Life – More Resilient Welcome to the summer edition of GenerousLiving, devoted to sharing stories of resiliency in health, medicine, relationships, life, finance, and community. And highlighting the role of philanthropy in a more resilient life. Indeed, resiliency plays a vital role for those who live, work, and play in the West Valley. “Live like someone left the gate open.” That’s the philosophy of one cancer patient and his wife who stay resilient in the fight against lung cancer. Read their story and others – about the resilient lives of two married couples, and what keeps healthcare workers resilient. To help you build a more resilient life, we’re sharing with you Sun Health Wellness resources and an Ask the Expert column that addresses an important question about financial resiliency that’s on everyone’s minds. Resiliency is essential for organizations too. At Sun Health Foundation, our resiliency is maintained and strengthened by the dedication of our volunteer members of Sun Health Foundation’s Board of Trustees. As our Board leadership transitions on July 1, we celebrate progress in the Generosity for Generations Campaign (now at 78% toward the $48 million goal) and look toward to the future of exceptional healthcare for the West Valley with continued support.
Resiliency is empowering. Support for superior healthcare and wellness programs through the Generosity for Generations Campaign helps West Valley residents overcome health challenges. It is your support for Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers and Sun Health Wellness that builds health resiliency. Thank you for all the ways you give back to make our community more resilient. Stay resilient. Stay well. Stay in touch.

Life, Love and Resilience Two couples share their stories Relationships based on love and trust that offer encouragement and support help bolster resilience. Sun Health Foundation asked two couples, one who recently celebrated 71 years of marriage and the other who are newlyweds… What keeps you resilient?
Shirley and Dwain Ehrlich, celebrating 71 years of love How does a couple celebrating 71 years of marriage stay resilient in both love and in life? For Shirley and Dwain Ehrlich, residents at Sun Health’s The Colonnade Community, adding in humor and
adventure — and a dash of friendly mischief — are ingredients for the perfect recipe. “Finding opportunities to laugh has helped us through the ups and downs of life,” says Shirley, a retired surgery nurse manager. The couple met in Lincoln, Nebraska, in a most unconventional way. When she was 16, Shirley removed the valve caps of Dwain’s car parked in front of a house where he sat on a porch swing with her friend on a date. Shirley’s mischievous act was her attempt to interrupt them (not to do harm) in hopes her friend would instead consider going with her to a slumber party. It wasn’t until two years later that Dwain asked Shirley for a date — three times before she finally accepted his invitation to go dancing. She soon discovered Dwain’s mischievous side, too. Their romance blossomed. “Finding opportunities to laugh has helped us through the ups and downs of life.” —SHIRLEY EHRLICH

