KTM’s best, largest and most ambitious assault on MotoGP Grand Prix racing was unveiled a short distance from the factory in Mattighofen, Austria. Riders and staff from Red bull KTM Factory Racing and Red Bull KTM Tech3 were introduced by KTM management as part of the company’s most comprehensive line-up to face the FIM World Championship. 2019 has started brightly for the ‘orange’ brigade with success at the Dakar, in Supercross arenas, on the French beach sand and in national motocross circles. Now it is the turn of the asphalt crew to quickly spin the wheels. For the first time the KTM Race department drew their MotoGP force together not only to unveil the Red Bull colours for the 2019 campaign but to graphically illustrate the strong path through to the pinnacle of Grand Prix that begins with the Red Bull Rookie Cup, progresses to Moto3, Moto2 and to the premier class. After two impressive seasons in MotoGP where the manufacturer grasped their first points, first top ten finishes and ended the second term with their maiden podium trophy in Valencia, the effort is now doubled with the experienced Red Bull KTM Tech3 unit placing another two

RC16s on the grid. KTM were proud to highlight their Grand Prix structure and the potential for 2019 but it was arguably the presence of the athletes themselves and the new liveries on the race bikes that also caught the eye. Red Bull KTM will count on a total of 3 world championships and a grand total of 39 victories among their fourrider roster from Spain, France, Portugal and Malaysia with a haul of 92 Grand Prix podiums shared between them. Pol Espargaro will begin his third season with the factory RC16 and his sixth in the premier class. He is joined by former Moto2 World Champion Johann Zarco, the most successful Frenchman in Grand Prix history. Red Bull KTM Tech 3 field the promise of Hafizh Syahrin (the first Malaysian to compete in the premier class) and Miguel Oliveira: another ‘first’ for his country Portugal in MotoGP and the recently-turned 24 year old rookie is the first rider to have come up the Moto3 and Moto2 KTM ladder. MotoGP is backed up by the rapid test team duo of Mika Kallio and Dani Pedrosa.

Monkey bike is the name given by Honda to one of their Z Series small, 50cc lowpowered motorcycles introduced in the 1960s and fast forward almost sixty years to now, Honda again introduced a new Monkey 125, and the latest version of the species comes with a 125cc engine. So we tested the Honda Monkey 125 in the rain and shine on the rugged streets of Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya including to 4 days to Sepang Circuit

during the MotoGP pre-season Winter Test which is 60km away and we clocked over 1000km with the Monkey and to Gotong Jaya twice and Bukit Tinggi once! And we can tell you right up front, Honda got it right with this Monkey. Just that they didn’t include Bananas in the package!

i-Moto If you are looking for a fun bike, it will be difficult to do better than the 2019 Honda Monkey 125. As long as your plans don’t include going over 120km/h, (126km/h down Karak slope after the tunnel) the Monkey is ideal for battling urban traffic. It is incredibly light weight, the handlebars are narrow for lanesplitting, it has enough power to overtake four-wheelers and lorries, and the Monkey is easy for anyone to ride, even rank novices. It is so much more fun in the sun as well as in the rain! Well in the rain isn’t for everyone.

The 125cc motor is unintimidating, yet fully capable. Anyone can grab a handful of throttle and not be startled. At the same time, after you’ve filtered your way to the front of the pack at a stoplight, you have the beans to break away from the pack. It will take some mostly fully twisting of the throttle, but the power is there and controllable. Even with air-cooled and sporting just two valves, it is a marvel of simplicity with a dash of modernity via the EFI.

The Monkey clutch four-speed transmission is great for learners who want to start with a clutch bike, and also can be enjoyed for experienced riders. One down three up make this urban motorcycle one of the most fun to ride bike we tested.

