ROGERS

I

f you’ve been in the world of Dallas real estate for more than a blink, you’ve heard the name Rogers Healy. You might know that he’s the Owner/CEO of Rogers Healy and Associates Real Estate, known by some as the official real estate partner of both SMU Athletics and the Dallas Mavericks. And you might know that he also owns Healy Property Management and Healy Global Real Estate and Relocation, a concierge based real estate and relocation company

you may also recall that his guerrilla marketing techniques have earned him kudos and criticism alike from folks all over the industry. “I don’t want anyone I meet to have to ask me what I do for a living,” Rogers said, point-blank. And it would be fair to assume that he’s well on his way to making that goal a reality. His six-foot, five-inch frame, his style, and his larger-thanlife personality make him hard to miss, and he certainly fits right in with his celebrity clientele.

Curious about the unique 'pluralness' of his first name? Rogers, with an "s", is his sweet momma's maiden name. Rogers' dad, Todd, founded C3 Financial Partners in Dallas. His parents have been married for 46 years — the ideal example of a successful, fun-filled marriage for newlyweds Abby and Rogers, who married in September 2020.

Rogers is living a social and professional life that many would kill for, and he knows it. He’s spent 21 years building it on purpose. If there’s one thing Rogers values, it’s being intentional. What might come as a surprise, though, is the hollow picture he paints of the glitz by which he’s surrounded. “To be perfectly honest, I’m at a point right now,” he said, “where I’m having to unlearn a lot of things.” He held up a sticky note he keeps on his desk that reads: “I’m tired of seeing the worst in people.” These days, he finds himself drawn to the authentic — in people, things and moments.

If you follow market forecasts closely, you may have seen him on TV, as he’s the real estate expert for multiple news channels, including but not limited to FOX Business News, CNBC, Yahoo! and MSNBC, and in all his spare time he hosts a show called Selling Mega Mansions. And if you’ve been around for a few years and have gotten to witness his journey from any vantage point,

There’s no doubt that more than two decades in a cut-throat industry can get to even the thickest-skinned among us. “You do something long enough, and you just get battle scars,” he said, “You begin to look at the world through a different lens.” The remedy? Getting back to the basics. He discussed practical steps he’s taking to restructure the business(es), and is focusing on stability,

15

scaling, and bandwidth, but it seems like more of a focus on health than on expansion for expansion’s sake. There’s nothing especially out of the ordinary about this, other than the fact that, by his own admission, “It’s so I can have a life for the very first time in my adult career.” He admitted, too, that it’s something he should’ve done 21 years ago, but he joked that a background in advertising and psychology didn’t give him all the lessons in structured business and finance that he wishes it would have. As a result, he’s going back and correcting some missteps he’s made along the way.

Rogers describes himself as a stubborn person with a quick pace who’s tired of having to learn about heat by burning his hands on the cooktop. A few years ago, he endured an anxiety-induced wake-up call that spurred him into an emotional, spiritual, and professional reset. “I always took a lot of pride in never being stressed, but then I realized one day that, actually, my entire life was stress,” Rogers continued, “I took pride in not being a micro-manager, but then I realized I was the ultimate micro-manager. I took pride in being a great multitasker, but then I realized there was no such thing as a multi-tasker.” With stunning self-awareness, Rogers described that soul-searching

moment: “I thought, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ My whole life is defined by a real estate company I started because I literally didn’t know what I wanted to do. And I was sick of being a Dallas sellout.” While Rogers dropped several revelatory truth bombs throughout our conversation, perhaps his spiciest take was pointing out that despite career polls generally listing real estate agents as having the happiest careers in the world, “What I've found is truly successful real estate agents are actually some of the unhealthiest people in the world,” he said, “Because you can’t turn it off. Especially if you’re driven by money.” He described his own journey on the real estate hamster wheel of anxiety and exhaustion, and how he’s finally figuring out how to heed the warning signs and step back when necessary, displaying the fact that he is living proof that real estate professionals are not doomed to be walking balls of anxiety, nor do they have to be slaves to the dollar. In his opinion, the whole industry could use an overhaul of core values. Rogers suggests: “The real estate industry, right now, needs humble, servant-hearted people who don’t change who they were before they entered real estate.”

