i-Moto Motogp: sepang official test

The 2020 season begins Specifically built for speed and exciting racing, the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia is one of the world’s best. The 2,300 acre complex which also houses a hotel, shopping centre, golf course and other sports facilities cost around £50m to construct and was built in just 14 months, holding its first Grand Prix in April 1999 and setting the standard for race circuits worldwide. With four slow corners following two long straights and ten medium to highspeed corners, the wide track is particularly favourable to overtaking manoeuvres and plenty of open throttle. One of the longest laps in MotoGP is made all the more gruelling for riders by intense heat and humidity. Sepang is located around 50km south of Kuala Lumpur city.

PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team MotoGP duo Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli

Razlan Razali, Team Principal: We are proud to represent Malaysia and PETRONAS on the world stage for a second season as PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team. We are looking forward to the season ahead, eager to give Franco and Fabio the best opportunity to build on their 2019 performance. We are fortunate to enjoy strong support from PETRONAS and Yamaha, who share our philosophy and are invaluable to our aspirations. In MotoGP we set the bar high in 2019, so there is a lot of external pressure and motivation to repeat or improve this level of performance. We have targeted improvement in every area of the team but we are mindful that the element we don’t have control over is our rivals and how much progress they have made over the off-season. We’re eager to see everyone out on track over the forthcoming days at Sepang and we’re pushing hard to prepare ourselves in the best way possible for the season ahead.

Johan Stigefelt, Team Director:

In MotoGP I believe we really should be a force to reckon with this season. Fabio achieved seven podiums and six pole positions last year, which is a real benchmark. Franco was also looking for podiums and he showed he had the speed so he should be right in the mix too. In the off-season we’ve been busy with preparations and we have the benefit of all the lessons learnt in 2019. The team really worked well together over the course of last year so this puts us in an excellent position to improve and develop in 2020. This is true not only of our MotoGP squad but also the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto2 and Moto3 teams who are currently preparing for their private test in Jerez next week (10-11) ahead of the official test the following week (19-21).

HONDA TECHNOLOGY

Honda has developed and applied many innovative technologies for its motorcycle range, designed to have the greatest possible benefit for you and the world around you.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM Reduces braking pressure by monitoring the wheel speed, preventing the wheels from locking up.

Brighter and more energy efficient than traditional bulbs, with no time delay and a longer life.

EURO 5

PROGRAMMED DUAL FUEL INJECTION

Complies with EURO 5 emissions regulations.

Map-type computerised system maintains strong power and responsive performance in all conditions.

EURO 4

PROGRAMMED FUEL INJECTION

Complies withEURO 4 emissions regulations.

Map-type computerised system maintains strong power and responsive performance in all conditions.

HONDA ELECTRONIC STEERING DAMPER

RADIAL MOUNT CALIPER

Minimises sudden steering changes at high speeds for enhanced riding ease and comfort.

Offers better alignment to the disc and rigidity. Radial-mount calipers are secured and supported at both ends providing less caliper flex and better braking performance

HONDA EVOLUTIONAL CATALYSING SYSTEM

SMART KEY

Oxygen-sensing system maintains an optimal air/fuel mixture for the most effective catalytic reduction of exhaust emissions.

This innovative technology improves both convenience and security. As long as your key is in your pocket or bag, you can release the seat and start the engine with the press of a button.

HONDA IGNITION SECURITY SYSTEM

START MODE

Only allows the bike to be started by its original encoded keys to effectively protect against theft.

Limits engine rpm based on rider preference, even with a wide-open throttle, letting the rider focus on clutch release (and lights) alone.

HONDA SELECTABLE TORQUE CONTROL

WHEELIE CONTROL

If the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) system senses an imminent loss of rear wheel traction it reduces torque to allow the tyre to grip.

The IMU measures the pitch angle and, combined with front and rear wheel speed, manages the amount of height the front wheel gathers relative to the level of intervention selected. Level 1is minimum Wheelie Control, level 2 medium and level 3 maximum. Wheelie Control can also be switched off completely.

SECOND-GENERATION SEMI-ACTIVE ÖHLINS ELECTRONIC CONTROL (S-EC) The Öhlins NPX fork uses a pressurised damping system to minimise cavitation, resulting in more stable damping control and improved bump absorption at high speeds. Feel for front tyre grip is also enhanced. The rear shock is also by Öhlins; the upper mount attaches at the back of the engine to enhance high-speed handling.

LAUNCH CONTROL FOR FAST STARTS The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP is equipped with Launch Control for race starts. It limits engine rpm at 6,000, 7,000, 8,000 and 9,000rpm set-points, even with a wide-open throttle, letting you focus on clutch release (and lights) alone. A quickshifter is also fitted as standard, with performance optimised for racetrack performance and reliability.

Let's get into the 2020 Suzuki Their 2020 launch revealed a few new pieces that we hadn't seen on the bike at previous tests

It seems that Suzuki have three different versions of their GXXRR frame. Make sure you check the image descriptions for all the details!

A new frame and a new swingarm, it seems that Suzuki essentially have a completely new package for 2020 which is an evolution on the 2019 bike.

