This was the biggest GIVI Rimba Raid to date. The Class A-Group A category at GIVI Rimba Raid Janda Baik 2019, was won by Muhamad Habibullah Bin Mohd Saleh, or better known as Gabit, the 2018 defending champion won the race by a time of 48.40.440, joining Gabit, at the podium, the Wong brothers, Bee Wong Chun Hing (50.37.796) and his brother Alex Wong Chun Fah (1:19.16.837) completed the final podium spot. Prior to the race on Saturday, there was heavy down pour at Bukit Tinggi start off, so the organizer of Rimba Raid decided to delay the start of the race as sections of the 50km enduro trails was at impossible conditions. The condition were still treacherous still even with the delay. The race started 11.30am, with Bee Wong headed the Class A group off the start line. Defending the title was not an easy task as Gabit who was riding a KTM 1050 Adventure fell 3 times and broke the front brake lever in the first fall. This year Rimba Raid saw Dakar rider Jeremias Isreal, (Team Givi) and more than 20 riders from Thailand and Singapore taking part. GIVI Rimba Raid organizer Dato’ Captain Nik Huzlan said the trail was going to be tough Rimba Raid especially for novice riders and he was not joking, average rider would take around 2 hours to complete the 50++km enduro in the Pahang forest reserve . In fact, he dubbed the third and final

section as “The Green Hell.” would be the most difficult section. If the fastest rider completes the 50km trail under 2 hours, all riders would have to go through “The Green Hell” once more to complete the race. This years starting order draw was randomly generated by computer. We can understand why the organiser, choose this draw generation as luck play a big part in the jungle trails. Jeremias Isreal who was position in mid pack of the starting line, was having a good pace overtaking slower riders but unfortunately got tangle up with a fallen rider and he had to throw the bike to avoid hitting the rider and marshall who was helping the fallen rider. The incident had caused his ABS system on the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE to turn on and off. Even for expert riders like Gabit and Jeremias say Rimba Raid 2019 is tough, and for the rest of the competitors it was even a tougher race, but not an impossible race, as out the 150 riders who started the event, 40 were stuck.

Class A big dual-purpose had 70 entry but only 17 finished. We experience about 30km out of the 50++km and we know the Rimba Raid experience now as a not competitor carrying the organiser Sony action camera and riding along the same route as the competitors, we had the real chance to experience the Rimba Raid tough and hardcore trails 1st hand. Mentally and physically couple with off-road skill is much needed to complete the enduro tails. Class B (for bikes 800cc and below) was won by Shamsul Azhar Bin Abu Hazim, better known as Acoi Pangkolo on the newly launch AJP7. Class C for dirtbikes up to 250cc was won by Muhammad Hazlami Bin Mustapha Kamal. With 150 participants from 16 countries, up from 105 of 11 nationalities. The 2019 Givi Rimba Raid is the biggest and the toughest yet, and plans for next years Rimba Raid 2020 is already in the drawing board, said Dato’ Captain Nik. Congratulation to all the finishers and all the participants.

Great Fun Ninja!

oad test: 2019 KAWASAKI NINJA 400 The blitz of fun, nimble, practical, and affordable supersport bikes continues with Kawasaki’s all new 2019 Ninja 400, which replaces, the Ninja 300 originally introduced in 2015. This road test is about Kawasaki’s new mid-sized supersports. Expect the Ninja 400 to be ridden on road and track and the experience would be a blast!

400

i-Moto Overall, the new Ninja 400’s engine is everything you’d expect from a modern day Kawasaki motor: compact, powerful, reliable and fuel efficient. You realistically couldn’t ask anything more from a mid-sized engine at this price point. Although Kawasaki had upgraded the engine to 399 capacity from its predecessor the Ninja 300, they managed to squeeze a 35% increase in torque and horse power between 3-7,000 RPM. We like how Kawasaki tends to favor low end power because it’s most practical for low speed conditions like commuting and also twisty road riding. Kawasaki’s assisted slipper clutch, which not only reduces wheel hop on overly enthusiastic downshifts, and the lever pull seems effortless. The only cable clutch bike we’ve tested with a lighter pull is the Ninja 250 is with the similar slipper clutch. Weight is 7.7kg lighter than Ninja 300 Exhaust can looks slightly similar like the previous Ninja 300. As capable as the motor is in stock form, we’re still wondering how much power could be uncorked with a full aftermarket exhaust system.

