Gay Star News reports that In one of his last texts, he is alleged to have asked one of his friends to be ‘buried nicely’. This is another young man gone too soon. JURNI rayne Not your average vocalist

J

Von Watts

urni Rayne is not your average vocalist/artist. This Dallas, Texas native has a great sound and unique flair. Do not judge a book by its cover because this anomaly of a diva will have you melting over the sultry sounds of her voice and the depth of her lyrics. Jurni Rayne is well versed in guitar, piano and flute; however, it is the voice that pulls everything together. Jurni Rayne has a fierce determination and an undefeated spirit. She doesn’t allow the difficulty of being an independent, “starving” artist control her destiny in music. With support from many friends and family, she has consistently been encouraged to keep on striving toward her musical goals. Her hard work and determination has gotten her many opportunities. She was warranted a chance to open for Fantasia Barrino and Monifah and she had her song, “What Happens When,” placed in a film titled “The Last Fall.” While music is important to Jurni Rayne, it is equally important for her to be an OUT lesbian artist. Jurni feels that your race, socioeconomic background, “hood” or sexual preference does not define the person or the talent. Because Jurni Rayne is a feminine identified lesbian, it would be easy for her to pretend to be heterosexual or, from the advice of many, just keep silent and let people make whatever assumptions they would like to make. Jurni Rayne takes a visible and vocal stand against “hiding” by intertwining her lyrics and lifestyle without fear or regret. Jurni Rayne uses any opportunity to educate the public and eradicate stereotypes and stigmas, whether that is homosexuality or HIV/ AIDS awareness; she stands for justice in all forms. Jurni Rayne wasn’t always a pursuant of music. She studied and received two Bachelor’s degrees, one in Spanish and the other in Hospitality Administration. Immediately following college she became a restaurant manager. Jurni did what she felt society deemed right, which was to go to school, get a degree and a career. In her title song, “Finding My Way,” she sings “got my degree/and a career for me/but deep down I wasn’t happy. Then suddenly/I couldn’t breathe /and I just had to leave.” This song was written as the onset of Jurni Rayne leaving the career world to pursue music. www.raynbowaffairmagazine.com PAGE 9

Knowledge is Power

Tell me how it all began for Jurni Rayne? Wow…how it all began. The funny thing is I never wanted to pursue music. My dad was a musician and he worked full time. He was always so tired, so I said I never wanted that life. Of course things are different considering I’m single and have no children. LOL. When I was a waitress, we used to do this stupid, and often embarrassing, birthday song. Well, a server found out that I could sing and paid me $5 to sing happy birthday to his table in lieu of the loud cheesy birthday song. I did, soon after, many servers were paying me. Birthdays, anniversaries, hell even break up songs. LOL. People kept telling me I should pursue a career in music, so one day, I did. Who were your influences musically growing up? And what is your perception of the music industry in it’s current state? Growing up, I had a LOT of influences. Dallas is very segregated. I grew up in predominately African American schools, but at church, I was one of two African American girls. Most of my influences came from Babyface, George Michael, Aerosmith, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston. I was classically trained in piano, so I was heavily influenced by classical music and I listened to multiple genres growing up. The music industry in its current state has definitely changed especially with the progression of technology. Many more people (even bigger named artists) are choosing to stay independent as a result of it. You don’t really need those big record labels to be on Pandora and the radio. I mean, who listens to FM radio anyway? Lol. You received two Bachelor’s degrees and a career. When did you realize music was your passion and to pursue it professionally? That’s an excellent question. I always enjoyed singing and music growing up, but never thought I would make a career of it. Many people I went to high school and college with don’t even know I sing. I actually left Pappadeaux to pursue that music