This is all part of the unlearning, he said. While “going back” or “unlearning” may sound like regression to some, to Rogers, it’s just part of the evolu16

tion — of the company and also of himself. Since the pandemic, the company experienced more than 50% growth, tripling in staff and increasing production by more than 40%. A big reason for this growth is the focus on building a phenomenal team — one consisting of true servant-leaders, Rogers said. That will continue to be a big focus in the coming years, as good people attract good people.

Good people attract good people.

the load to be shared in a way it hasn’t before. Instead of focusing on his personal brand, he’s spending more time, energy, and resources on pouring into his team and strengthening the core of the company. The 41-year-old is newly married, and though he’s not yet a parent, Rogers said he believes he’s getting a small taste of fatherhood in that he’s setting others up for success and enjoying watching them 'own' their accolades to be their own.

“I’m learning that it can’t just be about ME. Which is a hard thing for people with an ego like mine.”

Additionally, mentorship, Rogers said, has been incredibly important in his life and the life of his company. Besides his dad, Todd, whom he calls his ultimate hero, he’s got a select few people who have guided him as a businessman, a leader, and a man of faith. They’ve been invaluable in helping him navigate recent revelations. Rogers approached one of his mentors after a painful falling out with a colleague. He expected to spend a week or two working through that situation with him, but six years later, they still meet every week! Rogers said these meetings have been instrumental in helping to identify his personal blind spots, weaknesses, and how he can be a better leader for those around him. He calls himself a walking billboard for the importance of mentorship.

The thing about humility is that we usually acquire it after it humbles us in an unpleasant way. But, as Rogers put it, “I have to be humbled every once in a while. I have to feel it so I can speak from a place of experience.” The difference between Rogers and many of us, though, is that he’s been a public figure for nearly two decades now, and many of these (sometimes painful) lessons have been learned in public. When asked how he handles public failure, he simply responded: “When you have a background in failing, you get used to it. But you do have to own it. Admit when you’re wrong, admit when you missed it. You’ve got to embrace the failure.”

As a result of being a mentee, he’s now taking on more of an active mentor role himself, building structure into the company that allows

His ability to embrace reality, which sometimes includes failure, is what he credits with drawing people to himself and his brand. “Of course,”

“I sucked at everything before real estate. I have a background in not having a date to prom, not making money, not getting good grades, and never making a sports team.”

HEALY

he continued, “We back it up with selling a lot of real estate, but the point is that it’s not just about that.” He went on to describe this “background in failing” before his real estate breakthrough, beginning as a kid who was bullied his entire life:

This version of Rogers may seem all but unrecognizable — especially to his nearly 40,000 social media followers.

One thing that’s always been a part of his life is music. It was a lifeline to him as a kid, and remains one of his greatest sources of joy now. A quick scroll through his Instagram profile highlights his deep love of music and an incredible collection of stories that could probably be converted into its own documentary. In fact, Rogers has become something of a global expert in music memorabilia and holds some records for his impressive collection of treasures, (including Michael Jackson’s face mold from the Thriller music video).

If you’re also a music connoisseur, you might enjoy tuning in to Instagram as he’s shares a story of how he became friends with your favorite musician, or giving a behind-thescenes peek into a rare piece of album art — all from inside his own music room, which is dedicated to displaying some of the coolest music memorabilia you’ll find anywhere. His depth of knowledge and breadth of experiences put him in a unique category, and I would bet that if you named five of your favorite artists, Rogers would have a personal story to share about them. He says that while real estate is his career, music is his passion.

Real estate is his career, music is his passion. I think this is also one of the reasons people are drawn to him as a person — it’s refreshing to be around people who have interests and passions outside their career. Rogers’ vulnerability and commitment to, as he said, “having a life for the first time in 21 years,” is not only admirable but necessary, and the value of his pushing back against the industry’s pervasive “hustle culture” is immeasurable.

