Summary Report rebekahburdaky.com Rebekah Burdaky 1504336

Reflective summary. This is a summary report for everything I had learnt during my project for Employability and enterprise. I will be focusing on talking about how well my time management was throughout the project. How my software skills were and how my planning went. Showing my research and about how easy I found it looking for the information I needed and what I did if I couldn’t find it. I will also be saying how well I found it learning how to use a craft knife and create my mockups. In the end I will create my conclusion which will have a plan on how I will keep up with all my work in my next year of University and long term. I will also set myself some goals which I would like to stick to.

For the brief I had to create a redesign of any packaging for any company I wanted. I chose to do it on the naked smoothies and create a cup holder for them. I had 12 weeks to finish it in and that included any research. I had to pull apart the brief and put it into sections for me to focus and then create a plan of what to do each week.

I first started by creating a Pintrest page with different packaging ideas in for inspiration. I am glad I did that as that is how I came up with creating a cup holder. Pintrest is a very good website to get any inspiration from as it has lots of different styles of work on it. Looking on Pintrest was very interesting as I could look at designers work not just their box designs but other products too which could also give me further inspiration for the future.

I created a skills Audit in week 2. I had never heard of one before so I had to research it to find out more and I thought it was a very useful thing to create and have. The skills audit I had to create was on a scale of 1-5 then I had to say what I rated myself on each section. I would say I work the best on Photoshop and my Illustrator skills have got a lot better over the year. I have much more experience using Photoshop so as time goes on I will get better in InDesign and Illustrator as I started from scratch on them last year. I work alright in a group; I wouldn’t say I work really well because I can find it hard to get my points across to people sometimes. I think I am worse at presentations as I find it really hard talking in front of people, I think I need more confidence in doing so which means more practise. Doing my presentation did help with my confidence as people gave me some nice feedback and also feedback that helps me improve my work. I don’t like doing presentations but they are very beneficial for me as I can make some changes to my work to help improve it.

In my next session I created a Gantt chart. I made mine in the same style as my skills audit so I kept the theme throughout them both. I like making Gantt charts as they help me stick to a plan of what I need to do and when so I will be making one of them for each project I have set as they are a big help for me. I managed to stick to it but I did get a bit behind creating my mock up as the printers wasn’t working so that ended up setting me back but with me having my Gantt chart I moved on to the next thing I needed to do whilst waiting for the printers.

I looked at different packaging as some were very creative. My favourite one was the pizza slice box, I think it was the most creative because it has the design of a pizza on the front of the box but you can also pull out individual slices and have a piece each. It also has a handle to hold the crust so you don’t end up with greasy fingers when holding it. Finding the research, I needed wasn’t too hard to do, I looked at artists and companies to find out everything I needed. I found it useful looking at others work as it gave me a lot of inspiration and helped me find a structure for my work.

I also looked at bio-packaging as it was the type of cardboard I wanted to use for my final design I like this packaging because it is environmental friendly which I feel everything should start going down that route t help save the environment rather than using things that damage the environment.

I found some artists that created unusual packaging which got me wondering what I could do to make my work unusual and unique. I enjoyed researching different artists and seeing their styles of work as it was interesting to see how different people work and their creations are all unique.

My timekeeping wasn’t the best at first, I needed to make my plan so I could keep on top of everything better as I was too unorganized at first. I made the Gantt Chart which helped with my timekeeping but in the future I need to stick to my plan better so I don’t get behind at all.

I think my software skills got a lot better as the time went on, I used Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. My favorite on to use is Illustrator but I think it is the hardest one to get used to. I think I am better in Photoshop because I have been using it for around 5 years but I have only used Illustrator for 2 so I am trying to build up my confidence with it and practice using it more. InDesign is easier to use than Illustrator because there is not as much to do on it.

To conclude I enjoyed doing this project as I had to research so many different things which helped me learn a lot of things such as how to manage my time management and do my planning. I also learnt how to do new things on illustrator which came in very handy when creating my fruit and veg. Finding new artists was helpful not just for now but also for the future as I can use the artist for inspiration on my other work and the companies as well. I am going to create a plan for myself in each project such as a Gantt chart so I can keep on top of all my work as I find it very useful to have a plan.

I need to make sure my timekeeping is much better so I don’t have too much to do at the same time I would like to spread all the work out throughout each project so I don’t struggle. My main goal for the future is to make sure my timekeeping is better and practice using illustrator and new software’s so I can be much better at them like I am with Photoshop. Through university I would like to hand all my work in on time and not miss any deadlines, I would also like to do more work than I have done in the past for each project and put much more effort in as I want a career in graphic design.