career and about 6 months in, I realized that it did NOT pay bills. So I started managing at Chili’s. I still kinda wanted to do music, but it was so unstable and it would have taken (and did take) a HUGE leap of faith to do it. There was just something about it that kept calling out to me. I dreamt about music. Music was always there for me…always comforted me. It was my utopia. My girlfriend at the time was extremely supportive and showed me the marketing branding side of things. I took that information and just ran with it. Knowledge is power! What is a typical day in the studio with Jurni Rayne? HELLA fun! Ask Jameal Williams aka @assetdaproducer. We have a lot of fun in the studio together (with AND without alcohol). We had been working together on other project for quite some time, then one day I was like “You gon help me on my EP or nah?” LOL. He said “Let’s Do It” and we did it. I’ll be releasing that album in September 2014. We get work done, but it’s not an overnight thing by any means. I plan out my studio time before going in there. So I already know what I’m gonna sing when and how I’m gonna sing it before getting in there. The last thing you want to do is wasted time and money by not being prepared for the studio. I am definitely lucky to LOVE my work. You’re not only a vocalist you’re also a musician. Do you produce your own tracks? I am a musician. I play guitar, piano and flute. I worked with Jameal Williams on this upcoming project. It was really organic because I went to him, played the songs and sang them and he added the other parts to make the songs sound fuller and less acoustic. And because he is a musician as well, we have all real instruments on the tracks. I have nothing against preset sounds and beats though. I just love the feel of the human touch on the music. I have other musicians playing on this upcoming EP as well.

Joseph McGowan on bass, Mark Lettieri and Daniel Rocha on lead guitar, and Jameal Williams on keys and drums. What inspired my HIV/AIDS Anthem? Kevin Anderson out of Houston TX. He does two events, The T.R.U.T.H Project and HeART & Soul, that I have performed for. One particular event had an HIV/AIDS theme. At this time, I didn’t know much about HIV/AIDS. I just knew I had been tested and knew my status. So, Kevin actually challenged me to go outside of the box. When I decided to write the song, I knew I didn’t want to do some cliché, wrap it up, get tested type theme. I wanted the theme to before those who were positive AND not positive. So the song discusses the stigmas that surround HIV and AIDS and that no matter what your status is, it doesn’t define who you are. It was a very inspirational moment for me and I am so glad I wrote the song. To date, what has been your biggest accomplishment as a recording artist? There are so many things that I’ve accomplished thus far. I’ve opened for Fantasia, Monifah, played in many festivals, finished recording my first album, BUT the thing that I am most excited about is having my song “What Happens When” in the movie “The Last Fall” starring Lance Gross. Not many people can say they have a song in a movie. LOL. BET and Centric picked the movie up and it is available on Netflix and in the Redbox. Do you find it hard being out while pursuing your career? What advice would you give others struggling with a decision such as this? There are so many dynamics to my music and my sexuality. I am OUT because I don’t want there to be any surprises. I have “heterosexual privilege,” meaning, I don’t “look” gay. So when I work in the straight community, they assume I am straight. There have been times where I was passed over for an opportunity because I am queer. The biggest challenged I’ve had so far is people telling me to keep who I am a secret in order to further my career. I haven’t been in the closet in years and I don’t plan to get back in it anytime soon. Not “looking gay” has hindered me as well. I often get overlooked for LGBT events until I say “HEY! LOOK AT ME!!! I’M QUEER TOO!!!” LOL.
My advice to those struggling with the decision of whether or not to be openly gay is to do whatever makes you feel comfortable. If you are comfortable being in the closet, so be it. If not, don’t let anyone push you in there. I believe that sexuality does not define the person or the talent, so it really shouldn’t be a factor. What’s next for Jurni Rayne? How and where can readers find you? Ah, what’s next for me??? Well, I’m releasing my FIRST album at the end of this summer (September 2014) and I’ll be moving from Dallas to LA in October to further my music career. I can be found pretty much anywhere there is a computer. LOL. You can Google “Jurni Rayne,” catch me on Facebook: JurniRayneFans, Twitter:@JurniRayne, IG: @JurniRayne, YouTube: Jurni Rayne, Reverbnation: JurniRayne. But really, the one stop shop to see where everything is would be my website. www.JurniRayne.com

