“It’s time to go on the plane,” said Umm.

On the plane, Abdel and Umm dozed. They woke up to the sunrise.
“We will be miles from my friends,” said Abdel.

“You can send notes all the time,” said Umm.
At his new home, Abdel put his case on his bed.

A kid rode past on his bike and waved.
“I’m Steve. What’s your name?”
“I’m Abdel.” Abdel could see two little crabs in Steve’s box. “Who are they?”
“This is Jade and Nile,” said Steve. “Here’s a fun fact: This crab lives in a little home, but as it gets big it goes into a new home.”

blinked. “Oh, Jade and Nile will go into a new home!”

“Just like you did,” Steve said.
“Let’s make a maze so Jade and Nile can zig and zag,” Abdel said. “We can cut this box and tape it.”

“This will be fun!” said Steve.
“You take Jade,” Steve said, “and I will take Nile.”
“Go, Jade! Go, Nile!” said Abdel.

“Who will win?”
Abdel sent a note to his friends back home. “As this crab gets big, it goes into a new home. I got this fact from my new friend Steve. And if Jade and Nile can like a new home, so can I.”

Beginning Readers 28 Save the Dunes June Plum and Prune Kahu 11
Kahu and June plan to go on a hike. They walk by a cove and stop at the dunes.

“There’s a lot of life here,” said June. “No one can walk on the dunes.”

“And they can’t take the buds and plants,” said Kahu. “The poles and rope will make the dunes safe.”

Just as Kahu and June step over some rocks, they see tons of junk. Kahu gasps. “Oh no! What a mess! Who did this?”
June is mad. “I don’t know, but someone did not go by the rules. It’s so rude!”
“If we don’t pick this up, no one will.”
“We should not hike. We must save the dunes!”

June and Kahu hum a tune as they do their job. They use their hands to pick up the junk.
June grabs cans from holes, and Kahu plucks tubes from the sand. They put all the stuff in bags and in big cubes.

Next to the rocks, Kahu and June see a mom and pup.
“It’s Plum and his mom, Prune,” Kahu said. “They are so cute!” said June. “Oh no! They have plastic rings stuck on their fins!”
“Someone did not go by the rules again! Let’s use this to cut the rings.”

“Will Prune and Plum be fine?” said June.

“Yes,” said Kahu. “But we must make their home safe all the time.”

As the sun sets, Kahu and June sit on the rocks. They see Prune swim fast. Plum goes in next.
“Go, Prune! Go, Plum!” June yelled.

“You and your home will be kept safe!”

“I do as well,” Dad said. “Let’s grab the ring and go.”
“I have on my tux!” James said. “So does Bron.”
“Dad, I’m glad you are going to wed Rose,” said Bron. “We want Rose to be a stepmom to us.”

“There’s a lot of bling on the rings!” said Bron.
“I’ll bring the rings,” said James.
“You are not a king or a boss,” said Bron. “I’ll bring the rings!”
“He will not give me the rings!” James said.
“And he has to let go!” yelled Bron.
“It’s not wise to tug,” Dad said. “You are going to fling it and . . .”

“Oh no!” Dad gasped. “A ring is missing!
Where is it?”
“I don’t know . . .” James said.
“Ming, did you see where the ring went?” Bron asked. But Ming just slept.

“What are you doing?” James said. “The cat does not know where the ring is!”
“Stop yelling and let’s find the ring,” said Dad. “There is no telling where it could be.”
Bron felt sad. “Rose and Dad can’t wed if we don’t find the ring.”
James was mad. “And we can’t have a stepmom if they don’t wed!”

“It’s no use,” Dad said. “We will have to wed with just one ring.”

“I know what we can do!” James said. He and Bron made a ring to give to Rose.
Rose and Dad put on the rings and wed.
“Their wings flap very fast,” said Rose.
“They are so pretty.”

“Just like you,” said Dad.
They all had fun until it was time to ride home.
”I’m so glad you are my stepmom, I could sing!” said Bron.

“Let’s all sing,” said Rose.
When they got back home, what did they find?

“Ming does have the ring!” said Bron. “I’ll use this ring,” said Rose. “But I’ll save the ring you made me.”
