Edwin Drewnicki, a technician at our Newport depot has some Tech Tips on spotting repairs on 30 Series tractors (page 12) or you could take advantage of our fixed price Roaring Thirty’s Servicing which includes a free expert check and let us make your tractor feel young again! As well as our range of premium and quality used machinery, you will find some great prices on new John Deere grassland machinery on page 8, these are a great purchase if you are looking to re-new your mower or round baler ready for this grass harvest. REVIEW OF THE NEW 6R LAUNCH EVENT AT SHREWSBURY In January we held a very well attended 6R launch event. A fabulous event was enjoyed by all and with excess of 500 attendees who came along to see the latest 6R tractors brought to the depot by John Deere exclusively for the event. Representatives from John Deere and RVT were on hand to answer any questions and explain the great new features of these light weight, high powered ‘Go Smart, Do More’ machines. There was also a large range of machinery on show, it was nice to see everyone for a catch up. The hog roast and refreshments were enjoyed by all and it was exciting to hold an event with such a great buzz and atmosphere. The Precision team demonstrated the updated precision technology including the ‘1 Click-Go Auto Setup’ and 2 NRoSO points were available with a tour of the John Deere trailed sprayer. Congratulations to Stephen Forbes the lucky winner of a John Deere tool set in the prize draw. We would like to thank everyone that attended the launch event for their valued support and we look forward to seeing the new 6R tractors rolling into the Shrewsbury depot this year.

Newport technician Edwin has carried out many expert checks. Having started his career at RVT as an apprentice 15 years ago his particular favourite is the 30 series. He has worked on these tractors since they where launched he has a keen eye for detail and knows exactly what to look for. In a few recent checks he has found badly worn pick up hitch slides which can result in poor hitch latching and particularly worn hooks. Seats also on this age of tractor can become worn there are a couple of alternatives repair kits for rollers and bearings, a replacement seat can be more cost effective in this case. Fault codes can have some simple repairs if you know what you are looking for. Tls and steering ball joints can also be replaced if found worn using Vapourmatic parts for a real cost-effective repair. Poor cab and front suspension can be an easy repair if the accumulators have gas replaced.

EXPERT CHECK SUCCESS! A C441R wrapper baler came into RVT Welshpool depot for an Expert Check. The technicians noticed the mounting of the main drive for the right hand side had three out of the four bolts missing. If he hadn’t had the expert check there’s a possibility that this could have been a very costly brake down at the beginning of the grass season!
PERFORMANCE EXPERT ALERTS Performance Expert Alerts have been introduced as new category of Expert Alerts. Until October 2020 the focus is on machine uptime was with Critical and High Expert Alerts. With Performance Expert Alerts as new category, machine connectivity and advanced data analytics are also leveraged to. ALL THINGS SLURRY ! MANURE SENSING Supported by the near-infrared sensor (NIR), John Deere Manure Sensing records all relevant manure nutrient levels such as nitrogen (N), ammonium-N (NH4), phosphate (P), potassium (K) and dry matter. Tests have shown that liquid manure has very strong fluctuations of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) and potassium (K) between different loads (and even within loads) with a variance factor of 4-6 for nitrogen, a factor of 10 for dry matter and a factor of 25 for phosphate. This makes continuous measurement so important. The ingredients are continuously measured during the application, more than 4000 times per second. That compensates for nutrient variations between different storage bins, differences between storage and transport as well as differences within individual tank. In addition, the ingredient content is measured permanently directly before the application, not just while filling the tanker.
Tests have shown that liquid manure has very strong fluctuations of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) and potassium (K) between different loads (and even within loads) John Deere Manure Sensing enables significant improvements in accuracy of information and application of nutrients in liquid manure compared to taking one or a limited number of samples per storage container or transport vehicle. The John Deere HarvestLab 3000™ sensor (NIR sensor) and the respective calibration are developed to deliver a higher accuracy level compared to other available systems on the market today. The NIR sensor with manure calibrations has been benchmarked against both commonly used analysis methods in laboratories (wet chemical) and NIRS lab analysis. The results indicate that the relative error (and standard deviation) is in the range of wet chemical laboratory tests.

10 STEPS TO BETTER MOWER CONDITIONER PERFORMANCE 1.
Replace oil in both the swivel hitch gearbox and the main gearbox at the slip clutch. This oil should be changed once a year and should be checked regularly during the silage season Following the drive shaft back to the slip clutch, watch out for wear in the knuckles of universal joints. Make sure your PTO covers and holding chains are in place. Set up the flotation springs correctly and grease the top links that are used to set cutting height. Most mower-conditioners use a triple V belt to drive the conditioner. If you find your mower gets blocked in heavy grass then the V-belt is slipping — either the belt needs to be tensioned or replaced. The cutterbar oil should be changed every season. Before draining oil, it’s a good idea to run the mower for a minute. This heats up the old oil and allows it to flow out of the drain hole faster. The mower should be jacked up on its left side to give a fall for the oil.

Underneath the cutterbar, check the skids regularly. The fastest way to damage your knives is to continue with skids broken or missing. 7. Check deflectors on top hats (large drums on either side of cutter bar) for wear. Replace as needed. 8. Knives should be replaced when damaged or after 500 acres, whichever comes first. Blunt knives can cause more fuel usage 9. Keep a close eye on the conditioner. Worn bushels will make conditioner spikes spin out of balance or even detach, causing heavy vibration. If you feel this happening, check conditioner for loose spikes. 10. Check the cutterbar drums for loose bearings. If badly worn these bearings can drop down into the cutterbar gearbox and do untold damage to the gear teeth. Again, heavy vibration is a tell-tale sign of a worn bearing.