The Domino that wont Fall

Born Michael Poindexter II on Jan 4, 1988, Benny began his affair with music at an early age memorizing Disney songs and Christmas Carols. How did your love affair with music begin? I’ve been a fan of music since elementary school. I originally wanted to be a singer until the day I heard “Dear Momma” by Tupac. I would say that’s when my affair with hip-hop began. When did you want music to be your career and not just a hobby? I realized around my junior year in college while studying to be Fashion Designer music was more than just a “thing to do”. I became obsessed with this form of expression and the feeling has never faded. Listening to my music can discover anything you could ever hope to know about me. If I could sit around all day every day and write and record I’d be a very happy boy! As an independent LGBT artist what have you struggled the most with? The challenges that come with being an independent artist are without prejudice. I honestly don’t think that based solely on my falling into this pseudo-category of “LGBT artist” the mountains I have to move are any higher. I do think that because I’m openly gay people will inadvertently refer to whatever preconceived notions they may already live with about LGBT people. However, the struggle is real out here for anyone breaking into the music game. I am not exclusive in my hustle, but my music speaks for itself and I am exclusive in my originality. Your voice is so deep and unique, when you rap it has reminiscent tones of Notorious B.I.G, have you been told that before? (Laughs) My voice was actually deeper than it is now… a few years ago I had my tonsils removed and there were complications, which lead to corrective surgery subsequently the tone, changed a bit…but yes I have heard the Biggie comparison before. To be honest I think it’s awesome and a little intimidating to be compared (in any capacity) to Biggie Smalls! I mean come on; he’s a rap God! After listening to your mix tape “Left Turn at Neptune” I realized your lyrical ability is phenomenal, what is your writing process like?

Phenomenal (smiles) thanks! My writing process is relatively simple I find an instrumental that I like and I replay it over and over and over again. I start mumbling a structure to a verse then I gradually begin to fill in the mumbles with words. I do this very quickly and I work on several songs at once by flipping between instrumentals, this seems to cut down on writers block. Being an LGBT Artist what challenges have you faced personally and professionally? Personally I’ve accepted who I am and that I couldn’t change even if I wanted to, so I can easily ignore most of the negativity that stem from people’s lack of understanding. Professionally I believe any true fan of hip hop and even those that only listen to rap on radio can respect the art that I manufacture and more often than not I am respected on the strength of my music. I think people know good music when they hear it. What is something no one knows about “Benny Domino” I taught myself to cut/design/color my own hair exclusively …I haven’t been inside of a barbershop in almost ten years! Also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE sour gummy worms! It’s truly an addiction, real shit. What can we expect from your next musical endeavor and when will that be released? I am currently working together with my homie LaMonica Cobbs for UROC Entertainment (United Royals of Creativity) on my latest project titled “Little Red” slated for release later this year… stay tuned! Raynbow Affair wants to know...What’s your CRAZIEST “Turnt Up” moment?! Well this one time, at band camp… (Starts laughing!) Naw man can’t open the vault on that one…I can tell you it involves breaking and entering!! Tristan Rose www.raynbowaffairmagazine.com PAGE 13

WHAT IS

BOUNCE TRONIC?

Big Freedia (pronounced “FREE-da”), known as the Queen of Bounce, is at the forefront of the Bounce rap movement (a subgenre of hip-hop born out of New Orleans and known for its call and response style and lightening speed booty-shaking dance). Let’s hop right into this brand new upcoming “official” solo entry Just Be Free -- Although pretty self-explanatory, still tell me, conceptually, what does that title represent both to and for you? Big Freedia: “Just Be Free” means a few things. Of course, it’s a reference to being who you are and being free to express yourself. I’ve always been about freedom of expression, so it made sense that my first album expressed that! But, it’s also a reference to my mom, who passed away in April. She is finally free of the pain she lived with for so long.

How then would classify the style of music that you create and perform? Big Freedia: I call it “Bounce” music, but its peppered with Electronic, Trap, Hip-Hop…I call it Bounce-tronic!

On it, you collaborated with famed SF Bay Area based producer Thomas McElroy [En Vogue, Raphael Saadiq], among others -- In having said this, how did this particular collaborative musical endeavor actually come to fruition? Big Freedia: My manager introduced me to Thomas McElroy. This album was recorded in his studio as well. But, I didn’t go big on the features or guest producers on this album. This is real New Orleans Bounce, with a little Electro and some Trap. It all came together naturally. I worked with my main producer here in NOLA; BlaqNmilD.

Do you have any other additional/outside aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment? Big Freedia: I’m a decorator as well. I do weddings, birthday parties...Everything! I love creating an atmosphere of celebration. I’d love to open a design store some day.

Reflecting, when did you first become interested in music? And, how did it actually all begin for Big Freedia? Big Freedia: My mom got me interested in music. She always had music on in the house; Patti LaBelle, The Ohio Players...Then, I joined the church and the church choir. I just loved to perform and to sing. I think my mom was hoping I’d be a gospel singer, but once I heard “Bounce,” I knew that was what I wanted to do. Now you are a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, correct? So growing up there, who were/are some of your biggest musical influences? Big Freedia: Oh, so many artists influenced me; The Neville Brothers, Katey Red, DJ Jubilee, and national artists; like Michael Jackson and Run-DMC! Where did the moniker Big Freedia originally derive from? Big Freedia: My name is Freddie. A friend from home one day just named me Big Freedia, and it just stuck!

