Art is the thread that weaves together our open, friendly Mad River Valley community of farmers, pedal pushers, craftsmen, artists, chefs, professionals, families, outdoor enthusiasts, and the wellness providers that keep us moving. We at Valley Arts believe art is more than the making. Art needs a shared experience - an audience - to become Art with a capital "A." Thus, we hope that you will take turns being creators and audience as you participate in the many imaginative events offered in this Program. We've expanded the time frame covered by the Festival Program as Valley Arts has expanded its programming beyond the month of August. Our creative community thrives year-round. We hope you will explore the many stimulating events and activities in the Mad River Valley all twelve months of the year.
Thank you to everyone in the community who has organized and planned an event for the Festival. This Festival does not exist without your energy and creative spirit! Special thanks to Linda Barnes, our awesome office volunteer. Thank you to all of our volunteers - none of Valley Arts' work is possible without you!

The Art of Jeremy Lee MacKenzie
Everyone wants to experience life on their own terms. The artwork of Jeremy MacKenzie is a reflection of just that - even when time in prison gets in the way. While serving a total of eight years for bank robbery and drug trafficking, Jeremy drew the "blueprints" for the intricate carvings he planned to create upon his release. These drawings, comprised of many sheets of paper taped together, had to be kept secret or they would have been confiscated. He successfully kept the drawings hidden for years, until he brought them home and meticulously cut them in mahogany. Every piece is designed like a maze, cut so that all parts are interconnected. For Jeremy, "[T]his was important to me... all of life is a giant maze disguised in the image of other things, people, doors, paths, journeys, and choices." Jeremy is now an award-winning filmmaker and a full-time creative media major at Champlain College. Jeremy will speak about his work on Saturday, August 6th, followed by the Opening Reception. "Win's Word" Welcome to August in the Mad River Valley After coming to the Mad River Valley during college and skiing Mad River Glen, I returned fifteen years later for a reunion with college buddies and our young families. We stopped at The Warren Store and I was pleasantly surprised at how little had changed. The bucolic valley was still here. We had a terrific weekend and skiing became my family’s passion. After a hectic week on Wall Street, I could feel my blood pressure falling once we hit Roxbury Gap. I knew the Valley mostly as a place to ski in winter and now I love being here all year. Arguably we have the best skiing and riding in the East and our terrain variety is unmatched. But there is so much more.

Two historic towns maintain their unique characters. Architects who settled here in the 60’s created an eclectic style. Farms define our landscape and provide delicious food all year. We have a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., famous swimming holes and hiking trails, epic mountain and road biking. There are fine equestrians and some of the country’s best soaring. There are great places to eat, too. Chez Henri has been here over fifty years for good reason. At American Flatbread, kids can play outside before dinner. Hogan’s Pub offers unforgettable views. Just a few of my favorites.

To benefit Valley Arts Sunday, August 7, 5 pm
Tasting 5-7 pm or a little later, whenever the food runs out Silent Auction closes at 7:15 pm Revised for this year with new vendors (and your favorites from previous years), more entertainment, and even a putting contest, the Taste promises to be better than ever! This year's event is designed to include more of what makes the Mad River Valley so sweet, with tastes scheduled from food vendors, farmers, and more. Formerly known as "Taste of the Valley," a committee of dedicated volunteers began working on organizing this event in January, and the sheer scope of their efforts called for a name tweak to "Taste the Valley Experience." A fantastic evening of tasty bites and wonderful entertainment awaits at this event to benefit Valley Arts. Vendors offering scrumptious samples will be located on the beautiful courtyard at Lincoln Peak and upstairs in the spacious Gate House Lodge. Also upstairs in the Gate House Lodge is the exquisite Silent Auction, featuring many one-of-a-kind offerings. Perfect summer cocktails, wine, and beer are available from Timbers Restaurant and the Castlerock Pub. Music in the courtyard performed by The Big Basin Band. The Taste is generously sponsored by Sugarbush Resort. summer performances 55 The Pirates of Penzance at The Skinner Barn July 21–24 and July 27–31
The Pirates of Penzance or, The Slave of Duty, is a musical comedy in two acts with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday and that he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully! Great music and a hilarious script make this classic show a perennial family favorite!
