Going Green
You won't believe how many amazing experiences you can enjoy while visiting this Alabama treasure.

Tree-lined drives, majestic mountains, green valleys, placid lakes and even the occasional single car bridge are only a few of the charming scenes you’ll come across when traveling to Lake Guntersville State Park.
STAY A LITTLE WHILE //
There are several inviting options for guests to choose from when it comes to where they will lay their heads after a long day of fun. After undergoing fairly extensive renovations, the Lake Guntersville State Park Lodge now sits adjacent to 112 hotel rooms and suites. Two bluff side pet-friendly rooms are also offered. The option of staying in a lakeside cabin or a mountain-top chalet are also available. Sitting on the bank of the 69,000-acre Guntersville Reservoir, cabins are equipped to accommodate one to six people and have a sitting room, kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
And, of course, for those who would like to enjoy a more rustic experience, modern campground sites are also available.

Overlooking the lake, a number of chalets sit atop Taylor Mountain, more closely situated to the Lodge, and essentially have the same size and accommodations as the cabins. The Lodge at the park boasts some of the most breathtaking views in Alabama, and because of the many choices of accommodations, special gatherings such as weddings and company retreats are held here frequently.

Once in peril, these majestic birds have made an amazing comeback across the country in recent years, and Alabama has made significant contributions to their survival story.

DOWN THE TRAIL In nearby downtown Guntersville, quaint shops and eateries are nestled in the lakeside historic district, including the Rock House Eatery, a Southern gourmet restaurant priding itself on serving fresh, homemade food using sustainable sources.
It might be winter, but it’s still sunny here in sweet home Alabama. To read up on sun safety tips for your next nature outing, visit readlean.org/in-balance/.
Every fall, bald eagles migrate to Alabama from northern states and Canada to spend the winter enjoying more moderate temperatures and ice-free waters before returning north in the spring. Due to active habitat restoration efforts by the state’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, populations traveling here have increased, and now some eagles are nesting in the state. Several nesting pairs now reside year round in Lake Guntersville State Park, and the Park hosts Eagle Awareness weekends each January and February that offer indoor interpretive programs with guest speakers and live birds. The real draws are the guided field trips to nesting sites and the chance to see the resident and visiting eagles take to the air and tend to their new brood of eaglets. But the weekend is about more
SUPPORT
than just bird watching. The Park’s experts, including naturalist Patti Donnellan, stress the importance of habitat preservation for the eagles as well as other birds and animals and educate onlookers on the eagle’s life cycle, migration patterns and hunting and mating habits. Did you know that young bald eagles are all brown and only get their signature white cap when they reach maturity? They’re also monogamous, staying with one partner for life. During the field trips, Donnellan offers advice on how to spot the birds and distinguish them from other area birds of prey. The most important tip? Bring a camera and binoculars. The programs and tours are free, and guests are encouraged to arrive early, since they often fill up fast. Participants can also take advantage of special accommodation packages at the newly renovated Park Lodge as well as discounts at the Lodge restaurant.
Eagle Awareness Weekends are free, but donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. Consider making a small gift to help keep this educational opportunity available to all.

We all know and love the classic ways to enjoy Southern Super Foods. You can whip up a pot of plain ole grits (or add some cheese). You can eat muscadines raw or cook ‘em down into jelly. But these recipes by food blogger Jennifer Kornegay put a little twist on the traditional and are definitely worth a try.
Eat this. Don’t eat that.
In the South, we like to do things our own way. And while we could definitely cut down on the butter, salt and frying frenzy, it’s nice to know we have been doing something right. Check out these Southern Super Foods (and give yourself a little pat on the back).
You can make the grit cakes ahead and keep in the freezer for two months.

Green tomatoes:
Although not as nutritious as vine-ripened tomatoes, green tomatoes can hold their own with vitamin C, dietar y f iber, beta-ca rotene, ca lcium, potassium and some amounts of protein, phosphorus, vitamin K and magnesium. (Not that you’d want to, but never eat raw green tomatoes. They potentially carry a toxin sometimes known to be poisonous.)

Pecans:

Muscadines: Jellies, wines, juices, fruit strips—the

What is OBESITY?
Obesity is a condition in which a person has an abnormally high proportion of body fat. To determine whether or not someone is obese, a scale known as the body mass index, or BMI, is typically used.