18 PAGE www.raynbowaffairmagazine.com

You also established for yourself a television presence through your reality series, Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, which aired on Fuse TV -- What are your future goals and/or plans in regards to this venture? Big Freedia: Season 3, 4 and 5!

On a more serious note, has it been a whole lot more difficult for you to be taken serious as an entertainer because of your sexuality? What then has been the biggest obstacle/hurdle for you thus far? Big Freedia: I don’t find it hinders me at all, except with some in the Hip-Hop community. But, it’s only a matter of time. To date, what has been your biggest career moment? Big Freedia: There have been a few, but performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! was amazing! It was a turning point for me in my career. Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention? Big Freedia: Get my album Just Be Free, out on June 17th, and be sure to tune into Season 2 of Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce June 11th!

“I’m not happy, I’m content. HipHop is forever evolving, so I just tend to go with the flow.”

SIYA by Todd Davis

22 PAGE www.raynbowaffairmagazine.com

“F!@# Next, I’m Now!”

Tell me your whole inception into music -- When did you first become interested in it? And actually, how did it all begin for SIYA? I started rapping when I was 7 years old. I was going through so much as far as my childhood, I needed an outlet to vent. I began writing my thoughts, that turned into poetry and eventually (it) turned into rhymes. So, I’ve been really spitting for 20 years. Now you are a native of California, but actually were raised on the East Coast, correct? So growing up then, who all did/do you consider to be your strongest musical influences? I’m Bed-Stuy all day no matter where i rest my head! Cali is not home. Brooklyn, New York, is. I just needed a change of pace. In Cali, it’s easier to move around and rub elbows with the right people. Tank played a big part in that as well. If i would of stayed in Brooklyn, I would of got caught up in the streets how I did when I was younger. Jay and BIG raised me musically! Big L, Lil Kim, Big Pun, Rakim, The Roots, The Lox, etcetera -- The list goes on... How would you describe and/or define the style of music that you create and perform? Classic and timeless...I’m an innovator. I’m not afraid to change the perspective of my fans and end the stereotype of what a “female MC” should sound or rap about. At what particular point did you opt to pursue music on a professional level? I was 12 when I really got into the game. My cousin, Special, used to manage me on some family shit. I used to be up at Daddy’s House in Times Square fucking with Meda and Zab Judah, as well as this chick named Toya. She used to work for Puff. I was in Club Babalu’s with DJ Self helping him carry crates and shit! *She laughs* Good times. I was young and hungry.

proceed in your career in a much more timelier manner, with less struggles and/or obstacles blocking your path? Honestly, has it, specifically, caused you any extra added problems at all throughout your journey? My sexuality never, but my image yes. I never gave in to the “hype” about what a chick should have on when she stepped into a label meeting. I was always me and comfortable in my own skin. I never gave a fuck about anyone’s opinion! I love women just like all my niggas do. That’s just it! Lyrically, I’m nothing to fuck with, so who I fuck behind closed doors is no one’s concern. So many people have paid gratitude for my actions as far as me standing my ground. Why change? Then, I will really be a sellout knowing damn well I represent a whole culture around the world. At the end of the day, I’m just a sick female emcee. Facts. Which, of course, brings us to “now”...It’s recently been reported that you are an integral cast member on this forthcoming brand new reality show Sisterhood of Hip Hop, which is being executive produced by T.I. -- How did you even manage to become a part of this upcoming Oxygen series? T.I. was actually filmed by a friend of mine up at XXL i believe. He randomly started talking about me and my talent and how he digs it. Next thing you know, Tank got a call about the show. I did a Skype interview with Oxygen, and they fell in love with me. They knew they had something different on their hands...The rest was history. Although it has still yet to air, what can actually be expected from the first season of, what sounds like, a very promising new television vehicle? Just raw, unfiltered truth and emotion. All the girls poured their heart out -- Blood, sweat and tears! We really became “sisters.” There’s some drama of course, but all in good faith. We all have the same goals...Stay tuned, shit is going to be uncut! Truthfully, how are you and the rest of the ladies; Diamond, Brianna Perry, Nyemiah Supreme and Bia, actually getting along? You will see! I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s definitely worth watching. Because it has already been billed as a “reality” program, does that really mean that it is 100% unscripted TV? It’s all 100% unscripted! Everything we do and say is completely us! The struggles, the success...Everything! I promise you that. Oxygen took care of all of us. Longevity, what are your future plans and/or goals for sustaining a lengthy career in music? Honestly, to continue being the best me I can be, and to deliver real music. Everything will take its proper course. You know the saying, “Real Recognize Real,” the fans will come forth and rep! You can’t deny a following.