Power wise we’re looking at 46hp at 10,000 rpm and 38nm of torque at 8,500 rpm. Power delivery is very smooth all the way to 199km/h. Shifting is crisp and positive through all six speeds. Moving through the six speed gearbox is a quick and positive experience. The gear ratios felt smartly placed and had the engine working at approximately 6,000 rpm at 140km in sixth gear. Last but not least, the roughly 300 km range from the 17litre tank results in a real-world 3.36 L/100km. For a 400cc commuter bike, it’s hard to beat this kind of fuel efficiency while I was working the 400cc engine really hard at way over highway speed limit.

The completely new faring looks closer to the bigger siblings new 2019 Ninja ZX636, but the look is a largely subjective topic but we consider the update was a visually attractive modern looking package from Kawasaki. Reworked front and side fairings are slightly wider and taller and help divert air away from the rider. The beak on Ninja 400 designed more like a H2

providing a more aggressive and Ninja style look. In addition to a pre-molded plug for a 12v cigarette outlet to the left of the inner faring gives the convenience to stick a USB charging point, we give a big thumbs up to Kawasaki for including these small but usable changes. The new all-digital instrument panel has a good amount of information, but is difficult to read in direct sunlight despite the nicely designed sun shade above it. I noticed the level of contrast changed slightly with viewing angle so someone who was slightly shorter may not notice this as much. (Opting for a TFT style display would be a nice touch for Kawasaki in the future release model) Greater comfortable riding position is provided by clip-on style handlebars that give the Ninja a more sportier riding position from previous Ninja 300 model. I’ve found less handle bar vibration, especially high speed, but the front felt a little light at high speed over 170km/h but it isn’t uncontrollable even when I hit 199km/h. No excessive buzz and tingling fingers unlike

i-Moto its single cylinder competitor. But if I would own one I would lower the clip-on and place the clipon under the triple clamp. (not sure if that is even possible with the stock clip-ons) Most qualities of the new Ninja 400 have met and exceeded expectations in all major areas but there’s always room from improvement, an Up-side-down front forks would take the future Ninja 400 up another level. Despite many of the changes made to the NINJA 400, the Ninja DNA keeps its potential back as a supersport oriented bike. All LED lighting is a great upgrade over the previous generation with now dual lights is lid up. Previous generation, was one side low beam and one high beam. We test the headlights at night, the properly focused LED lights are far more brighter. The LED ZX10R styled brake-light are clearly visible in direct sunlight, but the rear turn signals are pretty ugly. (if we were to own a Ninja 400, for sure the rear would be replaced with an after market tail tidy, or just take it off, well that us folks) I felt would have been more important to replace the ugly looking side mirrors as it’s really a hassle to go through traffic. I immediately took out the side mirrors at a bicycle shop right after I rode out from Kawasaki Malaysia and replace my handlebar side mirror on the Ninja.

The Ninja 400’s foot pegs are 100% street DNA but an aftermarket would be been a nice and inexpensive touch. I’m not saying this is the case with the new Ninja 400, but it’s a detail that would have given a more comfortable and sporty riding geometry. Looking at the bike’s construction, this could be solved with the foot pegs raised up higher; however, with the standard tyres should be replaced with a stickier tyres as we were approaching the stock Dunlop Sportmax limit. Front 110/70/17 size and the rear tyre is a hefty 150/60/17 size that come standard from Kawasaki. The Sportmax surprisingly does an excellent job with all the hard riding I gave it during the road test, I was happy with the Dunlop ability to stick to the edges on tight twisty of Bukit Tinggi. While the standard footpeg clearance with the nipple intact has pretty good cornering clearance even with my low cornering angle.

The bottom link Uni-trak suspension is pre-load adjustable in the rear with 41mm KYB front. Road manners were well-behaved and provided no surprises as I carved out some of Bukit Tinggi fast twisty. The stock suspension is competent for a wide variety of riding conditions. While those demanding more from this machine will be looking to upgrade to a harder suspension, but it should be fine for most riders and matches fairly well with the intended use.

When it’s all said and done, the Ninja 400 is an amazing value for a bike which is capable of just about anything most riders would ever want. We nit-pick because it’s our job to find problems with any motorcycles, but memories of our 2013 Ninja 250 still linger as the 250 was a practical, fun, friendly and affordable bike. This Ninja 400 add more Ninja DNA, you’re arguably getting a lot of value. Kawasaki’s new Ninja 400 sits squarely in the middle between other 300cc and 650cc options with plenty to offer and a very friendly price tag too. Making the perfect bike to satisfy everyone is an impossible task, but it’s great that Kawasaki is trying and, more importantly, are responding to market feedback in a timely manner. Kawasaki’s new 2019 Ninja 400 is one of the best mid-sized sportbike on the market today. Many experienced riders looking to downsize, know you could live the rest of his life with a bike like this and be happy with a few key upgrades. At the same time, the new Ninja 400 provides a solid platform for new riders to cut their teeth in track riding, commuting and exploring twisty roads. Kawasaki is now listening more than ever to the sportbike segment, so there’s never been a better time to check out the new 2019 Ninja 400 at your local dealer or Ninja Shop.

