hat sector of the competition will independent resellers have to look to take market share and what capabilities will be necessary for them to maximize their chances of success?
5IF .BSLFU 4FDUPST ď Ž The OEMs ď Ž The Big-Box Resellers ď Ž The Internet Retailers We took a look at the financial strength of Staples and Office Depot from a balance sheet perspective in our recent article "Amazon & Office Products - Who's Equipped to Fight Back" and noted that, once the privatization of Staples is completed by Sycamore Partners, then it's likely that Office Depot will have the stronger of the two balance sheets. We know Amazon is already having a significant impact on the performance of both these companies, and we know this competitive pressure is not likely to let up.
8
www.rechargeasia.com
As EBITDA shrinks then borrowing capacity is reduced, limiting options to invest in business development strategies. In this article, we're taking a look at the income statement and the combined impact of loss of market share, price compression, and market shrink on Staples, Office Depot, and Hewlett Packard. Based on overall market shares, we believe around 80% of Staples and Depot's ink and toner sales are OEM brand cartridges and estimate their combined sales of OEM cartridges to be $7.3 billion. A concerted effort by a group of office equipment and products resellers to convert a portion of this $7.3 billion to aftermarket alternatives would have a big impact, not just on the financial performance of Staples and Depot, but also on their [Staples and Depot's] OEM suppliers of ink and toner cartridges. With this scenario in mind, we built a financial model to measure the impact of independent reseller channel consolidation when combined with sales and marketing efforts targeted at the Staples and Depot customer base and designed to help the independent resellers win market share.
160th Issue - September/October 2017
FEATURE ARTICLES
Model Assumptions: • Staples sales of OEM ink and toner - $4.5 billion (of which 50% is HP brand) • Depot sales of OEM ink and toner - $2.75 billion (of which 50% is HP brand) • Hewlett Packard total sales ink and toner - $10 billion
Staples Conclusions: 5% market shrink, 10% customer churn, and 10% price compression (passed through from OEMs attempting to defend market share) eliminates almost 75% of EBIT in a $700M swing!
Office Depot Conclusions: 5% market shrink, 10% customer churn, and 10% price compression (passed through from OEMs attempting to defend market share) turns a profitable business unprofitable in a $530M EBIT swing!

Second, we know churn is taking place. Staples and Depot are losing business to Amazon as their retail sales crash and even their B2B comes under attack. Perhaps not 10% churn yet but probably 5% and climbing! Third, while we've modeled 10% price compression on OEM cartridges, this is actually the least likely of the key events to take place. It's in the model to demonstrate the OEM's cannot reduce prices on their cartridges because of its devastating impact on their profitability! Because of the profound negative implications, OEM cartridge price reductions will only ever be a last resort action to defend market share.
EXPERIMENT WITH THE CALCULATORS TO SEE THE IMPACT ON THE P&L THAT RESULTS FROM CHANGING THE PRICE COMPRESSION ASSUMPTIONS! However, it is this limitation for using price to defend market share that translates to create great opportunity for resellers who perfect conversion selling [OEM to aftermarket] in new business situations, as well as selectively within their existing customer base to reduce churn (customer loss) and improve profitability.
4
Fourth, a massive consolidation of the independent reseller base is going to continue to take place. However; • There is no guarantee a group of "super-elite" Office Equipment resellers will emerge to sweep up struggling Office Products resellers, and then subsequently, up their ante to win business away from the big-box resellers. • There's also no guarantee a large group of the stronger OP resellers, (not yet ready to sell-up) will successfully acquire the best of their struggling OP competitors before they go out of business. Regardless, it's not difficult to foresee an overall reduction of 65% or more in the number of independent office products & equipment resellers, with a best case outcome resulting in a 7% reduction in retail dollars sold through the channel!
Hewlett Packard Conclusions: 5% market shrink, 10% customer churn, and 10% price reduction passed through to resellers in an attempt to defend market share, eliminates almost 70% of EBIT in a $2.5B swing!
SUMMARY 8IBU EPFT UIJT NPEFM UFMM VT
1
First, we already know market shrink is taking place. We all intuitively know we print less and, to back up what we intuitively know, we only have to look at the recent financial performance of Staples, Depot, and even Hewlett Packard and other OEMs to confirm the market is getting smaller.
10
www.rechargeasia.com
The impact of the shrink, churn, and price compression issues faced by Staples and Depot are flowing upstream and have the potential to become major issues for the OEMs and their profitability. In light of this, it shouldn't be surprising that they [the OEMs] are likely to accelerate their direct selling strategies to mitigate potential loss of market share incurred by their big box resellers.
)PX DBO UIF JOEFQFOEFOU SFTFMMFST FYQMPJU UIF PQQPSUVOJUZ What's it going to take for the independents to take $1.7B in sales away from Depot and Staples, and to convert that into $850M in new sales for their businesses? Staples and Depot may represent the soft underbelly of the Office Products Industry - two giant big-box resellers facing limited options!
SUMMARY
160th Issue - September/October 2017
FEATURE ARTICLES In short, it's going to take a significant upgrade in capabilities, in fact it's going to take a whole series of digital business transformations. Every service that Staples and Depot routinely provide to their business customers, and more, will be necessary before there's a realistic chance of a widescale shift in market shares. These include: Conversion selling • OEM to Aftermarket alternatives (up to 50% saving) Marketing and brand awareness • Blogging (educational resource) • Social Media (engaged audience) • Email marketing (developing and nurturing contacts) • Web traffic (conversion of visits to leads) Information technology • CRM • Business Intelligence • B2B & B2C e-commerce capability Feet-on-the-Street • Internet savvy sales reps • Digital comp plans
CONCLUSION The business opportunity we've described is a big prize but, even with significant upgrades to their business approach, it's not going to be an easy prize for the independents to win. This is so despite;
1. There being limited options for Staples and Depot to defend their business.
2. Their limitations being a significant and exploitable opportunity.
3. Amazon simultaneously attacking and weakening both Staples and Depot.
Amazon, in weakening Staples and Depot can, in fact, indirectly help the independent resellers achieve their objectives!
Just like we've previously explained how the independent resellers are being squeezed from all directions, now's the time to fight back, turn the tables, and put pressure on the increasingly soft underbelly that Staples and Depot have developed!
As an office products reseller, are you still operating in the analog world or are you transitioning to digital with the use of sophisticated digital marketing tactics? You can't survive unless you do, so please check out our SlideShare "executive" summary to help you determine where you are in the process!