Has the fact that you have been so open and honest about your sexuality been a(ny) hindrance of sorts in you actually being able to advance or www.raynbowaffairmagazine.com PAGE 23

Do you have any other additional/outside aspirations, maybe even completely away from music? Well, my best friend, Knox, has a clothing line called Damn Pigeon that I’m a part of and pushing alongside with her. The brand has gotten very big in the past few months. I’m also writing for other artists. Just keeping myself occupied and busy with work. On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of hip-hop? And, even more specifically, women in rap, or the lack thereof? I’m not happy, I’m content. Hip-Hop is forever evolving, so I just tend to go with the flow. Some niggas blow for a hot second, and some stay in the game for years. I never get “hype” about it. Plus, this generation just wants “real” music, and I agree with that. We all know Nicki is the only female currently making noise and has been for some years now, but there’s plenty room for more. Me personally, I’m not in a lane with other female emcees. My competition is the niggas in the game. That’s my focus!

To date, what has been your biggest “Hip-Hop” moment thus far? Truthfully, when I met with Irv Gotti, but you will have to watch the show for that. Looking ahead, say five or even ten years from now, where do you see yourself? Well...Being the one who everyone idolizes for remaining true to who I am. I will die a legend, and as long as I’m breathing I will be great. As for the immediate, what’s next for SIYA? We have some singles we are about to drop and some visuals directed by my brother, Mike Ho. We are going to flood the streets and the blogs with dope content, and let God take the wheel, you dig?! Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention? I think you got it all, son! This has been an amazing opportunity. Any “closing” thoughts? Shout/Out to all my fans, the “dreamers,” my team who stands behind me through thick and thin. Shout/Out to my projects; Roosevelt (Houses) in Bed-Stuy, all my wild hoolies and my family! Big up to all of the producers from 51 Minds and Oxygen, who believed in me and gave me the chance to change the world! The

NEW Religious Movement

BISHOP ALLYSON ABRAMS In 2011 I wrote my first musical, aptly named My Revival and then in December 2013 I completed my first novel, entitled, Who is First Lady Wanda Davis? This novel details the First Lady of a prominent African American church who decides to come out during a public event. I was amazed at the feedback and conversation that took place. So many people resonated with the story of a black woman coming to grips with who God had intended her to be.

message exclaiming “Michael this is the real Wanda Davis! You have to read this story.” I can remember smiling and wondering who this brave woman was. I stole away in my office and read the article detailing the coming out story of not just a First Lady but a Bishop! Needless to say I never thought I would get the opportunity to speak with a trailblazer, whose outing has had seismic reach within the religious community. During my preparation I thought of my friends, who had made the connection and their zeal to have her story told. I thought of my created characters, who had become like an invisible friends to me. Throughout my preparation for this interview I wanted to be sure that I wasn’t being given another PR driven statement that did nothing for the conversation concerning the evolution of LGBT religious acceptance.

As many of my readers know, the Black church is a place of community and deep tradition. Ideas of masculinity and femininity are weaved into storytelling, worship and simple interaction between the sexes. To say we as African Americans take our lead from the Black Church is an understatement. The influence and majestic power of the Black church resonates from the era of slavery to the civil rights movement. As a people we found our voice through the black church. Throughout the decades, this voice has become one voice, in unison, affirming the rights of some and silencing the rights of others. In October 2013 a dear sister of mine sent me a Facebook

I joined The Bishops weekly prayer conference on my telephone to see how she responded to her flock. My intentions were only to join for the first fifteen minutes but I found myself listening to her well thought out teachings. Okay she has a way with words I will give her that but who is she? After announcing to the world her truth. Bishop Abrams went right to work creating Empowerment Liberation Cathedral, offering followers outside of the state of Virginia, virtual memberships, where they can connect through the ministry via streaming video and in depth phone conferences such as the bible study I attended. This was new, different. I had to know more and that’s just what I got.

