REFLECTION Learning from these management gurus, I found out that generally when they create a vision, they make it big – even bigger than life itself. When working towards the realization of their vision, they go through the thorns and honestly take in the pain. They make lessons out of the experience. For them, there is no easy way to success. They welcome critics so they can improve their crafts. And when these gurus are already in their zenith, they share their lessons to others. I got all these as I have read their biographies and success stories.

I learned that most of the gurus had their trainings relevant to their field. For example, they took and aced business course in college. It gave them an edge as they know what relevant theories are good for a specific situation, and they know as well translating them into practice. So management science is very important - it is a tool, a weapon for the battlefield.

Relating to the organization that I am now, it has been known that most school administrators in the public education system do not have exposure to management science prior their appointment. We can only count those who have master or doctorate degree in educational management. So for those who by luck are now in power, what is their tool, their weapon in the battlefield? What actually happens is they will try something that might work and if it fails, then they will try again. They are mad, but no scientist. Until they will be polishing their ways such that through time and experience, they will become

4 masters to their own right. Albeit experience is the best teacher, it is still different to be equipped with management science because theories are at hand, practices are with bases, and there is effective and efficient process in the transfer of theories into practice.

The opportunity for growth in here is to strengthen the policy in hiring the most qualified people to run schools. In the process, it will justify the academic programs and the entailed efforts of the graduate schools in this country. For what is the essence of training people to become educational managers when anybody can just be one?

2 | Adapting an Educational Management Model In the book of Tony Bush (2003) entitled, Theories of Educational Leadership and Management, there are six major models of educational management.

These models vary in terms of (1) the level of agreement about the goals or objectives of the institution; (2) the meaning and the validity of the organizational structures within an educational institution; (3) the relationship between the instituion and its external environment; and (4) the most appropriate leadership strategies for educational institutions.

The six models of educational management (Bush, 2003) are as follows, to which the corresponding leadership model can give implications to what is the nature of these models:

If I am to assess my current school administrator with all due respect, she is employing a mix of formal and cultural models. The formal side goes to her being the implementer of the DepEd orders. She ensures the smooth flow of our mandate being teachers. The cultural side roots from her set of beliefs.

Being fearful to God and the responsibility to be good teachers are her manifestations that she wanted us to follow.

There is no perfect educational management model; this is not a one-size-fits-all scheme. Perhaps in our school, it is better if there will be a mix of these models depending to what the situation needs.

Although for most occasion, I would go for the collegial management model. In here the school administrator is more of a team-player, decides to be one with the group, more relatable, and involves everybody to coalesce to meet a common goal.

3 | My Own Career Path Trailing on what has been in my path as a student, I say I went through the tougher road to finish the level of education I achieved now. Somehow that ignited my fervor to culminate my formal learning with a doctorate degree.

I completed my elementary and secondary education in public schools.

Albeit these institutions were less competitive compared to other schools in Cagayan de Oro City, I took the chance to really learn well to become competitive myself. Indeed I graduated with high honors which gave me the opportunity to be admitted at Xavier University as a college scholar.

At Xavier I appreciated the idea to be in a good school. It developed in me the tenacity to learn more. It was very hard at the start but I strived hard thinking that the scholarship is all I have to finish college.

My perseverance and dedication moved mountains. I realized that pursuing graduate education can get me to higher places; I determinedly applied for a scholarship at Bukidnon State University to where I was admitted to their M.A. in science education program. There I learned myriad of things helpful for me as a science teacher and very importantly, I discovered a profound passion for research.

I believe I was honed enough to be ready for grander things. Since taking doctorate studies for me is my culmination of formal learning, the highest in educational ladder, I want to realize it so I can be more productive in my teaching career.

God-willing, after my doctorate studies I will aim for upper posts in DepEd in the right time. By then I believe I have the capacity to lead fellow teachers to improvement on education in public and private high schools in our city or in our region.

