Relaxing Paradise STUDIO 5- Sustainable Design on Concrete Lawn
Yangfan Pan 988546
History Of The Site Before the University of Melbourne was built, the Wurundjeri people who belongs to one of the clans of the Kulin Nation has lived on the land for more than 40,000 years[1].
‘Townend creek’ originated from somewhere near the current Melbourne Cemetery, it flowed through the University site and down a shallow valley, along which Bouverie Street is now situated[1]. By relying on the resorces in the river, the Wurundjeri people lived in an enrichness life. The Short-finned Eel is one of their important food resources and the eels come to the site every year for the production.
In the early time of the university, a lake was located in the place where the Concrete Lawn stands today. With the time goes by, the lake disappeared. Instead, people put an pipe underground, the surface was constructed by concrete. However, the Short-finned Eel’s produce activity still happen through the pipe while it cannot be seen nowadays.
History Of The Site
The Wurundjeri people honour River Red Gums as an essential source of shelter, bark for canoes, tools such as spears and shirlds, instruments such as music sticks and clapping boomerangs, and sap used to shrink and seal burns[1].
Plants are important for aboriginal people, they not only used it as a principal part of the diet, but also used it as important medicines, fibres for industry and utensils. The Karawun (Lomandra native grass) is used to weave baskets, bags, mats and most significantly, the finnelshaped arrabines, or eel traps, extensively used to farm eels.
The wood for making such items was harvested using axes, some of which were quarried from Mt William, (Wuk-im-ee Moor-ring), a greenstone quarry near lancefieldin central Victoria (approximately 70km from Parkville).

Historical buildings remains people of the old story for the university even the aboriginal people who used live on this land. Now the concrete lawn which was built within these buildings has becomes a good place for people gathering, resting or doing marketing sometimes.
Plant Analysis
Plant Analysis
Color Analysis
Weather Analysis
From the sun and shadow analysis, there are two corners are shaded all year round, which are Circle A and Circle B. During the winter, the conctrete lawn can received enough heat from sun. During the summer, the trees planted inside the site, providing enough shading for people to block away from the heat.
The wind goes through the concrete lawn is mainly from the north, south,south-east, and west. The rapid wind speed comes from the north, the speed also has relationship with the relative humidity, the higher the wind speed is, the lower humidity rate through the direction.
Water Analysis
During the rainy day the run-off goes from the north-west to the south and east.
The underground rainwater system the system drawn by the example of the Fitzroy Garden underground stormwater system.
Waste Analysis
These two maps are trying to figure out the relationship between human activity, property position and waste recycle on the site.
Opportunities & Constraints Water
There is a great opportunities to create a water sensitive space. As the site is located in a In a low-lying terrain and easy to accumulate water during the rainny day, collecting and reusing rainwater and enhance the site’s storm water management ability are the key.
Ecology The majority of plants on the site are medium to height trees, which means
Energy
Generating clean energy is very important to the sustainable design of the site. (1) Solar Energy can be used on the site’s paving in the future design. (2) Except solar panel, generating the electricity can involve with human activities at the same time, for exemple, bicycling and walking. (3) The electricity is storaged and be used at night for lighting.
Waste
Cmmunity (1) The old ornamental pond can call back to some extent, as it is part of the aborigial culture and university campous’ history. Except the pond, some aboriginal culture like eel traps, greenstone, cannoes or even aboriginal painting/carving can call back to the design too.
(2) The nodes’ features of the site is not obvious for people on visially. Enhancing the nodes’ features are important. Making the history buildings can be ‘seen’ by the community is also beneifitial to the local culture and history.
(3) By the Edge Map, the introverted edge causes less flexible movement. The stright-line edges limit human and traffic’s commuting, making the site rigid. The sense of enclosure and strightly block also lead to less interesting of staying. Therefore , breaking the existing introverted edge, bringing more organic shape, creating a flexible moving and interesting space would be great potential for the future design.
the vegetation arrangement is lack of hierarchical and species diversity. For ecology aspect, there is a great opportinities to develop a biodiverrsity park. This can be achieved by planting different types of plants.
The coffee ground can be recycled to fertilize garden (food scraps was discarded because the bad smell). A prennial/indigenous garden is a nice program. It can create a better ornamental and colorful environment for campous and help improve people’s mental health on visually.
Material The main construted material of the Concrete Lawn is concrete, which
permeability and athetic are low. The large area of hard surface is also not a good space for animal to survive. Therefore, replacing the existing concrete surface into a more permeable ground is a potential development for the future design.
Project Idea
High Line, New York
Mental Health has become an issue to influence people’s health. This trend has tend to happen more often within younger people. When people feel pressure, a nice greenary area is a good place to go and help them feel better.
A nice landscape design can provide good treatments for relaxing people’s mental and body stress. Students are the main users in this concrete lawn. There is a good potential to change the concrete lawn into a relaxing place and provide interesting programs for students to use. The programing design will start from considering the students’ basic needs.

Program Bubble Diagram Roberto Burle Marx’s Fine Art Works The curved shape is really inspired me a lot. Organic form breaks the introverted layout and provides more flexible movement. The wandering rounte also stimulates people’s curiosity, attratcting them spend more time to explore the site.

Shortness: (1)The irregular curves lower down the circulation, making it harder for people who ride the bycicle to pass through the site from one corner to the other edge.(2) The path is narrow, which is not good for a bunch group of people passing through at the same time. (3) The site does not have much water to collect during the rainy day. Therefore, the wetland scale is quite large and there are too much ponds too. (4) The green space around the building’s edge is too large, blocking the main traffic road.

United Nations Playground -Isamu Noguchi Isamu Noguchi believes that sculpture is the announcement of creating space. Architecture can be considered as the extend development of sculpture. The difference between these two is the building has entrance but sculpture is not. Sculpture is a micro-building that provide experience for people. It not only can provide an interesting playground on the Concrete Lawn, but also can be used as a good education space for Architecture studens.
Magic Breeze Landscape Design in Hyderabad / India -Penda This architectural typology’s function and beauty are so intertwined and have a harmony balance between human needs and environmental impact. The circulation function and sense of interesiting in the site also adressed well. There are also provides spaces with multi-functions for peopel to use, which makes it becomes a vivid space.
Fitzory Gardeb, Melbourne These two sites are an interesting water park, especially the Aranya Children’s Farm is a very good interactive playground. It not only provides an idea about how to adress artificial landscape with natural landscape (wetland) together well, but also provides a design thingking about how to get human activities with water together.

Fizory Garden, Melbourne
The Fitzroy Gardens stormwater harvesting system captures, treats and stores stormwater to be reused for irrigation in the park. It is estimated that system will replace 59 per cent of the drinking water used for irrigating the park. This system inspired me a lot, I use the similar water system in the concrete Lawn to collect rainwater and purify it on the site, in order to turn the site into a water sensitive campous.

Section A-A
This sports field is related to power generation. It uses solar panels and power equipment to generate electricity and store it in underground batteries. At night, the electric energy stored during the day will be discharged for lighting. The equipment can not only improve the health of students, but also improve their mental state and make campus life more interesting. This is also a good way to generate green energy and provide a good view at night.
