Beginning Readers 16 Meg and Ed Get a Pet

Ed Sel Meg 1

Meg and Ed want a pet.

“We can get a pig,” said Meg.
2
“I want a red hen. We will have eggs,” said Ed.

Meg said.

“Can we get this little pig?”
“And this red hen?” Ed said.
3
“No, you cannot,” Sel said.

Meg and Ed go to the vet.

“There is a big cat on the bed,” Meg said.
4
“I see ten little pups in the pen!” Ed said.
“Can we get the pets?” Ed said.
“I cannot let you,” Sel said. “The pets will not fit in here.”
5
“Oh no,” Meg said.

Meg sees bugs, and Ed sees a bat. There is one rat in a bin.

6
“Do you want this pet?” said Sel. “No, we do not!” said Meg and Ed.

Meg is very sad. “We do not have a pet yet.”

“What can we do?” Ed said. “We have to get one.”

“I know what to do,” Sel said.

“What?” Meg said.

7

Ed and Meg fed the pets, and Sel let the pup hug and kiss.

“You will let us get the red hen, the little pig, the cat, and the ten pups?” Ed and Meg said. “Yes,” Sel said. “They can come.”

Jax Max Rex 9
Beginning Readers 17 Jax and the Sax

Rex and Jax see a man and a big sax.

Jax said, “What can you do on the sax?”

“I am Max,” the man said. “This is my sax, and I like to jam on it.”
10

Max said, “On my sax, I can go . . .”

Wop bop, a bep bop, bip bop bip!

“Oh, I like Max,” said Jax, “and I like the sax a lot!”

“We can give Max a tip in the box,” said Rex.

11

“Do you want to jam?” said Max.

“Yes, I do!” said Jax. “But I do not have a sax.”

“If you get a sax, come here and we will jam,” said Max.

12
“Where can I get a sax?” said Jax.
“We can go in here,” said Rex.
13
“I cannot get a big sax like Max. I will get a little one.”

“I see a sax up there,” said Jax.

“I see six new ones!” said Rex.

“But we cannot get a new one. It is a lot!”

“What can I do?” said Jax. “I want to jam like Max.”

14
“Here is a sax!” Rex said. “But it is not new.”
15
“We can fix it and put wax on it,” Jax said. Rex and Jax fix the sax. It is like new!

Max jams on the big sax, and Jax

jams on the little sax.

Wop bop, a bep bop, bip bop bip!

Rex gives Max and Jax a tip in the box.

“We have a quiz,” said Quinn.
“I cannot do the quiz,” said Zas.
18
“Yes, you can,” they said.

Quinn has a box. “Are there two pens?”

“I do not know,” Zas said. Quinn taps. “Here is one, and there is one.” Tap. Tap.

“Yes!” Zas nods. “There are two!”

19

Buzz buzz, buzz buzz.

“See the bugs?” Quinn said.

“Yes,” said Zas. “Here are two, and there are two.”

“Yes! There are four bugs,” they said. Buzz buzz, buzz buzz.

20
Zas is very sad. “I do not want to do the quiz. I want to quit!”
21
“No, you cannot quit,” said Quinn. “You can do this!”
“Sit, kids,” said Miss Boz. “I will give the quiz.”
“Zas, you know what to do,” said Quinn.
22
“Yes, I do,” said Zas.

“What is one and one?” Miss Boz said.

Zas taps. Tap, tap. “Two.”

“Yes, Zas. And what is two and two?”

“Buzz buzz, buzz buzz . . . Four?”

“Yes, four! You got it!”

23
“I did the quiz, Quinn!” said Zas.
“I know one and one is two, and two and two is four.”
24
“You did it!” said Quinn. The friends hug. “We did it.”

Beginning Readers 19 Beck Has to Pack

25
Mack Vick Beck

Tick, tock. Tick, tock. RIN RIN RIN!

“Beck!” Vick said. “You have to pack.”

Beck did not get up.

“Quick, Beck! We have to get to the dock. Your friends are there.”

“Oh,” Beck said. “I will get up.”

26

“My friends and I will hit pucks at the dock,” said Beck.

“I like to toss rocks there,” said Vick. “And I want to see the ducks.”

“Oh no,” said Beck. “I don’t have my socks. They are not on the rack.”

“Here they are,” said Vick. “Pick two.”

27

“Do you have the pucks and the lock?” said Vick.

“No, I don’t,” said Beck. “Where are they?”

“I will give you two pucks, and your lock is there.”

28
“What is on your neck?” said Vick.
“This is my pet, Mack,” said Beck.
“Mack gives a lick as a kiss. This gives us luck.”
29
“Ick!” said Vick.
“Don’t pack Mack,” said Vick. “You have to put him back in there.”
30
Beck put Mack back in. “Oh . . . you cannot come, Mack.”
“We have to go,” said Vick. “Quick! Get the sack.”
31
“I miss Mack,” said Beck.

Vick and Beck got to the dock.

“Oh no,” Beck said. “The sun is hot. We cannot hit the pucks.”

“We can go in here,” his friends said. “Who will come?”

“I will!” Beck said. “And so will Mack. Who wants a kiss?”

“I don’t,” Vick said. “Yuck!”
