Imagine back in 2014 when Yamaha Motors release the CP3 850cc 3cylinder engine, as a darkside naked bike, and being one of the torquiest bike you can find and for the riders who wants the adrenaline rush everytime you open the throttle! MT09 has re-positioned Yamaha as a top dog in the sport naked category. Well…. i loved the torque so much I went and got one my self one back in 2015, and now fast forward to 2018, and Yamaha has updated the MT-09 with ABS, new electronics, like traction control and new headlamps and rear splash guards etc. So comparing with my own, MT09 which i named it Hoonigan, so here is I’m definitely sure that the MT-09 is a superb value buy.
Riding out of Yamaha when i collected the test bike, the front tyre pressure was low (140kPa when ideally its should be 240kpi or 34psi) well I headed straight to the petrol pump to fill up the front and add and check the back tyre. Tyre pressure will significantly makes you handle the bike you’re riding, better!. Well, I’m going straight to the point here about the handling of the new MT-09, as this was also the issue with the previous generation MT-09. The suspensions are still soft even with the new suspension updated the 2018 model with adjustable spring preload and rebound-damping features at the front while the rear remains the same. I send to my trusty workshop Chia Motor just to get it harder, but its still felt too soft in the corners especially bumpy corners and at high speed on the highways with the new MT-09 tends to feel like floating if you ride on the uneven highways. The “floating” feel gets you the feeling like on a small boat and if the roads have ripple or holes with speed-up to 170km/h definitely feel like a speed boat and hit a big ripple you are most likely to get a baby wheelie or a minor tankslap ( i mean really minor) but don’t worry, if you are not riding it as hard as we did to test out the suspensions. As for city commuting riders the new suspensions are for comfy rides. but for more aggressive riders who really want to ride with all out with this torque machine gotta be ready, to set or change the suspension immediately according to the riders weight, or better look for an after market front springs and change the stock rear suspension for better handling, because you never utilised the full power of the MT-09 without this upgrade.
i-moto.my
But the designers at Yamaha said, the MT-09 was design for comfort street riding with enough torque from the 115hp CP3 engine to pull away from a Ferrari at the traffic light. Yamaha designed the suspensions softer for the mass market and so be it if you are not intending to change the suspension shock oils or just harden the suspension, Its still a great package to own for this CKD 2018 ABS MT-09 is a pretty good value for money consider all the new stuff you get with the 2018 model.
The new engine sound smooth actually too quite. Also updated mapping gives the throttle response instead of the twitchy throttle of the older model. The two step Traction Control when switching TC 1 and TC 2 need to off the throttle for a second and switching the TC off cannot be done without stopping, The quick shift need to back off the throttle like 3% to get it shifting upgear but does not do down shifting but if over 4k rpm the quick shifter is smooth. Just need to get use to the quickshifter. New LED Projector headlamp and Diavel looking LED rear lights makes the new addition to the Darkside!
i-moto.my
When the MT-09 CKD was launched RM44,653 was the price tag for previous generation with GST but without roadtax and insurance, while the 2018 model was launched with price of RM47,388, so with additional of RM2,735 you will get 2-step Traction Control, ABS and Ride Mode, new designed covers and panels, a new splash guard design which now holds the number plate at the rear wheels instead of traditional jutting out from under the rear brake lights, and with updated front suspensions make the 2018 MT-09 a value buy for those who is looking for a thrilling ride!
i-moto.my
But I don't recommend to beginner’s bike even with the power modes. Riding even in the ’low-power B’ mode, most beginners who are not used to riding a sportbike could get themselves into trouble with the quickness and its torque!

Riders embark on a journey to Phuket Bike Week fuelled & lubricated by Petronas over 1200km

