rayogram’s Field Guide to New York City Bees was written, designed, and illustrated as a pro bono project for elementary school students cultivating the Urban Farm at Battery Park.
Our field guide brings the entomology of honeybees to life with a comic about City Bee and lively, illustrated facts about the industrious honeybee who pollinates our farms, sweetens our palate and communicates by dancing. We were inspired to create the guide while managing our own African top bar bee hive in the Battery.
The guide became part of a half day science curriculum for students—including a field trip to the park to see our honeybees in action and taste their honey.
We were thankful to have been mentored by Andrew Coté of the New York City Beekeepers Association, hosted by the Parks Department and guided by the Battery Park City Authority.
