PRESCOTT, ARIZONA was first settled with the discovery of gold in Granite Creek. The City was founded in 1864. President Abraham Lincoln named Prescott the first Territorial Capital of Arizona, a distinction the City held from 1864-67 and again from 1877-89. In 1891, Prescott became the Yavapai County seat. In 1888, Prescott held its first rodeo. To this day, it is known as the World’s Oldest Rodeo®. In 1900, a fire leveled the famous Whiskey Row and the county courthouse.
Notable figures from Prescott’s past include Doc Holliday and his mistress Big Nose Kate, who frequented the Palace and other Whiskey Row establishments. Sen. Barry Goldwater hailed from Prescott. His family owned a general merchandise store on Cortez Street in the downtown, and their name is still on the building.
Western history is not all Prescott has to offer. Prescott is nestled in the central highlands of Arizona at a mile-high elevation. The City is surrounded by the Prescott National Forest and has 145,000 acres of ponderosas, five lakes and 450+ miles of trails.

A Verde Valley excursion wouldn’t be complete without a journey up the hill to Jerome, the “City in the Sky.” Once a thriving mining camp of 15,000, Jerome acquired “ghost town” status by the 1960s. Today, entrepreneurs have restored many of the quaint buildings, and the town now dishes out artsy boutiques and panoramic views in equal measure.
SEDONA

The Mile-High Trail System contains approximately 106 miles of trails including Rails-to-Trails projects along the former Santa Fe Railroad, the Prescott Circle Trail System and the Greenways Trails System. The Prescott Circle Trail is a 56-mile network of trails that encircles all of Prescott with varied elevation from 5,140' to 6,690'. Welcome to the Prescott Heritage Trail! This self-guided historical walking tour brings Prescott’s rich history and heritage you in about an hour long walk around the famed Courthouse Plaza in the heart of our downtown. Be sure to check back with us in 2018, as we plan to double the number of sites on the Heritage Trail, and connect it with the City’s Greenways Trail system. We will also launch the Hunt for History, engaging youngsters explore Prescott heritage in their own special way.

1864 GOVERNOR’S MANSION
HISTORY HUNT
In the summer of 1864, workers under Samuel Blair built this log house for the governor’s home and office. It is the oldest building associated with Arizona Territory still standing on its original location. Undoubtedly the Mansion escaped demolition because of Sharlot Hall, who founded this Museum in the Governor’s Mansion in 1927.

Designated as during winter months the area around the Courthouse is home for unequaled holiday festivities. You won't want to miss anything!
Festivities begin in late November with the colorful Holiday Light Parade where elaborate decorated floats and holiday music will have you smiling. Ultimately, you may wind up at the community bonfire just up the street at Mile High Middle School. The first week of December features the colorful daytime Christmas Parade with more than 100 entries including almost everyone in town. If you’re lucky enough to be here in early December, you’ll beam when the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza lights turn the dark into a kaleidoscope of holiday colors. This year will be the 71st annual lighting. Join local students, townspeople and visitors in singing traditional Christmas carols.
Up the street two blocks, enjoy a Frontier Christmas staged by the Sharlot Hall Museum.