CARPE DIEM COFFEE & TEA CO. MOBILE Carpe Diem Coffee has been inviting folks to seize the mug and drink in its goodness since it opened 19 years ago. Owner Alan Tolson first got interested in the art and science of roasting coffee while working in a local coffee shop in college. He realized then that manipulating the roasting process gave him the ability to highlight the best characteristics of any given bean. He hasn't stopped roasting, blending and creating coffees he loves to see others love since.

What sets coffee made from specially, onsite roasted beans apart? “I think two main points make a large difference: freshness and bean selection. Flavor and aroma can begin to fade rapidly in freshly roasted coffee. We roast our coffees in-house five days a week. We mark every bag of coffee we package with a ‘Roasted On’ date so our customers know exactly how fresh their coffee is.” What is your favorite coffee y’all serve? “My favorite coffee right now is our Colombian Asojardin. It is a lighter-medium roast that has notes of sweet chocolate, raspberry jam and subtle hint of grape as it cools. It has a smooth, medium body and a slightly dry finish.” What do you love about what you do? “I love that we continuously challenge ourselves and learn new elements of coffee. No two coffees from different origins roast exactly the same, nor will the same coffee from crop to crop, year to year. But the thing I most love about what I do is making people happy when they really enjoy a great cup of coffee.” carpe-coffee.com
When the original owners of Higher Ground started their company, it was for a pretty basic reason: They were tired of drinking bad coffee. From its inception in 2002, the company has remained committed to producing coffees that are definitely a cut above, both in terms of flavor and sustainability. Karen Hayes manages the business today and emphasized the importance of this commitment. What sustainable business practices do y'all use? “Higher Ground uses only organic, shade-grown, fairtrade beans. Every aspect of the business is sustainable. Our ‘1% for the Planet’ program gives one percent of our annual gross sales to environmental and educational nonprofits; we provide financial and volunteer support for several other nonprofits, including Freshwater Land Trust, Oxfam America and the Alabama Rivers Alliance. We use recycled and eco-friendly materials as much as possible in the plant and use an afterburner that reduces 98 percent of the roaster’s emissions.” What is your favorite coffee that y'all produce? “Our Sumatran. It's flavorful and bright. Our best seller is our Black Warrior Riverkeeper Blend. It's a beautiful, medium-bodied coffee, and I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't love it.” What do you love about what you do? “I just love this company! I get to meet so many people, and I've learned so much about sustainable living and business practices since I've been here. I know that we are truly making a difference in the lives of the farmers we support and the planet.” highergroundroasters.com SUPPORT

Step back with your right leg and pass the kettlebell under the left leg as the knee bends. As you bring the kettlebell up from your left hand back to your right hand, step your right leg back forward to the start position with feet together.
Resembling a cannon ball with a handle attached, kettlebells have been used as an exercise tool for centuries. And although they have reportedly been a favorite weightlifting tool for Eastern Europeans since the 1700’s, (it’s the national sport of Russia!), its popularity in the U.S. with devout weightlifters has transitioned into a favorite way for many to get stronger backs, increased cardio fitness and a more powerful core!

Bend the left knee with the kettlebell in the right arm. Keeping the kettlebell completely still, curl up (lift your left hand up a little) and look up at the kettlebell at all times. Curl down to start again.
Using a very wide stance with your toes turned out slightly, push your knees outward, and lower the kettlebell to the ground with a straight back. Pull upward as you return to the start position.

COUNTS AS CARDIO
Kettlebell moves involve most of the major muscles and joints in the body working synchronously. In real life, our bodies work this way—as a set of connected moving parts that help bodies function better in daily tasks.
The trick with kettlebells is how well you control them. Since all of the weight is distributed below the handle, gravity and momentum love to accelerate kettlebells. Your core has to work to control the gathering momentum.
Ask anyone who’s done swings, presses and pulls, and they will tell you their heart rate easily elevates into its target zone. Unlike traditional weightlifting, kettlebells use all of those cardio muscles in the legs, low back and trunk.
Rack the kettlebell so it sits in the groove between your upper arm and forearm. Using your legs (with your arm), split jump with left foot going forward and punch the kettlebell upward. Re-rack the kettlebell first then jump your feet back together.

