ORMR BRAND DESIGN, GRAPHICS, PACKAGING This was a competition entry for the O-I: Expressions Design Awards, partnered with Pentawards and PLD. The brief focussed around creating a brand and graphic design to showcase the unique potential of O-I: Expressions UV direct 3D print technology.

PROJECT AIMS This concept needed to showcase the unique capabilities of the direct 3D print technology over traditional labeling, so I outlined 3 ways to do this: - Tactile embossing element - 360 degree branding - Use of blank space
Early concepts - It was really interesting to work backwards and explore building the brand around the product.
BRANDING - INSPO A family link to Orkney and Shetland left me with a childhood filled with Norse mythology, One of the most famous legends is that of Jörmungandr, the ancient serpent that grew large enough to encircle the world. I took inspiration from this story to create the brand ‘ORMR’.

The design was adjusted in development to meet minimum embossing tolerance requirements for the scales. 44.7% VOL
ARTWORK AND GRAPHICS
Early concepts were explored with rough hand sketched mockups on a similar bottle. I wanted to understand how liquid in a full bottle would warp the back image.
Emboss
Pantone 179 C
Pantone Black 6 C
The use of a bold colour creates stronger brand recognition and adds to shelf presence.
GLASS SAMPLE Produced using OI Expressions. The scales are 3D printed with a clear UV cure, giving the snakeskin a tactile effect.
ESPA XMAS 22 PACKAGING DESIGN, SEASONAL GIFTING Briefed by THG to design and produce ESPA’s seasonal gifting range. This was a full end to end project, from initial conceptual design, through development to finished production.
INSPIRATION BOARDS Supporting exploration into colour and print finish in early conceptualisation stages.
TREND RESEARCH A consumer trend report supports research done in the early stages of design conceptualisation, focusing around home use of spa products and user behaviour.
EARLY CONCEPTUAL DESIGN - STRUCTURAL Initial sketchwork is very loose and rough to explore a wide range of different consumer/product interactions.
A multi - step reveal where the consumer takes 2 or more actions to reveal the product enhances the unboxing experience, building anticipation and leading the consumer on a journey.
MID-LATE STAGE CONCEPTUAL DESIGN Solidworks and Adobe Dimensions are used to visualise renders once a more defined design direction has been established. Technical drawings and product layouts are completed to support white sampling stages.
Production sample photography, showing multiple SKUs across the range. The different constructions are cohesive while still communicating different price points.
The advent is the star of a seasonal gifting range. Minimal graphics allow the emboss and foiling to tell the brand story.
BEAM ME UP
KEYWORDS
ARCHITECTURE, STRUCTURE DESIGN A warming hut is a structure built on a ski trail that provides shelter from the wind and cold. This brief was to design a hut for this purpose, to also act as a fun and interesting sculpture for families and tourists to interact with.
EARLY SKETCHWORK Initial design direction was inspired by storytelling. The design should allow children and adults to enter another world through play and interaction.
Otherworldly MYSTICAL Stories Wonder PLAYFUL
Inspired by the 767 UFO sightings reported over the past 200 years in Winnipeg, this playful design would delight both children and adults. Solar panels on the top of the craft power the green LEDs, giving the structure a glow at night, and sheets of steel reinforced PMMA offer wind shelter while giving the structure the impression of hovering, ready to abduct any visitors sheltering below.
A small step near the base of the central pillar allows visitors to pose as if they are floating up into the spacecraft, mid-abduction. This adds a great photograph opportunity and encourages social media sharing
The concept also has a ‘hidden’ surprise, a small unfortunate toy cow suspended in the central pillar, being abducted by the alien spacecraft. This tiny secret feature is only spotted up close, and rewards the curious with an unexpected surprise.
The top spacecraft section would be created using a steel skeleton, with lightweight tin panelling applied to form the body shape. Wiring for LEDs would be hidden inside, and 6 small solar panels would be placed on the upper face.
Solar panels on the top of the craft take advantage of the bright winter sun to power the LEDs. This surface is sloped to avoid snowfall covering these, and are placed all around the craft to benefit from maximum sunlight
White LEDs on the body of the spacecraft add to the extraterrestrial feel
Green LEDs run down the PMMA panelling. These are inset into the panelling, causing the plastic to seem like it is glowing. These panels are 30mm thick, offering visitors shelter from the wind
Central pillar bears most of the weight of the structure. This would be attached to a circular base, which would aid stability
The top dome shown here would be a transparent plastic. Potentially vacuum formed ABS or PET. Panelling options could be considered to save cost
A 3m circular base would ensure stability in windy conditions Beam me up
