Welcome to the Festival! Welcome to the 18th Annual Vermont Festival of the Arts! The Festival is a monthlong celebration of the Mad River Valley creative community, hosted by local artists and artisans, innkeepers and chefs, musicians, singers and thespians, small business owners and professionals, as well as fitness and outdoor enthusiasts – all those who call this place “home.” Think of the Festival as a giant “open house”: With over 100 events, you will find something to love here in the Valley. We invite you to our party! All of your favorite events have returned, including the Great Vermont Plein Air Paint-Out, the Big Red Barn Art Show, and the Photo Show in the Round Barn. Last year, we added the Iron Chef to the Taste of the Valley, our premier event at Sugarbush Resort. Will Adam Longworth of the Common Man successfully defend his title? Music offerings have expanded, with a concert & dance to benefit WMRW radio, an opera concert hosted by the Valley Opera Lovers, plus the Vermont Music Fest is back under new directors. Kids of all ages will have no reason to say they’re bored. Ever. With abundant craft activities, watercolor painting at the Paint-Out, the return of StoryWalk®, Clay Play, pizza making at the Warren Store, special screenings at the Big Picture, plus family events like the Festival Frolic at Lareau Farm and the Barns & Bridges Tour, they will stay busy. Art is everywhere in the Mad River Valley, and we hope you will plan to spend a few days here to enjoy it. In Memoriam, James Plumpton 1936-2015

In Praise of James Plumpton… James (never Jim) was tireless in pursuit of excellence. It was obvious that he loved the Valley and wanted to bring out the best we had to offer. Economic strength, he felt, was the foundation of a vibrant community. Enhancing tourism offerings by creating events that would bring people here for extended stays was James’ plan. He felt that by involving the multi-talented Valley residents in a series of summer events, visitors would be enticed to come and stay. The first event was to be a collaborative effort among seven local community groups under the direction of a newly developed Mad River Valley Arts Committee. The Vermont Festival of the Arts was born from that effort, with the first Festival held from Friday, August 8th to Sunday, August 23, 1998. It featured art exhibitions, music, theater, workshops and more. James’ creativity, tenaciousness and business sense made a huge difference in the promotion of the arts in the Valley. He would be pleased to see how his efforts, so long ago, have blossomed into the phenomenon that the Festival has become - kudos, James! ~ Dotty Kyle

Joan E. Lane is an accomplished painter and print maker who divides her time between New York City and the Mad River Valley. Her piece Lone Heron is featured on our collectible poster this year. In describing her work, she writes: I try to work in synchrony with the natural world around us and attempt to capture the harmony that I see in nature. By using water based mediums, I hope to distill these feelings into my art work.

Signed posters, $25 (includes tax). Proceeds benefit the Valley Arts Foundation. Posters are available at The Festival Gallery, the Festival booth at the Waitsfield Farmers’ Market, the Big Red Barn Art Show at Lareau Farm, and at select Festival events.

How Art Builds Community Art builds community by transcending the barriers that often separate us. It dissolves the divisions that few other things can—culture, language, age, socio-economics, profession, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual identity and educational level. Art bonds a community by bringing people together in a shared experience. It provides a cultural connection for otherwise unconnected community members. The community gains a sense of place through art, bringing people to the community and its many venues. Artists express themselves and communicate who they are. It gives community members a sense of belonging and shared values. Art depicts a community’s identity and spirit. Forging bonds when people participate in creating or enjoying art allows those who don’t feel as if they “belong” or are “different” to feel like a welcomed part of their community. Artists and the arts stimulate our imagination, animate our lives, and provide a richer quality of life for all. The arts within our community create joy as well as a give us a context for the emotions that impact our lives. The creation of art, or the experience of others’ art, helps people process emotions such as grief, confusion, anger, isolation and fear. The arts also stimulate the economy. It can transform vacant spaces, bring residents and visitors to businesses displaying art and give artists income opportunities to reinvest in the community. As a policy maker, art connects me to my community as a whole. It diverts me from my world of “for and against” and “winners and losers”. Art is a neutralizer.
