varieties, including Tammy’s favorite, Blueberry Black. Jim’s original favorite spice blend was the Kahuna Seasoning Salt, but he says the store is literally a foodie and griller paradise, and he is always finding a new favorite.

Día de los Muertos Celebrated with Immersive Experience

The centerpiece of the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration at Prescott Valley Town Center was a spectacular 12,000-square-foot installation by Haus of Themes, featuring giant calaveras (sugar skulls) and interactive augmented reality (AR) elements.

The immersive experience included intricate displays, photo ops and life-like animations, offering an educational journey through the traditions of Día de los Muertos.

Brad Fain, President and CEO of Fain Signature Group, said the group was “excited to offer awareness and educational opportunities about Día de los Muertos and other culturally significant events, enriching the lives of families, children and

individuals in our community.”

In addition to the immersive exhibit, the celebration included performances by folklórico dancers, Mariachi Continental Azteca, Grupo Generación, food trucks, kids’ activities, sugar skull face painting, a parade and an Ofrenda contest sponsored by Yavapai College, where participants created traditional altars. Prizes included a Chromebook (1st place), Apple Air Pods (2nd place), and an Amazon gift card (3rd place).

The immersive exhibit was open Oct. 24 to Oct. 26 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, with the main event Nov. 2.

This celebration was presented by the Fain Family Foundation in collaboration with the Prescott Valley Chamber of Commerce Hispanic Business Association.