L-R: Rogers with @billyfgibbons: one of the kindest rockstars he's ever met. His perfect combo. Abby, the most beautiful woman on earth, digging for the most amazing tunes…at their favorite store @joseyrecord Bell Biv DeVoe, one of Rogers' all time favorite music groups I’ve had the good fortune of meeting and making friends with some of my music heroes, and Micky has proven to be one of the best there is! I’ve been a Monkees fan for 40+ years! 18

Rogers with Nancy Holzwarth, the founder of this magazine, for this photoshoot.

The evolution of Rogers’ companies will be exciting to watch, but his personal evolution promises to be even more impactful. As he continues to learn (and unlearn) what it takes to be a leader, businessman, a music guru, and person of faith, we may see less of his face across the metroplex, but I bet we’ll see more of his heart. You can learn more about his work at rogershealy.com, and you can follow his musical journey on Instagram @RogersMusicTour.

Things

About a Real Estate Pro ... :1: One thing we might not know about you: She once got to fly the Fuji Blimp over Texas Stadium during a Cowboy’s game. She was on the blimp with 10 American Airline pilots and they let her fly the blimp!

:2: What lead you to this career? Tracy was a real estate investor for 35 years, and along the way she met Tracey Monts Curtis, who was in the warranty industry at that time. Years later, Tracey Monts Curtis recruited her to the title business at Capital Title.

:3: Best advice for someone new in real estate? Get your database of contacts together and work them. She says, “You know plenty of people so think outside the box - your hairdresser, landscaper, nail technician, etc. Always remember, each and every person you come across. Even if they don’t use you, they can always refer you.”

:4: What sets Capital Title apart from other title companies? We are committed to helping our clients grow a successful business, and we believe that’s how we have continued to grow ours. At Capital Title you are more than a customer, you are a friend of the family!

Edie

Edie Leon was fresh off the plane from Disneyland when we connected for her interview. It was her husband’s kids’ first experience at the theme park, she said, but growing up in California, “It was an every-other-weekend thing” for her. 30 October 2021 / Real Estate Influencers

If you didn’t know Edie, you wouldn’t grasp the poetic justice displayed in her growing up around the corner from The Happiest Place on Earth. Edie and her family made up five of the 125,000 Cuban refugees that made their way to the US in 1980. She was eight-years-old. “We had the clothes on our back and a jug of water,” she recalled.

While her parents sheltered her from the turbulent reality as best they could, she remembers the fear she felt as she hid under her aunt’s bed, waiting for her father’s signal from across the island. Her family — and anyone who wanted to escape the communist regime — were considered traitors. They had to make a covert escape.

The beginning of her journey to America began in a refugee camp where her family waited for a fishing boat — their vessel of liberation — to take them to the land of the free! She has vivid memories of those first few nights: “I remember the struggles. I remember the limitation of food, drink, and medicine. I remember the showers on the beach.” When they finally arrived on the shores of the Land of the Free, Edie had an encounter she’ll never forget. “My first experience with an American was the US Marine who picked us up,” she recalled. And he came bearing gifts: Her first piece of bubblegum. “I’d never had anything like it,” Edie laughed. “But I’ll always associate Hubba Bubba Bubblegum with that memory. It was a powerful moment for me.” They landed in another refugee camp where they were retrieved by some of their Stateside relatives. “The rest was up to us,” Edie said, “And my parents immediately started working.” In Cuba, Edie’s mother was an English professor and her father was an engineer. Education was ultimate, she said, which explains her natural knack for teaching and coaching. However, the ceilings in Cuba at the time were low for even the most schooled citizens: “Everyone was well-educated but starving,” said Edie. Even still, her parents’ schooling was what gave them a head start of sorts, she explained. It’s what gave them a foundation to build on when they decided to make the move from Florida to California.