IMPROVING SLEEP
FOR CHILDREN
HOW MANY HOURS OF SLEEP DO CHILDREN NEED?
Create Positive Bedtime Associations Work to create the attitude that sleep is a good thing, not a punishment. Avoid sending children to bed as “punishment.” Instead, instill the attitude of sleep as a healthy, relaxing part of the day. Be sure your child knows when the (reasonable) bedtime is. Talk about how rest helps their body and mind.
sleep PROBLEMS
For many children, sleep problems can be easily remedied by making a few simple adjustments to their bedtime routine. For those children who seem to experience chronic sleeplessness, it might be time to consult their pediatrician. WebMD lists the following two major categories of sleep problems as a helpful reference for parents:
Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine
NEWBORNS
12-18 hours per day
Wind Down Time
In children, dyssomnias may include:
Kids need some time to unwind physically and mentally before bed. Limit stimulating activities (like most video games, for example) and try to give kids a “break” from taxing tasks (chores, discussions of stressful topics, homework, etc.). A relaxing bath time and quieting activities will help your child gear down. This is a great time to talk to your child about the "highs and lows" of the day, pray together and affirm them before bed, even if only for a brief time. Kids love these special moments.
Sleep-onset difficulties Limit-setting sleep disorder Inadequate sleep hygiene Insufficient sleep syndrome Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
Consider the Sleep Environment
PARASOMNIAS
Sleep is more likely to happen when the environment is nonstimulating, so limit access to such devices. Consider the kind of lighting and temperature and bedding your child finds relaxing and try to provide it.
Examples of common parasomnias include: Sleepwalking Rhythmic movement disorders such as head banging or rocking

A WELLSPRING OF ART & CULTURE:
In the northwest corner of our state, the Tennessee River links four cities — Florence, Tuscumbia, Muscle Shoals and Sheffield — to form the area known as The Shoals. Each community has its own personality, but they share a common thread. Together, they are a wellspring of uniquely Alabama art and culture. Take a weekend to experience some of their offerings. Explore a rich musical heritage. Shop for fashions created by some of the country’s hottest designers. Enjoy Southern cuisine at restaurants old and new, and discover hidden gems. While two days don't hold enough time to see and do it all, it's a safe bet your first trip will not be your last.

The area’s first musician to attain major fame was W.C. Handy, known now as the “father of the blues.” He was born in Florence in 1873, and as a boy, was exposed to music in the church where his father and his grandfather served as pastors. He was the first to put the blues on sheet music, making the regional style more available to the rest of the country and the world. Every summer, the 10-day W.C. Handy Music Festival in Florence celebrates and preserves this heritage.

FAME & Muscle Shoals Sound
The Shoals is the beating heart of
In the decades following Handy, other musicians from far and wide traveled to The Shoals. The music studios FAME in Muscle Shoals and Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield became legendary after artists like The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon and Aretha Franklin recorded there in the 1960s and 1970s. Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd also recorded in The Shoals. They all came hoping to add the area's signature sound to their work, which included the talents of local musicians called The Swampers. FAME is still cutting records today, and while the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio is no longer making albums, its original location now houses the Muscle Shoals Music Foundation, which is open for tours.
Alabama’s still-growing musical legacy. For years, the area has inspired and incubated artists and bands; today, a new crop is taking the country by storm. So where does all this talent come from? Perhaps it’s in the water, gurgling forth from the "singing river.” That's what Native Americans called the Tennessee River, describing the gentle babbling they heard as currents flowed over the rocky shoals.

Alabama Chanin
Ivy Green
Alabama Chanin’s shop in Florence proves you can’t judge a book by its cover. The storefront is in an industrial park, attached to the facilities where the company designs, sews and dyes its clothing. It may look like a warehouse on the outside, but inside, racks of hand-sewn dresses, shirts and skirts are artfully displayed along with a thoughtful selection of books and home decor that complement designer Natalie Chanin’s creations. She’s become a household name in the world of high fashion, thanks to the timeless appeal of her feminine but just a little funky designs. She’s also a hero in the “Southern-made” movement, thanks to her commitment to sustainability and quality. All Alabama Chanin pieces are made with organic cotton grown in the United States (some of it in Alabama), given their muted hues with natural dyes, and most are hand-sewn. Grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat at the shop’s recently opened café while you’re there.
There’s more than musical history in the Shoals; one of our state’s most famous women, Helen Keller, lived in Tuscumbia. At her childhood home, Ivy Green, you can touch the well pump where Helen and her teacher Mrs. Sullivan had their miraculous breakthrough. The simple clapboard home holds other treasures as well, including Helen’s Braille typewriter, her letters and other personal items.