Public outings by celebrities and sports athletes have become the norm. Let’s be honest we can count one maybe two a week. We listen daily about the impact ones outing may have on a particular industry or trend but the historical/societal context remains to be seen.

What was the final straw or catalyst that made you come out? I don’t think it was like that. I wanted to be authentic and was waiting on a time to do that and that time did not arrive because a situation came up and I refused to not be dishonest about myself. Would you care to elaborate on that situation? Basically I was in a number of positions of authority and visibility. If you know anything about the Baptist church they have elections. I was poised to move up into a position of historical influence. However, a Pastor within the organization decided to spread some information about me saying that I was in a same sex marriage. This Pastor released it to other Pastors and said that he had found it on the internet. One of my friends received the information and shared it with me. I had begun receiving phone calls asking if this information was true. So I decided to gather my Deacons and shared with them my truth. They were very supportive of my decision and said that they would back my decision to tell the congregation. I had a date set but this information was already be disseminated so I decided it was time to get out in front of it and tell my church. RA-Thank you so much for begin so candid with me. I know it must be difficult getting in that mid space again. I appreciate it. How have you processed the anxiety that comes with taking such a huge leap of faith? Well one of the things I did was prepare myself ahead of time for the fallout. You think about all the things that could go wrong and all the things that could go right. However, things don’t go the way you always want them to go. I was in pray about the situation and woke up one day and said I have accomplished so much in my life and no one can take that away from me. I still had options! I was the one who had the Masters of Divinity. I was the one who had my doctorate of Ministry. I was the one who was ordained. God wasn’t through with me and I had to understand what he was preparing me for and this was just the start of something greater. I wasn’t the Pastor of that church any longer but I had to realize that there were other churches that would have me. There were other churches that were affirming and would welcome me. I had to have a Ah Ha moment in my life that helped me move through any uncertainty I had about my new walk.

With the new church and many changes that have happened in your life, what do you stand in expectation of? I stand in expectation of a whole lot of stuff. I stand in expectation that God will show up and move in a mighty way. My Worship is authentic and I want to open a space where the people can gather and surrender in an atmosphere of worship. I stand in expectation of people being excited about a church where they can be free, not bashed or told they are going to hell. I am excited about being liberated. I am excited about a place of intersection. I am praying for an atmosphere where the LGBT community can come together under an LGBT Leader and reject abuse from Pastors and be loved in a church that accepts them for who they are. Being a Pastor I stand acknowledging all of Gods people, Gay, straight, Bi, Trans. How have you and your spouse navigated changing relationships (Friends/ Family) what has been your toughest obstacle? We understand that people have a right to choose their friendships and we respect people’s beliefs but we won’t be disrespected. There were some people that we thought were friends and supporters but we found out they weren’t. We have accepted where they are at in their lives but where they left. God has blessed and created new relationships and friendships. I can say I was very surprised with how some people have reacted. I built many relationship with some Pastors throught out the years. I would preach for them and vice versa and in an instant they have decided to distance themselves. If you enjoyed my preaching’s and teachings through the years what has changed? I preached about my savior then and I am continuing that same ministry now. That has been a great obstacle to overcome but God is in the restorative business. What do you hope to achieve with your new Ministry? When I came out some many people wanted me to travel and speak all around the country. The Spirit gave to me that there is a way to connect to the far reaches of this country and beyond. With our conference calls on Wednesday, people can get the word right where they are at. I wanted to create a church where the word is virtual and real. You can get it in your own home, in your car. It’s a non -threating way to get engage God’s people. Establishing a virtual ministry to help the wounded and needy pushes God vision beyond a state or four walls. We offer online memberships and you can also join us through streaming video and let’s not forget If you’re in the city all are welcome.

RA-Awesome, that’s amazing. Now this is a more personal question. When did you know that you were a Lesbian? That’s always a challenging questions. My journey was different. I came from a very conservative back ground. So it wasn’t until I entered a liberal seminary and began working on my Doctorate that I began to wrestle with what they scriptures really say about sexuality and what does God allow. In the process somewhere around 2009, 2010 I became open about the ideal of love and how God would send it to me. I under stood that I was not on my way to hell and nothing was wrong with me and that God could still use me and bless me. I began to develop a firm understanding about what God was revealing to me about my life.

