Message from The Executive Director

Greetings from the Park City Jazz Foundation On behalf of the staff, board and sponsors, I would like to welcome you all to the 12th annual Park City Jazz Festival presented by Mark Miller Subaru. Over the years, thousands of people have graced the hills of the Deer Valley Resort Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater to enjoy classic performances ranging from classic artists such as Ray Charles and George Benson to newer faces such as Chris Botti and India.Arie. It is impossible for me to judge the greatest performance of all. More important, is the mercurial magic that is conjured up between artist, audience, venue and sound that sets the overall Festival experience apart from any single performance. Each element, as vital as the next, and in whose absence the lingering magic that lives in the memories of those who were there would never exist. This Festival will conclude my tenure as Executive Director of the Park City Jazz Foundation. For the last 5 years, we have developed this event into one of the leading Festivals in the nation elevating the level of production, expanding the selection of world class artists and enhancing the overall experience for our patrons. We have educated numerous students, grown our audience and impacted more lives with the power of music. This journey has not been taken alone. It is through the efforts of the many board members, volunteers, staff, and supports that we have gotten to this place atop the mountain. Many of you have been special mentors, brothers in arms, guiding lights in dark days, and glorious revelers in moments of victory. It is to you that I tip my hat and I thank you for the experience. We are all a part of this celebration. I encourage you all to continue the march, support the music, and entice you to make magic of your own at this 2009 Park City Jazz Festival. Sincerely,

Brian Bromberg

www.brianbromberg.net Friday, August 21, 6:15 p.m. The Jazz Jokerz, mentored by dynamic saxophonist and producer/composer David Halliday, have taken the Park City music scene by storm. Combining a professional attitude along with their youthful energy, they have performed at numerous private receptions and parties during the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, including the inauguration party for President Barack Obama held at the Sundance Music Café. The Jazz Jokerz have also performed at the ACLU of Utah’s annual convention and at the Park Silly Sunday Market. They will be competing in the upcoming Battle of the Bands hosted by the Kimball Arts Center.

Sean O’Bryan Smith

www.myspace.com/seanobryansmith Friday, August 21, 5:00 p.m. With nearly twenty years of experience in virtually every musical genre, Sean O’Bryan Smith has become one of the most celebrated and highly sought after bass players in the music industry. In 2006, Sean set forth on recording his first solo CD “Tapestry”. With the fulfillment of a number of his musical dreams, Sean now embraced the

12 PCJF

role as artist with the recording of a fresh new instrumental bass record and a return to his roots in jazz. In addition to his role as artist, Sean is continuing a heavy career as a session and touring bassist, clinician, producer, and freelance writer.

Brian began his solo career with the release of his first album “A New Day” in 1986. Right from the beginning with this first release, critics started noticing that Brian was different, Bromberg’s reputation was starting to spread throughout the world. In February 1998, Brian released his most successful album to date, “You Know That Feeling”. Brian’s CD was the 5th most played CD from the top 100 CD’s of the year in smooth jazz. All in all, Brian has produced 7 top 5 hits and 2 #1 hits to date. Brian smashed through the barriers of how the bass is supposed to be played, to being recognized as a world-class producer and songwriter. As Brian himself says, “There are no rules, just dreams”.

Friday, August 21, 2009 Crescent Super Band

www.crescentsuperband.com Friday, August 21, 6:15 p .m .

Twenty-two teenagers from Utah can make a lot of noise - especially when they happen to be members of the Crescent Super Band . Directed by Caleb Chapman and sponsored by the Park City Jazz Foundation, the band has stunned audiences worldwide . With a youthful energy and nearly unbelievable performance level, the band has performed hip, intelligent arrangements of the American standards for thousands . As a result, they have frequently been hailed as the top band of their type in the world . In 8 short years the band has already been featured at many of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals including North Sea (the Netherlands), Montreux (Switzerland), Umbria (Italy), Vienne (France), and Tuscany (Italy) . The band also has a strong national presence with recent performances in Chicago, Boston, New York, and Telluride . In 2007, DownBeat Magazine recognized the Crescent Super Band as the top young jazz band in the country . The band has also won four “Best of State” awards for Utah and the prestigious BOSS Award identifying the band as the top organization in Arts and Entertainment in Utah, beating out every other professional music group for the honor . They’ve caught the attention of many of today’s top artists as well . Since its inception the band has performed with

well over a hundred guest artists, including GRAMMY-winners Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Dave Samuels, Nicholas Payton, Bob Mintzer, Brian Lynch, and Ernie Watts, to name a few . The band has released four full-length albums on the Big Swing Face Record Label, including their latest release, “Wobble”, featuring Dave Matthews Band saxophonist and multi-GRAMMY winner, Jeff Coffin .

