Brief
You are tasked with designing a series of 3 visually coherent A3 posters on a topic of your own choosing. All images and copy must be of your own creation. You may use any combination of illustration, photography and typography. You may not progress an idea for a topic without express permission from your tutor. You must have agreed your topic with the course tutors by the start of next weeks session should you not have a subject matter readily to mind. Your poster must use one or more of the principles already covered on the module in designing your outcomes This project will be the final one on this module and will take you up to the submission date.

Crohn’s Crohn’s Disease is a condition that causes inflammation of the digestive system or gut. Crohn’s can affect any part of the gut. although the most common area affected is the last part of the small intestine in some cases the colon.
The areas that are normally effected are very patchy with parts that are normal between them. A patch of inflammation might only be small around a few centimeters or be large spread across a section. It also affects the lining of th bowel but may go deeper in it. It is one of the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) the other is Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Crohns is a Chronic condition which means its a life-long illness. You might have some periods of good health which is called (remission) that is when your symptons stop. But you could also relapse or flare up which is when your having a really bad period and your sympotons become a lot more active.
Symptons: Crohn’s is a very individual condition so the sympotoms will vary from each person and depend on what part of the gut is active. The sypotoms can be mild or severe and can change over time. However, the most common are: • Abdominal pain and diarrhoea • Tiredness and fatigue • Feeling generally unwell or feverish • Mouth ulcers • Loss of appetite and weight loss • Anaemia (a reduced level of red blood cells)
(Crohn’s 2016)
Crohn’s Disease affects at least 115,000 people in the UK and millions worldwide. The condition is more common in woman than men and urban areas. Although it is increasing in devloping nations. Crohn’s is more likley to affect white people of Europe descent. The disease can start at any age but usually starts between 10-40. But a bigger case of teenages and children are being diagnosed.
Despite a lot of research, we still don’t know exactly what causes Crohn’s Disease. However, over the past few years major advances have been made, particularly in genetics. We now believe that Crohn’s is caused by a combination of factors; the genes you are born with, plus an abnormal reaction of your immune system to certain bacteria in your intestines, along with an unknown trigger that could include viruses, bacteria, diet, smoking, stress or something else in the environment. There isn’t a cure at the moment, but drug treatment and sometimes surgery can do a lot to give long periods of relief from symptoms.
Treatments may be medical, surgical or a combination of both. If your condition is mild, not having any treatment might even be an option. Some people may also find relief from their symptoms by altering their diet or going on a special liquid diet. But your treatment will ultimately depend on the type of Crohn’s you have and the choices you make in discussion with your doctor.
Many of the drugs used to help control IBD are anti-inflammatory drugs. These are steroids, 5ASAs, immunosuppressants such as azathioprine, methotrexate and ciclosporin, and biological drugs like infliximab and adalimumab. We also have some detailed information sheets about some of the drugs most commonly used in IBD: Adalimumab Azathioprine and Mercaptopurine Azathioprine – for Young People Infliximab Methotrexate Methotrexate – for Young People
Colitis Symptons can get worse over yearsbut some may fully settle so you dont realise you still have them.
Colitis can cause Diarrhea, Blood loss, crmaps, abdominal pains.
Ulcerative Colitis is a condition that causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the rectum and colon (the large bowel). In UC, tiny ulcers develop on the surface of the lining and these may bleed and produce pus. The inflammation usually begins in the rectum and lower colon, but it may affect the entire colon. If UC only affects the rectum, it is called proctitis, while if it affects the whole colon it may be called total colitis or pancolitis. It’s one of the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The other is Crohn’s Disease. Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic condition. This means that it is ongoing and life-long, although you may have periods of good health (remission), as well as times when symptoms are more active (relapses or flare-ups). (Crohn’s 2016)
These are some little diagrams to show the difference between both and which ones are effected and where.
These are the posters that inspired me, I sed the same idea of 3 people in my series of posters with different ages and genders and ive also added a bit of information on them all. I think they are really good and work well together as a set. They also havent got too much on them.
