Brief Part A Figure Ground - Letter-form Abstraction
Part B Figure Ground - Contrasting and Composing Contrast and Composing
This assignment is designed to demonstrate your ability to recognize and create effective figure ground design solutions.
Design Problem 2
1. Using the file supplied, create six compositions using a single letter-form in black only. Examine the forms and counterforms of the letter.
1. Select a contrasting pair of letterforms, for example serif (Garammond) and sans serif (Helvetica). try to choose letters that vary in their weight, geometry, and complexity.
2. Isolate just enough of each letter to hint at its identity. Strike a balance between positive and negative space (ambiguity).
2. Using the file supplied, combine the letterforms in dynamic compositions. Home in on letterform details to illuminate the unique anatomical and stylistic features of each. Use figure/ground relationships to contrast forms against each other as well as merge them together. Crop, combine, repeat, rotate, enlarge, and reduce the letterforms to create both separation and ambiguity.
3. Mount your example(s) to a high standard on A3 size paper and place these in your portfolio Examples and further details can be found at the source: http://gdbasics.com/index.php?s=figuregrounddp1 Please Note: That although this assignment has been taken and adapted from this excellent source it is somewhat traditional in nature: that is it is introduced in all great design schools.
3. Choose six final designs that celebrate formal differences as well as distribute positive and negative space into fluid, balanced compositions. 4. Mount your example(s) to a high standard on A3 size paper and place these in your portfolio, place a copy in your digital journal for assessment. Please Note: That although this assignment has been taken and adapted from this excellent source it is somewhat traditional in nature: it is introduced in all great design schools.
Gestalt
There are six principle theories.
There are different variations depending on the source: Figure Ground 02 Similarity Similarity Proximity Anomaly Closure Symmetry
Gestalt psychology is based on observations that w experience that are not part of our simple sensations. It was originally observed by Wertheimer’s when he said we percieve motion where there is nothing more than a rapid sequence of sensory events.
The first group of psychologists to study perceptual organisation around the 1920’s, in Germany was, Johann Wolfgang, von Goethe, Ernst Mach, Christian von Ehrenfels, Max Wertheimer Wolfgang Köhler, Kurt Koffka and Kurt Lewin. Gestalt means when parts individually have different characteristics to the whole (Gestalt means “organised whole”) example, describing a flower its part leaves part petals but when you look the overall flower, you are aware of the overall object the flower. (Boeree, 2000)
Thousands of logos are being created in this technique. Trademarks and famous companies love gestalt theory.

Letterform Abstraction
(North, 2012)
Practice gure ground compositions by scaling letterforms within a format. Look for designs that make use of scales letters that suggest their true origins.
My favouriate image is the tree with the animals, it took me a while to notice them I just saw a tree with shapes around it. Now I cant unsee them images It really is amazing how its been done. Its so interesting to see how they thought to make the animals as part of the tree and background.
Figure Ground
The concept of figure-ground perception emerged out of the field of Gestalt psychology. According to the Gestalt approach, the whole is more (or different) than the sum of its parts. The term Gestalt itself comes from the German word meaning “form” or “shape.”
I like the image that looks like Hnd strangling someone, you can see the face shape and the hand but you dont just see one of them they are both clear to see. I love how the image is part of the background.