RA-Bishop and I sat on the call well after the interview concluded. I talked, she listened and encouraged. Her approach to ministry is new age, relevant and needed. Her direct approach to reaching out to the masses are what the bible requires. No gimmicks, distasteful shout videos, just word and spiritual guidance. Paul Newman once said you should never meet your heroes. Sorry Paulie, maybe you have the wrong hero’s.

The Summer Smash, Stash or Flash of the Edition

T

he cold has finally made its last appearance and the sizzling summer is now in sight! This season is forecasted to be ever changing, dramatic and eventful just like the weather. In this edition of Extreme Expo the trends of summer are many, yet choices that may suite only you are few. Like always we will open our minds and currency to the possibilities of fashion forward looks of the summer season. To put things in fashion perspective one will contemplate, what’s the summer smash? What needs to be added to the stash? Finally, what’s the point blank flash trend of the summer? For those of you who are having trouble with the last one. A flash fashion trend is very sudden and has a brief time period. For all of you who are fashion fearless living the summer “flash” is always being one with the moment. The summer smash: Just like the movies, there are some trends that will be the talk of any town, even tinsel town. These trends have the smell of success trailing their path. Orange Outbreak- Like the television show that shares the same name, orange is the new black. Embrace the aura-filled orange in dress, beauty (cosmetics) and accessories. Whether you’re masculine or femme adding a slice of the ostentatious hue to your summer wears will do you good. Incorporating with a neutral ensemble will get you a lot (looks). Black & White Blitzkrieg -Timeless in fashion yet very uniform in the past. The monochromatic duo is always red carpet worthy or fashioned to look your very best. Heads will turn when dressed in head to toe or backwards instead of forward (white & black). The wardrobe stash: Even though the fashion modus operandi is ever changing. There are a few key looks that will always get the job done and be the icing on the cake. So keeping these looks on hand is always a sure thing. White Blouses/Shirt: For the crisp and clean effect the classic white always has a place in fashion. White is so classic the neutral color use to be the subject of the chicest, sexiest and swag bearing parties of the summer. No matter the season, white is always “on” when you want to look your absolute best. Suits: For strong or soft lines that demand attention and embody a boss, the suit is your wingman to the top. Whether it’s single or double breasted (separates, pattern or color). This silhouette has success written all over it!

The wardrobe to flash: As discussed earlier, there are certain trends in fashion that are of the moment. No one exactly knows how the trend entered the (fashion) scene or sometimes why it’s so hot. With that being said, all will know that the trend will make a swift yet brief exit (one way or another). Iridescent is of the essences: Paying homage to holographic effects, materials like taffeta (rayon) or silk interwoven with two different colors with high gloss finishes. These characteristics make such cloths the chameleon fabrics of fashion. Dresses like frosted mirrors for her and bomber jackets like metallic foil for him. Luminescence will be the essences this for this fashion trend. Floral Fusion for Men: Floral prints may be a thing of the past for some but on the Euro scene the floral print is all the flash! Men of all walks of life and business are wearing abstract floral prints on button down shirts and khaki shorts. In western culture (1930’s) the first floral prints constructed for male fashion was the Hawaiian (Aloha) shirt. The floral fusions this summer will drag men of all swag out of their box! Urban Fashion Flare: As stated earlier the summer fashion trends of 2014 are many. The urban scene spins a different flavor to the fashion trend mix. Take a gander at what’s good. You Art what you wear: Wearing fashions that drape beautifully to your curves or stand broad across your chest. Art is no longer just amusing in galleries. To be Art (work) in motion is what’s in. Sportin’ the Sportswear: Show off that sensual silhouette or that physique massed with swag. If you are an athleticism junkie this season is your time to shine. If the aforementioned is something you lack, wear that fresh sports branded/haute couture hoodie, track ensemble and sneakers. All will have everything to gain with this trend. Grace & Lace: Lace wrapped around sleek curves, create bold lines and leave subtle traces are what’s seductive for summer. Show a little, maybe a lot either way know your limitations, and leap fashion bounds. Checks for the Mate: Chess, a sport for those who seek intellectual stimulation now breaks out of the box and on the runway. Monochromatic checks that beckon the White knights and Dark Bishops. This studious pattern is suave vibe to the norm. ~CK Smith