After they married, Shirley completed nursing school and Dwain served in the Korean War as a second lieutenant teaching draftees squadron infantry tactics. He went to college for a history degree, later followed by graduate school for a master’s degree and ultimately a doctorate in education. He then became dean of a local college. They moved to Wisconsin where both of their careers flourished. Throughout their lives, the Ehrlichs have experienced both joy and sadness, including joy from the birth of their five children and heartbreak from the loss of two. “In our grief, we’ve had to learn to roll with the punches,” Shirley says. To help them find their way, the Ehrlichs kept their focus on memorymaking good times with family and friends that included much laughter. The couple chose to retire in Arizona because of the warmer, drier climate. They not only love living in the West Valley, they enjoy life at The Colonnade that supports their active and resilient lives.
The Ehrlichs not only have enjoyed playing pranks; their friends have, too. One April Fool’s Day, Shirley sewed Dwain’s underwear shut. Then there was the time friends surprised them with a hand-painted mural of the “Varga Girl” on their bathroom wall. Today, the two still love to tease and surprise each other and find reasons to laugh. We’ve all heard that laughter is the best medicine, and it’s true. Studies show laughter relieves stress, elevates mood and makes you more resilient. It’s also good for keeping relationships resilient, as the Ehrlichs prove. Shirley and Dwain Ehrlich
The good times they’ve share include several hobbies. Shirley loves sewing and designing. Dwain has a passion for cars (owning 77), boats (seven), and an airplane (he learned to fly in a cow pasture). Together, they’ve loved boating and ballroom dance. Today they still dance and make time for date night each week. They also enjoy bocce ball. Oh yes, and they love a little good-hearted mischief.
Their love of philanthropy also has gone the distance. For 20 years, the Ehrlichs have made donations to Sun Health Foundation campaigns, including the Generosity for Generations Campaign. While they thankfully haven’t needed much medical care themselves, it’s important to them that their generosity helps others enjoy more days of laughter following healthcare challenges. Cheers to Shirley and Dwain for many more years of love and laughter — and every now and then a prank to keep things exciting.
Newlyweds Shannon and Gary Cheever In the twists and turns of life, it’s inspiring to know that a resilient mindset can help weather the changes and open doors to new possibilities. For newlyweds Shannon and Gary Cheever, fate truly played its hand and opened those doors to make way for new love when they met at Sun Health’s La Loma Village Community, in January 2021.
Gary moved to Phoenix in 1959 and joined Sperry Flight Systems. He also was the male vocalist with the Sperry 21-piece dance band. Later Gary started his own business in sales engineering, manufacturing and distribution. The company’s specialty was Custom DC Power Systems. The systems were on the space shuttle; they were used for seismic exploration systems in the petroleum industry,
Both Shannon and Gary lost their spouses in 2020, and both had moved to La Loma within a month of each other at the end of 2020. Shortly afterward, mutual friends invited Shannon and Gary to join them for dinner. “We just clicked,” Gary says. “A connection formed that we cannot explain.” “Shannon and I discovered our common interest in everything, including the fact that throughout our lives we both always accepted challenges and made things happen,” Gary says about their outlook on life. Their resilient mindset contributed to both of them having fulfilling careers.

After three months as an “inside” sales person, she was offered a company car and a trainee position to sell industrial products in Manhattan in the 1970s. Five years later she was promoted to a marketing manager position and moved to corporate headquarters in Denver, Colorado, where she and her husband lived for 25 years. Shannon has always loved to travel and to photograph the world. She has traveled to over 100 countries and is a member of the Travelers Century Club. She has self-published 17 photography books, and her photographs adorn her and Gary’s home. She is in the process of preparing her latest book From Siberia to Moscow. including an open cockpit biplane and a competition glider. Shannon grew up in the Midwest and spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco. Although she has a B.A. in sociology, her career was spent in the business world.
Almost one year after moving to La Loma Village, Gary and Shannon began to explore communities where they might be able to establish a home together. They found the perfect apartment at Grandview Terrace, one of Sun Health’s sister Life Plan communities. Here there was room for all of Gary’s aviation photographs and Shannon’s artwork. The Cheevers were married in March.
“Shannon and I discovered our common interest in everything, including the fact that throughout our lives we both always accepted challenges and made things happen.” —GARY CHEEVER
The couple maintains their resiliency by staying active and starting their day with a healthy smoothie and their daily exercise plan. They’ve enjoyed many of the fitness classes and other opportunities at Grandview Terrace and Sun Health Wellness Center, including the massages located in the building. “God has blessed us in so many ways,” Gary says. “We’re thankful for all we’ve received, and we’re looking forward to giving back some day to support healthcare in our community.
Resale Therapy: SUN HEALTH RESALE SHOPS To feel more resilient, go shopping! Studies show the act of making choices when shopping can help restore a feeling of control over our lives and give our minds a rejuvenating break from the stressors we face. That good feeling doubles when shopping with a purpose at the Sun Health resale shops. Shoppers not only refresh their mindsets, proceeds from shopping at the Sun Health Resale Boutique in Sun City and Sun Health Resale Shop in Sun City West directly benefit healthcare and wellness programs that impact lives of West Valley residents. “Shoppers are happy to know their dollars stay local and make an impact right here in this community,” says Sue Slezak, manager of the Sun Health Resale Boutique, 9843 W. Bell Road. That’s because proceeds from sales provide direct funding support to Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers and Sun Health’s wellness programs through the Generosity for Generations Campaign. “Saving time and money adds to the great feeling of shopping resale,” says Krystal Jones, manager of the Sun Health Resale Shop, 14445 R.H. Johnson Blvd. “Now more than ever, shopping resale is a fabulous way to fight inflation. People often visit our shops
first before going to the ‘big box’ stores. Plus, all purchases are sales-tax free.” Each boutique-like shop offers a remarkable selection of vintage, collectables and specialty items — some unique and one-of-a-kind. Shoppers enjoy a selection of distinctive and quality items. It’s a special shopping experience, with something new every day. To receive email alerts on weekly sales or to donate call (623) 974-1010 or email sue.slezak@sunhealth.org. The Sun Health Resale Shop is operated in partnership with the Sun City West Foundation.