The Law of Similarity states that similar objects are perceived as being grouped together. The picture on the left displays a group of squares and circles. It is easy to group the similar shapes together, seeing the squares forming a cross while the circles are grouped together outside of it (Goldstein 105).
Similarity Similarity occurs when objects look similar to each other. The principle of similarity states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color and texture. There are different ways to show similarity. such as dots that are the same colour on one line and a no colour on the other which makes you see them as a horizontal line but there as a whole.
I like the image that looks like circles and a square, I think it is really interesting how its created to make it look like a square without all the circles touching each other. People see it as a square becasue of the shapes created in each circle, it lines up to create a box shape.
The shapes don’t touch each other which makes you believe you can see the a shape and you fill in the missing pieces without them being there. I love these pieces because it makes you see things that arent really there but your brain is filling them in.
Closure Closure occurs when an object is incomplete or a space is not completely enclosed. If enough of the shape is indicated, people percieve the whole by lling in the missing infomation.
Proximity This images makes a shap out of people disapearing into the distance. Nothing is connected together but it still makes the shape.
Occurs when elements are placed close together. They tend to be perceived as a group. The nine squares below are placed without proximity. They are perceived as separate shapes.
Unity
I like the image that looks like fish coming out of water but is alos people. People will see something different at first but willl eventually see both things and not be able to unsee them. I find this very interesting to look at and learn about becuase it seems like your brain can’t recognise things at first but then it can see them very clearly.
Stable Stable images usually stand out a lot from the background, like that dot. Its on its own and can be clearly be noticed.
The image seems to confuse people because you can’t tell which side it is facing or where the images finishes. I dont like this picture as its hard to understand.
The form or gure clearly stands apart from the background. Most photographs conform to this principle where someone or something is featured within a setting/scene.
Reversable Occurs when positive and negative elements attract our attention equally and alternatively, coming forward and then receding. What do you see when looking at images? People see different things first. I think it is very clever how these images have been created. I will be making my own like this to see what others can see first.
I like the question mark as its also a hens head, I think the images is interesting on how its been created. I think most people will see the question mark first but then straight away see the hen because it isnt hidden in it too much.
Ambiguous Challenge viewers to and a focal point. Figure is enmeshed with ground carrying the viewers eye around the surface with dominant position onwhich to foocus.
My favourite image overall is the on to the right, I love how its a tree with a tiger and monkey. I struggles to see the tiger at first but when I did I was very amazed by the piece as a whole. I spotted the monkey first and didnt realise there was anything else.
The image in the bottom corner is difficult to see, I have seen it many times and still struggle to see the old lady. I see the young one very easily but my eyes struggle to adjust to see the older lady.
Victor Vasarely
Victor Vasarely was born in Pecs in 1906. In 1930 he worked as a Graphic artist as the creative consultant in the advertising agencies ‘Havas’ and ‘Dreager ontil 1935. He then went on to produce art using optical illusions. Over years he had developed geometric abstract art using optical illusions. He won some awards over his years and his work is displayed in may museums in different countries such as France.
The image to the right was created at a church in Polos (Pecs). It is a 3D sculpture which is an optical illusion. I like this piece because the colours are all so different but make the piece work together as a whole. It looks like a 3D piece stuck in the ground but it thin and flat.
This is an optical illusion picec created by Victor Vasarely. It is like a typical optical illusion you would see now. I think it is really amazing how it has been created. It looks very interesting and facinating.

(Art, 2016)
Images I like these pictures creating shapes from letters. Its very interesting to find what image is inside the letters. It is a really interesting way to create words especially to make each word unique. The image thats says ‘Lost’ is good because it makes you fill it in your self because the ‘O’ isnt there but people will know what was missing and automatically fill it in. Also the word says ‘Lost’ and the ‘O’ is missing so it actually seems lost as the word says.
My Favourite piece is the black and white image I think it stands out the most, The negative space was used very well. I think the bit of red on the fingernails brings the image together more as it shows its representing a girls hands and makes it look more like fingernails rather is being all white. The image I dont like is the elephant with the pair, I think the image was created really good but the improvements I would make is the colours, I dont think they work together, the yellow isnt bright enought.
Neville Brody This image links with my piece becasue its black and white like mine and the text is large and not very clear. I like this piece because the image is abstract and the text isnt clear. I think the image on the right looks better because it is more abstract than the other, The colours make it look more interesting than in just black and white, All the colours on them work well together.

