Thank you!
Welcome to the Festival! Welcome to the 17th Annual Vermont Festival of the Arts! Our lives are enriched by the contribution of artists and the arts in the Mad River Valley. Each day in August is filled with art, music, theater, dining and play, whether it be in cafés or galleries, on village sidewalks or back roads, in garages or pavilions, on mountainsides or in barns. Again this year the Festival has an extraordinary range of activities for everyone from children to seniors. Favorite events from past years are returning, and we are excited about the many new and redesigned events that are joining the Festival. Our headline event, The Taste of the Valley, has new features and a new day and date. This year, The Taste moves to Sunday, August 10 (from the traditional Monday night) and includes demonstrations and artists painting “plein air”. (See page 41 for ticket information.) Mark your calendars now! We listened to your requests and have expanded our activities for children and families. Check out the Workshops for Kids (pages 20-21) and Family Fun Activities events (pages 46-48), especially the Children’s Painting Tent at the Great Vermont “Plein Air” Paint-Out and the Crafty Kids workshops. The Festival Picnic at Lareau Farm on August 3 (page 47) opens the Festival with live music and fireworks! You will find more than 100 fun-filled and enlightening events described in this Program. Look at the listings, check your calendar and plan your days of artistic adventures from August 1 through Labor Day. If you have any questions, please call us at the Festival Gallery, 802-496-6682, or visit our website, www.vermontartfest.com. We are grateful for the support of our corporate partners, sponsors, advertisers, members and volunteers. Whether through a financial donation, a gift of time, or a sharing of talent, the Vermont Festival of the Arts is made possible by hundreds of people celebrating the Arts in our community. Have fun! 2014 Festival of the Arts Commemorative Poster
Featuring artwork by Marilyn Ruseckas
Though pastel usually describes something soft and pale, Marilyn prefers to push her palette toward rich and bold. Working out unique color combinations is what keeps her inspired. By using the concepts of realism, freedom of gesture and discovery of color, each piece becomes an illusion that the viewer can relate to as a place that might exist in a surreal world. The Vermont Festival of the Arts is delighted that Marilyn created a work just for us that evokes the vibrancy of our unique Mad River Valley landscape. Signed posters, $25. Proceeds benefit the Valley Arts Foundation. Marilyn Ruseckas

The Vermont Festival of the Arts asked Lareau Farm owner George Schenk what it means to him to have art in the Valley.
Art is important. Though we live in a time profoundly influenced by science, technology and the comforts of materialism, art, like religion and philosophy, remains fundamental to the human experience and helps make real our highest consciousness. Art, Hegel said, “is an activity of the soul”, and “it is in the works of art that nations have deposited their richest ideas”. Art is the purposeful act of creativity. It is sometimes joyful and beautiful and, at other times, difficult and disturbing; but always, real art is infectious - it engages us and moves our emotions. Art breaks down barriers and helps us understand the worth and wisdom of others. Food is the primary art of Lareau Farm. It is an art of place and purpose; it reaches, like other arts, to have meaning and to act as a bridge between the internal world of our ideas and the external world of our senses. All art, Wittgenstein believed, is influenced by the unique place and time of the artist. The formal arts, like food, have “terroir”: They are influenced by their environment. Goya’s “The Third of May, 1808” and Picasso’s “Guernica” are art in reaction to topical events. You will see that here in the images of Vermont and its people and in the artists’ hopes and dreams for this place they call home.
Festival Picnic Sunday, August 3 5–10 pm Lareau Farm Inn Waitsfield, Vermont
Art is intrinsically bilateral: its making is usually private and often intensely personal, but to be completed it must be viewed or in some other way experienced. And that is the symbiosis here: The art in the Big Red Barn broadens and enriches the Lareau Farm experience, and the guests of the farm help complete the artists’ work. George Schenk Lareau Farm, home of American Flatbread, is a sponsor of the Vermont Festival of the Arts.

Leonard Nimoy’s Vincent is an intimate one-man play adapted from the actual letters between Vincent van Gogh and his brother, Theo. Vincent’s story is so much more than that of the troubled artist who cut off his own ear; it is a story of great passion and love. This play is not simply a biographical work, but one filled with drama, conflict, humor and beauty. It also includes over 100 stunning projections of Vincent’s artwork. Originally performed by Leonard Nimoy himself, this production is presented by Starry Night Theater Company and performed by professional actor James Briggs.