i-Moto While the 125cc motor has decent lowend, you will be shifting it frequently. Third gear seems to be the sweet spot for balancing smoothness and instantly available acceleration. Fourth gear is fairly high, and designed for flat roads or downhills. Any significant hill will require third gear or lower. Happily, the motor revs out impressively—there’s no tach— so each ratio covers a good range of speeds. This isn’t a bike that you tear about on in the city. The Honda Monkey 125 goes quietly about its business—even the final drive chain is enclosed—and other motorists don’t mind when you sneak on through. In fact, the Monkey is so goodlooking motorcycle that puts smiles on the faces of drivers and pedestrians. Be prepared to respond to friendly waves and thumbs-up gestures. The handling makes city riding easy. With a fairly aggressive 25 degrees of rake, a short 1155mm wheelbase, large 12-inch tires, and just a 105kg curb weight, there is nothing stopping you from changing direction on the Monkey. It goes where you point it immediately. If it went much above 100km/h, the handling still won’t be scary. However, under 100km/h and below speed, it’s just perfect for city commuting. Honda gave the 2019 Monkey rear a simple twin suspension that works. There are no adjustments on the suspension— even the spring-preload on the shrouded shocks is set. Honda makes the most of 89 mm of travel on both sides with lively damping that allows the Monkey to recover quickly from bumps. The large 12 inch sporty wheels help on potholes, though the chunky stock tires are The Monkey’s high-aspect-ratio tires do more than just look cool. They’re extraordinarily practical too, giving you tons of grip and absorbing bumps or rough road surfaces. Every once in a while, when we get on lousy roads it still feel quite comfortable.

i-Moto

i-Moto

i-Moto The ergonomics are non-intimidating with a reasonable seat height under 777mm. While the comfortable seat is very low compare to other mopeds, the light weight of the Monkey makes up for it. The original handle bar ergos, I didn’t like so I took it to the shop and changed to my Mini Motorcross bike handlebar paid the shop RM50 to dismantle and re-install it back when I return the Monkey to Honda after the test, look perfect. The front and rear disc brake is powerful enough for the speed and weight of the Monkey. The front disc brake bites softly initially, and then responds to a harder grip gives a good braking. Skidding rear wheel if you are too aggressive but I never did skid the rear. I use both front and rear brake.

riding the Monkey. Although the Monkey is rather expensive, compare to other bike models of the same capacity, it is an iconic bike which is finished nicely. There is tasteful retro red Honda badging, LED lighting, and fingerfriendly switchgears. One feature missing from the 2019 Honda Monkey is pillion foot peg. The Monkey is a solo rider machine. If you look at the swingarm, you can’t see any mounting points for passenger pegs. The plus side, the seat is super comfortable for long excursions and the fuel consumption is super low RM6 worth of petrol can get us to Sepang Circuit from Petaling Jaya and back with 2 bar left even we full throttle all the way. Approx RM9 of fuel for our ride, Petaling Jaya – Ulu Yam – Batangkali – Gotong Jaya – Karak – Bukit Tinggi – The dash is a simple digital yet compete Karak – Gombak – Petaling Jaya. Pretty with fuel indicator and mileage. The dash good for 5.6 litre tank bike. tells you at a glance how fast you’re going The Monkey should run forever. This is an but not what gear you’re in. Beyond that, incredibly modern retro design and it’s there’s not much you need to know when virtually Monkey proof just Honda doesn’t

i-Moto add in the Bananas in the package. Sure, you might want to change the oil now and then—not that the Monkey is likely to notice if you don’t. Yes, you should follow Honda’s maintenance interval suggestions. In reality, you are not likely to experience a catastrophe if you don’t. The 2019 Honda Monkey 125 is fun, friendly, practical and can make you go bananas in fun! This is a perfect motorcycle for zooming around a university, or densely populated urban area. It has genuinely classic modern styling without feeling dated. It does everything it is supposed to do nearly flawlessly. There are limitations, as there are with any motorcycles, yet the Monkey 125 makes you forget those boundaries as it puts a smile on our face on almost every ride.

BANANASNOTINCLUDED!

One of the best-loved Hondas of all time, the original Monkey was a 1960’s hit, and it’s easy to see why. That little twowheeled rascal was built to generate earto-ear smiles. Now, fast-forward to the present 2019, we ride the all-new Honda Monkey. Peel the banana and you’ll see while it may look retro, the new Monkey is built for the way we ride today. The new 2019 Honda Monkey is a 125cc bundle of practical urban transport, a great lay back bike with fun written all over, and not just plain nor boring to pass by. So we climb down the tree and head out to ride the Yello Mello Monkey and checked out the two-wheeler the whole jungle is howling about and that just not Monkey business. Its still four gears but

has clutch with front and rear disk brake. We got a top speed of 117km/h. Not bad for this little fellow, Handling is pretty easy. Available in two color choices (Pearl Nebula Red and Banana Yellow),