http://www.printmag.com/wp-content/uploads/NevilleBrody_State-crop.jpg
I created these pieces on indesign. I used my initals from my full name and used a text that I thought would look thick enough and interesting. I then made it abstract by making my text large and putting it into boxes which then cuts off all the parts I didnt need. I like it because you can also see shapes in it. Like the ‘R’ has an arrow. The ‘a’ has a tree. The ‘H’ has an ‘I’ and so on. (image to the left).
This image was my origional created into an absract piece by copying it and flipping sections. I like it because it is very absract. The piece is a bit confusing because there are so many shapes inside it. (image to the right).
I like this piece because it looks so simply done. Ive layered one letter iver another to try and create different shapes or letters. I used different fonts so I could get better shapes. Some of them you can see other letters such as with the ‘T’ there is an ‘H’ or the ‘W’ has an ‘M’. There is something to see in each section.
These are my design process on how I created some of the letters. As you can see from the side I used letters layering each other in different colours (only black and white).
Thi is the same image but I inverted it so I could see which was looked better. I think the first one is the best becasue all the letters stand out to me a lot more but other people might see it differently.
This one has been inverted, It looks clearer on the design proccess if it was a white background but the final one looks better with a black background.
This is my orignal piece with the pattened one. It shows the deisng process of how I put them together in the end as my final pieces.
This design process shows how I made it into a full pattened design. I selected everything then copied it, the section I had copied I would flip and attatch it to the original one. I then copied it all and did it again ontil I got it to the size I wanted.
I made this patten really big so I could see how abstract I could get it. Its very abstract in the end as you can not tell what it is anymore, it looks like shapes and no letters.
These are my finished overall patterns. They are very abstract looking as you can not tell there are letters in the image onless you look into it really close. I think there good becasue there abstract but I dont like them beacuse there boring pieces. There very simple although they may not seem it to other people. I think the black one looks the best as it doesnt seem as confusing to look at.
The image to the right is a zoomed in picture of the work I created at the begining. It is the pattern design. On this you can see a bit of the outline on each letter, so you can see how it has been created.
The white image looks too busy. I dont like it at all. It is good for the brief and is very abstract and like an illumination but I dont feel it looks very good.
I added sections of colour to this absract piece. I dont like the colour but I do feel like it gave it more overall, it seems better with colour but maybe I should have chosen brighter colours instead of dull ones. (image to the right).
I added a tint of purple to the background on this to see how it was in colour but I didnt like it.
This image is my final piece for the brief. I have my first piece on here which was created with my name in a bold font and my other which is all my letters made small and into a abstract piece by copying and pasting it then flipping it all. I like them both especially on a piece together becasue you can see the difference in the work and how the pieces are nothing alike even though they are from the same principle.
Overall I think the pieces are really good and the only changes I would make are to make the abstract one look clearer so I needed to make it bolder instead of looking thin.
This is my final from the brief. I made the letters layering others on top of them. I like these the best out of all my pieces becasue they seem more interesting to look at and also make you think more about the work as you can see shapes in them and you have to work out which letter is hidden in it. I think it is better with the white background because you can see the letters more, but the odd letter seems better with the black background.

Brief.. A way to keep one’s creative juices owing and producing awesome work with this interesting design exercise. 1 – click en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The rst random wikipedia article you get is the name “ of your band. 2 – click clickwww.quotationspage.com/random.php3 The last four or ve words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your rst album. 3 – click www. ickr.com/explore/interesting/7days Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover. 4 – Now put it all together.
I had to use the links to find a quote, image and place. The link for the image didnt work so I google ‘Random photography’. I selected all the correct things and put them into illustrator so I could use them to create the CD cover.
I selected all the things I needed to create the CD covers. I decided to make 3 instead of just the one, I used all the same things but I played around with the image and text. I used the filters in the filer gallery to change the image so it was more interesting, I first used a grain one to make it a little blurry looking, I then used more blurry ones as my image seemed better like that but in the end I added a mosac effect to it so it has more texture in the background and it also make the image darker which made the text on the top stand out more. I make the title faded so it blends into the background a bit but not too much.

Penguin Book Design
Brief Using and applying the principles learned to date, please select one of the titles from the Penguin Book Awards competition to answer. READ THE BOOK - you have one week to achieve this Please note, the deadline date is not the stated one on the competition entry requirements. Your deadline date is FRIDAY 4th MARCH 2015. We will be entering this competition should the standard of work be of a professional manner. Good luck everyone and ENJOY!
These are all my inspiration images. I like the photography ones because they seem to blend with the background and look lost.
My favourite image is the one to the right, I like the missing part in the head/face. It seems very interesting. I love the colours and how it looks like its all splashed onto the image.
I like the image across the side because its really interesting how the face is dripping down the page like paint and parts are missing so the image is poking through.
I like the image in the corner as it seems flowers are coming from her eyes becasue its all girly. It a very powerful image and is creative. I would have loved to do something like this for my final piece but I didnt have the time to do it.
I love the image to the right, it has been done very cleaver. It is a full picture of a person but has been made black and white, the rest of her is under something black so it just looks like part of someone. It is very creative how it has been made.
The image below is very powerful and shows how girls are betrayed. I think it is very good to use as the book cover idea but I didnt know what words to use for it.
The image to the right is showing people how girls are being forced to look good and be fake with lots of makeup being forced on and also to be the perfect weight. It is really good and is clever. The image below is unusal as its showing a collage of things coming from a mans head. I had the idea to have things flying from a girls head for my cover design all things girly.
Caitlin Moran I havent read the whole book yet but what I have read I liked, it is very funny and understanding.
Caitlin Moran is an English journalist and author born 1975 in London. She writes three colomns a week for The Times. One for the Saturday magazine and a TV column. She has won 9 awards since 2010 for many things. When she was a teenager she thought she would become writer and never gave up on her dream. At the age of only 13 she won a contest for young readers for an essay about ‘Why I like books’ she won £250. In 1992 she started her television career hosting a show which was called, ‘The Naked City’. It ran for 2 series. Her upbringing inspired her TV show ‘Raised by wolves’.
How to be a woman? it isnt easy although men seem to think it is. There is taking the pill, shaving legs, dressing up ect.. It isnt nice either. You cant let your legs get hairy, you cant leave the house ithout makeup and guys seem to think its easy and quick to get ready. You wrong.
The book is all about the difficulties woman have faced over time and are still facing, How woman wasnt allowed to have a say or vote but are now allowed even if some people think otherwise. Its about how girls have to try their best to look good for men when they put no effort in. Do men secretly have women? My favourite book design is the one to the left, I think it stands out more than any of the others and isnt as boring. The one above isnt very good as it doesnt show to books concept as much.
This is my final design, I made it pink so it was girly but ive added a texture to the ballet shoes so they look more warn out and not too new. Ive put some shoes on the back of the book so it wasnt boring and it also shows girls dont always dress up nice and fancy, they can be casual and comfy. I used simple fonts because I didnt want it too stand out too much more than the image, I think the image will draw people in more at first.
The one to the right is the last design used. I dont like the green background but I like the idea of it having a splash of colour, but I like the other one to the left better in black and white with just abit of red on her top and in the text. It links together better being red in the text becasue her top is but the other one has red and green shich I dont think go togetehr as an over all design.