MOWER MAINTENANCE TIPS 1.
Get your mower serviced regularly. Sharp blades cut the grass rather than shear. Levelling of the deck helps give a good level cut.
2.
Aim to reduce lawn height by one third. It’s a good idea to aim to reduce the lawn height by only one third each time you mow – any more would decrease the health and vigour of the grass.

Cut fortnightly early spring. The grass needs cutting less frequently in early spring as it is growing more slowly at this time of year. Cutting it fortnightly is fine until the weather warms up in late spring.

Get the grass height right. Most lawn grass is best kept at 2.5cm-4cm tall. In patches that get more wear and are heavily used, leave it a little longer, say 4cm-5cm. In shade, you could leave it still longer, at 7cm-8cm.

Cut weekly in late spring and summer. If you mow less frequently, you’ll break the ‘one third’ rule, as you’ll have to cut off more than one third of the grass’s height to keep it looking neat. You may need to mow twice weekly when growth rates peak in late spring.

Adjust cutting height. Adjust the cutting height to suit the weather and season. Raise the height of the blade a little at the start and end of the season. If it’s hot and dry, raise the blade to let the grass grow longer. The extra moisture held in the longer foliage helps keep the grass green and shades the soil.

WELCOME Welcome to the Precision Ag pages of the magazine, this time of year is always our busiest getting ready for the spring either installing new GPS equipment or servicing existing hardware. Supply of equipment is still an issue due to the shortage of semi-conductors, and Deere are forecasting this to be the same throughout 2022 just remember to keep removing equipment at night or when not in use in case of theft as we still have this is happening around our territory. We are seeing regular updates to MyJohnDeere, you will notice some nice changes to the Field Analyser and Work Planner which make it more intuitive and easier to navigate. Capturing as applied data is getting more common and with the increased use of wireless data transfer the ability to view this data instantly and make agronomic decisions is benefiting our customers. In terms of display updates, there was a small update released a few weeks ago which we have mentioned some highlights in these pages and there will be another update usually in March which we look forward to seeing new features released, don’t forget any tractor with JD Link can remotely have the display software updated. JD Link and machine operating data is gaining momentum in terms of analysing machine performance and utilisation we are working with Harper Adams University in this area which we can share more information on later in the year. Don’t forget for any technical support issues please ring our new support line on 07723 466995 this will increase our ability to manage and support you in the field especially during busy periods, interestingly the platform we use to enable this was bought by John Deere end of last year and integrates with there management programs. BETA RETIRES. THE UPDATED FIELD ANALYZER IS HERE With the new update Field Analyzer will have an updated look that blends the best parts of the previous Field Analyzer and Field Analyzer Beta. You will now find just Field Analyzer in the Analysis menu in Operations Centre web as Field Analyzer Beta has been retired. In addition, Field Analyzer is simplified in a few ways to streamline data analysis and create a common experience across the analysis tools. Simplified Field Analyzer now includes (fig.1.): 1.

FULLY AUTONOMOUS 8R During a press conference at CES 2022, John Deere revealed a fully autonomous tractor that’s ready for large-scale production. The machine combines Deere’s 8R tractor, TruSet-enabled chisel plow, GPS guidance system, and new advanced technologies. 1. Launch in North America A limited number of tractors will be delivered to North American customers this year. The launch of the brand in Europe is currently not planned, as safety regulations currently do not allow the use of autonomous vehicles. 2. Model and equipment The 8R410 looks very similar in appearance to a conventional tractor of the series but is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for controlling and monitoring the tractor and mounted excavator. • Six pairs of stereo cameras, which enables 360-degree obstacle detection and the calculation of distance. • Images captured by the cameras are passed through a deep neural network that classifies each pixel in approximately 100 milliseconds and determines if the machine continues to move or stops, depending on if an obstacle is detected. • Continuously checking its position relative to a geofence, ensuring it is operating where it is supposed to, and is within less than an inch of accuracy. 3. Use of the tractor Farmers only need to transport the machine to a field and configure
it for autonomous operation. Using John Deere Operations Centre Mobile, they can swipe from left to right to start the machine. While the machine is working the farmer can leave the field to focus on other tasks, while monitoring the machine’s status from their mobile device. John Deere Operations Centre Mobile provides access to: • live video • images • data and metrics and allows a farmer to adjust speed and working depth and more. In the event of any job quality anomalies or machine health issues, farmers will be notified remotely and can make adjustments to optimise the performance of the machine. 4. Device combination Currently, the technology for the 8R410 is available in combination with a special John Deere chisel plow. In the coming years, John Deere will work on the availability of the technology for further machines and attachments.

Jon Watson, Spunhill agronomist, brought in his Isuzu DL20 pickup for a first service at RVT Isuzu, Shrewsbury so we asked him what he likes about the New Isuzu D-Max.

ISUZU D-MAX PICK-UPS ‘LOVE 2 STAY’ AT TOURING AND GLAMPING RESORT In February the RVT Isuzu D-Max demonstration pick-ups visited Love2Stay, a touring and glamping resort with on a 22-acre site offering panoramic views across to Wales and the Shropshire Hills. They offer activities for all the family ranging from paddle-boarding and kayaking, bush-craft skills to an army style assault course and even a Bio-top natural swimming pool, forest school and a fishing lake.