Tom's Wall For the past three decades, Tom Hendrix has been busy hand building a stone wall on the edge of the Tennessee River near the Natchez Trace. Called Tom’s Wall, it is a labor of love he is erecting to memorialize the journey his great-greatgrandmother made more than 150 years ago. A member of the area’s Yuchi tribe, when she was only a girl, she was removed with many other Native Americans and forced onto the infamous Trail of Tears to a reservation in Oklahoma. She escaped the reservation, and it took her five years, but she finally made it home. The Wall is a testament to her strength.

There’s no shortage of restaurants in the Shoals, but you can’t leave the area without trying these three.
Odette Trowbridge's In downtown Florence, grab a stool at the counter in Trowbridge’s and treat yourself to something sweet. Still owned by its founding family, this spot is the epitome of a Southern small-town icecream parlor. It's been in the same spot in downtown Florence since 1918, making it the city's oldest business still operating in its original location. Floats, milkshakes and other cold creamy confections are all delicious, but the signature dish is Trowbridge’s homemade orange pineapple ice cream, made using a family recipe. // 316

This new restaurant in an old building opened i n dow ntow n Florence i n November 2013, but it's already gained a loyal following thanks to an inviting atmosphere and Chef Josh Quick's innovative takes on familiar flavors as well as a commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Start with the red curry deviled farm eggs, and try the pork loin over rice noodles seasoned with peanut vinaigrette and spicedjust-right green curry. This dish alone is enough to bring you back to the area.

Talk It Out If you notice any of these changes in yourself, your teenager, your spouse or a friend, it is worth a conversation. But make sure they know you are coming from a place of love, not judgment. Of course, help cannot come unless the individual admits there is a problem. Denial is a powerful component of drug addiction.
Drug Abuse Prescription
Take heart in knowing you are not alone, and take courage in knowing help is closer than you think.
The most commonly abused drugs are opioids (pain relievers), depressants (think sleeping aids) and stimulants (think ADHD medication).
When Good Drugs
GET BAD
One doesn’t become addicted to them overnight; improper use is the stepping stone to addiction. Improper use of a prescribed drug includes taking someone else’s prescription, taking a prescription medication in a way other than how it’s prescribed and taking a medication to get high. It’s a slippery slope, and what starts out as being seemingly harmless quickly destroys lives instead of healing them.

Deodorant. Facial lotion. Makeup. Body wash. Sunscreen! We use these products every day, but have you ever checked out the ingredients? Unfortunately, many of them contain chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects. And although applying a little deodorant every day may not be a big deal, if you start thinking about the number of products used and the number of chemicals in each, the alarming statistics stack up quickly.

ithout realizing it, every day we are breathing in sprays and powders, swallowing chemicals off our lips and hands or soaking up ingredients through our skin. These products also end up in rivers and streams, making them harmful to both us and our environment.
According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (safecosmetics.org), the cosmetics industry is allowed to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care products with no required testing or monitoring of health effects and no true labeling regulation. Products and the ingredients in them are often not reviewed or approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before they are sold to the public.

There's some good news too. Did you know that even though the European Union has banned over 1,000 ingredients from cosmetics, the FDA has only banned a handful? Not acceptable. By refusing to buy products that contain the questionable ingredients, you are already advocating for safer products. Want to take it a step further? Overwhelmed? Don’t be.
Start with one of your personal care products— research it and find a better alternative—then slowly do the same with your other products. In no time you will significantly decrease your levels of toxic exposure. You can even make a simple recipe at home to replace things such as face wash and face lotion for a fraction of the cost with a safer product.

Easily decrease your toxic exposure by changing your personal care routine. Because minimal regulations are put on labeling as well, it’s hard to see through marketing ploys and recognize what’s safe and what needs to be skipped. While our worst offenders list references just a few, resources like The Environmental Working