“My passion and drive to succeed came from my parents,” she said proudly. Even as English was her family’s second language, Edie watched as her mother worked and studied to get her PhD in her 40s. “From working in a factory to getting a PhD, she just continued to better herself,” Edie noted. Then she watched as her sister acquired a master’s degree in education and her father moved from engineering into real estate.

My passion and drive to succeed came from my parents, she said proudly.

It was a wonder to behold: “I remember in Cuba we weren’t allowed to own property, but now we could,” she said, adding that her family also began to celebrate birthdays and holidays for the first time. “It was just amazing,” she said through a reminiscent smile, “I knew exactly how blessed I was.” Her father eventually became a lender, and at 19, Edie began working in the family business. It was a natural fit, so she got her real estate license and never looked back. Any good REALTOR© will tell you real estate is a people business that relies heavily on relationships. As Edie jokingly said, “Getting your real estate license doesn’t mean you get your ‘people skills’ license!” While some have to work at their people skills, she never did. “I’ve always loved people,” she said October 2021 / Real Estate Influencers 3 1

10 percent of her office. Her own personal mantra has always been: “Whatever you choose to do, be the best, and take yourself to the highest level.”

In 2005, Edie decided that 30 years’ worth of California dreamin’ was enough, and she was ready for a change. She followed her sister to Texas. “I fell in love immediately. I loved all of it,” she said. “The community, the culture, the lifestyle — it just pulled me right in.”

For 16 years Edie made her home in one of the nation’s largest corporate brokerages. She was even asked to write the training manual for new agents. “That’s when I realized that I really had something of value to offer,” said Edie. This revelation caused to her reevaluate her own career, which resulted in her opening up her own brokerage earlier this year: Local Realty Agency.

She came for the sweet tea and country dancing but stayed for the favorable real estate market. As soon as she got her Texas license, she hit it hard with a goal of being a top producer and staying in the top

Her goal? To go backwards. “The corporate machine has lost the real purpose of a brokerage,” Edie lamented. She’s taking it back to the basics with a “less is more” approach, and has since written a

This car brings Edie back to her days in Havana second manual tailored to help new agents generate leads. This is the model she’s built her brokerage on as well. “As a broker, I’m responsible for helping every licensee in my office build their business; there’s no way one broker can handle 800 agents.” Following in her mother’s footsteps, Edie’s love for education and training is tangible, and she has a passion for helping new agents build a rolodex of repeat clients, just like she has over the past 16 years. Edie describes herself as an adventurer, and that comes through in her enthusiastic nature. She’s a lover of culture, and has chosen to build her offices around diversity, with her 30 agents (and growing) all being from different countries. They represent Peru, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexi-

Plus, as a broker, she stays sharp by actually selling homes and working with clients regularly, which sets her apart from many brokers. Edie plans to expand her agency across the metroplex within the next few years, but these values will be a constant throughout every office, she said, with education and evolution being at the forefront. Edie is a poster child for what it means to overcome, to take risks, and to live a life outside one’s comfort zone. From an eight-year-old girl on a crowded fishing boat, sailing into the unknown, to a successful, liberated, joyful business owner, Edie has a new story: “You can do anything. You can be anything. SMU Cox School of Business Receives $6 Million Gift from Kim and Bill Shaddock

A $6 million gift from Kim and Bill Shaddock will help establish Shaddock Hall as part of SMU’s building renovation project for the Cox School of Business. The contribution will also foster educational excellence through learning, research, and collaboration spaces. The new Shaddock Hall will include flexible spaces with a business library reading room and expansive classrooms. The hall will also house the 20-seat dean’s boardroom overlooking the central hub of the Cox School and include offices for support services, including marketing, communications, and academic affairs. “It feels only right that I provide a tangible gift of appreciation for what SMU and Cox School of Business have done for me, my family, and the success of my business,” Bill Shaddock said. “I hope that this gift will help propel current and future students toward their own success and that they, too, will pay it forward.”