Petronas Lubricants International (PLI) launched the latest PETRONAS Sprinta with UltraFlex™, a new range of motorcycle lubricants for customers in Thailand, in conjunction with the Phuket Bike Week 2018, here. Formulated to resist engine stress and promote a longer bike life, the flagship motorcycle lubricants which was launched in March last year, addresses the core requirements of motorcycle riders who want reliable and better quality rides. “Motorcycle is an important vehicle, either for leisure or as a primary mode of transport for a large number of people in Thailand. Regardless its purpose, extensive usage and exposure to heavy traffic put a lot of stress on the engine,” said PLI Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe D’Arrigo, who addressed the bikers at Phuket Bike Week. Bike stress is often caused by high shear conditions that results from severe mechanical strain and high temperature inside the engine. These conditions lead to rattling and sluggish performance. Combining PLI’s century-long expertise in lubricant technology and consumer-focused innovation, PETRONAS Sprinta with UltraFlex™ is formulated with strong oil film that enhances oil stability to tackle the effects of bike stress and provide better riding experience and longer bike life. Tests conducted using global industry standards show that PETRONAS Sprinta with UltraFlex™ has the ability to provide a superior oil film strength that is up to 41% higher than the industry benchmark1. This alone helps the engine to endure the effects of load, speed and engine stress without breaking down, while allowing the bike to respond better. The new range of lubricants also offers exceptional deposit control, thus maintaining bike power and ride quality.

•Do : Get plenty of sleep the night before. Arrive in plenty of time and What are Track Days All About? Track Days are the most exciting, fun and effective way to improve your riding skills…period! You will learn how to corner and brake with a lot more confidence and control. And you will have a freakin’ BLAST. Track Days are held on a closed course (racetrack), which means you learn in a safe environment and at real-world speeds. Learning on a racetrack allows you to ride freely and concentrate on and advancing your skill level without the typical hazards faced on the street…potholes, sand, tar snakes and cars.
pace yourself. Track days can be extremely tiring both mentally and physically, especially if you have a long drive to and from the track. Once the adrenaline wears off it would be pretty common to find yourself feeling exhausted
•Do : some basic checks on your bike. Are all the fluids topped up? Do you have plenty of meat left on your brake pads? Is anything loose or likely to fall off? Is there likely to be enough tread on your tyres after the track day to drive home legally? Checking these few simple things out a week or so in advance of the track day could mean the difference between having a great fun day on track and going home early with a broken bike because you forgot to do something simple like check it had any oil in it! (yes we’ve seen it happen)
•Do : Bring the right attitude. Track days are all about like minded people having fun, riding their bike hard in a safe environment on a race track. Respect the other riders and their bikes when out on track with you.
•Do : a warm up lap. When you first head out on track your tyres, brakes, engine and gearbox will all be relatively cold. We see a surprising amount of people tearing off down the pitlane on their first session, bouncing off the rev limiter and quite often ending up in the gravel trap at the first corner. Don’t be that guy! Take it easy coming out of the the pitlane, take it easy round the first few corners and build your speed up gradually over the course of a lap or two. This will allow everything to warm up nicely and will help you get a feel for what the grip levels are in a more controlled manner.

wrench and to the correct torque setting for your bike. It only takes 2 minutes to check them. It’s a good idea to check them again once or twice throughout the day too.
So, for the love of all that is holy, before your first track day, please, please do your research. Don’t be be a lunatic trackday goer. And don’t let hubris get the better of you.
track day is no fun at all, you’ll feel terrible and probably won’t enjoy your day, plus it’s dangerous. Also don’t go nuts on the energy drinks, once the adrenaline starts flowing you’ll be pretty pumped up as it is and too much can have an adverse effect on your riding.
•Don’t : Forget to tighten your wheel nuts – preferably with a torque •Don’t : Be afraid to ask for help! Get some tuition. If you’ve never ridden on track before, a quick session with an instructor or another experienced track day goer can be invaluable. It will make you go faster, be safer and be a better rider. Similarly if you need help with your bike, don’t be afraid to ask. Chances are you’ll find the paddock at a track day is full of experienced and knowledgeable individuals. Most will be happy to give you a dig out if your stuck.
•Dont: Race. Track days are not the place for racing. A lot of people bring their daily ridden bike and their pride and joy to track days and a genuine concern for a lot of people is that their bike will get damaged by someone else who thinks they’re taking part in a round of the MotoGP or WorldSBK Championship.

Surya won Race 1, which was competed on a wet track following an early morning shower in Sepang; beating Luth Harith to second place and defending champion Muhammad Aiman Tahiruddin taking third place.
“I would like to thank the team for borrowing me the bike for race. Despite paying a very special low price, they prepared the bike very well. This race suit I am wearing today is also borrowed. The races were very tough today; but I am happy that I won it. Hopefully, I can go all the way and win the championship,” said Surya, who competed in three rounds last year with mixed results. “There was a few podium wins last year; and I truly enjoyed the competition.