Doctor Shares What Keeps Him Resilient Dr. Pedro Rodriguez Guggiari Dr. Pedro Rodriguez Guggiari says he will always remember where he was when he discovered his life’s purpose and his passion to become a physician. He was a boy at summer camp in Paraguay, South America.
—DR. PEDRO RODRIGUEZ GUGGIARI
“I was one of the kids at camp who had a terrible time with allergies, and I had a sprained an ankle and hurt my fingers,” Dr. Rodriguez Guggiari remembers. “Our camp counselor took care of me, and later in his life he, too, became a doctor. I experienced firsthand what it was like to have someone help me and it was such a good, comforting feeling.
After practicing for 26 years, 19 in Arizona, Dr. Rodriguez Guggiari says he loves practicing in the West Valley. In 2014, Dr. Rodriguez Guggiari and his wife, Dr. Marta Gonzales, opened their practice True Care MD in Peoria.
‘This feels right. I want to do the same for others,’ I thought to myself.
Dr. Rodriguez Guggiari also finds great fulfillment in being a mentor to the next generation of physicians as a member of the teaching faculty at the University of Arizona-College of Medicine Phoenix.
“I experienced firsthand how someone helped me and it was such a good feeling. I thought to myself, this feels right for me to do the same for others. It was one of the greatest camps in my life.” Today, an Internal Medicine Specialist and Chief of Staff at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, Dr. Rodriguez’s Guggiari’s passion has only grown stronger and serves to keep him resilient and dedicated to caring for his patients in the evolving world of healthcare. “Medicine is both my passion and a calling,” he says. “Helping others fulfills me intrinsically.”
8
“It is the conviction I have that I’m doing something meaningful and relevant that keeps me resilient,” he says. “Practicing medicine is the best place to start and end my day.”
Resiliency has been the mainstay his practice of medicine. Dr. Rodriguez Guggiari has had to adapt to the changes in healthcare delivery through the years including those stemming from COVID-19. He has both a resilient mindset and one of gratitude. He is thankful for all the good in medicine that he says outweigh the challenges. “It is the conviction I have that I’m doing something meaningful and relevant that keeps me resilient,” he says. “Practicing medicine is the best place to start and end my day.”
Dr. Pedro Rodriguez Guggiari
Dr. Rodriguez Guggiari says he also is grateful for the generosity of West Valley residents. “There are simply things we cannot achieve without them. They helped make possible advanced equipment that can perform lifesaving, life-improving procedures in orthopedics, cancer, urology and beyond. I can’t stress enough how important these are today and for our future.” “I’m very committed to the community and to the hospitals and feel intrinsically attached to the people here,” he says. “I don’t see myself anywhere else.”
Tips and Ways to Stay Resilient Doctor-Patient Communication is Key By Dr. Pedro Rodriguez Guggiari While doctor visits can sometimes feel intimidating, they are essential to maintaining your health. Here are some tips to help you feel more comfortable and make the most of your time together. Having more productive visits can help you build resiliency throughout your healthcare journey. Ask the Expert L. Birt Kellam | Chair, Generosity for Generations Campaign Member, Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees How can I plan for my financial future and still support superior healthcare through the Sun Health Foundation during these uncertain times?
Creating a Charitable Gift Annuity with Sun Health Foundation is simple. It may be established based on one or two people’s lives and the fixed, lifetime payout rate is based solely on the age of the participant(s) and not on any health requirements. The agreement is both easy to understand and easy to execute.
During times of market volatility like now, it is increasingly important to review or create a plan to preserve hard-earned income for the future. Establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity with a financially stable organization such as Sun Health Foundation is a good choice to accomplish this. If your plan includes making a lasting impact on healthcare in our community through a taxdeductible donation to Sun Health Foundation, a Charitable Gift Annuity can help you achieve this goal. Charitable Gift Annuities provide uncommonly high life-long payments as well as impressive charitable tax deductions. Rates continue to offer great incentives when compared to low interest rates on CDs and other investments. And we are pleased to report that payout rates are increasing in July for new participants.
With a Sun Health Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity, you can: • Receive an immediate tax deduction. • Choose payments to begin immediately or defer to a future start date. L. Birt Kellam
Funding a Charitable Gift Annuity with a donation of cash, stock or other securities will also help you avoid or reduce gift or estate taxes. Additionally, when funding a Charitable Gift Annuity with an appreciated asset, capital gains tax obligations at the time of the gift are avoided.
• Enjoy peace of mind with fixed quarterly income payments, completely free from market fluctuations. • Make a gift that can impact healthcare in our community.
For more information about Sun Health Foundation Charitable Gift Annuities, please call Gina Ore at (623) 471-9560 or visit our website for planned giving information and tools at: https://sunhealthfoundation.planningyourlegacy.org. We are happy to discuss your individual situation and provide a free, personalized, no-obligation Charitable Gift Annuity proposal.