It is also my plan to be in state universities or colleges (SUC’s) where research is always advocated. I wanted to conduct future researches contributory to pure sciences or science education. Moreover, teaching and learning in the collegiate level is more dynamic and advanced, and I like to be at that kind of pacing.

4 | Educational Management Article: A Review The article that I reviewed is from the Journal of Management Education (2009) entitling, Demonstrating the Interplay of Leaders and Followers: An Experiential Exercise authored by Robin Sronce, Drury University and Lucy A. Arendt, University of Wisconsin.

Part 1 Summary of the Research

Part 2 Evaluation of the Research

The research started on the premise about classroom discussions of leadership that often neglect the essential role of followers.

These discussions do little to address the reality of students’ predominant roles as followers within organizations.

The authors describe the Origami Frog exercise, an experiential exercise that enables students to discover how follower behaviors impact group process and outcomes.

Students were asked to play either leader or follower roles, and followers are asked to exhibit either Effective or Passive follower behaviors.

It concludes that different follower roles interacting with leader yield different consequences.

1. Title and the Introduction The title reflects what the paper is about. The introduction justifies the relative importance of the research.

2. Statement of Purpose The purpose of the study is clear as to what it is trying to accomplish.

3. Background Literature Review The authors show evidence that links their work to related research. Their references are from

7 diverse sources like reputable journals and books of recent publication, and internet.

4. Measurement The authors clearly identify the important variables and explain how to operationalize them.

The authors provide information on how to make decisions about the validity and reliability of these measures but are not enough.

These seem like vague ways to measure the concept of the authors.

5. Sample The authors did not give a clear description of how the sample was selected.

6. Research Design The general research design seem appropriately matched to the research question.

The study did not describe in enough detail to give confidence in the conclusions the authors made.

7. Data Analysis and Presentation The discussion of data analysis appears not so logically ordered and not sufficient enough.

Although appropriate statistic is used given the level of measurement in their data.

8. Discussion and Conclusions The authors did not make appropriate conclusions based on their study. They acknowledge limitations of the study though. Recommendations are based on observations, less on data.

9. General The paper is clearly written. The discussion is logically ordered to take the reader through the study without confusion. Grammar and composition are very good.

5 | My Journey toward Personal Transformation I first heard of the name Dr. Genaro Japos when I had my masteral studies at Bukidnon State University.

They say he is good, but most of the words describe him as elegantly poised, prudish and pedantic. Well, those were not the exact words but to describe him deserves well-thought adjectives that could come parallel to his personality.

When I came to MUST one Saturday to attend our first meeting in our special class in Educational Planning and Management, I found out that this class, DEM 604:Philosophy in Educational Management, had started already last December. To add more to the injury, they were done with the midterm requirement.

Dr Japos, who greeted me “Para kang artista!” is very understanding and considerate to hear me out of my reasons on being to Bohol to take care of my father’s funeral. He gave me a special topic on Six Sigma instead to convalesce with the course.

ponder on how I can adapt it to my own organization. His examples are too creative that sometimes we explode in laughter, but it is through these ways that tickle the stakeholders to support.

With Dr Japos, I equate planning with creativity. Which I agree because what is to plan on things we know and do already? It is brave to go out of the box, explore the world with much perspective and risk in the process.

His strategy of letting us browse the internet is good. Undeniably, the internet is a superhighway of information. When we browse and expose ourselves to the internet on pre-determined topics, we are actually digesting them at our own pace. And these topics are grandest that we thought only those at top positions can read and understand. I forgot that I am actually in a doctorate studies and that means I should know the most. I am amused on how I belittle myself if I like the easier way.

I echoed our discussion to my co-teachers to which they find it refreshing. It is a validation that indeed Dr Japos is bringing to our class no less than the odd but bright things. My co-teachers are inspired in turn.

In sum, I learned so many good things from Dr Japos that inspire me to be the best professional that I can, steer away from mediocrity, and make most of all chances for growth. ▲
