CALF UNIT MONITERING SYSTEM

12 WEEK l INDIVIDUAL l ON-GOING PROJECT

A system which moniters the environmental conditions and air quality within calf rearing units on dairy farms, so that rates of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) within the heifer population can be reduced.

Bovine Respoiratory Disease Complex (BRD) is commonly known as calf pneumonia.

It causes breathing problems, weight loss and, in some cases, death. Treatment of BRD and associated loss of assets represent a large percentage cost on calf units. Even mild or unrecognised cases of the disease can cause underlying damage by limiting growth rates and reducing herd profitability.

Rates of Respiratory Disease can be significantly reduced if conditions in calf rearing sheds are carefully monitered and kept optimal. Poor ventilation is the most common cause of pneumonia among calves. Air flow must be kept sufficient to prevent stale air, but without exposing calves to draughts. Other risk factors include humidity, low or rapidly fluctuating temperatures, damp bedding and stress.

Bovine Respiratory Disease is a very common problem in young dairy-bred beef and dairy heifer replacement calves: its severe economic effects make effective countermeasures a high priority to maintain herd profitability, especially as not just sick animals contribute to the cost of the disease “
CONTEXT

I am designing a product which monitors the temperature, humidity, and air circulation within areas where calves are housed. Should values move outside of an optimal range, the system notifies farm workers via SMS, suggesting that the ventilation should be adjusted.

PROMOTIONAL WIDGET

An injection moulded widget to promote the brand Twitter. This project included design and manufacture of the mould tool.

Within the team I was responsible for all CAD and CNC machining. This included engineering drawings, plastic flow simulations, and coded part programs for each component.

During developement of the widget design, 3D printing was used for rapid, high fidelity prototyping. When it came to machining, most components were fully or partially machined using a 2.5 axis cnc milling machine. Where there were limitations with this, inserts were hand finished in the workshop. Before machining, I ran each tool path simulation on Solidworks to check it. For some of the more complicated parts I also ran the program with foam first, at different feedrates, to check the code before using aluminium.

PORTABLE FONDUE SET

12 WEEK l INDIVIDUAL l ON-GOING PROJECT

A portable fondue set for couples. Branded as a Smart product, like the cars, it is compact, playful, and most of all, fun.

BRAND RESEARCH

TEST DRIVE

As part of my research into the brand, it was important to experience using Smart products first-hand. I went to the Leicester dealership to test drive a Smart Fortwo, which was a very valuable experience. Through talking to brand representatives, I was able to gain a better understanding of the values and priorities of the company, and how these might apply to my context. The experience of driving and interacting with the car gave an invaluable insight into the intangiable aspects of the user experience, and how Smart design this into their existing products.

PERSONA

Kirsten and John are young professionals living together in Liverpool. They both grew up in cities and have been married for 1 year. They both have fairly high paying jobs, and without kids, have a large amount of disposable income. They have friends in the city, but they like to spend romantic weekends away from the city when they have chance. They are both eco-concious and try to minimise their impact on the environment.

SILVERSMITHING

PERSONAL PROJECT l INDIVIDUAL l CRAFTSMANSHIP

I have been practicing silversmithing for 6 months and have recently started taking commissions for work.

In the first meeting/correspondence with a client, we discuss what they want from their piece and I sketch up a few concept designs. From these, over the following meetings, these are refined into a final design which I take to workshop.

This piece took 4 weeks from the first meeting with the client until completion. The client here wanted a simple, elegant ring for everyday wear, with a pearl setting. She also specified a balance between a traditonal and more modern style.
