Your friends are more important than you think, you may wonder how to get the right friend. How to know if they are bad for you. Maybe you think you have the best friend group ever. WELCOME

Mr. Booker by Aaliyah Hill

Our amazing, new Principal Mr. Booker came to school March 18, 2019. He has been doing such a great job, this last month as the new principal. He is trying his best to get to know the students and his best in trying to know all the expectations that he needs for this school. It may take him a little while to understand all the things that he needs to know. He will be great for the new incoming 6th-graders.

Leading the school may be tough but it will be easy after you get used to it. There are a lot of rules that the principal needs to know to help the students in this school because being a principle of of over 1,000 students can be very stressful. The students can be very hardheaded and probably won’t listen to any adult at all but, you're just going to have to deal with it. Sometimes the students won’t care who their talking to at all. Kids may be hard to handle, but once you get used to them you would start getting used to their behavior and maybe you can even change it. Elementary school can be way easier to be the principal, but as soon as you’re the principal for a middle school or high school all the kids aren’t nice like they used to be.

When I first met Mr. Booker, I didn’t know that he was going to be our new principal. He looked like to me just a regular man just walking through our school. Mr. Booker is becoming a great principal with only the short time that he has been here. He is looking forward to getting to better know his students of all grades. Every student should try to make a good first impression for the new principal. Mr. Booker is sure to be the next best principal at this school that we ever had. Page 6

That's Life Q & A Feelin' blue about your bestie? Maybe we can help.

Q: Lately, my friend has not been treating me right. She’s always sarcastic, rude, and doesn’t listen to what would be considered as good advice. What can I do?

A: Maybe it’s best for you two grow apart. This relationship isn’t healthy and could lead to some trouble in the future. Distance yourself, she’s not the right friend for you.

Eighth grader, Roderick Chambers known as RaRaa3x creates new beats. You may not know this, but we have an accomplished rap artist here at Willkie. Rodderick Chambers (8th-grade) is known to his audience as RaRaa3x. He made his first song back in 2013, but his recent success came with the debut of "Spare None" by Blockboy Yungin featuring Diamond and RaRaa3x. It has reached YouTube success with over 43k views.

"My advice to other artists is to always believe in yourself and to never give up," said Roderick. Roderick finds his inspiration from his life and writes about things that have happened to him in the past because it's more personal. His favorite classes are ones where he can use electronics because he likes researching new things happening in the music industry. Roderick says he plans on dropping new beats this summer.

STANDOUTS

Seventh grader, Rylea Prince braves the stage for a chance to shine. This past November, 7th-grader, Rylea Prince and her mom met with a talent scout from Industry Network. After three rounds of auditions of acting and singing, Rylea was chosen to perform in a regional showcase in Dallas this past January. Again, she auditioned with a monologue, a commercial script, and two songs. After three intense weekends of training and performing, Rylea was chosen to move on yet again to a National Showcase in Los Angeles this summer.

"Being signed with a agent would be my ultimate dream come true," says Rylea Prince. The showcase in Los Angeles, California will take place over five days in June, where budding actors like Rylea will have chance to meet over 100 top talent agents in the industry. Industry Network is a talent scouting company who searches for stand-out talent and prepares them to perform in front of agents, managers, and casting directors.

Seventh grader, Rylea Prince reaches for the stars in her Los Angeles acting debut.

"I'm so excited that Rylea has this opportunity. She is so talented. I know there are big things in store for her in the future," said Mrs. Asher, Rylea's 7thperiod Theatre teacher.

Sixth grader, Elliot Seutter crunches the numbers for the future. Elliot Seutter is one smart kid. He's been crunching numbers and watching the stock market for a couple years now. He follows Tesla stock intensely and believes Tesla will have a major impact on how people will drive in the future, as well as have future opportunities for travel in space. "Elliot is an amazing and humble student," said Mrs. Bonnick who is his GT Humanities teacher, "He goes out of his way to help other students, and truly shows what it means to work the Willkie Way." When he's not thinking about the future, Elliot is in Band and manages his busy schedule with all PAP classes. Sixth grader, Elliott Seutter tracks the future through the stock market.

One of the action-packed sports offered at Willkie is our boys and girls soccer class, It's near the end of the school year and going to the tryouts are so worth it. Seventh and eighth graders can try out for soccer March or they can join the soccer class. It gives the athlete's, a chance to make a team and work together in games that we will go to. In soccer we are given a workout plan by going to the weight room on Tuesdays and Thursdays to work out.

Page 11

It also gives us a chance to experience what a real hard-working soccer team is like, and students can see how tough a real athlete has to work to make it to the top. Our coaches ( Coach Klitgaard and Coach Matthews) are friendly and helpful. During the soccer tryouts athletes are tested on our speed, accuracy, teamwork and endurance. We are watched by our coaches and varsity coaches from different high schools to judge whether we are a fit for either the A or B teams.

Soccer helps kids stay fit and healthy. Playing soccer is great exercise that improves the following: * Cardiovascular health * Increases coordination * Improves strength * Enhances flexibility * Boosts self-confidence and self-esteem. Players also need to be good at: * Dribbling * Passing * Shielding * Trapping * Tackling * Shooting * Goal-keeping Practice these contact movements, ideally with a teammate, to fully develop the skills you need to play soccer. At tryouts, coaches also look for positive attitude and dedication.
