12 undergraduate architecture students developped, fabricated, and assembled an architectural installation for TRex, a startup technology business incubator in downtown St. Louis. The installation explores how architecture affects human senses, as well as the effects generated by the architectural entity. Students researched ways to alter vision using reflection and use light as an environmental variable to generate the form of the installation.
SNAP FIT JOINT
I designed this snap fit joint to hold together the entire system
FROM RENDER TO CAST
cast japanese wooden joinery in glass
Kawai Tsugite Joint
Winter 2016 Class taught at Pioneer Works and UrbanGlass in Brooklyn taught by Matthew Day Perez
Shihou Ari Tsugi Joint
I took a class where we learned to go from 3D design to 3D print to rubber to wax to plaster silica to glass cast. As a woodworker, I am constantly inspired by Japanese joinery. I decided to cast the Kawai Tsugite Joint and the Shihou Ari Tsugi Joint.
mantis
a design build bicycle studio
Spring 2013 A cycle inspired by the movements of an insect Professor: Lindsey Stouffer
The goal of this studio was to design and build a cycle inspired by the movements of an insect. I worked in a team with two other students, Cristina Clow and Kim Gagnon, where our original inspiration was from studies of centipedes. Through our multiple iterations, we let go of our original studies of the centipede, and ended up with Mantis, a 7 foot-tall upright reverserecumbent tricycle with working brakes.
MANGA FARMING
an experimental terrarium
Spring 2013 Intro to Design Processes IV Professor: Elisa Kim
I was assigned to design a terrarium. As I was researching alternative growth methods, I was inspired by Japanese artist Koshi Kawachi to attempt to grow radishes in manga comics. I was intrigued by this process because it is an innovative way to plant while recycling and reusing old books.
STØL
a plywood shell chair
ORIGINAL
Fall 2014 Furniture Design in Denmark Professors: Natalie Jeffers and Lars Hansen.
CONCEPT
SIMPLIFIED
FINAL
I took Furniture Design while studying abroad in Copenhagen. Our studio studied the master’s of Scandinavian furniture design, including Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Alvaro Aalto, and Jørn Utzon, among many others. We were each given a blank shell and a metal base. I asked myself, How much of the plywood shell can I strip away with it still being a chair? Still comfortable, durable, and ergonomic? I was inspired by birds nests, street grids, stained glass, and spiderwebs.
NAFIS BOOKCASE
rotating hidden sliding door
Spring 2016 Design, dressing, and finishing work by me. Fabrication by Bien Hecho. Photos from Nafis Jamal.
Here is a bookcase I designed for a client at Bien Hecho who wanted to hide a closet when he AirBnBs his apartment, while still having access to it while he is home. It slides out, rotates, and closes back together.
FABRICATION
street seats & rooftop furniture
Spring and Summer 2016 Designed by Studio FANTĂ STICA, fabricated by my coworkers and I at Bien Hecho,
FABRICATION metalwork
Summer 2016 Partitions designed by Rockwell Group, shop drawings and fabrication by my coworkers and I at Total Metal Resource,
