Fun Facts About Cupcakes

Cupcakes are sometimes called fairy cakes in the UK. They are small cakes designed to serve one person, can be baked in a range of cases and can be decorated with different toppings, including butter icing, cream cheese and chocolate.

Cupcakes were originally called “Number Cakes” or “1234 Cakes” cups of sugar, 3 cups of flour, 4 eggs (in America, bakers weigh ingredients in ‘cups’)

There are four basic ingredients– butter/margarine, sugar, eggs, and flour. The cake batter used for cupcakes can be flavoured and other ingredients can be added, such as raisins, berries, nuts or chocolate chips. A variety of toppings can be used ranging from plain butter icing to salted caramel chocolate. The baker can use a spoon or a piping bag to apply the topping to the cupcake. The ingredients used in cupcakes can be altered to suit vegans and people with allergies including dairy, gluten and nuts.
