IMPLEMENTER’S QUICK GUIDE ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM REGION X – NORTHERN MINDANAO INITIAL VERSION 2020-2021
RAY BUTCH D. MAHINAY, PhD
Education Program Supervisor I Regional ALS Focal Person, DepEd Region X
FOREWORD Hello, mga kauban nako nga implementer sa ALS Region X! This Quick Guide is hoped to assist you as we learn the new ways that we introduce in our region so we can give the best for our learners. I humbly anticipate your understanding to embrace and dutifully perform these changes. In doing so, we are all in the same page in our implementation. This school year is challenging, but with these challenges we become better. Alternative Learning System Region X – Northern Mindanao

The CIA Model
Conceptual Basis
It is important that we have a structure in everything that we do for a system to work. The CIA model emphasizes how the three should be aligned in our implementation of ALS programs. In all our innovations, we are guided by this model.

The ALS Curriculum
ALS K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum
Our program in ALS is aligned to the formal schools that is K to 12 basic education curriculum. Junior high A&E test passers can proceed to senior high school. Our copies of the curriculum guide (CG) were done in printing press and distributed to all divisions last January 14, 2020.

Our Implementation
Learning Activity Sheets
TV and Radio-Based Instruction
Distance Learning Delivery Modalities*
Just like with the formal schools, we rely most on printed learning materials as easiest to conduct in distance learning and the most economical. In our region, we also have TV and radio-based instructions as supplementary learning modalities. *CO Memorandum, DI-CI-2020-00162, dated July 21, 2020, signed by Usec Diosdado San Antonio, re: Suggested Strategies in Implementing Distance Learning Delivery Modalities for School Year 2020-2021

Learning Activity Sheets
Learning Activity Sheets (LAS)
Adopting to the learning pedagogy of the Dynamic Learning Program of Bernido and Bernido (2010), we developed 1,000+ LAS for the six learning strands. We did some integration of learning competencies within each LS. We also have 14 LAS for health awareness and basic survival skills. And another 48 LAS for the first six modules of the ALS Life Skills.

Learning Activity Sheets
Learning Activity Sheets (LAS)
LAS are carefully thought out to be one page only. It is simplified and contextualized for our ALS learners, so it is more relatable to them. The LAS must be COPIED by the learners from top to bottom. Writing can trigger more neural activities which means better retention of concepts. It can also develop academic stamina and discipline.

Learning Activity Sheets
LAS Reproduction
Reproduction activities are done by the implementers in school-based or community-based learning centers. There has been tremendous support given to ALS in every SDO. Non-DepEd partners are likewise very supportive to us.

LAS Distribution and Retrieval
The system for distribution and retrieval of LAS is different per SDO. Weekly set of LAS can be delivered/retrieved in the community. Or it can be given/collected in the school or in the CLC following a schedule so that not all parents and adult learners will convene in mass.

Individual Learning Agreement
Individual Learning Agreement (ILA)
We introduced some changes in the ILA. Specific activities and the number of LAS are already indicated in weekly basis every month. A total of 10 pre-made ILA will be provided to all implementers. An example here is the ILA 1.1. This is the first ILA to be used regardless of the month. As you know it in ALS, every day is enrolment day. So at any time, we already have a learning plan to any enrollee starting with ILA 1.1, then 1.2, and so on. Our giving of LAS is progressive in quantity. We will start with three per week to help our learners adjust with this modality. Alternative Learning System Region X – Northern Mindanao

Program Timeline June: Portfolio Assessment May: ALS Life Skills Modules 7-9 December to April: Learning Strands 1 to 6 November: ALS Life Skills Modules 1 to 6 October: Health and Survival Skills October: FLT, ABL, RPL
Guided Activities per Month
The monthly activities of the learners will be indicated in ILA. For the month of October, we emphasize basic health and survival skills for our learners to be responsive in this time of pandemic. ALS Life Skills are distributed in November and May. Supposedly longer months are intended for the life skills modules, but we want to prioritize longer sessions for the six learning strands to cover as much competencies for the learner. The BEST preparation for our learners to pass the A&E test is the full acquisition of the competencies of the ALS curriculum. Alternative Learning System Region X – Northern Mindanao

Monitoring of Learner’s Progress
Monitoring of Learner’s Progress (MLP)
We also did some changes in the MLP. All LAS scores gained by the learner are entered in this form. We emphasize that each LAS is formative in nature so it should have an assessment value which in turn will serve as basis for evaluation. The scores will give meaning on how much help we will extend to our learners. By default, each LAS is worth 10 points such that the perfect score is indicated in the MLP already. To get the percentage score, the total score is divided by the perfect score. Then, the quotient is multiplied by 50 and added with 50. If the learner got 30 over 60, the percentage score is 75.

Alignment to the CIA Model
Three Elements are Aligned
Just like in the CIA model, the LAS (curriculum), ILA (instruction) and the MLP (assessment) are strongly associated with each other. This can firm up our teaching-learning efficiency in ALS. These will be appreciated both by the implementer and the learner because the learning process is transparent and systematic.

Learner’s Work Folder
Safe Place for LAS
As emphasized in our MTOT last September 2019, all learners will have a work folder. It is where ALL the learning outputs will be secured. The use of work folders is very timely in this time of pandemic. The LAS, ILA, and MLP will be placed in a LONG PLASTIC ENVELOPE. It is the same envelope for delivery and retrieval. This will serve as the work folder already.

Presentation Portfolio
Presentation Portfolio
Our EPSAs are busy evaluating the presentation portfolios at the moment in preparation for the A&E readiness test (AERT). This is a good footing for the next batch of portfolios, for school year 2020-2021. We know already what to include in the portfolio. While the work folder contains ALL the outputs, the presentation portfolio includes SELECTED entries only.

Portfolio Assessment
Portfolio Checklist
Our basis in assessing the presentation portfolio is this draft copy of the checklist criteria prepared by the ALS Task Force. Basically, the items to be placed in the portfolio should satisfy this checklist.

On Learner’s Output
How to Verify if Our Learners Really Did the LAS
If our learners are understood and assisted, the chances that they will let others do their task becomes slimmer. We can do the following: § extending time of completion § conducting F2F supervised time with the learner § giving of sample LAS outputs as models § communicating to learners (dili lang pasagdan) § creating FB group chats for social support

Important Reminder
Be reminded that our ILA 1.1, MLP 1.1, and LAS for the first set are distributed on or before September 28. This is true to all SDOs as ordered by our regional director, Dr Arturo Bayocot.
You’re Ready and Set, Igsoon!
Thank you very much for taking the time to equip yourself before our ALS sessions officially begin in October 5.