Staying Resilient in the Fight Against Lung Cancer Sam McLaughlin and his wife Kathi share their inspiring story “Live like someone left the gate open.” When someone is given a second chance on life, this quote has even greater meaning. To Sam and Kathi McLaughlin, the words embody their philosophy to live life to its fullest and don’t hold back despite the challenges – a philosophy that has even greater meaning to them today following Sam’s recent bout with a rare form of lung cancer.
After having his lung removed, along with all of the cancer, Sam and Kathi have been filled with gratitude for his doctors and care teams at Banner Boswell Medical Center.
robotics along with traditional surgical methods. The couple is thankful for the expertise and the innovations in medical care they feel are extending Sam’s life.
Dr. Brett Broussard, thoracic surgeon with Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, performed the six-and-a-halfhour surgery at Banner Boswell. Because of the location of the tumor, Sam’s surgery included use of state-of-the-art
Sam’s healthcare story began when he mentioned a cough to his primary care physician. After a series of tests including a lung biopsy, his lung cancer was diagnosed. “I just hope it’s not too late,” Sam thought the day he learned his diagnosis. “Should I just let the cancer go or opt for treatment?” he contemplated. Dr. Broussard, his entire team and Sam’s oncologist sat down with Sam and Kathi to present the options, possible side effects and answer their questions. The decision was made to go with surgery. “During my three-day hospital recovery, Dr. Broussard and/or one of his team would come by every day to make sure I was comfortable and pain free,” Sam says.