Brief
You are tasked with designing a series of 3 visually coherent A3 posters on a topic of your own choosing. All images and copy must be of your own creation. You may use any combination of illustration, photography and typography. You may not progress an idea for a topic without express permission from your tutor. You must have agreed your topic with the course tutors by the start of next weeks session should you not have a subject matter readily to mind. Your poster must use one or more of the principles already covered on the module in designing your outcomes This project will be the final one on this module and will take you up to the submission date.

Crohn’s Crohn’s Disease is a condition that causes inflammation of the digestive system or gut. Crohn’s can affect any part of the gut. although the most common area affected is the last part of the small intestine in some cases the colon.
The areas that are normally effected are very patchy with parts that are normal between them. A patch of inflammation might only be small around a few centimeters or be large spread across a section. It also affects the lining of th bowel but may go deeper in it. It is one of the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) the other is Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Crohns is a Chronic condition which means its a life-long illness. You might have some periods of good health which is called (remission) that is when your symptons stop. But you could also relapse or flare up which is when your having a really bad period and your sympotons become a lot more active.
Symptons: Crohn’s is a very individual condition so the sympotoms will vary from each person and depend on what part of the gut is active. The sypotoms can be mild or severe and can change over time. However, the most common are: • Abdominal pain and diarrhoea • Tiredness and fatigue • Feeling generally unwell or feverish • Mouth ulcers • Loss of appetite and weight loss • Anaemia (a reduced level of red blood cells)
(Crohn’s 2016)
Crohn’s Disease affects at least 115,000 people in the UK and millions worldwide. The condition is more common in woman than men and urban areas. Although it is increasing in devloping nations. Crohn’s is more likley to affect white people of Europe descent. The disease can start at any age but usually starts between 10-40. But a bigger case of teenages and children are being diagnosed.
Despite a lot of research, we still don’t know exactly what causes Crohn’s Disease. However, over the past few years major advances have been made, particularly in genetics. We now believe that Crohn’s is caused by a combination of factors; the genes you are born with, plus an abnormal reaction of your immune system to certain bacteria in your intestines, along with an unknown trigger that could include viruses, bacteria, diet, smoking, stress or something else in the environment. There isn’t a cure at the moment, but drug treatment and sometimes surgery can do a lot to give long periods of relief from symptoms.
Treatments may be medical, surgical or a combination of both. If your condition is mild, not having any treatment might even be an option. Some people may also find relief from their symptoms by altering their diet or going on a special liquid diet. But your treatment will ultimately depend on the type of Crohn’s you have and the choices you make in discussion with your doctor.
Many of the drugs used to help control IBD are anti-inflammatory drugs. These are steroids, 5ASAs, immunosuppressants such as azathioprine, methotrexate and ciclosporin, and biological drugs like infliximab and adalimumab. We also have some detailed information sheets about some of the drugs most commonly used in IBD: Adalimumab Azathioprine and Mercaptopurine Azathioprine – for Young People Infliximab Methotrexate Methotrexate – for Young People
Colitis Symptons can get worse over yearsbut some may fully settle so you dont realise you still have them.
Colitis can cause Diarrhea, Blood loss, crmaps, abdominal pains.