midst the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) endpoints, the cybersecurity threat landscape has expanded to every mobile, smart and cloudenabled device on the network. This threatens the resilience of organisations not only from the disruption of business operations, but also the potential ramifications of a data breach can lead to financial loss, brand and reputational damage and loss credibility in the market place.
Printers and multifunction printers (MFPs) are not immune to the security threat and are vulnerable to the same risks as any device on the network. As IoT devices they are susceptible to the growing threat of DDoS attacks – left unsecured they are an open door to the corporate network. Quocirca’s latest report “Print security: An imperative in the IoT era” discusses the many points of vulnerabilities around print. With advanced connectivity and capacity to collect, process and store large volumes of data, the multifunction printer (MFP) has long been a ‘weak link’ in the IT infrastructure – one that businesses can no longer afford to be complacent about. In Quocirca’s survey, 61% of large enterprises admitted suffering at least one data breach through insecure printing.
12
www.rechargeasia.com
Consequently, businesses must take a proactive and multifaceted approach to print security. This requires a full security evaluation of the print environment which can recommend the appropriate technology – including hardware and software security – as well as end-user education on responsible and secure printing practices.
Quocirca recommends that the following measures are taken: Ensure print devices are part of an overall information security strategy. Printers are no longer dumb peripherals and must be integrated into an organisation’s security policies and procedures. Adopt a security policy for the entire printer fleet. In the event of a data breach, an organisation must be able to demonstrate that it has taken measures to protect all networked devices. An organisation should be able to monitor, manage and report on the entire fleet, regardless of model, age or brand. Secure access to the network. Like other networked devices, MFPs require controls that limit network access, manage the use of network protocols and ports, and prevent potential viruses and malware.

FEATURE ARTICLES Secure the document. In addition to access and device controls, digital rights management capabilities can further discourage unauthorised copying or transmission of sensitive or confidential information. This can be achieved by enabling features such as secure watermarking, digital signatures or PDF encryption.

Ongoing monitoring and management. To ensure compliance and to trace unauthorised access, organisations need a centralised and flexible way to monitor usage across all print devices. Auditing tools should therefore be able to track usage at the document and user level. This can be achieved by either using MFP audit log data or third-party tools, which provide a full audit trail that logs the identity of each user, the time of use and details of the specific functions that were performed. Secure the device. Hard disk encryption adds an additional layer of security; securing stored data be it actively in use by the device, sitting idle on a device, and/or used by the device in a previous job. To avoid the risk of data being recovered when the MFP is moved or disposed of, data overwrite kits should be employed to remove all scan, print, copy and fax data stored in the hard disk drive.