“If I hadn’t known better, I would have thought I was the only patient there,”
he adds to acknowledge the attentive care he received. When it was time for Sam to be discharged from the hospital, he remembers Dr. Broussard entering his room at the same time an old rerun of “Heaven Can Wait” was showing on his in-room television. What an emotional moment that was for Sam and Kathi. Sam continues to recover from surgery at home and currently is receiving precautionary chemotherapy under the care of Dr. Vishangi Dave, Banner Health hematologist and medical oncologist. He and Kathi recognize that delivering superior healthcare is a huge team effort. “Dr. Broussard is truly one of the finest surgeons. He genuinely cares and goes above and beyond the call of duty for his patients and treated me like family. If we had more doctors like him, the world will be a better place,” says Sam, with tears in his eyes. “I want to thank and commend and ask that all the doctors, PAs, RNs and all others involved with my procedures

Both Sam and Kathi are quick to add their sense of humor plays a big part in their resiliency in coping with stress. They try to make laughter a part of every day.

and recovery are given Banner Health’s highest awards for their quick response to the findings and procedures that I’m sure saved and extended my life,” he adds. What keeps the couple resilient through this journey? “My wife Kathi,” Sam says. “Our faith,” Kathi says. “Every night I’ve prayed and asked God for a miracle,” says Kathi, tearing up. “And every morning I’ve picked up and held my wristbands that say, ‘Love God Expect a Miracle.’”
“During Sam’s recovery, there are times when he still coughs and catches his breath,” Kathi says. “I’ll be holding him, and then we’ll find something humorous about that moment and start to crack up with laughter. Throughout this journey, a sense of humor is so important.” Embracing every day their philosophy to live life with the gate wide open, Sam and Kathi look forward to sharing more laughter and good times together. They love hiking and travel, and their bucket list includes driving across country “to see our beautiful USA and spend time in Florida.” The couple are chronicling Sam’s healthcare journey by keeping a special jar with notes and expressions of gratitude for the exceptional medical care and technology that was there for them when they needed it. They plan to open the jar and read the messages on Jan. 1, 2023, to remember how far they’ve come as they look forward to a new year together.

What Keeps You Resilient?
Community and healthcare leaders share their secrets Many believe resiliency is a state of mind, body and spirit that helps us embrace our experiences, face our challenges, recover from loss and become stronger. Each of us has our own understanding of what keeps us going when we hit that wall and what is our own personal resiliency factor. Sun Health Foundation asked these community and healthcare leaders what keeps them going?
RON SYMIC Chair, Sun Health Foundation Events Committee Member, Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees Learning to swim “I couldn’t be that kid standing at the top of a 10-foot diving board looking down and over thinking it, I had to take that leap.”
MICHAEL BARNES
“Over a 38-year carrier at JAL there were times it seemed everything was working against me, and I would often think of a quote by Henry Ford: ‘Remember that aircraft take off against the wind, not with it.’
Vice President Wealth Management, FineMark National Bank & Trust Member, Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees
CINDY DAVIS Chief Nursing Officer Banner Boswell Medical Center “Resilience is being selfaware with the ability to bounce back, adapt, adjust to and recover from difficult or challenging experiences. I keep resilient with self-care, which includes a daily routine of meditation, reading, exercise, healthy food; along with connection to people who bring me joy — my spouse, children, grandchildren, close friends and church.”
“Resilience to me is to focus on what can be controlled, learn what I can from the challenges, and to be accountable to myself and to those who may need support.”
L. BIRT KELLAM Chair, Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generosity Campaign; Member, Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees
Mid life
“Helping raise philanthropic dollars for charitable organizations in our community has been a source of great pleasure in my life. When I see donors gifting to a charity in a major way, it makes me feel so happy because I know they will experience the many benefits of being involved in a meaningful way.
“Working at Japan Airlines and being responsible for reclamation of a 1985 crash site, resilience was knowing that I was the only one who had the power and the responsibility to pick myself up and keep going forward despite the obstacles.”
“On the other hand, if a prospective donor has told me that they do not want to be involved, it does make me feel sad, sometimes very sad, that they do not see the value to themselves and to the charity.
As a young adult “It’s my reaction to adversity, not adversity itself, that determines how my life’s story will develop.”