Ulcerative Colitis is a condition that causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the rectum and colon (the large bowel). In UC, tiny ulcers develop on the surface of the lining and these may bleed and produce pus. The inflammation usually begins in the rectum and lower colon, but it may affect the entire colon. If UC only affects the rectum, it is called proctitis, while if it affects the whole colon it may be called total colitis or pancolitis. It’s one of the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The other is Crohn’s Disease. Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic condition. This means that it is ongoing and life-long, although you may have periods of good health (remission), as well as times when symptoms are more active (relapses or flare-ups). (Crohn’s 2016)
These are some little diagrams to show the difference between both and which ones are effected and where.
These are the posters that inspired me, I sed the same idea of 3 people in my series of posters with different ages and genders and ive also added a bit of information on them all. I think they are really good and work well together as a set. They also havent got too much on them.
These are some posters ive found, there arent many posters on the illness because it is such an invisable and unknown diease. I liked these because they tell you a bit about the illness and are also not too realistic (image).
I am doing a charity walk on the 14th May in Manchester for Crohns and Colitis. So far I have raised ÂŁ116.00. My aim is to raise ÂŁ200 for the charity. I chose this charity because my mum suffers from the illness so its very close to my heart and the charity helped us when my mum was off work sick waiting for surgery.
I created a survey and posted it on a private forum on Facebook as i have acsess to the private group.
My boyfriend, me and my brother at the start of the 10K walk.
I managed to raise ÂŁ250 before the race but I still have donations coming. I finished the 10K walk for the charity and enjoyed it.
My boyfriend, me and my brother at the end of the 10K walk.
In the end a total of 352 people completed it. I only posted it into the forum on Facebook and I had a very large response will some very detailed results. (it was annonyms)
Questions I created.. 8. When did your symptoms first start?
I created my own questions then found a survey website that I could use so people could fill it in very easily.
9. Do you have any immediate family with the illness? 10. Do you have an IBD nurse? If so how helpful do you find it? 1. Are yiu make of female? 2. How old are you? 3. Do you have Crohns or Colitis? 4. Do you think enough is done to diagnose the illness? 5. How long did it take for you to be diagnosed? How long have you suffered with it? 6. What tests did you have done to be diagnosed? How difficult was it? 7. How often did you visit the GP before getting a referral? What advice were you given at diagnosis?
Here are some results from my survey I created. (out of 100 peoples results)
87% were females and 13% were Male. 40% were aged 40+ 29% aged 30-40 28% aged 20-30 3% aged 10-20
Screenshots from the survey questions.
66.67% of people have Crohns. 33.33% have Colitis. 22% of people think enough is done to diagnose the illness. 39% say not enough is done. 39% said other.. These are the results of other..
Peoples symptoms first started.. 10% as a child 30% as a teenager 54% adult 6% Unsure.
Fodmap Diets..
HOW DO FODMAPS AFFECT MY SENSITIVE BOWEL? Poorly absorbed sugars pass through the small intestine and enter the colon. this is where they are fermented by bacteria which can release gas, which stretches the sensitive bowel causing bloating, wind and pain. Fructose, lactose and polyols tend to retain water in the bowel and may result loose motions and diarrhoea.
(2016) FODMAPS
There are so many varieties of food on the fodmap diet.
Fodmap diets change most the foods you eat and cut things out you dont need/ shouldnt eat. They can be really helpful and stop your stomach feeling or being as bad.
These posters show the different types of foods you can eat on the diet and how much it effects your body by helping you.
These are my first poster designs, I liked the idea of them but they needed some changes, I needed to take the white ‘Ts’ and make it black because it seemed like it was supposed to stand for something, I also went with the title ‘It takes Guts’. I thought it was a good play on words as it is about your guts but I asked people with the illness and they found it offencive so I had to come up with something new. I hadent put any information on them by this point because I wasnt sure which to put on each poster. The text was too close to the edge of the page so that was something else I needed to think aboutchanging. (posters to the left).
I kept the same background for them all but changed the colours and I still used my people that were created as silhouettes. I made a teen boy and adult girl and a child, I put a glove on his hand so people could easily see he was a child, I added a cap onto the teenager so you could tell he was younger and The young adult woman has a dress.
These are all my finished poster designs. I changed the title from ‘It takes guts’ to ‘Nobody knows’ because the illness is an invisable one. I then changed the lines underneath on each poster but kept that one on them all. On each one I linked the title with the information and facts. This makes the posters work together as a series. I created the ribbon in the corner myself. (posters on the left)
Bibliography I like my overall designs much better than the ones I had created at first. I think the posters are effected and will help people understand the illness more, my posters can help any ages not just a particular age because people are always being diagnosed no matter how old. I also have the offical crohns and colitis webpage on the bottom incase people want to learn more about it.