Seek expert guidance. Manufacturers and Managed Print Service (MPS) providers continue to develop and enhance their security products and services. Take advantage of security assessment services which evaluate potential vulnerabilities in the print infrastructure. Note that not all assessments are equal. Ensure that the assessment provider demonstrates the credentials to fully evaluate the security risks across device, data and users. There are also a range of security certifications that are published by the National Institute for Standards and Technology. Ultimately, print security demands a comprehensive approach that includes education, policy and technology. In today’s compliance driven environment where the cost of a single data breach

can run into millions, organisations must proactively embrace this challenge. By using the appropriate level of security for their business needs, an organisation can ensure that its most valuable asset – corporate and customer data – is protected.

MARKET TRENDS
Machine Learning Will Cause
a Great Leap Forward for 3D Printing 3D printing ahs gone a long way over the last 20 years and it still faces some major challenges that have to do with accuracy, speed, and the diversity of printing materials. And there is one more challenge: making 3D printing suitable for larger-scale objects, even whole architectural structures. To push these boundaries further will require heavy leaning on machine learning because it’s industrial robots that will be printing these structures. In other words, it’s not about hardware, it’s a bout software. That’s at least according to the head of MX3D, Gijs van der Velden, who spoke to Co.Design about the future of industrial 3D printing. MX3D is a spinoff of Joris Laarman Labs which focuses on the commercialization of large-scale steel 3D printing. Steel 3D printing comes with its own challenges: reheating steel makes it brittle and nobody needs brittle steel structures. Yet 3D printing methods that involve layering a melted material also involve a lot of reheating: the creation of each new layer of material reheats the one below.
First Bridge Test
14
www.rechargeasia.com
Bridge Design Making 3D printing robots smarter will go towards solving this problem. The robot will print the structure in such a way as not to allow any part to cool off too much before the next layer is added, or, as Co.Design author Cliff Kuang puts it, “A robot that’s 3-D printing with steel looks less like a spider spinning a web— and more like a spider spinning a web while tripping on acid.”
PHOTO: JORIS LAARMAN LAB
The market for 3D printed steel applications represents just 5% of the total steel market, Van der Velnde says. Yet, this 5% portion is actually a very lucrative one, including offshore oil rigs and other complex, intricate structures that are faster done by robots than by humans. https://www.fastcodesign. com/90143244/how-machinelearning-will-unlock-the-future-of3d-printing

RepRap Launches New, Bigger 3D Printer
Germany’s RepRap, one of the foremost 3D printer makers in Europe, has released a new product that targets makers of larger objects. The X400 v4, which is the fourth generation of the company’s X400 series, features great accuracy and speed, with layer thicknesses of up to 0.1 mm. The printer, RepRap said, is quiet, can level the print bed automatically, and is great for low-volume industrial part manufacturing. The printer also has a filament tracking function, so if the printing material ends before the print job is completed, the printer pauses until new filament is added. Multiple-color and multiple-filament printing is also possible thanks to the dual extruder system but what’s even better is that the software the printer runs on allows the user to set carious perimeters for the different geometries within a single complex item, the company said. https://3dprint.com/187197/german-reprap-x400-v4-3d-printer/

Voxeljet Set to Unveil New 3D Printing System
Voxeljet is preparing for the launch of a new 3D printer that utilizes its high-speed sintering method. The German company said in a statement ahead of the release at the Formnext fair in Germany, that the HSS-based system will be able to produce objects with properties similar to these resulting from the use of selective laser sintering and multi jet fusion, and, importantly, injection molding.
The HSS method is based on Voxeljet’s proprietary core technology, binder jetting. Basically, HSS selectively squirts infrared absorbing ink on layers of plastic powder. The layers is then exposed to infrared light to produce ready to use products for various applications, including brackets, housings and other functional parts for the carmaking, industrial equipment, and even consumer product industries. http://www.tradearabia.com/news/CONS_329930.html

Ukrainian Startup Files Patent for New 3D Printing Method
A Ukrainian startup has developed a new 3D printing method it calls continuous production with wavefront converting (CPWC) and has filed a patent application for it. Sprybuild claims this method could be used to build the fastest DLP 3D printer in the world. CPWC redistributes radiation energy in each layer of the print job, making the 3D printer capable of achieving speeds of up to 100 mm per minute. Put simply, this redistribution enables the formation of a projection of the printed item directly in the build area. What’s more, the method makes it possible to 3D print any photopolymerizable liquid, and even mixtures of printing materials. A third advantage is that the CPWC method ensures a larger build volume. Among the items the new method is best suited to produce are electronic device cases, molds, gear wheels, and, of course, decorative objects. http://www.3ders.org/articles/20170918-sprybuild-developing-worldsfastest-dlp-3d-printers-with-cpwc-tech.html