These are some posters ive found, there arent many posters on the illness because it is such an invisable and unknown diease. I liked these because they tell you a bit about the illness and are also not too realistic (image).
I am doing a charity walk on the 14th May in Manchester for Crohns and Colitis. So far I have raised ÂŁ116.00. My aim is to raise ÂŁ200 for the charity. I chose this charity because my mum suffers from the illness so its very close to my heart and the charity helped us when my mum was off work sick waiting for surgery.
My boyfriend, me and my brother at the start of the 10K walk.
I managed to raise ÂŁ250 before the race but I still have donations coming. I finished the 10K walk for the charity and enjoyed it.
My boyfriend, me and my brother at the end of the 10K walk.
I created a survey and posted it on a private forum on Facebook as i have acsess to the private group.
In the end a total of 352 people completed it. I only posted it into the forum on Facebook and I had a very large response will some very detailed results. (it was annonyms)
I created my own questions then found a survey website that I could use so people could fill it in very easily.
Questions I created.. 8. When did your symptoms first start? 9. Do you have any immediate family with the illness? 10. Do you have an IBD nurse? If so how helpful do you find it? 1. Are yiu make of female? 2. How old are you? 3. Do you have Crohns or Colitis? 4. Do you think enough is done to diagnose the illness? 5. How long did it take for you to be diagnosed? How long have you suffered with it? 6. What tests did you have done to be diagnosed? How difficult was it? 7. How often did you visit the GP before getting a referral? What advice were you given at diagnosis?
Screenshots from the survey questions.
Here are some results from my survey I created. (out of 100 peoples results)
87% were females and 13% were Male. 40% were aged 40+ 29% aged 30-40 28% aged 20-30 3% aged 10-20
66.67% of people have Crohns. 33.33% have Colitis. 22% of people think enough is done to diagnose the illness. 39% say not enough is done. 39% said other.. These are the results of other..
Peoples symptoms first started.. 10% as a child 30% as a teenager 54% adult 6% Unsure.
Fodmap Diets..
HOW DO FODMAPS AFFECT MY SENSITIVE BOWEL? Poorly absorbed sugars pass through the small intestine and enter the colon. this is where they are fermented by bacteria which can release gas, which stretches the sensitive bowel causing bloating, wind and pain. Fructose, lactose and polyols tend to retain water in the bowel and may result loose motions and diarrhoea.
(2016) FODMAPS
There are so many varieties of food on the fodmap diet.
Fodmap diets change most the foods you eat and cut things out you dont need/ shouldnt eat. They can be really helpful and stop your stomach feeling or being as bad.
These posters show the different types of foods you can eat on the diet and how much it effects your body by helping you.
These are my first poster designs, I liked the idea of them but they needed some changes, I needed to take the white ‘Ts’ and make it black because it seemed like it was supposed to stand for something, I also went with the title ‘It takes Guts’. I thought it was a good play on words as it is about your guts but I asked people with the illness and they found it offencive so I had to come up with something new. I hadent put any information on them by this point because I wasnt sure which to put on each poster. The text was too close to the edge of the page so that was something else I needed to think aboutchanging. (posters to the left).
I kept the same background for them all but changed the colours and I still used my people that were created as silhouettes. I made a teen boy and adult girl and a child, I put a glove on his hand so people could easily see he was a child, I added a cap onto the teenager so you could tell he was younger and The young adult woman has a dress.
These are all my finished poster designs. I changed the title from ‘It takes guts’ to ‘Nobody knows’ because the illness is an invisable one. I then changed the lines underneath on each poster but kept that one on them all. On each one I linked the title with the information and facts. This makes the posters work together as a series. I created the ribbon in the corner myself. (posters on the left)
I like my overall designs much better than the ones I had created at first. I think the posters are effected and will help people understand the illness more, my posters can help any ages not just a particular age because people are always being diagnosed no matter how old. I also have the offical crohns and colitis webpage on the bottom incase people want to learn more about it.