When Kawasaki released the monstrous supercharged road going H2 in 2015, the beast looked insane as it to ride it. The Japanese giants in the green have another dose of insanity and uprated it for the first time since its inception. The power has been hiked massively from 197bhp to 228bhp, thanks mainly to a brand new ECU with a snazzy new mapping to tame the H2 power plant. It’s not just bigger power figures that the H2 has been gifted though, as

Kawasaki have also actually made the machine more rider-friendly, taking spark plugs, the ECU, air filter and the intake chamber from the sports touring H2SX – although we’ve been assured it’s definitely not as docile as it’s touring sibling. Also Kawasaki have given a nod to handling as well, equipping the H2 with the very same classleading Brembo Stylema brake calipers you’d find on the Panigale V4.

New Bridgestone RS11 tyres to help you look after those 228 horses. The H2 will also come with a TFT dash for the first time which will feature a whole host of info, while being finished in a ‘self-healing paint’ which uses a polymer to smooth out imperfections in . hot sunlight. There hasn’t been a release date or price set yet, but expect to pay north of RM170k if it arrive in Ninja Shops. We just can’t wait to get our hands on the new H2,

Domino Quick Action Throttles to see how they work, what they do, and if you should have one fitted to your bike…

What does a quick action throttle do? Ultimately, it changes the ratio of movement on the twist grip assembly to the reaction at the injector or carburettor end. Effectively you’ll be getting more bang for your back as you twist the grip! It’s especially effective on more recent models; a lot of the newer bikes are so powerful, there’s an incredibly wide range of movement to help if you’re a bit hamfisted, essentially meaning you need to twist the grip further to open the throttle. Sometimes that means you’ve almost got to dislocate your wrist, whereas our systems come in at just a quarter turn, making life much smoother for the rider. It helps to make riding easier, especially if riders are

susceptible to fatigue and arm pump, as it’s less stress on your muscles. Are they adjustable? Yes, absolutely. For example, the cams for our most popular model, the XM2 quick action throttle, which is used in Moto2, come with three different sensitivity rings. These rings adjust the ratio in which the throttle moves, as the cable is mounted in slightly different positions and routed slightly differently. It essentially makes the throttle either more or less sensitive to movement in the throttle as an example the smallest ring will give 2.6º per millimetre of movement, whereas the biggest is 2.9º for each millimeter of cable travel. Domino Grips are expensive. Do you need to use Domino grips? You don’t need to, but it’s definitely worth it as the grips are really well made.

Any (Italian flag) colour you like.

SUZUKI UNVEIL NEW KATANA

FIVE FAST FACTS 1 2

3 4 5

Domino supply throttles to teams in each tier of top flight With a huge pedigree and multiple titles, Domino have been creating quick action throttles since 1991. Unlike many other brands on the market today, each product is made in their factory in Italy. Although Domino started in Italy, they now distribute to more than 40 countries all over the world. It’s not all about racing, as Domino now supply to off-road bikes and road bikes including tourers and even scooters!

After unveiling a brand new Katana concept at EICMA in 2017 that teased us all, Suzuki have finally pulled the pin and made the dream a reality for2019. Essentially, under the skin of the gorgeously reworked body the Katana is a modified version of the GSXS1000, using the same 2008 GSX-R1000 engine as the previous naked which has been tuned to give just under 150 hp although there’s a few

slight changes to the geometry of the throttle connection to make the Katana as smooth as possible from the get go. The same goes for the frame, which is once again based on the current GSXS1000; although a little fun fact is that it does only weigh about the same as what you’d find on the current GSX-R1000. Suzuki have equipped the Katana with fully adjustable KYB

front forks and shock as well, alongside the ever popular Brembo radial mount Monoblock front brake calipers for some decent braking power. They’re the same stoppers you get on the GSX-R1000, although the discs are slightly smaller at 310mm. Electronically, the Katana comes equipped with a three-mode traction control system (and off), alongside the Suzuki Easy Start System for one touch start up and the Low RPM Assist system to try and help you not to stall. They’ve also equipped it with an LCD dash. They’ve kept the styling pretty retro with the distinctive shape still evident, and although there isn’t word yet of when they’ll be in dealerships and what the price is, we expect them to be hitting the Malaysia some time around April with a price of around about RM6070k….ish!