Here is the 2020 bike that was unveiled on the 6th of February Two important things to note here. The vertical strut of the frame is much thinner than the 2019 version and has this 'wave' to it. It tapers in, towards the back of the clutch and then tapers back out and becomes thicker at the bottom. Divert your attention to the "S" of Suzuki on the bellypan. Follow the frame straight up from there and you'll see Also, the 2020 Suzuki has a new swingarm. It now features a 'hole'. The old swingarm was solid, Suzuki may have done this to find flex or stiffness to change the grip characteristics of the rear end of the bike, or even to reduce the weight of the swingarm

Also, at the bottom of this frame there is no form of recessed part of the frame. On both bikes in the first image, there is a small recessed part So it seems that Suzuki have three versions of their GSX-RR frame but the version seen here may well be an older version that was tested and will no longer be used. Weight is an interesting thought as Suzuki are one of the few manufacturers who have not produced a carbon swingarm. One of the main benefits of a carbon swingarm is its lightweight nature and so it puts less stress on the rear tyre and thus wears the tyre less during a race

However, both the frame and the swingarm pictured here have not been spotted at the Sepang Test, so they may have been older parts tested at previous test and just used for the photoshoot. Looking closely at the mount holes for the rear set (the two holes, one above and one below the swingarm pivot). They are incorporated completely into the body of the frame. Now go back and look at the bike Suzuki which took Alex Rins to his on the left in the first image, on that bike the 2019 st 1 victory in Silverstone two holes stick out the back of the frame.

Here it is, the all new 20202 Aprilia RS-GP Flicking back and forth between this and the next image we can see the differences between the new and old bike The first thing we notice is how different the complete package looks, the aero has changed, the frame is different and of course we can't ignore the new exhaust that exits out past the tail unit Aprilia have said that the changes to the frame geometry were out of necessity, not just because of the new 90° engine, but also to help the Aprilia's weight distribution Aleix spoke of how the Aprilia now feels much better at the front end, with the bike now turning easily once off the brakes The new engine is also much faster, we saw that across the three day test in Sepang it was consistently in the top half of the speed trap classifications, only 1-2 km/h down on the Ducatis. However, Aleix says there is more to come as currently the new engine lacks low down grunt and acceleration

US LEGEND CARS CHAMPIONSHIP LAUNCHED

The top contenders in all three classes drove a textbook race to claim victory in race 1 and extend their championship lead in the Toyota Vios Challenge held at the Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang. Tengku Djan Ley, Hayden Haikal and Shawn Lee put up an exceptional drive to win the Super Sporting, Sporting and Promotional class races respectively to put them comfortably ahead in the overall point standings.

Djan takes 11 point lead to sic

The Super Sporting class saw an extraordinary demonstration of skill by 23 Motors’ Tengku Djan who led the race from pole position to finish 5 seconds clear of Laser Motor Racing’s Mark Darwin and Dream Chaser’s Brendan Paul Anthony. Tengku Djan made a flawless start from the front of the grid and by the first two laps was already 2.3 seconds ahead of Kegani Racing’s Kenny Lee. Lee’s race however, came to abrupt end on lap 9 when he clipped the wall. That brought out the safety car for four laps essentially erasing whatever lead Tengku Djan had built up, and promoted Mark and Brendan into second and third positions respectively. “The conditions this afternoon were super hot and everyone struggled with grip. Mark was fast and I had to just focus and drive to the best of my ability. This track is also not forgiving. It was a great race and I just got into a rhythm and maintained a good pace to the finish,” said Tengku Djan. “The race was tough on both tyres and brakes. You have to go fast but you have to be smooth and can’t over cook it. You have to carefully pick and choose where you can push the car. It was not easy. If you just continue to push too hard you will end up hitting the wall.”

US LEGEND CARS CHAMPIONSHIP LAUNCHED

Malaysia’s very first oval racing series has been announced with the official launch of the 2020 LIQUI MOLY US LEGEND CHAMPIONSHIP that will feature six rounds at Perak’s T-City Gopeng Motor Speedway, currently the only purpose-built oval circuit in Malaysia. The Championship will feature an Arriveand-Drive Legend Car class for amateur and professional drivers, and the Bandolero class for children between the ages of 8 and 15. First introduced in Malaysia in 2018, this is the first time the Legend Car and Bandolero Car classes will be introduced as a full-fledged championship.

i-Moto Local news! The arrive-and-drive Legend Car class will see drivers competing in identical race cars with a minimum car and driver weight of 590kg, and powered a factorystock Yamaha FJ1200 engine rated at 132 brake horse power. The Bandolero class for children meanwhile, will feature cars powered by 30 brake horse power 570cc Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engines with a minimum combined car and driver weight of 340kg. The power-to-weight ratio of the race cars make it extremely quick and agile compared to racing a traditional saloon car and competing on a 240-metre asphalt oval circuit almost guarantees close and fierce competition from start to finish. Former Legend Car drivers who have gone on to establish successful careers in NASCAR include two-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr and Kyle Busch who holds the record for the most all-time wins in all three of NASCAR's national touring series with 208 wins and is the 2015 and 2019 NASCAR Cup Series champion. Also included are 2020 Daytona International Speedway

Speedweeks’ winners Joey Logano, William Byron, Noah Gragson and Grant Enfinger. Entry fee for the arrive-and-drive Legend Car class is RM3,000 per round, and includes preparation and rental of the race car, fuel, tyres, brake pads as well as other consumables and technical support. Entry fee for the Bandolero Car class meanwhile, is RM2,000 per round also inclusive of all the above. Round 1 of the championship starts on 13 march followed by Round 2 on 17-18 April; Round 3 from 19-20 June; Round 4 from 17-18 July; Round 5 on 21-22 August; with the sixth and final round to be contested on 25-26 September. To participate or for more information, contact US Legend Cars Malaysia Motorsports Director Stephen C.H. Loh at 019-3586868, email to s.loh66@yahoo.com, or contact the US Legend Cars Malaysia Head Office at +605-241 3560 or email to uslcmy@gmail.com.