Esperanza Spalding

www.esperanzaspalding.com Friday, August 21, 8:00 p .m .

If “esperanza” is the Spanish word for hope, then bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding could not have been given a more fitting name at birth . Blessed with uncanny instrumental chops, a multi-lingual voice that is part angel and part siren, and a natural beauty that borders on the hypnotic, the 23-year-old prodigy-turned-pro might well be the hope for the future of jazz and instrumental music . The newest chapter of Spalding’s journey began with the release of her international debut recording for Heads Up, which was released in May 2008 . The album was the first opportunity for a worldwide audience to witness her mesmerizing talents as an instrumentalist, vocalist and composer, but it’s just the start of what she hopes to achieve in a career where the creative opportunities are almost limitless .

John Flanders has been one of the most in demand saxophone/woodwind player in Salt Lake City and the Intermountain West for over a decade. In addition to being a renowned bandleader and session player, John’s recordings have received critical and popular acclaim, leading to a growing reputation as a composer and arranger. John has won numerous prestigious City Weekly Best of Utah awards as an instrumentalist as well as with his classic jazz groups. He has performed the National Anthem solo at NBA games, performed with the Utah Symphony, and toured Italy,

Since 1994 when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with From This Moment, the trumpeter has been lauded as a significant, top-tier voice in jazz. While his jazz journey has taken him down many roads the 34-year-old trumpeter arrives at a new plateau of jazz maturity with Into the Blue. Into the Blue is a collection of ten tunes steeped in melody and groove that Payton says “embodies the sensibilities of beauty, elegance and simplicity” and delivers “danceable tempos.” He adds, “The true staples of jazz for me—the hallmarks of the music throughout its history—are love songs and the element of dance.” Each year the Park City Jazz Foundation holds auditions to identify Utah’s top high school jazz musicians. Those students selected receive a scholarship and the chance to perform on the main stage of the Park City Jazz Festival. Many in this year’s group have already performed internationally and represent not only Utah’s finest musical talent, but also Utah’s best youth. At the festival the combo will be performing with GRAMMY-winner, Nicholas Payton. The group is directed by the Park City Jazz Foundation’s Education Director, Caleb Chapman. Previous All-Star Combos have performed with jazz greats such as Christian McBride, Russell Gunn, and Jeff Coffin.

More than anything else, Poncho Sanchez is a storyteller. And, as leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world today, it’s his congas and seasoned ensemble that do the talking. Today, Sanchez’s life’s story has become a well-known part of Latin jazz lore. He was born in Texas on October 30, 1951 into a large Mexican-American family (rumor

has it that his 13-year old mother fled to the U.S. after hiding under the bed as revolutionary Pancho Villa stormed her village), but grew up in the Los Angeles area, where he was weaned on a broad range of Latin and non-Latin popular music. Inspired by the conga playing of Cuban great Mongo Santamaria, he honed his skills as a percussionist and broke into the limelight at the age of 23 when he joined vibraphonist Cal Tjader’s famed Latin jazz ensemble in 1975. Poncho performed with him until Tjader’s untimely death in 1982. A year later, he began his unprecedented 23-year relationship with Concord Records, which has produced two dozen recordings, a GRAMMY® Award and several GRAMMY nominations.

The best jazz musicians establish an ongoing dialogue with each other on stage, discovering unique ways to express a melodic idea. At Rastar, we believe delivering effective marketing communications to your customers works the same way—provide them unique ways to receive the information they need about your product or service.

HIT ALL THE RIGHT NOTES. Rastar celebrates the musicians and artists of the Park City Jazz Festival. We identify with those who venture out and brave the unknown. Because once you go beyond the discovered, the real adventure begins.