HP Offers New Print Security Lineup for Partners HP has offered its partners an extensive new lineup of new solutions aimed to better equip them for the new challenges inherent in the new digital printing environment, the company said last week. The lineup includes a new security feature for HP printers, a solution for secure cloud printing, a workflow optimization platform, a Smart Device Services 2.0 platform, and a new line of A3 printers with enhanced security features. Commenting on the releases, HP’s Imaging and Printing president, Enrique Lores, said that these solutions will effectively reinvent printing, making it less uncertain, insecure, and unpredictable, contrary to wide expectations. The company’s new solutions take cybersecurity seriously, equipping HP printers with capabilities that will, for example, shut them down when there’s an anomaly in the usual traffic, reducing the chances of an attack actually taking place. The HP Connection Inspector, the HP Roam, the HP Solutions Hub, and the other two new additions were presented at the HP Reinvent: World Partner Forum, with the promise to help them reshape the way business is done and the way printing services are being provided. The Connection Inspector, an intelligent embedded security feature, equips printers with self-healing capabilities that help them fight off malware attacks
HP Imaging and Printing President Enrique Lores by inspecting outbound network connections, determine which of these are normal, and stop any suspicious activity it detects. The HP Roam enables you to print at any moment, from any location and mobile device, and also to access their prints from a set of print location at the office, at home, or from a set of public places. It offers a universal, seamless print experience, complete with autodiscovery of the nearest Roam-enabled printer, and a strict authentication process to make the printing process secure as well as user-friendly.
The HP Solutions Hub targets specifically businesses that are paper-intensive, such as healthcare and legal and financial services providers. The solution enables to customize workflows in order to optimize them by turning multifunctionals into custom work environments by utilizing a mobile and cloud-centric architecture. The HP Smart Device Services 2.0 consists of a set of cloud tools and device-based sensing functions, whose features range from part failure prediction capabilities to enhanced diagnostics and fleet optimization, to enhanced collection and billing, and device health alert. Finally, the new line of A3 printers aims to provide affordable color prints utilizing the HP PageWide printing technology along with maximum uptime through the Smart Device Services 2.0. https://globenewswire.com/newsrelease/2017/09/11/1117589/0/en/HP-InspiresPartners-to-Reinvent-How-the-World-Prints.html

2017 Cost of Data Breach Study, ASEAN
Benchmrk research sponsored by IBM Security, Independently conducted by Ponemon Institute LLC
Trends in the cost of data breach
Figure 2. The average total organizational cost of data breach
Detection and escalation costs represent the largest per capita component of the cost of data breach. Figure 1 reports the average per capita cost of a data breach for 20 ASEAN companies.2 According to the benchmark findings, data breaches cost companies an average of 156 SGD per compromised record. The highest component pertains to detection and escalation at 63 SGD, followed by lost business costs at 47 SGD. Detection and escalation costs typically include forensic and investigative activities, assessment and audit services, crisis team management and communications to executive management and board of directors. The post data breach response (ex post response) costs accounted for 41 SGD per compromised record, whereas notification costs only accounted for 5 SGD per compromised record. Figure 1. Trends in practices to reduce the risk and consequences of a data breach Investment in improving data protection practices is important to minimize the occurrence and financial consequences of a data breach. In this study, incident response teams and plans, extensive use of encryption, threat intelligence sharing, employee training programs and boardlevel involvement decreased the per capita cost. In addition to measuring specific cost activities related to the loss or theft of personal information, Table 1 reports the preventive measures implemented by companies after the data breach. The most popular measures or steps taken were: training and awareness programs (55 percent), additional manual procedures and controls (50 percent), identity and access management solutions (50 percent), the expanded use of encryption (49 percent) and security certification or audit (47 percent). Protection in the Wake of the Equifax Breach The data breach of Equifax, the credit data reporting agency, could affect as many as 143 million people in the US alone. The implications could be huge, so it pays to be prepared. Cybersecurity experts advise that everyone who could be potentially affected should take steps to avoid or minimize the damage as soon as possible. First, you need to identify the damage and assess it, experts that spoke to Who. What.Why. said. In case there is damage, it could be a good idea to pick another third-party credit monitoring provider. Equifax itself offers protection services but by agreeing to use them, you would forfeit your right to sue the company. Meanwhile, freeze the compromised accounts. could be a good idea, especially if the app involves multi-factor authentication. Signing up for ID theft and credit protection is another good idea: anyone could become the target of an identity theft as long as they have a Social Security number. Besides this, follow the basic rule for cybersecurity: never