T

he TVS Motorcycle brand is third largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India and with the official distributor

in Malaysia, Daju Motor Sdn Bhd, which recently launched 2 models, the 110cc Neo and the Apache RTR 200, now has an upgraded model Apache RTR 4V Race Edition 2.0. The Apache models have sold over 3 million units worldwide. We road-tested the new Apache RTR 4V Race Edition 2.0. Externally the new Race edition gets a new fly-screen with the sharp LED headlamp, new racing decals with the Race Edition and fork protectors. Most of the upgrade are internal, With the introduction of TVS Apache RTR 4V Race Edition 2.0, this model replaces the standard carburetor model, which was first introduced during the launch a few months back. The Race edition is the first motorcycle in its class to be equipped with an advanced A-RT (Anti-Reverse Torque) Slipper Clutch system, a TVS race-derived technology and Twin Spray Fuel-Injection technology developed with BOSCH from Germany and the throttle body by Delorto, Italy. The 5-speed engine has a deep throaty note especially low down in the rev range and all thanks to the double-barrel exhaust.

The ‘A-RT Slipper Clutch’ technology, underling the motorcycle’s performance, with 22% reduction in clutch force for quicker upshifts. The technology aims at ensuring rider safety in high-speed downshifts, avoids wheel-hopping while cornering, and improves vehicle stability which promises a sharp and precise gear shift with minimal effort. The Race edition double-cradle frame is stiff and the conventional telescopic forks up front along with a rear monoshock, going twist corner are quite an easy task without much effort, but the front suspensions are a bit on the soft side. The Apache has a commendable overtaking speed even at triple-digit speeds, TVS claim a top speed of 155km/h but on the test bike we got 146km/h, probably needed a long road to achieving that. The riding position is not much aggressive, that normal for a naked street bike so don’t worry about getting tired back over long distances. The impressive handling of the Race edition is further complemented by the decent grip from the 90/90-R17 front and 130/70-R17 rear from Pirelli Angel tyres, all thanks to which you will not feel losing out confidence even while going hard on sharp turns. A 270mm disc brake upfront along with a 240mm completes the braking set up on the Race Edition. The brakes offers impressive feedback and bite and you can rely on these in emergencies. TVS Apache RTR 4V Race Edition 2.0 directly challenges, Bajaj Pulsar NS, a brand also from India which is rebadged under Modenas.

Known primarily for their quality luggage options, GIVI has been selling a full line of helmets for years now. GIVI is no newcomer to making helmets and it shows in their HPS X.01 Tourer. Constructed with a polycarbonate shell and weighing 1,590±50gm, the Tourer is no featherweight, yet you will never feel heavy during any of you long rides. The removable visor has a moderately aggressive design that compliments the round shape of the helmet shell nicely. Weight : gr.1590±50 Visor : • Anti scratch clear visor Inner Lining : • Removable inner lining • Small smoked sun visor • Removable cheek pads • Pinlock® ready • Anallergic fabric Homologation: ECE-R22-05; Double Homologation P/J

The Givi X.16 Voyager modular helmet is the helmet suited to meet the needs of the biker who loves a full-face helmet, but during pit-stops, especially during the summer months, loves the comfort and fit of a modular helmet. Thanks to its P Homologation, the X.16 helmet can be used either in its full face mode or as a modular helmet, ie closed whilst riding and open during the pit-stops. The Givi X.16 Voyager is available in four colour options (glossy white, matt black, matt titanium and neon yellow). It is equipped with a thermoplastic shell and an improved ventilation system. The chin guard can be opened, the main visor is “Pinlock” ready and the sun visor is controlled by an internal steel cable. In addition, it is supplied equipped with a wind deflector, breath guard, a micrometric buckle for rapid release plus a removable and washable inner lining.

ESSENTIAL RIDING SKILLS TRAINING

i-RideClinic more about making you comfortable with your bike, rather than shaving off those two-tenths of a second off your lap times but still can show you how to knee down and pop a wheelie if you want. The basic aim here is to remove the everyday distractions of our roads, and provide a safe and fun environment to really see what you and your bike are capable of when enjoying the corners on your weekend rides!