Chair, Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees
“I do try to learn from each discussion, and I never give up because I believe so strongly in the mission of the organization I am involved with.”
TODD HORNBACK Immediate Past Chair, Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees “Nothing rejuvenates my soul like live music. There’s a collective effervescence that naturally emerges when we have shared experiences with others. And music is well-known to deeply nourish our soul. The confluence of these two powerful forces restores me with all that’s beautiful in life. So, let’s go to a show!”
JENNIFER TOERPE Former Chief Nursing Officer Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Banner Thunderbird Medical Center “What’s kept me resilient over the last few unprecedented years?
“I choose happiness each day, and I have a belief that I will succeed in serving others through positive thinking, planning, hard work and determination. “My team of nursing leaders and the care team are aligned around a common vision ‘to make healthcare easier so life can be better.’ My team knows they are trusted healthcare advisors. Believing in my team, rallying around with them, alongside them, recognizing them. “I believe in the power of hope and routinely instill hope generously in those around me. I live my life with trust and courage, while taking time to reflect, rest and recharge. I believe that compassion and kindness are a necessity and a choice. I trust that regardless of what occurs in life or within our sphere of influence, it will be OK because we are resilient. And together, we make a difference.”
“Resilience for me is maintaining my purpose and integrity, remembering that patience is a virtue, telling myself it will happen if I keep pushing forward.”
SHARON L. LIND Chief Executive Officer Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers “Resiliency does encompass body, mind and spirit; I believe it is a blend of perseverance and tenacity, having the ability to overcome despite difficulties and challenges, possessing determination that can influence and impact in a positive way. Strengthening my resiliency comes by way of staying connected to my True North, staying mindful about my core values and purpose to enrich the lives of others—through family, friends, work, and community connections.

Healthcare Worker Finds Resiliency by Helping Others Find Theirs Steve Stanek | Banner Boswell Medical Center “How can I help?” “What can I do to make your day better?”
He understands what it means to be on the front lines helping others.
Such comforting, caring words these are for those feeling anxious when coming to the hospital.
Before joining Banner Boswell seven years ago, Steve was a firefighter in Chicago. For 24 years, he was on the front lines during some of the most tragic as well as some of the most joyful times in people’s lives.
Steve Stanek goes above and beyond to exemplify this caring spirit. He is a Patient Transporter and the Head Concierge at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City. He also is known by many as “the heart of Banner Boswell,” although he will say he represents the spirit of the bigger team.
“When I’d give a bracelet to someone, I’d tell them to think of their favorite tune,” he says.
Steve Stanek
He built his resiliency from all he experienced as a first responder. Learning guitar and piano helped him cope. How does Steve continue to stay resilient?
Not forgetting anyone, Steve also goes out of his way to give words of encouragement and appreciation to the healthcare teams. Doctors, nurses and other frontline and support team members are not exempt from this excellent service.
18
Steve also is a firm believer in the power of music to promote healing and resiliency. He can be seen on occasion playing the grand piano in the hospital lobby and strumming his guitar outside the main entrance on his days off. During the height of COVID-19, Steve did more than play the strings on his guitar, he began making bracelets out of them and would occasionally give them to patients as a show of support.
Steve greets people at the main entrance when they arrive and escorts patients, visitors, and caregivers to and from areas in the hospital. Going the extra mile is in Steve’s nature to create the best experience possible for everyone he meets. He strives to help patients feel a little better, more comfortable and even more resilient in their journey. He does this by talking with them, being responsive to their needs and finding ways to make them smile or laugh.
He adds, “Faith has gotten me through the most difficult times. We’re all going to have trying times, so faith helps us go on.”
“My current job serves as therapy for my past experiences. I gain as much from the people I meet as they do from me. Meeting them reminds me that life is precious and to make the most of every day.”
One grateful patient mentioned to Steve that when he wore that bracelet, he felt “an extra shield of protection.” Steve says he is thankful for all he gained throughout his firefighting career, which inspired his desire to continue giving back after retiring. That’s why after moving to Arizona, he applied to work at Banner Health. “I felt my purpose was to be here at Banner Boswell. I’m a firm believer we are put in place for a reason.”
